The Play-by-Play Review (2Q)

Here is the second quarter.  I ripped into Jimbo pretty hard at the end of this one.

Wake Forest at 14:45 WFU FSU
1st and 10 at WFU 45 Riley Skinner pass complete to Devon Brown for 20 yards to the FlaSt 35 for a 1ST down. 3 0
I didn't note this, but a 20 yard crossing route?  Man coverage anyone?
1st and 10 at FSU 35 Wake Forest penalty 5 yard false start accepted.
1st and 15 at FSU 40 Brandon Pendergrass rush for a loss of 2 yards to the FlaSt 42.
I thought Jamie Robinson played a great game.  He helped out in run support, assisting on the tackle for loss.  The speed of this defense is impressive.
2nd and 17 at FSU 42 Riley Skinner sacked by Kendall Smith for a loss of 6 yards, fumbled, recovered by FlaSt Tony Carter at the FlaSt 48, Florida St penalty 15 yard personal foul accepted.
This was a really good job of not quitting on the pass rush.  That said, Kevin McNeil FALL ON THE DAMN BALL!  He fubbed it 2-3 times as he attempted to run with the ball.
DRIVE TOTALS: WFrst drive: 3 plays 7 yards, 01:51 WFrst FUMB
Did anyone see the personal foul Everette Brown committed?  I didn't catch it.  Unacceptable from an important defensive leader, however.
Florida State at 12:54 WFU FSU
1st and 10 at FSU 33 Florida St penalty 15 yard illegal block accepted, no play. 3 0
The PBP doesn't tell the story here.  We ran a beautiful fake bubble screen, QB draw.  This was an excellent call by Jimbo.  Surrency executed a dangerous illegal block here, and I can only assume that he doesn't know the rules at this point.  Expect that to change as he goes along.
1st and 25 at FSU 18 Christian Ponder rush for 4 yards to the FlaSt 22.
2nd and 21 at FSU 22 Christian Ponder pass complete to Preston Parker for 11 yards to the FlaSt 33.
This is a throw that Drew couldn't make consistently enough: The 10+ yard out.  I didn't love this throw, but it did get there.
The line pointed out their assignments here, and then blocked well.  It looked like a high school move, but was really effective.
Preston pulled a chickenshit move here, as he shucked the DB in the facemask after the play.  This was blatant, and shockingly wasn't called.  Unacceptable from a guy who just got busted with Weed and a Pistol.  I'm glad the new haircut is changing his image, because his on field antics certainly aren't.  If he keeps this up, he'll need to learn how to deal dope better, because that stuff won't fly in the NFL.  Parker played hard tonight, but he played "me ball", or street ball.  Playing within the scheme and within himself would have been better.  He'll have something to prove this week.
3rd and 10 at FSU 33 Christian Ponder pass complete to Greg Carr for 10 yards to the FlaSt 43 for a 1ST down.
Ponder converts another 3rd down, this time on 3rd and 10, as he drills the deep comeback to Carr.  This is an example of a throw we couldn't execute last year.  I thought Ponder played very well on this drive.
1st and 10 at FSU 43 Antone Smith rush for 2 yards to the FlaSt 45.
In a rare play that the offense blocked well, Antone missed the hole.  He needed to bounce this to the outside as we had a great seal!  Such was this game.
2nd and 8 at FSU 45 Christian Ponder pass incomplete to Bert Reed.
We had an interesting 4-wide bunch formation on this play.  I liked the look.
Wake brought a big zone blitz here, but I am concerned with the blocking here.  For whatever reason, the entire line slid the protection to the right.  Ponder didn't follow.  I'm not sure who this is on, but when the line slides and the QB doesn't… results predictable
A major criticism of Ponder was his tendency to lock on to wideouts.  A Tomahawk Nation poster pointed that out, and he was absolutely right.  Ponder didn't see Antone open in the left flat, again.  I also think his drop on this play was too large.  Count the steps!  It was a nine-step drop!
3rd and 8 at FSU 45 Christian Ponder rush for 18 yards to the WFrst 37 for a 1ST down.
Ponder is a special athlete from the quarterback position, but his dive at the end of this play was idiotic.  Can someone teach this kid how to slide?  He already had the first down.  This leads me to believe that he was too jacked up for this game and tried too hard.
1st and 10 at WFU 37 Christian Ponder pass incomplete.
