Around SBN: Ohio State And Florida Target 2013 Receiver Recruits

Florida State 42, Wisconsin 13 Post your reactions

Great field position cures most ills.  The 'Noles offense played really poorly in the 1st half.  The defense allowed over 6 yards per carry.  The offensive line couldn't block anyone and I coined the term "McMahonHandled", as our center got rocked into the backfield.  Our running backs combined for 9 yards on 9 carries.  Ponder had no time to throw and clearly had trust issues as he was getting absolutely rocked.

Luckyily, Graham Gano pinned Wisconsin inside their own 3 yard line three times.  Wisconsin mounted long drives, but those drives started at their own three and eventually stalled.  FSU used its speed to score on a poorly thrown lateral pass by Wisconsin that went 70+ yards for a fumble recovery.  Right before half the Noles scored as Carr made a great catch in the corner of the end zone.  Despite leading 14-3, we had been thoroughly outplayed on offense and defense.  Usually, special teams don;t matter unless they are elite or terrible.  The Noles special teams were elite.

Wisconsin HC Brett Beliemia said that they were running the ball down the Noles throat and that he would continue to do so.  He was right on the first count.  Wisconsin ran it down the Noles throats to cut the lead to 14-6.  After that drive, Wisconsin would enter FSU territory only once until garbage time.

The Nole offense began blocking people, and scored three second half TD's.  Ponder had a little more time and it helped a ton, as he went from 9/18 116 1TD/ 0INT in the first half, and 9/12, 89 yards 1TD/ 0 int in the second half.  The backs who had 9 yards on 9 1st half carries had 94 on 17 second half carries.  Bobby Bowden correctly diagnosed the problem as "we're not blocking them." at half.    The game quickly got out of hand as FSU was the much more talented team.  Over time, talent usually shows up.  Everette Brown did a strip job on the Wisky QB as the Badgers abandoned the run too early after going down 21-6.  Wisconsin's passing game was laughably bad and we repeatedly destroyed them.

I am more satisfied with the result than the process, but I'll take it.  FSU played about a "B" game, while Wisconsin played a "D."  The Noles will be ranked in the final poll for the first time since 2005 (# 23, at 8-5).  The next step for the 'Noles is the recruiting season.

Post Game

It could have been a little better it could have been a lot worse. I’m genuinely proud of out guys focus going into the second half; they could have easily lost it. Overall, I can’t imagine being much more pleased with a final outcome going into the second season of recruiting.

PS- “McMahon-handled” is classic and accurate. He was McMahoncaked all afternoon.

Most under-rated Nole this year

Neefy Moffett.
Made game changing plays all year long, specifically this game and Clemson.
Noone ever talkes about him, but he has been huge this year.

To carry over from the previous thread...

I missed them making Mickey Andrews the player of the game. Did they really do that? If they did, I’m hoping that’s his capstone and he bows out with a big Chevrolet player of the game certificate and eventually the practice fields named after him.

Naming the practice fields after Mickey would be fitting.

Must have clips of his famous angry faces.

My dad used to joke when I was young: “I’d hate to deny that man his grilled cheese.”

I always knew M.A. as a great half time adjustment maker, is there anything we can put in about that in his tribute?

Talk about how Mickey owned Spurrier in his prime.

Could you please mention the ’97 Miami game? My favorite Mickey moment was when Miami was driving on us late and MA put the first team back in to prevent UM from scoring. I went bananas when Samari got the pick.

My thoughts

The good:
Carlton “Ty” Jones
Ponder in the 2nd half
Offensive line in the second half
Givens
Secondary
Special Teams
Antone Smith and Carr’s final game
No dropped passes

The bad:
Offensive line in the 1st half
Ponder in the 1st half
Defensive line
Overall tackling

The ugly:
Personal fouls

The game went pretty well, but there were really not that many good performances by underclassmen. The stars of the game were Smith, Carr and Brown, and none of those guys are back. Ty Jones looked good, Thomas did not. Ponder was up and down, though he did have a nice 2-0 ratio. Young WRs were a little quiet but did nothing wrong. No drops. Markus White made some nice hits. Best our secondary has looked in forever, but keep in mind Wisconsin only ran or threw to the TEs nothing else.

