Running Recruiting News

Since it is close to NSD, I thought this could be a place people could post recruiting tidbits they find from Wed. to Wed., instead of posting it in other threads.

I don't like to divert the subject of other threads with recruiting news.  This could solve this.  We could still have Wednesday Open Recruiting threads.

ncensored, delete this if you see fit.

Edited to get back to the rec'd fanposts.

Maybe rec'd this 4-5 times for it to stay pinned.

I figured I could get this started.

per http://www.chantrant.com/

At the beginning of the week we heard FSU was among three finalists for Cedric Wilson, a Safety/LB out of Chattahoochee County High near Columbus, GA. Intrigued by a guy who didn’t seem to be on the Noles shopping list, we did some digging.

The update: Cedric won’t be a Nole.

"FSU decided not to offer him," said Wilson’s coach, Josh Kemp. "He got the news this week. Cedric was disappointed because his heart was set on FSU. He’d cancelled some visits he probably should have taken."

That's it

He was a 2nd team juco AA this year. Anyone know what his status is? 3 years to play 2? 4 years to play 3? 3 years to play 3?

by tdchrisdavis on Jan 18, 2009 4:50 PM EST up reply actions

Here's one problem I have with taking him

If we don’t take him, our DEs next year are McNeil and White. The coaches would basically have to put McAllister at DE with this situation. If we take Pierre-Paul, now the coaches might put McAllister at DT.

With our scholarship crunch I don’t think we need a guy who is only going to play a bit, might not qualify, and might not help the team out that much anyway. I’d rather we use that ’ship on Jarvis Byrd or Phillip Thomas.

I hope the defense in a few years, say 2010, is:

DE – McAllister – soph
DT – McDaniel – soph
DT – McCray – junior
DE – White – senior
OLB – Mizell – soph
MLB – Williams – junior
OLB – Bradham – junior
CB – Reid – soph
CB – Joyner – fresh
S – Downs – soph
S – Harley/Starling/Thomas – soph

That would be sick. The only guy(s) we’d lose from that would be Markus White and maybe Bradham, maybe McCray or maybe Williams. We’d also have Kendall Smith as a key reserve.

This is what I think happens...

Reid – UF
Charles – UGA

On the night before signing day when Reid tells us he’s all UF we offer Byrd, who tells us to shut it and we were only about 6 months too late, he goes to NCSU.

Starling picks UGA and tells us the night before, we offer Thomas, who picks us.

I actually think Thomas is the only guy we get on signing day, and we sign 18 players total.

Good

Not really elated over us recruiting him.

Let’s have Trickett make these guys ALL-Americans (not frosh AA, which is largely a playing time award), and then recruit some guys with talent. Alajalijan, Nixon and Harrison were major misses I think (both went to UF this year)

by Bud Elliott on Jan 18, 2009 8:23 PM EST up reply actions

I wasn't interested in Phillips at all.

Can’t figure out why Trickett was.

Maybe he just likes making fat people exercise. He’d run out of fat people to sweat so he wanted to recruit some.

by MattDNole on Jan 18, 2009 9:24 PM EST up reply actions

good read

If this guy is for real than I think he is on the right track. With the way the body works its good to have someone who knows. It seems that Trickett is on the same page with Jimbo and his Off. He know how he wants his lineman to be. Stroud seems to be on the same page with Trickett to have the guys on the right road. Its one thing to just gain weight. I can drink beer every night before I go to sleep and put on 20lb real quick, but to gain 15lb and be less than 20% body fat wow I need this guy to help me out. Im prob. to lazy for this. Would be nice though.

We need better DE play

We had some really good talents this year, but I thought we did a poor job at the position still. We had one guy who was a pass rush threat, and our run support was pretty weak at times.

its was the front 7

If we are going to stay with the 4-3 we need to have a plan that works. We play some out there teams next year it looks like. If we play BYU,TCU, and USF we might have a hand full. I was under the idea that these teams run a fast tempo spread and TCU will do it from shotgun one play and the power I the next. If we have problems with team like GT, WF, and VT we could have even more next year with these teams.

