The 1st Battle for The Sunshine State: Florida State @ Miami! LiveBlog... Starts Now! Sign In!
Florida St. Seminoles at Miami Hurricanes, Oct 4, 2008 3:30 PM EDT
We hope you join us today for what is sure to be another great game as we travel to the face the team with a gang sign on their helmet.
First things first. If you were with us last week, you'll recall that I posted a youtube clip of the Undertaker coming back to wreck people, and analogized that to the rebirth of our offense after everyone wrote it off for dead. I promised to include a relevant WWF clip every week. This week I asked user Curtain Jerker to provide us with one, since he runs a WWF blog. Well, CJ is probably busy working or something, and he didn't come through. Like the true community that we are, however, user ZEST picked up the slack and came through with this awesome clip:
Hulk Hogan vs. Macho Man (via Lesbonic)
Macho Man and Hulk Hogan are Institutions of professional wrestling, and I feel FSU and Miami are institutions of college football. Not exactly what you may have been looking for, but this clip represtents these two guys in their prime, and I’d love to see these two programs back in their prime. It’s good for college football to have FSU and Miami fighting for a spot in the top 5.
I think he put that quite nicely.
If you are just joining us, welcome, but you have some catching up to do:
A detailed rundown of Miami's base defense
FSUncensored Answers questions for a Canes blogger
The canes blogger answers a few questions for Tomahawk Nation
The contest thread is up and available
Our fellow Nole Bloggers have been light on previews this week, but I do want to highlight Chantrant's excellent interview series with a Canes Blogger
If you're not in the yellow area, you really need to be here for live game updates and analysis!
As of 2AM Central time, this is what we are looking at for Tomorrow's weather:
| Evening Commute | See Pollen Hot Spots |
| 4pm |

86°F | 70% | 74°F | 74% | From E 9 mph |
| 5pm |

85°F | 70% | 74°F | 77% | From ENE 8 mph |

That's not great, but it's not terrible.
Our prediction still stands at 23-20, Noles. We are still waiting for Nigel to go into beast mode (he updates his facebook before games, indicating that he is entering the beast mode. Pretty cool).
I'll leave you with these videos

Watch how badly these 2 make fun of Maguire
They hate him. Sometimes they relegate him to some obscure place in the stadium, and it totally makes for an awkward broadcast.
LATE BREAKING NEWS
Starting weakside linebacker Colin McCarthy will not play due to a shoulder injury. (Miami)
This is big.
This is pretty classless for Randy Shannon.
Coaches are required to report all injuries on Friday. McCarthy was nowhere on the report.
i agree but i don’t think it gives them any advantage by not reporting it.

GO 'NOLES!!
so we dont get the game here in l.a…and im sick in bed and cant make it to big wangs to watch with the rest of us seminoles…so uh, i have my parents (in fl) on video ichat with the computer right in front of the tv so i can watch the game! lol….wow, it is a sickness, isnt it?
Lots of running early...
1st-10, FLSt43 A. Smith rushed to the right for no gain
2nd-10, FLSt43 A. Smith rushed to the right for 2 yard gain
3rd-8, FLSt45 C. Ponder rushed to the right for 12 yard gain
1st-10, MiaF43 C. Ponder incomplete pass to the left
2nd-10, MiaF43 C. Ponder rushed to the left for 2 yard gain
Ponder throws INT
Not the start we were looking for… Nessler said it’s Ponder’s first INT… I seem to remember a couple others
2nd down
Marve’s arm was hit as he threw and the ball floated asking to be picked off but nobody could get under it
We pretty much knew they wouldn't get push.
We need the Offensive Line to get cuts, angles, and jumps.
Does someone want to tivo this and send it to me digitally?
If not, we will not be able to have the reviews this week…. and it is a LONG week
Carter's INT
Great play by TC… They didn’t show many replays but it looked like Cover 2 and he read Marve’s eyes to come back and make the pick on the out route behind him… It looked very similar to the pick Alphonso Smith had against us on our 1st play of the Wake game
Not positive
but I think so… It was great… They only showed 1 replay but the way Carter picked it it looked like it was
Damnit Ponder!
I think he might have had Caz on the Play Action
2nd n down on the 10.
Very hard throw for Ponder.
Great blitz pickup by Sims
griese m;liked the throwaway!
DAMN!
Come On! You have to have a play there and ready! There has to be a hot call! Something ready to snap!
3rd n 7...
3 wide shotgun, straight drop, tipped, flag down, good chance we get holding.
If it’s PA, it will be negated.
If this is holding it is a first down!
Its not and its PI anyways.
The right call is holding, but whatever. FSU deserved the first down.
That was too easy
But I can’t complain cause it’s been too long since we’ve had those… Nice bounce by duece… where was the OLB or S to keep contain?
