Bert Reed & Cameron Wade Charged With Misdemeanors

Update: According to Coach Bowden, there will be no further action taken against Reed or Wade, as they already served their suspension.  Contrast Update: ESPN Sportscenter reorts at 5:35 Central time that both have been suspended, again.

WCTV Reports

FSU police, working in consultation with the State Attorney’s Office, had obtained warrants for one count of battery each against Wade and Reed. The two men turned themselves in to the Leon County Jail today, posted bond and were released. Battery is a misdemeanor.

What do we think here? Will Reed serve any additional suspensions? Is he off the team or is he playing on Saturday? Those are two extremes and I just don't know what to expect. Since they are misdemeanors it means the FSU policy on felonies does not apply. I do not know if anyone from the fraternity was arrested.

Source: LeonCountyfl.gov

My Guess? Time Served.  These guys have no priors and these are not felonies.

The "no arrest streak" is broken.  It lasted 182 days, which is pretty impressive.  One day short of a half-year.

I also dont think he should be off the team

The other suspension was for missing a class (not the worst thing in the world) and this is a misdemeanor ( also not the worst situation as it could have been a felony). Maybe I’m just being optimistic. I could easily see the AD trying to make a statement and kick him off the team, which would be terrible for him and the team. He could be great.

No priors in the criminal court but reed has

priors on the team. Cut him. He is a talented player but makes too many off the field mistakes which show his lack of commitment to the team. Too harsh? Maybe, but if Florida State Football is committed to excellence, you don’t need this.

by MNeilson on Nov 26, 2008 3:46 PM EST reply actions

NO WAY

His priors were missing a class. We need him. This is only a misdemeanor. UNF, you have to accept a certain level of behavior.

by Bud Elliott on Nov 26, 2008 3:48 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly

it wasnt weed or fights or a DUI…it was freaking mssing a class, which any other year before the academic scandal would have been stadiums to run……we have all missed many classes in college let’s not kid ourselves here.

by ChileanNole on Nov 26, 2008 3:52 PM EST up reply actions

This was his third suspension

He was suspended for the Va Tech game for missing class, the Clemson game for sleeping in meetings, and the BC game for the fight. Somebody needs to sit this kid down and give him a good talking to because little incidents can lead to larger ones if not checked. Obviously the suspensions are not doing the job.

The thing that really ticks me off about Reed is that we all heard how hard it was for him to miss the Va Tech game and how he was going to turn over a new leaf…and then promptly gets suspended two games later…and then promptly gets suspended for the one after that. There’s a trend here.

I’m not saying he should be kicked off the team (he hasn’t done anything attrocious), but I think Bobby or Fisher (preferably) needs to sit down with this kid and seriously evaluate what he wants out of the program, what the program wants out of him, and how one needs to be responsible for oneself.

by evenflow58 on Nov 27, 2008 8:35 AM EST up reply actions

I heard his suspension for Clemson was for something different, but in any case

neither are really serious. Still, he does need to make sure to know why he is here and it can’t hurt to reestablish expectations.

by Bud Elliott on Nov 27, 2008 1:43 PM EST up reply actions

I somewhat agree...

…but he’s not exactly pulling Rouse or McPherson stuff so far. If I were the coaches and decided to keep him, I’d inform him how thin the ice is as this point.

hell no

recruited for the Jeff Bowden rainbow offense. Still couldn’t cut it.

by FSUSOM on Nov 26, 2008 3:51 PM EST up reply actions

They though he would be Carr 2

But he hasnt shown anything….rodney Smith is the type of 6’6" player we need.

by ChileanNole on Nov 26, 2008 3:53 PM EST up reply actions

Matter fact I bet Jeffrey

Saw a 6’6" player listed as a WR from FL and got all excited. Here is my answer!!! with him and Carr …I will be UNSTOPPABLE!!!!

by ChileanNole on Nov 26, 2008 3:54 PM EST up reply actions

Time served. Gotta believe Bowden and the coaching staff knew this was the likely course of action given privy knowledge to the details and decided to suspend the players for a game they thought they could win.

by CaStauch on Nov 26, 2008 3:57 PM EST reply actions

Any other year I would completely agree and be confident about that statement

But with the NCAA magnifying glass on us, I’m scared out AD department is gonna try to make an example out Reed, which would be unfair to him IMO. His past trangessions do not merit a dismissal from the team.

by ChileanNole on Nov 26, 2008 4:00 PM EST up reply actions

Who??

I hate to be on the news all the time, but it happens at every school (or at least schools that are elite or are trying to be elite) you are delaing with 18-22 yr kids that already think they are superstars by the time they get to campus. You are gonna have some off the field issues no matter what. I realize that I made generalizations and not all of our players will do those things, but it will happen again and again., unless we want to become Duke like you said before and only recruit character individuals and not compete. It sucks to admit it, but is the way things are unfortunately.

by ChileanNole on Nov 26, 2008 4:09 PM EST up reply actions

I despise this line of thinking (but not your proposition of it).

For us to believe that a harder-than-everyone-else policy will make up for the transgressions of the past is shortsighted, immature, and naive. The NCAA will see it as the transient policy that it is.

The wiser and more respectable course of action, in place of this false military bravado, everyone tuck their shirts and and go to every class, make ourselves into an academy MO would have been to hold ourselves accountable to the median, like the NCAA expects of every school.