I give this game a B+. The seniors played well and I am happy for them. I am excited for next year, we’ve got a lot coming back. There is some pressure on 1st time starters like Hopkins/Hobby, Thomas/Jones/Pressley, and our secondary. If those guys do well we should be in pretty good shape.

Thoughts

I loved the way our offense played in the 2nd half. I was impressed with Louis Givens, the kid is a playmaker. Mcmahon did get manhandled, but our whole o line pretty much did in the 1st half. I thought Greg Carr ended his career on a good note. Overall im pleased with the result. It is a lot better ending the season with a win rather than a loss like last year!

by fsunole23 on Dec 27, 2008 10:05 PM EST reply actions

Thoughts on Carr's draft status?

He started his career at a blistering pace and received high praise nationwide, but fizzled as his career went along. Any thought how high he goes?

by NOLEinTX on Dec 27, 2008 10:21 PM EST up reply actions

4th/5th round

He’s a talent but doesn’t have the speed or hands right now. Some team will hope his hands and route running gets better.

He’s good but not great at catching the deep ball. I know he has a bunch of catches on those, but think about how many times we’ve thrown it.

Still, his combination of size and skill is rare. He could be a Jerevicious type.

by tdchrisdavis on Dec 27, 2008 10:45 PM EST up reply actions

A few quick thoughts

Everyone else has said this, but I’ll echo it: The blocking got a lot better in the second half. In what I’m sure isn’t a coincidence, the offense got a lot better in the second half.

I’m excited about the progression of this very young offensive line, and I look forward to seeing how good they (hopefully) get.

Okay, while I want Miami to win

They are scaring me.

Their whole team appears to be freshmen, and they are showing talent.

Their RB Chambers looks very good. Johnsond Byrd are good receivers. Very good. Harris looks pretty good. They do have Nix though, who is our JB. Not sure how I feel about Shannon. I still think Coker was better.

OT: Did anyone else see that fiaso at the end of the Emerald Bowl?

I’m too shell-schocked to discuss it rationally, but Miami just had the worst two-minute drill that didn’t end in a turnover I’ve ever seen…Thankfully Patrick Nix is still there.

I heard that they took shots at FSU and weren’t too complimentary of the players. What’s with that? You’re from Wisconsin and had a disappointing season going 7-5 (in the Big Televen no less). How can you attack any other team?

Finally watched the game...

I was on call last night so I’m watching the final minutes of the game.

The first half was brutal. We were tentative and our offensive line played like freshman in their first bowl game…oh wait, they are freshman playing their first bowl game. I think our athleticism and conditioning made a huge difference in the second half.

Once we settled in, made our adjustments, it was on cruise control. I think our defense was their from the start and was bailed out by Gano. He is ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous.

I’m so happy to see the team end on such a high note. This was a big moral boost and will help recruiting significantly. Even though Wisco had a down year, beating a Big Ten (Eleven) Team like this is huge. Not like many Florida/South East recruits flock to Wisconsin, but his certainly helps.

Well done. Lets get the coaching figured out, get some of the big name recruits and bulk up that offensive line and pray that the defense recovers from everyone who is leaving.

Go Noles…don’t forget about the basketball team this winter…their season has paralleled the football team this year.

McMahon

I usually am too busy following the way plays develope than watching specific lineman but I didn’t look much at McMahon. I surprised he was knocked around. They guy is usually a horse in there.

The line followed the usual progression, outweighed and not as strong in the first half but they are in better shape and faster than the competition usually. When they beat up dlines with cut blocking for a half they don’t want to play any more by the second half. Hence we see Ponder seem to amazingly get better. Ponder is a decent quarterback. All qbs need time to throw.

Only two things I haven't seen posted yet...

…unless I missed them. I was at the game.

