MBB Game 7: Cal 77, FSU 80 (Vegas)

California Golden Bears at Florida St. Seminoles, Nov 29, 2008 10:30 PM EST

We had a 12 point lead with 1:38 to go... and hold on to win by 3.  I'll take the win.  Good defense for most of the night.

This was a complete free throw fest because of our end game tactics.

Pretty evenly played because LH made some really sketchy decisions in the end-game situation.  This was an important win for this young team as the Noles move to 7-0!

This is a nice end to a pretty poor, though expected, day.

GAME 8: Northwestern.

Star-divide

Last night the Noles defeated Cincinnati in the Semis of the Global Sports Challenge in a low scoring, poor shooting, defensive battle that Ryan Reid took over to lead the Noles to Victory.

Looking to go 7-0, the Noles take on the Cal Bears in the Finals of the tournament tonight in Vegas.

The game is at 10:30 Eastern, from vegas.  ESPN2!!  Preview Inside

Progress:

"We were much more aggressive on the boards and executed our offense better and showed signs of growing against a veteran team," FSU coach Leonard Hamilton said.

Last night the Noles took on a very good Cincinnati ball club in a battle and we came out on top, earning a huge victory for our young Noles. Tonight, they take on an even bigger opponent in Cal, who is ranked 14th in the Pomeroy Ratings. Finally the rest of the country can see our team play, we're on ESPN 2 tonight! So if you're still awake, sober enough to remember or care about FSU basketball...it should be a great game.

Here's Cal's numbers:

They shoot the ball extremely well, especially from the new 3 point line. They don't turn the ball over and protect the ball very well. They get up and down the court but they don't get to the line.

Look at their defense...They don't steal, they don't defend the shot well and they don't send this opponents to the line. That last one will be the key to our success. If...a big if...we can get to the line we might be able to stay in this game. But the likelihood of us getting the calls against Cal is low.

We have improved in most aspects though the early part of the season. This will be one of toughest tests before ACC play begins...oh wait we play Florida in a week. We still turn the ball over a lot, but that isn't Cal's style. If we can defend well, particularly on the perimeter we'll be in this one. Unfortunately, I think our chances of going 7-0 are low. This is an excellent test to see what kind team we have. Unfortunately, Cal ran away from UNLV from the start and we were stuck in a dog fight most of the game.

Look forward to hearing your thoughts!

Go Noles!

And I have it at 15-13 Cal
They do shoot well (7/15) and don’t foul much.
We’re going to have to keep the TO’s down and execute on offense to pull this one out.

That’s all I got for now

FSU takes their first lead since early in the ball game

Old fashioned 3 pt play by the X-Man and then TD drains from long range.

by CelticPride on Nov 29, 2008 11:04 PM EST reply actions

This team is starting to take shape.

We play very aggressive defense and at least attempt to funnel stuff inside. We take lots of chances on defense because we have the shot blockers.

Alabi will have to become tougher to stay in the game during ACC play. If he can we could be dangerous for a few upsets. If he can’t, we’ll just have Reid punch anybody that comes within arm-length.

They cooled down quite a bit - 3/10

And we definitely did a good job getting to the line in the second 10 min.
32-23 Noles at the half.

Cm’on – let’s salvage today

I have been thinking about Ham and he still hasn’t had the chance to play with a full team yet. He finally has some big men. He has been hurt by some stuff out of his control. (Jon Kreft & AJ going pro). I think he deserves more time. Defense wins championships.

by TBfisherman on Nov 29, 2008 11:35 PM EST reply actions

I agree to a certain extent. However, some of that is Ham’s doing. He’s had too many misses in recruiting for it to just be chance. I think you have to take chances on some of the players considering where FSU is coming from (can’t really match up with any of the better programs in facilities, tradition, or current record) but he is getting us to the point where we don’t have to take as many chances (see Singultary and Snear).

Echefu

If he turns out to be a dependable player, you have to credit the coachong staff. That bodes well for Alabi.

Any thoughts on Northwestern yet?

Looks like they play some solid defense.

That's fine. I'm not trying to make a living off T'Nation.

Dot doesn’t want us posting sections of premium articles. I’ve agree not to go beyond the bounds of the fair use doctrine. I assume that article is free, and not premium, and I can’t see the harm in giving the guy free publicity.

If you see any of our original research over there, without being cited, definitely let me know. Turnabout of inly fair play.
