The big writeup is still coming, but I'm not going to post it in pieces.

Let's look at some user comments.

A lot of users launched  full-scale indictments of the offensive coaching staff, questioning their qualifications and their job security.

cfsu89q felt sorry for Bowden:

It’s time for coach Fisher to start getting the job done here. This is no one’s fault but his. I feel very sorry for the position that coach Bowden is in right now.

Honestly, if you want to blame a coach, blame Bowden.  Call him out for the ridiculous continued ramifications from his foolish, selfish decision to hire his son.  Take him to task for allowing what was the best program in America entering this decade, to fall so far.  Criticize him for not being involved in the program.  Bowden is a negative for the program now.  He can't be taken seriously.  Just because your record as a coach is one of the best coaches ever, doesn't mean that you are immune from criticism.  It is depressing that we are still trying to dig out of his mess.

As for the qualifications of the coaches, Trickett has consistently produced good offensive lines and has an excellent reputation in the industry.  Several commentators noted that Saban wanted Fisher for 700K/ year.

I really can't blame Trickett for anything.  His guys aren't ready yet, and he doesn't have the benefit of time.  The guys we had playing offensive line last year were garbage.  Fans must remember that we are building for the future.  From what I saw, we will have a good offensive line soon, probably next year.

Fisher deserves more blame.  I'll discuss this in the report card, but I didn't like the game plan.  There were several things he could have done better, and I'll talk about those.

As for the QB's... after the jump.

Star-divide

Under Calvinandhopps had a decent take on the QB situation

was disappointed with game as well, but i did find some reasons to hope for more success latter in the season. Devo Richardson showed some glimpses of extraordinary athleticism. I think he brought an extra demension to the FSU offense, and frequently kept the defense on their toes.

The verdict is still out on Ponder. He started out so nervous and never seemed to find a good rhythm. Regrettably, there is only one way to get game day experience and that is…to play on game day. Hopefully they can continue to develop him into a good back up or starting quarterback.

The briggest bright spot of the game was that we were able to generate offense against one the best ACC teams. The simple task to work on going forward is reducing turnovers and minimalizing turnovers. Those things are a lot easier to work on than being faster or stronger.

Personally, I think this is spot on.  These penalties won't go away completely, but they should decrease some.  Surrency will learn what is and is not a legal block.

cfsu89q wrote

He clearly lacks the ability to evaluate the readiness of his players in that, for some reason unrecognizable to me, he chose to place two totally inexperience quaterbacks ahead of Drew Weaterford on the depth chart. It should have been quite apparent in practice which QB gives us the best chance to win. Trust me, I am by no means a Drew Weatherford fan, but has Weatherford ever player a game anywhere close to as poorly as the two that played last night? I think not.

I think he missed it here.  Weatherford would be eaten alive behind this young line.  He failed FSU for three years, and is not a legitimate option with this set of personnel.  Ponder & D'Vo's running accounted for 62% of FSU's total yards

User Andy_wooster is a consistent contributor to Tomahawk Nation.  He also went with the reserved approach.

 2. The offense cannot perform worse than they did. 7 turnovers and a crapload of penalties? It was the perfect storm of offensive incompetency. There’s nowhere to go but up. That may seem obvious, but my belief is that we won’t see an offensive performance anywhere near as bad again this year (and hopefully ever).

  3. The offensive line is super young. Barring injuries, this group could be together for the next three seasons (including this one). Trickett has an excellent track record, and I expect this group to steadily improve over the course of the season.

Things look incredibly ugly right now, but the ship will begin to be righted with a victory over Colorado next week. All I ask is that the offense show a little progress in Jacksonville.

I'm not drinking the koolaid when I say I agree.  Chances are that the qb's won't throw more than 3 interceptions again this season.

Several commentators, including beanballhall were livid about penalties.  Rightfully so.

killed any chance of FSU getting an opportunity to win the game last night.  The team appears to play with no discipline.  Yes, I understand that we are missing several key starters, but come on...FSU has been playing this kind of football for several years.

The penalties were ridiculous.  The worst two were the Personal Fouls by upperclassmen Parker and Rolle.

I will say that Surrency's two penalties aren't likely to occur again.  The coaches will instruct him on the legalities of blocking.  Markus White's "facemask" was a blown call by Jack Childress, who seemed to be a little flag happy on the night.

Offensive penalties wiped out four first downs and cost the 'Noles 91 yards (31 yards of gain erased, 60 penalty yards, for a total of 91).  More costly, however, was the ridiculous position that the penalties left the offense in.

The 'Noles were in bad spots all night, which limited the available play calls and destroyed the offensive rythm.

