A better block by #86 and that's a much bigger play

still was a good call on first down however

Nice finish to that drive.

…Reed and Easterling are very impressive. More touches will result in more touchdowns. Nice TD for Reed

how much time left in the fourth?

How are they this close? Busted big plays? We have twice the possession time as them? All our stats appear to be good to very good.

Great playcall and execution!

Would anyone say:

That we’re struggling with this team?

I mean have we looked bad?

by DOCB on Oct 16, 2008 10:54 PM EDT reply actions

First half

We looked pretty mediocre. Second half has been notably better. At best a 20-25 team. Ponder did well. Kicking did well. Receiving corps so-so. Defese notably better in the second half.

by Osceola on Oct 16, 2008 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

This was more difficult than it should have been. The ability to put a team away still isn’t there, especially against NC State. BUT .. very positive that the Noles held firm on a Thursday.

another mark in the W column, but I think our team is far from being back on top of the ACC or in the national spotlight. too many mistake, which I understand since our team is still very young.

I hate how the ESPN announcers, especially Fowler, give us no props since we haven’t beaten a team with a winning record, when most of the top 25 has only beat 1-2 teams with winning records. They act like all of the top 25 team has played powerhouse teams every week. Another reason why polls shouldn’t exist until week 8 at the earliest.

Thirdcoast,

another reasonable take.

I do think we’re ranked this week. A 5-1 team is hard to ignore.

Post-game thoughts

1) Defense was flat — much better second half, although still too many big runs. And, the defense benefitted from the offense’s ball control.
2) Why is Surrency getting all the jump ball love? I seem to remember Greg Carr catching a couple of those in his career
3) I have a theory on our O-line — IF … IF we can win at the point of attack, our agility means we can get to the second level faster than most O-lines and we have a chance to spring more big plays. The problem is, we also are going to have more negative/zero plays because we lose too much at the point of attack. Does that make sense?
4) I’m starting to really like Ponder’s moxy. That big throw over the middle to Easterling for a first down was, importance-wise, similar to the third-down play to Easterling vs. Miami. Ponder also has a knack of finding the first down marker on runs.
5) I haven’t had this much confidence in an FSU kicker since Bill Capece.
6) TE J. LIttle seemed to get a lot of snaps tonight. Not sure wny
7) Ball needs more carries
8) Mangum sure looked slow on their long TD — their guy pulled away 10 yards!
9) Overall, this game tells me our defense isn’t as good as we thought, our running game is every bit as good as we thought, our passing game is about what we thought, our kick coverage is as bad as we thought and Gano is a friggin stud.

Ed,

1. agree. We need to get ready for this zone read stuff again from VTech.

2. I think surrency showed his ability to get to the highest point. If he catches it in practice, chances are he will eventually get it in the games.

3. You’re right on this. I’m not sure I like it, though. i’d rather consistently get 2-3 on first n 2nd down than 0, 0, 8, 0, 12.

4. Ponder made 3 bad reads tonight that I saw. I bet there were 1 or 2 more. This team appears to play Smarter, and maybe that is because of Ponder. He just seems to have a good idea of what’s going on, awareness etc. I’m not sure who to compare ponder to at this point. Maybe a Randal Cunningham?

5. I’m not sure I’m old enough to remember him (born 1985), but Gano IS the ACC’s best kicker.

6. Maybe Caz was hiding an injury. If so, it could explain some of our losses on first down.

7. Who is ball?

8. We need PRob to stay, badly, for his Senior year.

9.. I think we might disagree a bit here. Our defense is very good against traditional, pocket teams, but struggles against mobile qb’s. Our running game did great tonight despite getting nothing up the middle. I’d say our passing game improved tonight, and at some point, we will put it all together. I’m not sure if that point is tonight. We need to shorten up our punts, badly. Gano is insanely good.

A few from me: Our DE’s need to stop crashing down do quickly.

McMahon should face serious competition next year.

Was Furlong injured? if not, and Spurlock came in for ineffectiveness, let’s hope Furlong is done forever.

I haven’t has as much confidence in an FSU qb since… Weinke? Maybe?

is what would keep me up at night, if I wasn’t already up cursing the Rays. The CBs worry me, and losing Carter and Robinson next year could be UGLY. I’m crossing my fingers that Robinson returns and that Dionte Allen recovers from his surgery and then demonstrates why he was so highly ranked coming out of HS. Other than that, not a lot there that inspires hope.

by andy_wooster on Oct 16, 2008 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Ball -- lol, wrong Marcus

Sims … duh on me.

McMahon was getting lit up, although a couple times it looked like poor scheming — tough to ask a center to snap in the gun, then get over to a tackle who is almost playing straight over the LG.

On Capece, he was the place kicker when Rhon Stark was the punter. In my opinion, it was the best kicking game in the history of college football. Capece made 5FG vs. Pitt in the famous 1980 thrashing of Dan Marino, Hugh Green and Co. He was a stud. Jano had a bigger leg, but Capece was money.

You are so right on the DE’s — we lost contain WAAAAY too many times. Also, I thought our LB’s were much more tentative and reactionary — Nicholson finally attacked the hole on one second half play and I thought — “where has that been?”

Z. Sanders looks like he weighs about 230.

O Line

Undersized and would someone, for the love of GOD, country, and all things sacred and holy – please give a Football 101 class to these guys.

O Line

I like this O Line, light asses and all. Their footwork is incredible at times and above average most of the time.

Those tackles will only get stronger with time but FSU is jumping out ahead of the curve on athletic, agile offensive tackles to combat the pass rush specialists being created in the ACC.

Kinda refreshing seeing O lineman concentrating on technique, balance and leverage instead of the training table.

Those guys are not gonna blow D Lines off the ball but they’ll create running lanes and pick off second level guys all day long.

The pass protection is getting better every week and it was spectacular at times in that second half.

This group will lead a dominate FSU offense the next few years.

tell me you love me then remain an enigma.

Welcome to TNation!

I tend to think we must stay the course with these guys. IF the gain the muscle, we’re in good shape.