I think that was a bad idea

If, big if Miami gets a good OC one that going to turn there offence we could have problems. I dont understand how they down there cant make something work. With the recruits they get they should be able to just beat teams with shear talent. sooner or latter they are going to get a coach that has a clue and is going to use this to there adv. and if FSU dont get there stuff together its going to be to late.

by Zach_Nole on Jan 19, 2009 10:52 PM EST up reply actions

yes but they want a way that wins games.

Sooner or latter they are going to get a guy in there that will find a way to use this talent they have in there back yard. That worries me because If they start to roll it could turn into USC of the EAST Coast. think Im crazy USC gets who ever they want from the West If Miami keeps SoFl on lockdown from everyone then its not going to matter what they run talent of the Depth chart will show and win.

So it's not worth it to go to let's say 5 of the top 100 DT recruits in the country

and offer them a chance to play early for a college like Florida State?

Our DT Depth will kill us next year if we have any injuries or academic casualties. Odell has proven he can develop DT’s….let’s get him a big body.

Here is our depth:

-McCray
-Mincey (if he doesn’t flunk)
-Thacker (if he doesn’t flunk or quit)
-McDaniel (true frosh, but probably should be over Thacker)
-Stewart (who is too small)
-McAllister (who would be an amazing DE)
-Dawkins (for emergencies, I wish he could concentrate on DE)
-Maybe this Pierre-Paul guy, who everyone is recruiting as a DE)

Its a list of the top stats on HS football 08-09 and I only see one of our recruits on there Brandon Jenkins 5th for sacks.

ok from the best teams in Fl at this moment. some of these teams we are not even trying to get anyone. To me if a team is good enough to be ranked they must have players to get them there.

TEAM/City Recruits we are after school ranking
Aquinas / Fort Lauderdale 0 1
Plant / Tampa 1 2
Seminole / Sanford 0 3
Cocoa 0 4
Lakeland 0 5
pine forest / Pensacola 0 6
Northwestern / Miami 0 7

OK Im done with this. These are the best teams in FL and we are only going after 1 of these kids. I dont know who else we tried to get but 1and its a TE that we prob wont even use that much. To me this is just wrong. Ill say this Pahokee 11#, Godby 12#, Lincone 17#, Niceville 20#, Glades Central 21# I knothese teams might not have but 5-10 Sr but these are the same teams we see year in and out and we still cant get someone in there to try. Maybe Im just wrong and have to much time at work tonight but something just seems wrong. there are 4 schools that should get these kids from these schools and only 2 of them are getting them Miami and UF.

By the way this may be old news but one of the ESPN guys mentioned during a game, I forget which one that freshman guard Louck will be a walkon quarterback at FSU this spring. If I recall he was a three or four star quarterback and was fairly decent.

by DocHoliday2 on Jan 20, 2009 10:31 PM EST reply actions

Wait what?

I didn’t understand one bit of that.

Loucks… on the basketball team… is gonna play football? For me, football is far more important than basketball, but still, I find it hard to believe he contributes on the football field and he is jus wasting his time.

From the above link

http://ssbea.mercer.edu/recruiting.htm

They were looking at another quarterback anyway. With Loucks that is one more scholarship saved. He is supposed to throw a pretty good pass. According to this he can throw the football 80 yards and he is 6-5.

http://missouri.scout.com/2/625450.html

He threw for 1989 yards and 11 touchdowns his senior year, was all county and threw for 427 yards in one game his junior year.

Jawanza Starling probably isn't a Nole

He’s logging more miles on his visits than Amelia Earhart, isn’t taking an official to FSU, and sees a huge logjam at his position this class.

If Jawanza wants to be a Nole that is great, and is welcome aboard. But if he wants to elsewhere I hope our coaches just respect that, admit defeat and offer Phillip Thomas.

My signing day dream is Reid, Charles, Byrd, Starling/Thomas

And we actually have a shot at that. Okay, I guess we have no shot at Byrd, but I think we could get 3 of those 4 things.

One final point… how bad would it be if Reid, Charles and Starling went to UGA? That would mean we lost 4 head to head battles with them, counting Branden Smith.

Okay, one final last point… Greg Reid is visiting Tennessee and maybe Awburn… but I still think it’s down to us and UGA. I really wish Asher Allen stayed for his senior year.

