Florida State struggling with injuries to their wide receivers
- Preston Parker is not practicing with the team. He has an ankle injury. "It's a lot of watching, but when you're watching it's better than just sitting there. When you're coming out and helping you feel like you're still practicing a little bit and it makes you feel good. I just go in [the training room] and work hard, because [my teammates] are our here working hard trying to get better." I consider him doubtful for the Champs Sports Bowl. At least this confirms that FSU doesn't blatantly lie on their practice reports. Remember back when Ponder didn't practice all week? They didn't list him in the "highlights" because he wasn't making any. Like Ponder, Parker is absent from the recent practice reports as well. If he doesn't play, it will probably not be a big deal. It is not as if the entire team is distracted over a fight or something. Receiver is the deepest position for the Noles. Taiwan Easterling has an ankle injury and Row Owens has a groin injury-- I expect those two to play.
- Andrew Carter reports that Parker will return to school unless he is projected as a 2nd round draft pick or better. He won't be-- at least not by any reputable source. An agent might trick him. Parker is a good but not great college player whose physical skills and checkered past (he has at least one kid and multiple arrests) should keep him out of the first 2 rounds even if he has a big campaign next year.
- An issue nobody wants to talk about: Academic Ineligibility. Grades were available online yesterday. Who screwed around this semester? Who flunked out? Who didn't take care of business? We want to know, but we want to do this in an orderly fashion. This is just a fact of life in college athletics and some academic attrition should be expected. If you hear something about a player being ineligible for the bowl game, e-mail us at FSUncensored@gmail.com
- Also inside... Rick Trickett, a note on Bowden's possible retirement, a bowl game note, and thoughts about Miami
- As for the Rick Trickett situation... I think this is mostly nothing. My take on what might have happened (I am making this up. This is hypothetical. I am not asserting this as fact) : Trickett wants a new deal, approaches hardheaded athletic director Randy Spetman about a new contract (Trickett is in year 2 of a 3 year deal running through the 2009 season), Spetman tells him to get in line, Trickett gets annoyed, as he is one of the best in the business, yet being treated like any other coach on the staff (despite being far superior to some of the defensive guys in talent and work ethic). Spetman tries to show who is boss and play the "he's under contract right now" card. Bottom Line: Trickett is the 3rd most important coach to this program (Fisher & Coley), and should be shown more respect than he is getting. If the administration wants to play games, play them with coaches who don't work hard or are constantly entertaining pipe dreams that they might get another head coaching job despite being 60+ years old and widely considered a joke in the coaching community. That said, he should expect to get his new deal and I don't think he wants to keep moving his family around the country. Feathers ruffled, but nobody is flying the coop; some even feel an agreement has been reached.
- I apologize for relaying the rumor about Patrick Nix and Guz Malzahn. I should have done a better job of independently checking sources and asking the original source about the origin of the rumor. Hopefully Nix is still in Miami when the Noles host the Canes in primetime on ESPN, September 5th! Have no fear, Florida State fans... these opening day games favor the team with the more experienced offense, and that is the Noles. If possible, I'd want to play Miami in June.
- On the other hand... Miami QB Robert Marve will not play in the bowl game and will return to Tampa, FL, his hometown. Rumors of his imminent transfer run rampant.
- Yahoo sports reports that From all indications, Bowden will return for another season. But whenever he retires, look for it to happen suddenly. Bowden has said in the past he does not want to announce his retirement before a season or before a game. He wishes to walk away without any fanfare during a game.
- I've heard the Champs Sports Bowl will have to open the upper deck as the 50,000 tickets have been sold.

How bout the injuries
Well its good to know that they dont lie on their practice reports. We should be ok at WR spot for the bowl game, like you stated thats our most depth. oh yea, and something to through in while were talking about recievers, my theory on why jimbo is recruiting big WR is for his blocking schemes. ?? Just a thought. What do you think?
by fsupride on Dec 18, 2008 2:02 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I actually think he is taking them to use their physicality against the smaller defenders many teams use to combat the spread
passing game.
The blocking is an added bonus, but it is entirely overrated. For whatever reason, announcers love to talk about it. Nobody gets paid to block. Receivers are just that— receivers. Now, once you get them here…
insisting that they block is just fine.

Parker
I think Parker is vastly overrated. I’m not going to remember the game, but he broke a long reverse in a home game in the mid-season and simply had no extra gear at all. If had been a scout watching that game I would have written DND next to his name.
I think NFL scouts will look at him and won’t be able to get two words out of their head: Peter and Warrick.
On Trickett, if the situation is anything close to what you painted, it’s yet another in a long line of symptoms of our overall dysfuction. This is what happens when an organization puts value on longevity and legacy, not on performance. The people who actually perform are undervalued, underappreciated and eventually leave.
On Bowden, I do believe he’ll go out the way they suggest. On this point, this thought pops into my head: Everybody is assuming the Paterno extension will hurt us in that it will harden BB’s resolve to stay and hold the win record.
But what if it’s such a strong play by Joe Pa that it actually causes Bowden to fold up his tent and cry “uncle.” Not a likely scenario, but not out of the realm of possibility.

Clemson, I think.
He is a good college player, who runs above average routes. That said, with his attitude and off-field stuff, I would not draft him. In this day and age, it’s not worth losing a 1st rounder because a scrub is acting out (remember the Bengals lost a draft choice over player conduct).

Very realistic chance that PSU will play only 4 bowl teams next year and the lead could be huge after ’09.

trickett.
To use the earlier mentioned style of emphasis…BOTTOM LINE: he cant go anywhere. You eat yourself a nice serving of humble pie and pay the damn man. Ridiculous. Im so sick of pride getting in the way of taking care of the people who are rebuilding the program. This shouldnt even be a blurb. The man gets results. Look at the track record for Effs sakes. The thought of losing him seriously angers me.

