My belief...
is that once this team gets experience on offense and can keep the player turnover from year to year to a minimal we will have a great team!
Why?
30+ point offense:
As noted by FSUncensored, we hit this mark against Colorado. I fully believe that our offense under Fisher will be capable of handing in 30+ point games against just about anyone they face......before turnovers. (Give him till middle of next year)
-14 point defense
I also believe that Mickey Andrews has never taken a step back in quality Defensive production. (The years scoring D went down, we had TONS of points off turnovers) He too will keep opponents to 14 points or less. Again this is -14 points before turnovers.
note: scoring D is kind of a dumb stat anyway - there should be a stat in football for points off turnovers (like within 3 plays after a turnover the opponent scores) and points directly scored by opponents D should NEVER be counted against scoring Defense. I've never understood this about Defensive stats in football. Your offense turns in two pick 6's and three fumbles whithin field goal range, and suddenly your Defense just gave up 23 points!!! What!?
Conclusion: Within the next year, even with a turnover or two per game we should be in contention in every game we play.
See if that pans out!

I am really glad that people are using the Favports option!
I’ll say that I agree with most of your post.
The production of the defense, however, under Mickey has really declined. We have ranked outside the top 45 in opponent adjusted pass efficiency defense for the last 4 years. His scheme is stale. I love the guy, but I doubt Jimbo wants to keep him.
There are stats for that True, True offensive points allowed removes special teams td’s and turnover td’s.
The most important stat in college football (it’s been proofed twice) is 3rd down pass efficiency defense (opponent adjusted).
I would be BLOWN AWAY if Mickey, Jody Allen, or Amato are on our staff in 2010. Shocked.
I know people are saying that Chuck still recruits South Florida like crazy, but I will be very interested to see how he does this year. Last year, he didn’t hit SoFla that well.
At this point, if I were running things, I would Keep: The offensive staff, Odell Heggins, and probably Coach Stroud. That’s it.

I also attribute decrease in pass efficiency to...better passing in college football top to bottom.

The ACC has been the worst of the 6 conferences in terms of passing in the past 4 years.
Mickey has majorly slipped in recruiting and developing DB’s.

Offense partly to blame for the slip
I think that is to be expected what with the steady decline of our offense. When the defense can only get off the field for 4 plays and are put right back out there it’s tough to keep opponents down. When the other team gets consistent field advantage this puts undue pressure on the D as well.
That being said, I do think that Mickey is too predictable and teams have learned how to take advantage. This was readily apparent in our LB covering WR in Man and getting burned last week.

Rollin,
My gut says you are right. I have an idea for a great reader-project, if you are interested: Let’s compare Florida’s State’s % of offensive Plays against the total % of offensive plays, in an attempt to gauge the total amount of time the defense has really been on the field.

HOMEWORK?!
Sounds like a plan. I’ll go back over our last couple of seasons and see what I come up with. Should be interesting.

Sweet.
Remember to consider the clock rules from previous seasons. Hopefully though, using offensive plays as a percentage of total plays will filter out some of that.

I'm going to dissagree
You might be right, but I want to go on record saying that I think the D is fine. I’m predicting that Mickey keeps his job as long as he is healthy enough to chew up sunflower seeds and defensive backs….
We’ll see

Mickey called a great game,
we have to give him credit for that.
This is a defense loaded with talent, however, and we can’t overlook that.
Mickey needs to call games like this more often.
His DB recruiting has been horrible of late. This game didn’t change that.
I will be shocked if Jimbo keeps Mickey once Bobby goes.