Smith would

have been a Nole in my opinion but we never really pursued it hard. FSU is waiting to pull in the next big elite QB next season so there is some separation. Secord is a depth chart filler with D’Vo no longer playing QB.

by Seminole64 on Jan 27, 2009 3:43 PM EST reply actions

Secord is intriguing,

because two of the guys who run very NFL style schemes (Jimbo and Petrino) like the kid.

by Bud Elliott on Jan 27, 2009 3:57 PM EST up reply actions

He's also joining a crowded depth chart at Arkansas

10 Nathan Dick QB Fr. RS 6-4/217 Allen, TX (Allen)
15 Ryan Mallett QB So. TR 6-6/255 Texarkana, TX (Texas High School)
7 Alex Mortensen QB Jr. RS 6-2/220 Fairburn, GA (Landmark Christian)
8 Tyler Wilson QB Fr. HS 6-2/180 Greenwood, AR (Greenwood)
14 Jim Youngblood QB Fr. HS 6-2/210 Camden, AR (Fairview)

by coonhound on Jan 27, 2009 4:15 PM EST up reply actions

Are any of those guys good other than Mallett?

Secord could still start for 2 years if he went there, as long as he beat out Youngblood, Wilson and Dick his (redshirt) junior year. I know Dick saw some action vs LSU, then they brought in his older brother. I’m not sure if he was in because he was looking good of if Arkansas just had no other options.

http://today.sportingnews.com/sportingnewstoday/20081229/?pg=2

by tdchrisdavis on Jan 27, 2009 4:23 PM EST up reply actions

Oddly enough...

I don’t follow hog athletics. But from a little research on this series of tubes, I do know that Wilson was a highly regarded recruit in both baseball and football. Wilson and was listed as the #2 on the depth behind the elder Dick last year. Mallet had to sit last year, obviously, but should probably start in a Petrino offense.

Next Year?
1. Mallet
2. Wilson
3. Dick
4. Mortensen
5. Youngblood
6. Secord
7. Mitchell (may not play QB)

Either way, recruiting against Bobby Petrino can’t be that hard can it? Maybe it’s hard to throw rocks and all that…

by coonhound on Jan 27, 2009 4:41 PM EST up reply actions

Interesting to see how this plays out

QB is recruiting is always tough because the kids never want to sit their whole careers. If I was a decent QB recruit I’d never look at a team like FSU or Florida, I’d go to Baylor or Wake and see if I could start right away.

Reid likes bama, too

http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/shared-blogs/ajc/cfbrecruit/entries/2009/01/27/alabama_emerges.html

"He wasn’t like some of these other coaches, making all these promises and promises … [Saban] looked me in the eyes and said ‘I can’t really say that you’re going to come in here and start. You’ve got to come here and be ready to compete because the best man plays.’ That’s what I wanted to hear. [Saban] is a straight-up guy. That’s the kind of coach I like."

And Orson thinks it’s “neat” that Coach Richt is reserving the #7 Jersey for him…

http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/shared-blogs/ajc/cfbrecruit/entries/2009/01/27/uga_saving_no_7_1.html

"Coach Richt said he will wait … and what was really neat is that he said he would hold my No. 7 jersey for me, even if there is another player they’re recruiting that wants it and that guy is [deciding] on signing day," Charles said. "I was really surprised and impressed with the way [Richt] was talking about everything."

Reid Interview With AJC...

Playing early and often seems to be his biggest factor:

Q: What really went wrong with Florida?

A: "Florida was my favorite team growing up, so I committed to them as soon as I had the chance my junior year. Then I started looking closer at the depth chart in December —- who was coming back —- and they are stacked at cornerback. Florida has a great program, and I love the players and coaches, but it’s four years of my life, and I have to do what’s best for me. There are better opportunities for me to contribute earlier elsewhere."

AJC is clearly focused on U[sic]GA....

There’s actually more coverage on Auburn and other SEC teams than GT most days.

Having said that, they don’t really focus on South Georgia that much. Despite State Championships from Lowndes, Cairo, Thomas County Central, Camden and others, they really only get into when one of the metro teams is winning. The same goes for recruits from South Georgia. They talk about them, but their focus is on the kids they have seen in person for the past few years. South Georgia could easily be FSU’s territory if they wanted to fence it off.