Honestly, suspending a player anytime he sneezes is doing more harm than good. It’s forcing the NCAA’s hand to drive down harder on us instead of ease up. It’s creating a false sense of a loss of institutional control by publicizing every blemish.

by CaStauch on Nov 26, 2008 4:05 PM EST up reply actions

I can buy this, somewhat.

In the end I really don’t think our reaction, good or bad, will have much impact on their decision.

by Bud Elliott on Nov 26, 2008 4:08 PM EST up reply actions

Also

Are these charges even going to stick? Where’s the definitive evidence. Suspending them, again given the murky nature of the fight, would also be a bit presumptuous.

by CaStauch on Nov 26, 2008 4:14 PM EST reply actions

As we've discussed previously,

if the girl hit with the Chair won’t make a statement, nothing big will come of this. Now, why won’t $he make a $tatement? Any idea$ here?

by Bud Elliott on Nov 26, 2008 4:17 PM EST up reply actions

Impressive?

Hardly… 182 days is pathetic. They should be staying out of trouble.

by NoleCC on Nov 26, 2008 4:20 PM EST reply actions

Compared to UF it is downright amazing.

They have players getting arrested every week.

by FSUSOM on Nov 26, 2008 4:30 PM EST up reply actions

Compared to any elite school is impressive

I dont understand some people. 18-22 yr old kids that are treated as freaking superstars since they are 15 (for the most part) and then go to a city where they live on their own and are treated as kings, will get in trouble. You cannot stop it. Miami has done a good job of it so far and I really dont know how, but they are not doing good on the field and the new players Shannon is bringing in are bound to get in some trouble.

by ChileanNole on Nov 26, 2008 4:38 PM EST up reply actions

What are your expectations?

I say 182 days is impressive. Consider recent streaks for other schools.

by Bud Elliott on Nov 26, 2008 4:33 PM EST up reply actions

My expectations

are that a player arrests (not to be confused with coaches having to discipline the kids) are the rare thing, and not the norm, which they are now.

by NoleCC on Nov 26, 2008 4:41 PM EST up reply actions

They are the norm everywhere!

Cameron Newton ring a bell?? how baout in Alabama where a player got caught dealing cocaine to fellow students…come on man you cant be that naive. No elite team will ever be exempt from arrests, unless they do a good job of hiding stuff.

by ChileanNole on Nov 26, 2008 4:43 PM EST up reply actions

It’s just cocainne though…

by evenflow58 on Nov 27, 2008 8:37 AM EST up reply actions

I agree w/ pbysh. Bert and Cameron have already served their suspension and will be good to go from here on out.

Where did you get they are suspended?

“No suspensions have been announced for Saturday’s game against Florida.”

by pbysh on Nov 26, 2008 5:51 PM EST up reply actions

So, the guys who were not arrested, suffered the same punishment as the guys who were arrested. That doesn’t seem right. Either Surrency and Easterling didn’t deserve to be suspended in the first place or Reed and Wade deserve more punishment.

by Jaguar on Nov 26, 2008 6:18 PM EST reply actions

The Athletic Department probably worked a deal like the academic thing...

tell us what happened and we won’t expell you. The five of them probably admitted to being involved and were suspended one game for it. There was probably only enough evidence to charge Reed and Wade. Also, since it is a first offense for both of them, they will probably get into a “rehab” or community service program and the charges will be dropped. I’d personnally like to hear a public apology with some type of “this is a wake up call” statement and forget this happened.

by TBfisherman on Nov 26, 2008 8:03 PM EST up reply actions

Would love to see the national media even mention the frat and their involvement...

Thanks Heather for at least squeezing in that the football team was involved in a fight with “members of a fraternity…” Of course the discussions will be that two Florida State football members were arrested for starting a fight in the student union resulting in a girl getting injured because a chair was thrown at her…of course we don’t know the details, but I am not looking forward to the spin presented on Saturday. (As always, I hope that those who were injured have a speedy recovery and everyone involved should know that none of this was necessary.)

Brad Nessler (play-by-play), Bob Griese (analyst), Paul Maguire (analyst), and Stacey Dales (sideline).

These guys are cemented in their jobs and won’t harp on this too much. Nessler is a big ACC guy and a GTech homer.

by Bud Elliott on Nov 26, 2008 9:20 PM EST up reply actions

Not from Reed or Surrency I wouldn't

We’ve already heard it before from them.

Although they did (I believe it was Reed) say they shouldn’t have gone down there in the first place.

by evenflow58 on Nov 27, 2008 8:38 AM EST up reply actions

My comment was in reference to the apology

No, Surrency has likely burned any chance he has at a second year with his actions.

by evenflow58 on Nov 27, 2008 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

I know,

I was just stating that they will probably be forced to write letters of apology after their adjudication. As always, actions speak louder than words.

As a side note, are you hearing anything on how Fortson looks in practice?

by Bud Elliott on Nov 27, 2008 2:01 PM EST up reply actions

Haven't a clue

but it’s tough to get to practice from Richmond, VA

Who threw the chair

Does anyone know an update or anything about which person threw a chair durring the brawl, it seems like once they figure it out the person will be charged with a felony

by dj2fsu on Nov 26, 2008 9:29 PM EST reply actions

chair

I doubt it will be reported. There are probably too many conflicting stories about it, or the chair part was less violent than originally reported. I think if anything was going to come out of it, they would have charged someone by now. Several people have mentioned that the girl who was hit does not want to press charges as well.

by TBfisherman on Nov 26, 2008 10:04 PM EST up reply actions

warchant

I read on warchant where the police is still trying to find out who threw the chair, so it seems like they are still going to dish out more charges.