1. For anyone who doesn’t know, your local city dump’s got nothing on the Citrus Bowl. Those of us local to the Orlando area know this all too well. The next time you have a chance to visit this stadium for a non-FSU-related event, pass. Otherwise, wear OSHA-approved safety gear. I actually felt the bleachers settle a little when the crowd got hot in the third quarter. Thankfully, had they collapsed, the mulch that covers the dirt floor of the stadium would have broken my fall.

2. Wisconsin is easily the worst Div. 1-A football team we played this year. No offense to Colorado, whom I also saw in person – and no offense to FSU fans who are celebrating this win, as any Nole fan should be – but Wisconsin is a slow, poorly-conditioned football team. And I know this isn’t headline material for anyone on this board, but to see this team in person made the first half especially frustrating. It was obvious in the pre-game warm-ups alone that we had the recipe for the rout, and the play of the offensive line in particular in the first half drove most sane FSU fans in attendence nuts. However, sanity seemed to be a commodity on Saturday as most Nole fans were busy chanting “Bobby, Bobby!” when the game got out of hand in the 4th quarter. (Ah, the nostalgia win. Am I really just becoming a prickly old man in my early 30’s, or is it okay that I threw up in my mouth a little?)

Anyway, while I’ve stumbled onto the subject, if the “Bobby” chant came across on TV and you were wondering at the time just how prevelant it was, I’m pretty sure it was every FSU fan in the stadium besides me. Maybe, like I said, it was simply nostalgia and they were partying like it was 1999, or maybe the hostages were simply praising their captor, I don’t know – but I found it to be very, very creepy. Yes, that’s the best way I can describe it. It was very unsettling to me. A “Mickey” chant would have been a much more appropriate gesture to a very deserving coach who most loyal followers should have known is at the very most a year away from saying good-bye to FSU. And considering you can barely get a “Bobby” chant started at Doak these days, it leads me to believe that many of these fans were indeed casual fans who won’t travel to Tallahassee anymore and decided they’d spend some Christmas dollars on the bowl game. I guess that’s a positive.

As others have said, I’ll take the win!

P.S. A note about Holly Rowe and a television myth I was able to debunk over the weekend: The camera does not add 10 pounds.

I was at the game as well

and to be honest I did not hear the Bobby chant. Maybe the beer got to me but no one around me was singing it.
We were poor in the first half and talent won out in the second half. Gano is the MVP for the season not just this game.

by CFCNole on Dec 29, 2008 10:29 PM EST up reply actions

Phew, maybe it wasn't as bad as I thought.

However, it was deafening on my side of the stadium. A beer would have been nice.

And yes, Gano is owed apologies from every Nole fan who loves to say, “Do you realize we were only one play away from being 11-3!!” How many Gano field goals were we away from being 6-6? He will be missed.

i was there..

and while new was thinkin of displayin my thoughts. Ill go here since I laughed when reading your thoughts about the bobby chants. I was sitting in the corner where FSU came out from.

First of all, wow. That was the most boring game I had been too in some time. In the first half, our offense was absolutely terrible. I could not believe that we had two TDs at the end of the half. Certain play calls made me think JB was around to be honest.

Secondly, I’ll be honest, I think our fans are spoiled as all hell. There were people angry at two guys who wouldnt sit down. FSU fans are either too old or something, but I bet if it was a UF game, their fans would be standing the whole time. Maybe its that Im only a few years removed from being a student, but I just think we have too many damn people sitting. Look alive folks.

I also have to agree about how terrible Wisconsin is. I am not one to give the most insightful analysis, but watching them in person…not a whole lot to brag about. Their first what, 15 plays, and one pass? Once we had a big enough lead where they had to pass, thats when the rout was on.

I cant write without talking about Gano. I dont know what it was like to watch on TV, but in person…wow. He owned the game. He is the most responsible player for the victory. They kept spotting the ball at the one, but they were cheating him out of half a yard every time. I dont know how, but the ball would go out at what looked like the one inch line. Just ridiculous. I started an MVP chant for him after the second punt in the one, didnt last long, but hey I wanted to do it. When being interviewed after the game, that fat cow had the nerve to ask about the personal foul where he acted. At the time, I didnt see that he was not hit, but I dont care in hindsight. That stupid idiot should be behind a fat frier at McDonalds. Ugh.