The pressure to attend the instate school, along with all his best friends already going there seems like too much for him to resist, not to mention the Atlanta Journal Constitutions media blitz of all things GR. Once we reach the 10 win column again, the possibility of landing more 5 stars will rise. That and the fact that we have these sanctions from the NCAA hanging over our heads and the coaching situation, there is just too much ammo for opposing coaches to use against us. Freaking crazy athletic WR.

I think we should sign 3-4 WRs every year. This year we’re stocking up on the big, physical outside threats.

Next year we could potentially have 3-4 WRs commit who have sub-4.4 40s: Meline, Johnson, and Green. Dunkley is floating around and we’ll be recruiting him as well (not that we’ll sign him).

We could also add Pickett and Dunbar to the list of possibilities.

Unbearable

Officially drops Gators. Down to F$U and UGAy. Oh well, one fool doesn’t stop the show.
We will recruit players that want to be a Gator and not selfish, self-promoters.
Sounds like Urban grew weary of his waffling, and called him on it. Good for him. Now we can pursue other options.
He’ll be great covering receivers 5-8 and shorter. Shame there are very few of those.
May not be the case here, but often these things turn out to be academics and/or test scores vis a vis admission standards.

In response to that last one – UF has the lowest GPA scores of any D-1 school! Check my sig.

The nice thing...

…is that despite all the ridiculous statements, there are still some voices of reason on that site.

I hope we don’t sound like that when we lose big recruits. I didn’t hear any when Thomas decided not to visit and chose Syracuse, it seemed like the consensus was frustration more than anything else. Win some, lose some. For UF, losing Greg Reid is kinda like when we lost Marvin Austin and CJ Spiller. Those kinds of defects hurt.

But with Reid it sounds more like the coaches in Gainesville botched it by scolding him rather than telling the kid “go look around if you need to, we’ll be holding a jersey for you.” then pressing on him right before signing day. No wonder they’re so angry. It’s hard to swallow when your beloved coaches turn off a beloved recruit.

not much new here

   But here’s Shurbutt on Debose:

There is an old saying that where there is smoke there is fire. In the case of the recruitment of Under Armour All-American receiver and Florida commit Andre Debose (Sanford, Fla./Seminole), there seems to be a lot of smoke and perhaps a small spark.

Debose, an elite playmaker who is being hailed by some as the replacement for Percy Harvin in Gainesville, is making an official visit to Florida State this weekend. He’s gone from saying that there wasn’t a very good chance he would even take a final trip to definitely visiting Tallahassee. On top of that, sources indicate that the Seminoles feel like there is a realistic chance that they can turn him.

While the safe bet is that he remains a Gator, the door does appear to be cracked somewhat. It will be interesting to see how things play out during the weekend. Redshirt freshman quarterback E.J. Manuel will be his player host for FSU and the Noles will attempt to sell Debose on a bright future catching passes from the talented young quarterback.

and Phillips:

Here’s another projection — current Tennessee commitment Aubrey Phillips will sign with Florida State on National Signing Day. Seminoles offensive line coach Rick Trickett has done an excellent job with the 6-foot-6, 310-pounder and it appears that Florida State is close to closing the deal.

Bobby Bowden visited Phillips at his school on Thursday and the big offensive lineman called it an “honor” to speak with the legendary head coach. He also told ESPN affiliate NoleInsider.com that he and Trickett were “real tight” and that the pair had a “real good relationship”. While he stopped short of saying he was switching his commitment, sources indicate it’s as close to being a done deal as you can get.

nice on phillips

I’d be happy to get him. We could use some nice depth. Offense starts on the line of scrimmage. Get a solid 5 there for years to come. It will be tough to stink on offense, like we have been 6/7 yrs

Tired of the Percy Harvin-role

Now granted, UF does have a dynamic offense to feature Debose with. But the cliche of “he’s gonna step right in and be the next Percy Harvin” thing is plaaaaaayed. How often does that really work out? Too many variables involved to make that prognostication that literally nothing will change in the UF backfield besides a jersey number.

by The K-Man on Feb 1, 2009 3:55 PM EST reply actions

I think you might be referring to what I said about Debose

I don’ t mean that he wll be the same player as Harvin, but they will try to use him in some similar ways – he will be the feature of the UF offense. Lots of screens, some passes deep, and some options with him.