Josh Dobbie really sucks.  I can't even comprehend why we would play any freshman TE when Dobbie is the best we have (Little, whom Dobbie starts over.)  Jimbo, please stop putting bad players on the field.  Stick with the spread look, and ditch this Two Tight look.
Ponder overthrew this ball pretty poorly, and Little was covered.  He didn't run a good route either.
Ponder again had Antone open on this play.  Smith is a damn fine pass catcher and whoever plays qb for the 'Noles needs to find him so he can work his magic in space.
2nd and 10 at WFU 37 Bert Reed rush for 8 yards to the WFrst 29.
Loved this call!  Bring in D'Vo to run a QB-WR reverse!  This is the type of creativity we want to see!
3rd and 2 at WFU 29 Florida St penalty 5 yard false start on Antwane Greenlee accepted.
We were in the 4WR bunch formation again.  Greenlee committed another error in a game that he would soon like to forget.
3rd and 7 at WFU 34 Christian Ponder pass complete to Seddrick Holloway for 1 yard to the WFrst 33.
Ponder had to re-set his feet b/c of a huge blitz.  The wideout here did not correctly cut his route off, and as a result, Ponder didn't have a "hot."  This is on the WR, not Christian.
4th and 6 at WFU 33 Timeout FLORIDA ST, clock 07:24.
4th and 6 at WFU 33 Graham Gano 52 yard field goal MISSED.
DRIVE TOTALS: FlaSt drive: 10 plays 34 yards, 05:38 FlaSt FGA
Ugh.  A 52-yard field goal try with a kicker who is coming off an injury?  Questionable at best.  The right call here is to GO FOR THE FIRST DOWN.  Read the damn study, coaches!  In the alternative, a punt could also work here, as the defense was dominating at this point.
Wake Forest at 7:16 WFU FSU
1st and 10 at WFU 34 Riley Skinner pass complete to Ben Wooster for 11 yards to the WFrst 45 for a 1ST down. 3 0
Ben Lampkin is HORRIBLE.  He got dominated on this play, as he did almost every play.  I really hope we don't give other walk-ons scholarships for their effort, if they don't have actual talent.  Ridiculous.  He let Skinner roll out here to make the throw.  This play is on him.  The defense can't cover forever.
Everette Brown was mugged on this play.  Horrible No-Call.  The OT also cheap shotted him.
Nicholson played a really good game tonight, but he had a BAD drop here, as he only got 2-3 yards deep.
This was a really good throw by Skinner.
1st and 10 at WFU 45 Pass to TE in flat
At this point, we began to blitz like crazy.  This really annoyed me.  The line was doing a decent job getting pressure when Lampkin wasn't playing.  The solution, to me, was to remove Lampkin, not blitz more.  Anyways, we had trouble man-covering when we did blitz.  Skinner hit his TE safety valve in the flat.
1st and 10 at FSU 44 Riley Skinner pass complete to Josh Adams for 15 yards to the FlaSt 29 for a 1ST down.
Mickey was blitz happy at this point.  I think Verdell misread the PA here, but in any case, we were doing a poor job of missing man and zone on this drive.
Wake went unbalanced line several times this drive.  Wake dominated Lampkin with a  backup TE, and used two OT's on Everette Brown.
Wake also started going no-huddle here, something we will need to watch out for against Colorado.
1st and 10 at FSU 29 Josh Adams rush for 5 yards to the FlaSt 24.
Lampkin was dominated as the Wake blocked blew him 5 yards off the ball.  He made the tackle 5 yards downfield.
Kenny Ingram played a good game but was pancaked on this play.
2nd and 5 at FSU 24 Josh Adams rush for 5 yards to the FlaSt 19 for a 1ST down.
Nicholson overran this play, and was then held by the blocker.  Not a horrible missed call.
1st and 10 at FSU 19 Riley Skinner pass complete to D.J. Boldin for 2 yards to the FlaSt 17.
Verdell did a great job sniffing out this WR screen.  Verdell's instincts as a former DB shower up again.
2nd and 8 at FSU 17 Josh Adams rush for no gain to the FlaSt 17.
In a drive that was mostly about redemption, Nicholson stuffed Adams for no gain.  Credit the DT's here for stonewalling their blockers.  Nice job.
3rd and 8 at FSU 17 Riley Skinner pass complete to Ben Wooster for 7 yards to the FlaSt 10.