A DEFENSIVE LINEMAN'S DREAM! No inside Back, let's pin those ears back and EAT EAT EAT! Everette Brown Hungry!!!
1st n 10 at the 38 PLAY ACTION, deep, 2 recievers 2 defenders.
Not a good throw, but not maybe a messed iup route? 2 guys in the same place…
2nd n 3 from Miami 38
Come on FSU!
Fake end around motion, antone trips! had a hole, bad footing, but still got 1
drive fails, i dont like the blast block call there, but whatever. decent drive.
Jabarri must catch that ball.
WTH is up with kids dropping the damn ball.
Its not different then highschool!
Thanks, lol, I got here late and I was a little confused trying to figure out what was happening
lol
Usually around this time people are calling home, so the bandwidth is clogged
but hopefully it’ll clear up around midnight.
Is the running game working?
Or is it scrambles by CP? Seemed like the last drive we were in a bit of a groove
2nd n 7 from FSU 14ish Swing out to smith for 3
Didn’t really like the throw, floated too much, but he did stay in under the blitz
Bobby sez
“We have a great relationship with [the U] and our players have a great relationship with theirs”
Gotta love it
3rd n 3 for FSU. 5 wide.
Miami brings one, Ponder hits Parker on the 6 yard out! First down FSU! Stayed in the pocket Great protection OLINE!
We need to get more of those going
DBs are 10 yards off, get it to the WR and let them get you some yardage
ANTONE WANTS TO MAKE HIS NMONEY!!!!!
GREAT BLOCKING GREAT BLOCKING GREAT BLOCKING RODNEY JUST KILLED THAT CANE THUG!!!
FSU-Miami Ponder coming out party?
Are we witnessing something big?
lol
You guys have no clue how ecstatic I am right now.
I'm posting a Polls! Taje this Survey!
poll question:
Does Antone want to play int he NFL
How much extra money would you give Rick Trickett per month to Stay until he’s no longer functioning?
How pissed is Bama that they didn’t get Rodney Hudson?!
1st n 10.....
DEREK NICHOLSON JUST MET THE HALFBACK AT THE HANDOFF!!! LOSS OF 6!!! YESSIR BIG # 30! MIAMI’S LINEMEN ARE MORBIDLY OBESE!
Osceola,
I am having a few beers (rare in law school), and am also messing it up! No Biggie! Go Noles!
FSU STARTS AT OWN 20!
Guys, this is the drive to put the game away. Seriously. these fatasses cannot consistently pass block us if we get up 14-0!
In all seriousness though, we really need to play controlled football this drive. Let's chop these guys till their legs break!
Are we in better shape?
I thought Miami’s D-Line was going to kill our little O-Lineman who are all freshman.
Guys
Our defense is MURDERING THEM.
2 1st Downs
14 total yards
0 Passing
14 rushing
1 turnover
TOP 5:41
I thought our Pass D was really bad
evidently they’ve learned to cover people
2nd n 4
Designed run by Ponder, man we are aggressive tiny blockers. First down Ponder, run was for 6
1st n 10 from FSU 32
Great Great awarness, he misses the blitz and scrambles for 18ish! to the MIAMI 47!
Fake bubble, deep ball to Corey, decent throw, surrency catches it out of bounds.
2nd n 15 from FSU 47
4 down territory! 3rd down and 4
Lofts it to Fortson HUGE PAS SINTERFERENCE!!!! FIRST DOWN GREAT JOB Y FORTSON!
Where in the HELL did we learn to rush the football?
I love you Rick Trickett
I love you Jimbo Fisher
Who would’ve thought, a functional offense?
FSU STARTS AT OWN 20!
Guys, this is the drive to put the game away. Seriously. these fatasses cannot consistently pass block us if we get up 14-0!
Heck yeah!
Miami takes the kick to the FSU 38
Of all the times we pooch, with not this time?
Heck of a job by number 28 to keep him in.
Sack! Incompleyte? 3rd n 19
INTERCEPTED ON 3RD N 19!!!! EVERETTE BROWN MIGHT HAVE HIS HIS ARM!!!! DEKOTA WATSON PICKS IT!
We are DESTROYING THEM
In EVERY ASPECT OF THE GAME!!
I LOVE IT!
Every statistic, TOP Passing, Throwing, Defense Offense!
Guys
My internet is really really choppy tonight, just to let you know, sometimes its better than others, but I’m getting mass messages at once! I’m having a heart attack over here! this game is pretty much going perfectly!
3rd n 7, Middle Screen GREAT PLAY CALL AGAINST BLITZ, Ponder jump pass high, tough throw but still high
That was a tough play, could have been disasterous, but in the end, okay.
