Drive Log Review: UTC (Finally Finished @ 9PM Eastern!)

I am probably not going to review each play this week, since most of us want to move on and focus on Wake.  FSU is the only D1 team that has yet to play a D1 school, and I know we're all excited about the prospects of a challenging game.

I'll have a decent bit of stuff up tonight, and I'll be doing a Radio Appearance (details to come).  For now, enjoy this Drive Chart...

The DriveLog Follows...

Here are some preliminary statistical thoughts:

• FSU had 13 possessions in this contest.  Folks, we are seeing these new clock rules take effect.  I really doubt we get more than 11 Possessions against Wake.
• FSU had 19 Carries by running backs.  17 gained 2 or more yards (89%), 14 gained 3 or more yards (74%).  These numbers seem good, but against a team like UTC, they really highlight the deficiencies of our offensive line.  When we really need to gain two yards, against a team with a legitimate Nose Tackle, will they be able to do it?  At this point, these guys are not strong enough to do that.  We will have to be creative.  That Burden falls squarely on the coaching staff.
  

So, here we go...  It's DriveLog Time!

1. A kickoff to the 16?  I am not amused.  There isn't much reason to hope for better until Gano returns.
   
2. Moses McCray is an absolute beast as a freshman.  He tallied 3 tackles on this drive and shows great balance; just what we expect from a former top-notch wrestler.  Don't be surprised if he and Budd Thacker get the start against Wake.
3. A 24 yard punt is horrendous.  I'm sure that UTC would claim this was a directional kick, aimed to eliminate any return by the 'Noles.

• Despite the screen pass, this drive looked pretty crisp.  I like Easterling's explosiveness.  I know Bert Reed is faster, but Easterling seems to have better burst, and he is definitely stronger. 
  
• It was so refreshing to see an FSU QB put a deep ball on the receiver's correct shoulder.  Ponder looked good on this drive. 
  
• Surrency is the best player on this team.  This statement is bold, I know.  Apologies to Everette Brown, but Surrency clearly stands out on the field.  He has great body control, uses his hands very well, and made a nice catch here for the TD.

• Everette Brown shows great burst as he drops Pastore for a loss of 13. 
  
• UTC gave us great field position all day with their horrendus punting.  28 yards... really?

• Welcome back Antone!  Deuce looked more explosive in this game than he did against WCU.
• I'm glad to see Ponder throwing a variety oif routes.  He is accurate on outside stuff and his only miss of the drive was a flag to Easterling.
• The offensive line looked good here as Smith burst up the middle for the TD.  I'm glad to see our guys use their quickness to gain position.

• No Comment
• Comment:  Tony Carter was the corner victimized here, if I remember correctly.
  
• Also on the scoring play was a Holding call on our free safety (not sure who it was)

• 2 Plays, 59 yards, score.  I like that.
• The scoring play was a beautiful fake.  Ponder pumped the bubble, then hit Surrency in stride. 
  
• It seems Jimbo rewards those who block by calling big plays for them in the next week.
• Ponder started off 7-8.  If he starts 7-8 against Wake, we will roll.
  

• The big pass here was a screen.  Mickey's defense is always susceptible to screens, and this was a good play by UTC.
• Derek Nicholson had 2 tackles on this drive.
• Is it blashphemous to say I'll take this year's linebackers over last year's?  Seriously, these guys wrap up MUCH better and appear to be more disciplined. 
  

• This drive had sloppiness, lack of foocus and laziness written all over it.  The linemen didn't move their feet very wekk and looked slow.  Rod Owens got a nice gain by Jarmon fortson called back with an illegal block.  Then Owens, probably still thinking about the penalty, dropped a short route along the sideline.  That stuff cannot happen against Wake. 
  
• Antone still gets tripped up way too easily. 
  
• Zach Hobby, please make your field goals.

• Two big sacks for Everette Brown in this game.  
• Our Defensive ends were playing head up on the tackle, even on the strong side (TE).  This is presumably to help out our defensive tackles, and really makes the 2 sacks by EB even more impressive. 
  
• Moses McCray continues to impress with excellent penetration. 
  

• I will again voice my concerns over using our starting QB on draws against garbage opponents.
• The 2nd and 10 was an OPTION look.  Wake Forest, do you have enough to think about now?
• Easterling's Drop was the second of the game for the 'Nole wide receiving corps.  Ponder was playing a great game and those drops sort of cloud the story.  He played better in game #2 than game #1, despite worse numbers.
• I am not sure why, but this series looked out of sync.  The offensive line's blocking wasn't spectacular, and we suffered a loss on 2nd and 10 as Antone was stopped for -3.  Trickett will probably kindly remind them of the importance of bringing consistent intensity. 
  
• Smith showed his versatility as he took the swing pass and beat his man to the corner.

• Kenny Ingram delivered a crushing blow to force the fumble.  I'm encouraged by his play early in the season.
• What if we utilized Kenny (6'5") as a front-side pass rusher?  He's difficult to throw over and would definitely screw with the opposing QB's throwing angles. 
  

• Maybe the offensive line just doesn't like the 2nd quarter?  I wasn't impressed with our tackle play and wonder if there won't be a change forthcoming.  We produced 2 failure plays (Thomas loss of 2, and Ponder Sacked for a loss of 6)
• Ponder hasn't yet thrown a flag route well (Corner type).  Maybe this is a weakness of his, or maybe it is a limited sample set.  I'm not willing to yet make that judgment.  
• Hobby makes the field goal that he should make. 
  

• Easterling should handle punt and kickoff return duties. 
  
• Rod Owens didn't have a great game today. 
  
• This was a nice punt.  I'll discuss punting in-depth (yay) in a later article.

• Moses McCray owned this series as he blew up his man on the first play to completely set the tone.
• Markus white continued to show why he is one f our better defenders.  The guy has a crazy motor.  It's like Mike Vrabel of Grant Winstrom.
• I'm not really impressed by the punt block.  It's nice, but victimizing the special teams of an overwhelmed squad isn't really all that impressive.

• This game should put all of the D'Vo lovers to rest.  He didn't look nearly as comfortable today..  Hopefully this is because we were preparing for Wake Forest.
• Fortson dropped the 2nd down pass (Drop #3 for the 'Noles, if you're coutning, and I am).
