Final CBS Sports Blogpoll

This is the final.  I welcome your thoughts.

We play NC State tonight at 7ET (hoops)

Jamey Givens lets you know whether Trickett interviewed with Illinois and speculates on their chances of signing him if he does/ has interviewed.  That's a $ link.  I usually don't link paysite articles, but they have helped us out in the past and Jamey is a good guy.  Please don't post what it says in the comments section, as that would obviously not be cool.  In a  day or two, this will be public knowledge and we'll talk about it.

Update: ESPN apparently jacked Jamey's story, which is ironic since Jamey's site is an ESPN Network: http://myespn.go.com/blogs/acc/0-3-531/Illinois-courting-FSU-s-Trickett.html (Illinois courts FSU's Trickett)

I didn't take enough time to put this together, so you have my apologies.  Here are some general thoughts on what I'd do if I could do it all over again:

  • I am not listed as one of the top five outliers for the first time in a while.  My poll is probably too generic.
  • Cal is way too low.  I have no idea what I was doing there.
  • USC over Texas on the strength of the Trojan's wins against strong performing Pac10 teams and dominating wins over the best of the Big 10.  Texas is downgraded after the Big 12 got exposed as a conference with poor defensive back play.
  • Oklahoma not dropping too much after going toe to toe with Florida.
  • Utah... congratulations, Utes.  I told you I gave no credit for the wins over the garbage teams, but I am giivng you full credit for the win over Bama-- Andre Smith or not.  For that same reason, I don't think your resume of wins is better than what USC or Texas can offer.

ACC

The ACC went 4-6 in its bown games.  The performance was much better than that record indicates, however.  I always argue that won-loss record is much too shallow a measure of performance.  Let's take a look at how Vegas expected the ACC to do... and how the ACC did.

  • Florida State was a five point favorite... and won by 29.  COVER.
  • Virginia Tech was a two point underdog... and won by 13.  COVER
  • Wake Forest was a three point favorite and won by 10.  COVER.
  • Maryland wa sa two point underdog... and won by 7.  COVER
  • Miami was a 9 point underdog and lost by 7.  COVER.  Miami lost a cross country road game to a very good Cal team while having to play with their backup QB.
  • North Carolina was a two point underdog and lost by one.  COVER
  • North Carolina State was a seven point underdog, led at half, lost their starting QB,... and lost by 6.  COVER.
  • Boston College lost a road game (Vandy in Nashville) while using their backup QB, and getting hozed by an atrocious call late in the game.
  • Clemson was a field goal favorite (did not sell out the Gator Bowl), and lost by five.
  • Georgia Tech embarrassed the conference, as the four point favorite lost by 35.
  • The ACC exceeded expectations (covered) in 7 of 10 games.
  • 3 of the ACC's 6 losses involved an injury to the starting quarterback.
  • Texas Tech had two losses to very good teams and blew out quite a few others.
  • Ole Miss.... told ya guys.

People will continue to rip this conference, but it will continue to play well against other conferences.

I disagree with your thinking based on the point spread. Point spreads are made by betters to balance the betting not show who is the better team. I do agree that the conference is better than people give it credit for I just don’t agree with your bowl stats (the link is much better IMO).

This is what people are told but in practice that’s not really how it’s done. Sure, at its core, the idea is for vegas to protect itself, minimize exposure, max the vig, etc. Vegas sets traps all the time, however, and you usually don’t see the worse team favored by a field goal or more (counting HFA, etc).

And another thing....

Found this article by Greg Stoda about the state of FSU and UM and how that relates to UF. It really doesn’t say much in the way of facts and stats but at least it paints the picture in a realistic light. I just wish he put in an opinion that things are not likely to change for a while.

Goof find, EF58

Definitely want to know the answers to these questions

When, then, do Florida vs. Florida State and Florida vs. Miami get interesting again? When do those rivalries become good ol’ days competitive and relevant? How much longer do we have to settle for Miami vs. Florida State as an annual installment of a regular-season Also-Ran Bowl?

by Bud Elliott on Jan 13, 2009 11:26 AM EST up reply actions

I have to give it to you...

you stuck with USC the whole way while I continually knocked on them. I thought that Oregon State loss was terrible for their ‘resume’ but it ended up not looking terrible (though they way their defense played, did raise questions. How do you get pounded on the run, by a guy who can’t ride rollercoasters because of his size.

I think Pitt should be higher than us, though their Bowling Green loss doesn’t help that argument. OK St. Had a great season. I also think if this were a power poll Ole Miss would be ahead of the big ten teams, but it’s not, and they have 4 losses to mediocre-good teams.

Your top 10 is as right/accurate as it has been the whole season.

by UNFNOLE on Jan 13, 2009 11:27 AM EST reply actions

Thanks, UNF.