We Pooch Kicked out of bounds at the 43, haha.
Miami will have the ball in great position with 1:03 left.
Harriss in, 9 yard rush by Harriss.
Miami not taking a TO
Harriss rolls left, throws to our 23!
Mickey is in prevent, 3 men rush, and we lose contain! SHOOT ME.
Why in the hell does he do this?
Every damn time?
Are we getting the ball at the half?
What happened to Greg Cooper
I thought he was running really well?
1st n 10 on FSU 23
Harriss has to throw through a weird lane, but throw is high late and behind.
FSU needs to get pressure on this kid.
2nd n 10, Screen for 4 to FSU 19.
Timeout Miami, probably end zone shot then field goal try if we get the stop.
We need a stop
I hate the prevent, absolutely abhor it.
CP7
10 for 20
98 Yards
4.9 YPA
1 TD
1 INT
(At least one drop I remembered mentioned, maybe one more)
Miami QB's
Do I really need to post?
Ironically they are 5 for 15 for 38 yards and 2 interceptions
Which I believe mimics CP7 stats to begin the colorado or wake game,
I can’t remember
Which basically vindicates the analysis that you did last week
that CP7 is a better QB by far than his stats led one. It was a circus for a week on the TC
Rushing is just ridiculous.
CP7 9 for 107 11.9 per carry
Antone 16 for 65 4.1 per carry 2 TD’s
So 5 TD’s in 2 games.
Overall we’re 26 for 174 for 6.7 a carry and 2 TD’s
And Ponder is evidently looking like Colt Fricking McCoy
not quite as accurate as McCoy
but McCoy is a RS Junior and a 3rd year starter. Ponder has the potential to be a beast of a college QB before he is done.
Everyone predicted like 14-10 FSU, 24-21 FSU, 14-10 Miami
No one expected this
Thanks
Yeah, I was just dumbfounded that people would just watch 1 game see #’s in another and conclude that he was garbage.
Miami starts on own 42, Incomplete, Pass for 3, and the a Zone Blitz! Everette gets hands up and tips pass! Punt coming!
1st n 10 at FSU 22.
calm.
Also, Miami DE Moncur is out. Antone loss of 3. Stonewalled. Jimbo is getting too conservative.?
2nd n 13, Ponder strike on the slant to ponder
watch this though! Reed or someone jumpoed in the slot! we got lucky!
on 1st n 10, we had a horrible play.
Play action, should be a hold on Datko, dangerous throw by Christian on the out.
2nd n 10 from the Miami 49:
4 wide Gun, miami covers the bubble look, huge hand to thomas,
Flags down, looks like holding, offsides, and holding!, but the call is …. offsides
THOMAS FOR 31!!!
1st n 10 on Miami 18
4 wide gun… Designed run for Poinder, he does a weird weird looking backflip… ugh. The run is for 13 or 14. FIRST N GOAL!
1st n goal from the 5
Goal line set Smith TDDDDDDD
Great Blocking!!!!
Nobody touched him! Nobody within 5 yards.
Sedrick Holloway just kills him!!!!
Agreed
Doc, if you could see this… he is just so smooth. I’m not sure who he compares to. He looks like his legs are moving so slowly, he just glides.
Good Grief
CP7 121 yards on 10 carry’s 12 ypc
J. Thomas 2 for 51 for 25.5 ypc
A. Smith 18 for 61 3.4 ypc
I really really thought
that we wouldn’t be able to run? What is the deal? Is Miami just getting blown up?
Doc, we knocked out their DE with a great cut block and just cut cut cut,
Also, Sedrick Holloway has been a beast. Caz nice block as wrell
Run two plays
Lets see what transpires from here. Probably just a confidence thing.
31-10 Kickoff... Benjamin fields it
Louis Givens makes a TD saving tackle, but this was weird.
Also, on this play: Nigel pancaked a guy, then got Pancaked, and gets up to get back in the picture! This kid is a total beast. Garvin is down on the play!
Given that there offense can go no where unless we give them penalties
I’m kind of OK with the long returns.
Miami starts at FSUs 41
1st n 10, Pass Interference on Mangum but nice play overall.
Fine penalty, pass was over 20 yards.
Well
If we hold them to a field goal I’ll be more than happy, but not looking like it, lol, We gave them this drive. its all penalties.
29 yard field goal is good. 31-13, FSU
Guys, on a drive that starts at FSU’s 41ish, that’s pretty much okay.
I’ll gladly give up a 20 yard FG drive to knock down Marve that Often. Probably 7 hits
Well The down side of that
is that we can only add 64 yards to our rushing total! ;)
Safety punt/ kickoff from the FSU 20, to Miami's 20, Benjamin to the Miami 40... Louis Givens on the tackle, he is a special teamer all the way!