Looks like it
Spetman said he will also sit down with assistant coach Rick Trickett following the bowl game. Trickett’s three-year deal, worth $300,000, ends on Jan. 9, 2010.
Spetman declined to address details of the meeting with the assistant head coach, who has coached three freshman All-America offensive linemen in two years.
“Normal course, I start to negotiate with my coaches a year out,” Spetman said. "I don’t wait until they are done.
found here
From the information I have this is being handled fine and in line with Spetman’s policies. If he waits until one year out then wait until one year out. You can create problems in an organization with favoritism especially when it comes to contract negotiations.

ARRRGGGHHH
As a manager, one of my biggest pet peeves is when managers refer to subordinates as “my xxxxxx.” “My assistant” or “my clerk "or "my coaches.” It just seems like such an artificial way to boost the worth of the manager — like he OWNS the person of whom he is speaking.
Anyway, can’t come up with a more minor point than that, but it really irks me.

Is it official
That we play Miami on labor day? Ive hears rumors, but is anything official? I kind of missed the labor day game this year.

I didn't miss it.

No, but...
I think it makes sense. We return 9 offensive starters. I want to play them on opening night.
People fail to understand that offenses usually aren’t ready in the first game of the year if they’ve undergone big changes. Our offense, however, will be ready. Let’s get Miami out of the way.
by Bud Elliott on Dec 18, 2008 2:26 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I understand it's advantageous (and I think most do)...
…but I hate the game. Now the casual FSU fan, which may be all that exists anymore, looks forward to the first and last game of the season and cares nothing about the 10 games inbetween. Not what we need right now. FSU-Miami is perfect in October.

I didnt
love playing on labor day, but it gave us good exposure, although a lot of it was bad exposure lol. I just think it is cool to play Miami the first game of the year, and I agree with uncensored saying we would have the advantage next year if it happened.

Bowden has said so many things before that he's renegged on.
But he’s very close to assuring himself that he’ll “walk away without any fanfare.”
Boy, aren’t I the Negative Nancy today? Good analysis on the Rick Trickett situation. Seemed pretty cut and dry to me too. And it also appeared that another site was playing the whole thing up to sell subscriptions, which I don’t throw out there lightly – I like to think that’s not the case, and I may reserve judgment as I can’t remember seeing anything there in recent memory that’s as blatant as what I’m suggesting. (Does anyone know if they’re hurting? This is all based on a simple observation, nothing more.) Anyway, we all know our administration is incompetent, but that neither side would have interest in parting ways. Their headline had him out the door with his suitcase packed. (Sign up now!)

Off Topic --- Alabama
Are they racking up some amazing talent or what?
Julio
BJ Scott
Mark Barron
Alonzo Lawrence
Dre Kirkpatrick
Danta Hightower
Trent Richardson
DJ Fluker
Nico Johnson
Darrington Sentimore
All all “five star” talents right there. And I am probably forgetting someone too. With Nick Saban as coach. Those Bama-UF battles are going to be HUGE.

Their schedule next year sets them up to go undefeated.
4 road games, likely to play TWO ranked teams.

Next year has a lot of really interesting teams.
OKie State Spanks UGA Sept 5th, but if Stafford comes back, UGA will be in contention for the Natl Champ.
UF is @ LSU and at SoCar, but neither are serious threats to beat a loaded Meyer coached team. UGA could.
Texas: 2009 OOC schedule lends itself to another snub (hopefully)
Sep. 5 Louisiana-Monroe
Sep. 12 at Wyoming
Sep. 19 UCF
Sep. 26 UTEP
by Bud Elliott on Dec 18, 2008 4:08 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Figure Texas would learn, but oh well.
I will really interested to see LSU next year. I think Stafford is gone unless he doesn’t want to go to the Lions. UGA-Florida is quickly getting unhealthy. I think there is going to be a fully fledged fight next year. Can’t wait.

How many more years do they give Miles?
I say two more years max and then a good coach comes in and wins immediatly with all that talent.

learn from what?
The schedules are made years in advance. I hope they would’ve learned from this year, but we wouldn’t see the effects of that for some time.

They could easily drop one of the four patsies and schedule a BCS conference team
See what ’Bama did to pick up VTech on short notice.

one of mack brown's glaring flaws is his refusal to put together a decent OOC schedule
That said, even with the pathetic OOC slate, Texas’ schedule was still top-20 this past year. And if they go undefeated next year they’ll be in the MNC. The schedule gives them no room for error, though.

Oct. 10 Eastern Illinois
Oct. 17 Minnesota
Oct. 24 at Michigan
Oct. 31 at Northwestern

Joe Pa's cupcake schedule
Is an absolute joke. In 2007 I believe PSU played their four OOC games versus four of the seven worst teams in Division 1 or whatever they are calling it now. This year was almost as bad and next year it is more of the same.
Of course it has nothing to do with trying to stay ahead of Bobby. Nothing at all.
by CFCNole on Dec 18, 2008 9:23 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I will credit PSU for at least playing a Pac10 team this year,
but the ACC is Clearly in the top 2 conferences (w/ B12 this year).
The SEC just doesn’t have it right now. If Stafford and Moreno leave, the SEC might not have it yet again.
by Bud Elliott on Dec 18, 2008 9:26 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
True but
It’s not like the Rabid Beavers are typically the cream of the P-10’s crop. Taking nothing away from OSU I am guessing when PSU scheduled this game they were thinking it would be a cake walk (which it was). That being said I get your point about them being a team from a decent conference.