I’ll admit I am somewhat bias towards what I perceive as talent, and that probably slanted my pro pac-10 judgment some this year.

I think we have better wins than Pitt, and their losses, while fewer, are probably worse.

The Vandy and Wake losses really hurt Ole Miss.

by Bud Elliott on Jan 13, 2009 1:26 PM EST up reply actions

Winning is king as time continues and the memories of close games and gross mistakes (fumbles, whatever) are forgotten. IMO

I think your right that a W/L record is shallow. I also would make the arguement that almost any number or record is meaningless unless compared to other surrounding factors.

About this trickett thing

Is he just trying to get a pay rase or a better job title. I think FSU should do what ever he wants because he is importen to us. Its not like he doesnt deserve it.

by Desman on Jan 13, 2009 2:24 PM EST reply actions

He just wants an extension.

His contract ends next year. He is getting paid a pretty penny for an offensive line coach.

by UNFNOLE on Jan 13, 2009 2:30 PM EST up reply actions

In my opinion

Trick is worth every penny. He’s probably the most important piece of the puzzle we have in place right now. Everything you do on offense starts in the trenches.

I can’t think of one good reason his contract shouldn’t be extended as far out as he requests. 3 freshmen all-americans in 2 seasons is phenominal.

FSU doesn't treat him very well

and working on this staff is really annoying as Bobby let’s his old cronies run around and be lazy.

by Bud Elliott on Jan 13, 2009 3:55 PM EST up reply actions

Why is that?

When you say “FSU doesn’t treat him very well” who exactly are we talking about?

TK? Bobby? Chuck?
All of the above?

I know Trickett is a man who expects to not be taken for granted. It seems his highly volatile work ethic is clashing with other coaches lacking the “go-getter” attitude.

I’d put $50 bucks on Trickett in a cage match with the Chest.

Pfft, I’ll put my mortgage on Trickett over most coaches.

FSU’s football program isn’t run very well. There’s diffused leadership everywhere (between TK and Spetman and also Bobby and Jimbo). There’s a lot of coaches not pulling their weight and getting rewarded for it also. Trickett feels like he has put together an impressive resume (he absolutely has) and feels like he should be treated that way. I have no problem with Spetman not working on his contract yet because his rule is that he doesn’t do that until after the bowls. However, there needs to be contact and headway made immediately.

by evenflow58 on Jan 13, 2009 4:40 PM EST up reply actions

I disagree with

Spetman on a lot of issues.

Only 6 home games.

Treating all coaches equally…

by Bud Elliott on Jan 13, 2009 5:04 PM EST up reply actions

That’s what I’m thinking also, which is smart on his agents part and is best for FSU and Trickett.

by evenflow58 on Jan 13, 2009 4:37 PM EST up reply actions

FSUncensored,

I appreciate your respect for they paysites, even if you don’t ‘get along’ with them. Not an easy thing for a competitor to do.

Only 50$? Dude would wreck Chuck. I would bet 50$ that he would put the man in Critical condition. I would put closer to everything I owned on him ‘winning’ a cage match.

I think it would be terrible to loose Trickett, but it would be salt in the wound to loose him Zookie. I am really hoping Bobby declares this his last stand. I think that is our last breath of hope to keep Trickett and Jimbo past next season. I also think this is the only other thing worth ‘hoping’ for as far as coaching goes during the offseason. I think it would give the program a clear direction, instead of being in limbo, it would help with 2010 recruiting commits to give them clarity and stability, it would put hope back in our hearts (like Obama?) and it MAY motivate the players just a little bit more. I think everyone around Bobby, while they may hope he leaves, has a GREAT deal of respect for the man. This includes the players. They want to win for themselves obviously, but also for the HC.

by UNFNOLE on Jan 13, 2009 4:26 PM EST reply actions

I agree 100%

If Bobby hangs around for 2010, we will lose Jimbo and Rick.

The very best thing that could happen for the program would be for Bobby Bowden to do the unselfish thing (for once) and give everyone a date for his retirement. I’d like to see him go out with rose petals and confetti rather than in a casket on a wheel barrel.

It’s beyond the point of being sad to see the legend slipping. It’s getting right past that annoying mark sliding down the scale into the realm of insane.

This is a very good site. I don’t see how you have that much time to do this and go to law school also.

Trickettt watching the dead weigh† with a jaundiced eye is something you kind of suspect surveying the program. Having it mentioned here just confirms my suspicions.

At this point I blame the administration for simply being too lax and caught up in records and gentility.

Thanks, Doc

It’s sad that instead of having our slacker coaches meet the standards of the overachievers, we have the opposite.