3rd n 8 from FSU 28, Spread, ball almost picked, pretty clear pass interference against Miami. parker is really animated. penalty is holding! Automatic First Down!
2nd n 14, 5 wide, we try to run a middle screen, Miami called timeout. 2nd n 14 left as we take a timeout with 3:49 left.
2nd n 14, Ponder is late on the slant throw I think.
3rd n 14 coming. I expect something safe here. maybe a deep jump.
OMG OMG OMG!!! ON 3RD N 14 WE DIDNT PLAY SAFE, BUR RATHER PONDER HIT EASTERLING ON A SKINNY POST BETWEEN 4 MEN FOR 27 YARDS!!!!!!! TO THE MIAMI 40!!!
BOHICA!!! BEND OVER HERE IT COMES AGAIN!
3rd n 7 Gun, trips left, roll left, great design, Ponder easy throw on out to surrency. first down for 13
3rd n 3, wow! Ponder throes a bit too hard for Carr.. Should have floated it. Damnm Field goal coming.
I would have put ponder on the move there, but protection was fine.
Marve looks like he's good in pressure when he has to win
like the unc game
OMG DOC!!!! WOWOWOWOW DID MARVE GET KILLED!!! WOW! DOC, WE ARE RUNNING ZONE BLITZES!!! EVERETTE BROWN ALMOST PICKED IT!
And Like UNC
An Interception with the game on the line.
OMG. Ponder hit on the play action out of his own end zone, ball straight up in the air, intercepted, td. Ridiculous.
Bert Reed takes the ball to the FSU 42 on the kick return, but block in the back pushes them back to the FSU 15
Ponder another 1st down and the 2nd time this year we've scored 30 points.
Let’s wait to look at the tape.
OH MY GOD. The ball hit the up back in the field goal formation. wow. Miami is going to get the ball inside of our 30
2nd n Goal from FSU 7
fade to Hankerson. Should possibly have been pass interference. 3rd n goal from the 6.
Man, I really doubt Christian ever contemplated throwin that. It is monsooning tonight. ON 1ST N 10 WE RUN A DAMN REVERSE!!!!!!!
1st down at the Miami 18. Ponder Play action, waits, waits, waits, hits Piurowski on a GREAT THROW for 10. Naked Bootleg.
Jimbo wants to live dangerously.
Know how we always rag on Antone for taking such choppy steps? That paid off like crazy here in the rain!!!!!
I am completely calm
I have no idea what to think right now.
Miami D is 16 for 16 on red zone
4th n 2 from Mia 42, this is the game, again. 2:08 We crush Marve, but they catch the slant, johnson breaks a tackle, and gets down to the FSU 32.
1st n 10 from FSU 32. DEREK NICHOLSON!!!!! WOW!!! GREAT JOB TO TRACK DOWN COOPER AND TACKLE HIM FOR A GAIN OF 1 AND KEEP HIM IN BOUNDS!
I don't really care if they get the TD
They don’t have time
What a great game
This is a pretty fricking good game
Agreed
I take issue with the crazy play action out of his own end zone in a monsoon, but besides that a very very good game.
Doc, we stayed way far ahead of the chains today!
We basically spanked Miami
in every facet of the game, but fluke plays allowed it to look a LOT closer than it actually is
I think 2 years ago, we lose this game by a touchdown. Jimbo probably said:
Look, we have kicked these gang bangers all over the field, lets just go and do it again.
Looking at the drive chart
we were very consistent
1st Downs 27 to 15
Total Yards 442 to 257
Passing Yards 159 to 206
Rushing Yards 283 to 51 (even though we can’t run on them, there D-Line is too big)
Total Plays 85 to 65
Penalties 12/98 to 10/83
Turnovers 4 to 3
TOP 39:23 to 20:37 (Almost doubled because we controlled the game)
We must be looking at different stats
First Downs 28 15
Passing 8 8
Rushing 18 5
Penalty 2 2
Third Down Efficiency 11-17 2-15
Fourth Down Efficiency 0-1 3-4

I am going to eat Crow!
First plate: Jimbo, I am sorry I said you’d go into a shell, playcalling wise!
Second Plate: Offensive Line, i didn’t think you could do it.
Done...
There was no live feed to monitor the game here in Germany. I had to “watch” the game via this blog, ESPN’s website and CNNSI. I never knew that monitoring a game on-line could be so friggin’ exciting, frustrating and satisfying all at the same time.
Well done ’noles — grateful for the win but still a long way to go to regain the greatness.
Fantastic work Tomahawk Nation. The blog was as good as being there.
Broadband
Any suggested links? I do have broadband but typically get spotty connectivity late in the evening when games are played, But I am willing to try.