Now regarding the chants , i participated, but I did it (and I think most fans as well) hoping to create enough good will that he would be overwhelmed with emotion and be like, this is a good way to go out. A blowout on a national stage, who knows. Anyway, thats why I did it.

So yea, Im glad we won, but it was against a terrible team, and we did what we should have done, no more no less. There is nothing like hearing the chant in person though, I still get goosebumps.

Oh, and that “stadium” is horrific, it should be torn down immediately

Final comment: anyone who was there, did they see the debacle with the UF fans? What a bunch of retards. I know they were sprinkled throughout, but there was this 3pack that were just asking for trouble. long story short, after aggravating many (sersiously, why were they there..) and about to leave, there were some people who had been itchin for a chance to cause to some ruckus. smack talk started as they were walkin down, pushin shovin, hats thrown, and then the cou’de gras, a guy comes up from behind and says here is a going away present, then pours a whole beer on the guy. He really said that, how hilarious. It got ugly quick. I hate the Gators so much it sickens me, but a small part of me felt bad. Until I remembered how there was a stupid cop who did the chomp at us when we wanted them kicked out. I half expected it though, he looked like a stupid gator.

Anyway, those are my thoughts. It was a sloppy game against one not great team, and one terrible team. Wisconsin fans were cool though.

sorry

dont expect anyone to read all that, didnt know how long it was…yikes.

by Miaminole on Dec 30, 2008 12:46 PM EST up reply actions

No problem. I thought it was a fine read.

Tomahawk Nation seems fine with some “small talk” mixed in among the hardcore X’s and O’s, and I certainly contribute my fair share:

I didn’t like the playcalling in the first half either, but I had to concede that when you don’t block you can’t run anything effectively. I also hate that our fanbase is the laziest in America and not only that but downright rude about it. “Siddown!!” And to any youngsters who wonder about the glory years – nah, we never stood up for anyone but Florida and Miami back in the good ol’ days either. We’ve been spoiled for a very long time.

Good job getting Gano the early pub for the MVP trophy. I was wondering at the game if the big shots would notice that he won the game for us with the coffin-corner kicks. He was the lone bright spot of the first half. The reason I referenced Holly Rowe in my post was that I assumed (incorrectly?) that her interview with Gano made TV at some point. For someone who herself is both wide right and wide left, you’d think she could congratulate Gano on his success without giving FSU a back-handed compliment about its history of missed field goals. And I’m sure she was just trying to get in a good-natured rib at Gano about the roughing-the-kicker penalty, but as Graham illustrated, fat girls never get the benefit of the doubt.

P.S. I was on the other side of the stadium, above the Marching Chiefs, which means the “Bobby” chant was everywhere. I’m over it, really.

by TRMNole on Dec 30, 2008 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

yep

I disagree with the play calling being bad. When you have no OL play, nothing works is the bottom line.

by Cee on Jan 1, 2009 6:29 PM EST up reply actions

Fight in the restroom

after the game. As you would expect a Gator was running his mouth and one thing lead to another and he and an FSU fan got into it. Why I even mention this is that as the fight expanded from two to four to six guys and the only UF fan fighting was the guy that started it. FSU fans were actually fighting each other. I was stunned…I am guessing the gator must have had family with him that are noles but anyway, wow.
As to the other UF fans there, yeah there was more than a few. I realize most noles are pulling for Oklahoma in the big game but I do not imagine many of us would actually travel to the game to root against UF. Sad, very sad.

by CFCNole on Dec 30, 2008 9:46 PM EST up reply actions

And if they did, surely they wouldn't arrive decked out in garnet and gold from head to toe.