It’s like saying without Parker, Reed will have a Parker-like role.

by tdchrisdavis on Feb 1, 2009 4:22 PM EST up reply actions

No, no, you're right.

I’m not saying he won’t play that piece in the offense, I’m just saying that people can’t chalk up him for identical stats and contributions of Percy. I’m definitely not knocking you, I’m knocking this universally accepted truth that the UF offense will be identical next year, never missing a beat.

Lattimore is wishful thinking

He has been quoted in saying that where his teammates go will impact his decision, so having Bright, Willis and Miller would be huge.

I think our top targets should be:
1. Joyner
2. Willis
3. Lattimore
4. De’Joshua Johnson
5. Clements

I’m still trying to find info on who the top QBs are that we will be going after. I don’t think we have a shot at Heaps or Godfrey.

Debose on his visit this past weekend

I actually ran into Debose and EJ on a friendly Tallahassee Friday night lol.
Debose seemed to be THOROUGHLY enjoying himself, while i cant say the same for EJ though (I guess he’s not really for the crazy club rockstar life). That EJ has a good head on his shoulders, no off field issues to worry about with that guy. BUT…I said all that to say this…I am very confident that we will get Debose, although a little shorter/smaller than I anticipated, he really seemed to like EJ

by ChuckNole on Feb 3, 2009 2:17 AM EST reply actions

Orlando Sentinel

Reported yesterday that Debose says he is still a firm oral commitment to UF even after visiting FSU. I don’t know if it was a homer article or not, but it quotes him as saying this.

by Aussierat on Feb 3, 2009 8:31 AM EST up reply actions

Debose has

not spoke since his FSU visit. That was his coach speaking. He contradicts himself anyways. He says that Greg keeps this stuff close to his chest and then follows that up with he told me he is still a Gator. Until Debose comes out and says that, don’t believe everything you read.

by Seminole64 on Feb 3, 2009 9:41 AM EST up reply actions

Quote

“I’m still a Gator,” Debose said. “I don’t have any second thoughts. I just wanted to check it out. That’s all it is.”
“It’s not a pressure at all. I’m relaxed,” Debose said. “I’m taking it as more of a compliment when schools are interested, but I’m a Gator.”
He has been a Gator and will be for a while.

by badknees81 on Feb 3, 2009 10:10 AM EST up reply actions

Debose has not spoken publicly since his visit to FSU

I’m not sure where you’re getting your qoute or if it was before he visited FSU, but the only thing that came out yesterday is this:

Fowler talked with Mike Cullison, coach of the Seminole High team that Debose helped lead to a state championship. Debose, of course, committed to Florida earlier this month and the receiver has been compared favorably to Percy Harvin.

Still, despite Debose’s verbal commitment to the Gators, FSU hadn’t given up hope of trying to convince Debose to come to Tallahassee. He took an official visit to FSU over the weekend.

The next time he comes up this way, though, might be in 2010 when the Gators come to town. According to Fowler, Cullison spoke with Debose earlier today about his visit.

“He’s still with Florida,” Cullison told Fowler. “For what that’s worth, but as of now that seems to be the plan he’s sticking to.”

But … you never know. We’ll see what happens on Wednesday … beter known in some circles as National Signing Day.

Sem64

it’s easy to believe the paysites. When they realized they could no longer further the Gary Brown story, they switched to Debose. We never had a real shot at him in my opinion. To each their own, however.

by Bud Elliott on Feb 3, 2009 11:05 AM EST up reply actions

I'm not a member

of any paysites. I’m not in the recruiting business myself but I have two very close friends that I went to school with that work for rivals, and they are right a lot more then they are wrong. The OS is a gator news site. They have gator grads that will spin a story every which way. Now he could have said those things Monday, but from my experience interviews like that are posted then, not a day after.

Do I think we get Debose, NO! But I will say that FSU did make up a lot of ground on the kid who grew up loving the Noles. If FSU would have shown the late love at the beginning he would be 100% Noles Lock.

And to think we have a top 100 player next year in Cummings and look real good for a 5-star lock, in Brandon Willis. Also look good for his teammate Corey Miller.