Finally, user turftoe took the receivers to task, rightfully so

The recievers are highly talented but can some one get open? It seemed like every reciever had a man right on him.

He is spot on with this.  The WR core was supposed to lead this offense, yet they were lackadaisical, ran consistently lazy routes, and committed stupid penalties.  Preston Parker is probably the goat of this game.  I'll give Surrency a bit of a pass.  He obviously didn't know the illegality of his actions.

I had to take a couple of days to calm down...

it was just such a disappointment to sit there and watch that mess on Saturday. I was prepared for us to get beat…Grobe is a hell of a coach and Wake is a good team. But the way we got beat, well, I just wasn’t prepared for that at all. I thought we would put up points and our defense would be the side that would struggle. Man, I couldn’t have been more wrong. But here’s what I came away with:

1. We aren’t ready…and by that I mean, we are just too early in the stage of transition to become what everyone of us reading this wants us to become. Playing these FCS teams helped FSU to get on the field and put things together, but it didn’t prepare us for anything. And that’s kind of scary.

2. QB – I think that it’s very tough to take anything away from that game regarding our QB situation. D’Vo looked good running the ball, but calling a keeper every other play is not a way to win. Ponder, I’m sure it was nerves. I think the difference between this game and the VT game last year is that this past game he had all week to think about making his debut in a prime time game on ESPN2. Last year, he got thrown into the mix because there were no other options, so he just had to go out and play. I don’t think there is a QB on our roster that would’ve been more prepared. We came out nervous and excited, made mistakes, and then got into a situation where people were trying too hard to make plays. D’Vo did better at the beginning, throwing the ball away when he should instead of forcing a throw downfield. There are little things to build on.

3. O-Line: It’s a young, piecemeal offensive line. I really don’t know what else to say. Until they are older/stronger/smarter/better, we’re not going to have a running game and our QBs will be running for their lives. At least they can run a little this year.

4. Defense: I know that they held WF out of the end zone, but they gave up a lot of yards doing it. The score could’ve (should’ve?) been much worse, but Swank missed a surprising amount of field goals. Our secondary is questionable and getting Patrick Robinson back will help. Our d-line and linebackers do look pretty decent though.

5. Penalties – We gave Wake so many chances because of our stupid mistakes. I don’t think I can properly address this without getting angry.

6. Special teams – This is really the only part of the game I was happy with. I know Gano missed that first field goal, but it was his first kick in a game situation after coming off of injury.

7. The crowd – This was the most consistently loud crowd at Doak that I’ve witnessed since maybe the 2005 FSU-Miami game (10-7). The students were in it from the beginning to the end, even though it was evident the game was pretty much done. I was impressed!

Ultimately, I don’t think that we really learned anything from this week except that it’s probably going to be a long season with maybe some high points, and definitely some lows. Any way you cut it, if we aren’t prepared for the Buffs this weekend, it’s gonna get extremely nerve wracking really quickly.

In defense of the officials

I thought it was a well called game overall. FSU was boneheaded in a lot of areas. The face mask was bad, yes, but overall they were pretty good about balancing play vs penalty.

I agree..

I don’t really think it was called that poorly…I think people were just reacting out of frustration. Most of it was poor/lazy execution.

Allow me to clarify

I meant that committing that many penalties was ridiculous. The calls weren’t phantom, for the most part.

ok

First ill say that i lived in Tally for 6 years, I attended Lincoln High and played with Cro Thorpe and Cromartie. Many of my best friends are FSU fans. I say that so you don’t think im some dumb alabama fan throwing his two cents in BUT!!

I keep hearing about rebuilding, building for the future, we are so young…

The question is why?

Alabama is just as young as a Miami or FSU and we aren’t struggling right now…why are you? Hell FSU used to win on talent alone, forget the coaches. IMO Bobby just seems lost and like Fulmer at UT, the game has passed him by. What sucks is that i see probation on the horizon for FSU and whether or not that happens, the talk of it will keep 5 star guys away. This is coming from a Bama fan and i think i know something about how probation talk hurts recruiting.

Im rambling now but i feel FSU fans should be asking more questions about why and how they got to their current situation. Because they really have no excuse.

Bobby screwed this program

with a selfish decision. There, I said it.

We could be in for a situation that could kill the program for a long time.

Perhaps

Bama has been on probation twice in 20 years and we are still kicking. It really has to do with the fans. If the fans stick with the team through everything, FSU will pull through. During the terrible years Alabama has gone through, there was still sell outs and fan support. If you guys get frustrated and don’t show up to games and support the team, the TEAM might never recover.

You mean hiring Jeff?

If so, I agree 100%.

That decision was inexcusable.

Yes,

You would have to try pretty hard to find a program that was brought down so badly as the result of an assistant hire.