You get what you ask for. I’m pretty sure it’s only Gator fans that do this. And I know this isn’t a Gator bashing site – there are plenty of those out there – but since there were several incidents at the game, I think it’s fair to bring this up. What is so difficult, if you must attend a rival’s game, about putting on a neutral polo shirt (borrow one from a friend), a pair of khaki shorts (borrow one from a friend), and quietly enjoying watching your rival succeed at beating an overmatched opponent, while still having the luxury of knowing in your heart that you beat said rival on their field by 30. Heck, I’d be pretty happy with that myself. Instead they choose to look like fools in public, be belittled by thousands of people who know they’re better than them, and be reminded by loud, angry voices that no matter how much success their school is currently having, the girl’s school did it all first, and their school still hasn’t even gone undefeated. To each their own, I guess.

by TRMNole on Dec 31, 2008 8:55 AM EST up reply actions

good post.

WI is not a good team and they play in a bad conference. I didn’t think FSU played very well and when we do play good teams (like UF) we get killed. The mediocrity in Tally has gone on for far to long. I DO beleive that being subjected to constant mediocrity (like playing in the ACC) takes a toll on our program.

Still, it was very nice to see a post season blow out. Bowden proclaimed it a trip down memory lane – “we look like the Noles of old”. Not so fast there Bobby – there’s still a long way to go.

Completely off topic here

I’m reading an article about Nix being fired at UM. Shannon hasn’t said but Nix mentioned that he wanted to run something more wide-open and go no huddle but Shannon had a different philosophy..

“I enjoyed it here. I appreciated Randy giving me the opportunity,” Nix said. “I’d like to have gone with something more wide-open and more no-huddle. He and I had a philosophical difference on that.”

Found here

I wouldn’t be shocked to see Nix do well elsewhere under a coach that will let him implement what he wants.

I don’t understand this and you see it all the time (both in the NFL and college). Coaches, ADs, and GMs constantly hire people on that have differing philosophies concerning their chosen area of the field. Auburn did it with Franklin and now UM apparently did it with Nix. Do the coaches, ADs, and GMs just no pay attention in interviews and do no research?

Soon FSU will be hiring a new OC and DC and it should be kept in mind that the "hot" coordinator isn’t necessarily the best one for the job for a multiple number of reasons, one of the most important being lack of agreement on operations.

(Like I said, this is off topic but I find it to be an interesting and vastly under-reported subject in college football both in hiring coaches and bringing in recruits.)

by evenflow58 on Dec 30, 2008 9:53 AM EST reply actions

I don’t know that you can use his tenure in Miami as a barometer for Nix’s ability as a coach of any kind. It’s tough to succeed with one hand behind your back.

Good News

I have some very good news for you, the number 10 team in the nation, Ohio State managed a 3 point win over Wisconsin. Penn State #6 managed to beat Ohio State by 7 points. Try and find some solace in that FSU performs better than what the pollsters consider some of the best teams in the land.

This per ESPN, so all in all we must be awaiting a correction in the polls and FSU will move to #9 in the nation.

Yes I am being sarcastic but you have to admit the polls this year are some sort of meaningless joke. Georgia Tech sits at #14, a team which FSU defeated with exception that Marcus Sims was not on board with it. I said a year and a half ago that the football seems like a greased bowling ball to him. He is a fumbler and why Jimbo called his number on that play is beyond me.

It is hard for me to believe FSU would handily beat the bottom 5 teams in the top five, Mizzou, Oregon, Ball State, Northwestern and #20 Virginia Tech….oh wait we already defeated Virginia Tech.

I have come to the conclusion the pollsters are either some of the dumbest SOBs on the planet or that despise Florida State and revel in us being down. On second thought it is probably both.

We have to win more than 9 games with the talent we have to be ranked consistently.

Conversely, the minute we return to 10-win status, we’re a consistent top-15 team with the schedules we play.

GTech killed us. The game was only close because their QB got injured. You can say injuries are part of the game but so are fumbles. I don’t see any reason why FSU would beat those teams you listed on a neutral field. It doesn’t matter if we could beat them anyways. They proved to be the better teams all season.

We lose by three scores at least if the GT QB does not get hurt. Our defense had no answer to the Triple Option. They would still be running on us now…..
Most of the people that think we should have beat GT also believe that FSU is a Tebow away from being competitive with UF.

Of course we had more first downs. When you’re getting 60 yard TDs on fullback dives there’s really no need to move the chains.
