What has happened to going deep to Carr?
Here are Greg Carr's statistics for his FSU career:
Year Receptions Yards YPC TD
2005 30 618 20.6 9
2006 25 487 19.5 10
2007 45 795 17.7 4
2008 16 212 13.3 2
It is easy to notice the trend downwards in YPC. I understand that Jeff Bowden had a "jump ball" offense and Jimbo's scheme is more complex.
My concern is that Jimbo is trying almost too hard to be un-Jeff Bowden. Carr is a HUGE red zone threat and also stretches the field to open up a thriving run game. I would like to see us have Surrency and Carr both running go routes and have CP throw to the side without safety help.
Thoughts?

I’m working on some school stuff right now, but I can tell you that I did a little project on Carr right around the time of the Weatherford report. People accused me of being anti-Nole, so I didn’t publish it. I found that Carr really beat up bad teams, and his numbers against good or elite clubs weren’t pretty. (More distorted than other receivers to be sure).
I’ll get the numbers when I find a minute, but if you want to look for yourself, check his page
The question starts to become: is Greg Carr a product of bullying bad teams? I’m not sure.
I see your point but....
I think it may be a case of calling the game loose against bad teams. For some reason, we don’t air it out as much to him against the better teams.
Now, don’t get me wrong….Carr has frustrated me with not catching the ball at the highest point and not going all out for passes. With that being said, he is more physically mature and experienced this year and I think we need to give him some additional chances. This is especially true in the red zone. The self-tip against Miami that got called back was pretty incredible.
that was one of the more "wow" type plays I've ever seen.
My take is this: his technique on those jump balls isn’t all that good, and he can get away with it against the bad teams. My guess is that the coaches often knew he wouldn’t perform as well over good corners. His route running is still questionable.
Does this show up correctly?

I agree, but.....
This is a whole new year. We have a mobile quarterback and a MUCH improved run game. Safeties and LB’ers are much more confused playing us than they have been with immobile DW and a non-existent running game. When Carr is matched up with under 6 feet tall corners, we NEED to take advantage of it and throw it up.
As I propose in another thread…have Surrency and Carr both run go routes out of a 3 Wr set. Whichever side does not have Saftey help, heave it up! If there is safety help on both sides, hit up a safety valve.
I am concerned our offense is too concentrated on the run, bubble, and short passing game. We need to stretch defenses out to keep them off balance.
BTW, your points on Carr are valid. I have never been a huge fan.
I can't argue with that.
The only thing I will say is that if the defense shows 4-3 Cov 3, we are wise to just hit the bubble over, and over, and over again.
The real issue, in my mind is: are we taking that because it is there, or because that is all we can run? My guess is the former. In practice, you can bet that we run a bunch of other stuff in practice.
Now, I bet we will see that chance this weekend. Va Tech will not give us a chance to bubble them to death.

So what does your gut tell you
we do against VT.
Does Jimbo really open it up or does he play conservatively to avoid turnovers.
My only concern with Jimbo is he sometimes holds back on some of his plays to try to limit mistakes. We need to let CP try to spread his wings this game, in my opinion.
At this point, I don't really know.
I don’t even know what to hope for.
On the one hand, I want to see us play wide open and score 35. On the other hand, if we play DrewBall, we can win this game by running 50 times, punting, and playing field position.
I do know that Va Tech blitzes like crazy. We want them to. We need them to. We can’t pass block their front 4, so we might as well have them bring 6, so that we can exploit single coverage.
I will disagree that Jimbo is calling a conservative game. There is a difference between repeatedly hitting the obvious play, and calling conservative.
My hope is we hit some play actions on first and 2nd down, using Max Protection, and launching to Surrency and Carr in single coverage. Surrency will out-leap their corners, he is that talented. The coaches were blown away that he didn’t come down with the ball.
I don’t think we see very many straight dropbacks with long routes. We just can’t block that well yet at 3 or 4 of our OLine spots.

I'd like to see more of Fortson this week
Especially with Reed out.
This doesn’t really pertain to the thread, but I LOVE Fortson as a weapon.
Have you seen his film in the Georgia Dome? Ridiculous.
What do you think we do this week?

I know. He is going to be a stud.
What do you mean, what do you think we do? As in game plan? Or as in result?
Bout to go to bed...but...
I have no idea.
I am flying down from Nashville with my girlfriend to Tally, so I really hope we put on a good performance.
The first quarter is so important. I really feel that if we get an early win, we can stay ahead and even win big.
If we let them score first or if the game turns into a field goal contest, I will get worried.
This is why I want to go deep to Carr or Surrency early. First play of the game would be ideal. I know establishing the running game is big, but I think we can do it reverse style this game. Establish the passing game to open up the running game.
I'm coming from Tuscaloosa, but don't plan on bringing sand to the beach.
We’ve been doing a great job of passing on first down, and throwing the bomb is a logical step.
Oh, I heard EJ looked great in practice these past 2 weeks.

What has happened to going deep to Carr?
Carr is weak, lacks physicality and does not understand body position. He has racked up some stats against DB’s who could not match his height with a properly thrown pass. If the ball is not perfect, he does not fight for it. A remnant of the Rix / Weatherford era.

I'm glad Jimbo listens to me!!
Carr was HUGE yesterday. I wish we would have tried a couple more times to get him the ball down field. Big performance by Greg yesterday.
Glad to see!
Love it when a player steps up after I put my big foot in my texting brain. Two great catches against Macho Man destroys old perceptions..Love to see more of play action with dual deep routes for Carr and Surrency to stretchem’ out!