FSU blitzed 6.  Nice job by the safety to stick with the TE.
4th and 1 at FSU 10 Timeout WAKE FOREST, clock 03:53.
4th and 1 at FSU 10 Riley Skinner pass incomplete, broken up by Kenny Ingram.
Ingram is 6'6" and he did a great job of getting his hands up to bat this back in Skinner's face!
DRIVE TOTALS: WFrst drive: 9 plays 56 yards, 03:28 WFrst DOWNS
Florida State at 3:48 WFU FSU
1st and 10 at FSU 11 Antone Smith rush for 2 yards to the FlaSt 13. 3 0
2nd and 8 at FSU 13 Christian Ponder pass incomplete to Corey Surrency.
Bad throw, into double coverage.  He dipped his shoulders way too much on this.  Poorly thrown deep ball.
3rd and 8 at FSU 13 Christian Ponder pass complete to Preston Parker for 16 yards to the FlaSt 29 for a 1ST down.
Ponder follows up a bad pass with a GREAT throw.  This is why he is the starter.  The consistency should come, but the ability is there.  A 16 yard square in thrown into zone coverage is a difficult pass, but CP7 nailed it.
1st and 10 at FSU 29 Antone Smith rush for 6 yards to the FlaSt 29, Florida St penalty 15 yard illegal block accepted.
This is something that will be corrected this week, as Surrency committed his 2nd illegal chop.
Antone looked GREAT on this run.
1st and 19 at FSU 20 Antone Smith rush for 1 yard to the FlaSt 21.
Jimbo handled the final three plays like an idiot.  With two minutes left, on 1st and 19, he dials up a run between the tackles.  That's fine, I thought he was going to run out the clock.  The team had NO sense of urgency at this point.  What transpired next is inexcusable, and definitely on Fisher.
2nd and 18 at FSU 21 Christian Ponder pass incomplete to Preston Parker.
On 2nd down, Parker is mauled by CB A. Smith, and the refs don't call pass interference.  At this point, I am wondering why we didn't run on 2nd and 18 with under 2 minutes, but I wasn't that worried, as I KNEW that Fisher would call a conservative run to drain clock or make Wake waste a T.O., before we punted...
Bobby looks a little silly wearing the headsets as the announcers tell a National audience that he isn't involved in game planning or play calling.
3rd and 18 at FSU 21 Christian Ponder pass intercepted by Kevin Patterson at the FlaSt 49, returned for 32 yards to the FlaSt 17.
This was GARBAGE on the part of Fisher.  I thought he called an average game, balancing good with bad.  This was the bad.  To put a first-year starting QB in a position where he has to make an 18 yard throw, with 2:38 on the clock, from his own 21, with a horrendously young OLine, against an ultra veteran defense, is just not acceptable!
Ponder didn't make a good read here, but he didn't have much to work with.  The ball was late and should not have been thrown.
Fisher's comment  about this sequence was "And I take blame for that a little bit myself because I put him in a situation probably on third-and-18, we were trying to make some thing happen. Probably should have just ran the ball and went on. That's partly my fault too. That's one I wish I would have had back."  Puh-lease.  A little bit on yourself?  This is solely on your shoulders.  Jimbo, I'm a huge fan, but when you skirt your responsibilities, you sound like the delusional Bowden during the nepotism years.  A coach shouldn't blame a player when the coach put the player in a bad spot.
DRIVE TOTALS: FlaSt drive: 7 plays 10 yards, 02:38 FlaSt INT
Wake Forest at 1:10 WFU FSU
1st and 10 at FSU 17 Josh Adams rush for 4 yards to the FlaSt 13. 3 0
2nd and 6 at FSU 13 Riley Skinner rush for 11 yards, fumbled, recovered by FlaSt Jamie Robinson at the FlaSt 2.
Wow, Jimbo's bonehead decision is topped only by Skinner forgetting to switch the ball to his outside hand.
DRIVE TOTALS: WFrst drive: 2 plays 15 yards, 00:41 WFrst FUMB
Florida State at 0:29 WFU FSU
1st and 10 at FSU 2 Christian Ponder rush for 1 yard to the FlaSt 3. 3 0
2nd and 9 at FSU 3 Timeout WAKE FOREST, clock 00:15.
2nd and 9 at FSU 3 Christian Ponder rush for 1 yard to the FlaSt 4.
