Charles

Charles would create a new position Jimbo likes to use, the H-Back. If we bring in Charles and can continue to bring in H-Backs, we will no longer bring in Fullbacks, which is part of the reason the backs that Jimbo has brought in have been bigger than in the past.

by kyled on Jan 26, 2009 11:20 AM EST up reply actions

Kyled is correct.

Caz is more of the traditional In-Line Tight End, while Orson is the HBack

caz

isn’t he very good at blocking?

pass catching he stinks of course. But i was under the impression that he was underrated as a football player. Most don’t seem to know how much blocking means

by Cee on Jan 26, 2009 5:02 PM EST up reply actions

He's a very good blocking college TE

Not on the level of Daniel Graham (Colorado, late 90’s), or Matt Spaeth (Minnesota, mid ’00’s), but very good.

by Bud Elliott on Jan 26, 2009 5:12 PM EST up reply actions

Richardson

Has this been announced that he will switch to safety or is that what is believed to happen?

by KnightNoles on Jan 26, 2009 12:22 PM EST reply actions

with only 2 QB what if

we lose them would Dvo go back. I dont like having only 2 on the roster.

by Desman on Jan 26, 2009 2:50 PM EST up reply actions

qbs

that makes two of us. Two Qbs only is scary. Especially when one hasn’t even played a down at the college level :/

by Cee on Jan 26, 2009 5:04 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah....

at that point you just throw Parker back there and make something happen with his feet. Just like VaTech did with Cory Holt (though he had quarterback in his background…not sure that Parker does).

by MNeilson on Jan 26, 2009 6:57 PM EST up reply actions

Case in point

If Georgia Tech got down to 3rd string they might have just run “Victory Formation” for every play of the 2nd half against us.

by The K-Man on Jan 26, 2009 10:34 PM EST up reply actions

I knew

I knew he was going to play baseball and Jimbo said something along those lines but I didnt know if he was going to WR or Defense

by KnightNoles on Jan 26, 2009 1:01 PM EST reply actions

Dvo might

be a decent safety. He played some in high school.

by fsunole23 on Jan 26, 2009 2:01 PM EST reply actions

Richardson

Yea I see that one of D’vo forty time was a 4.65 but sure seemed he was faster than that. I wouldnt be too worried about that if he can run routes well and get seperation, I mean there is a guy named Larry Fitzgerald that ran combine forty at 4.53 and Anquan Boldin ran a 4.71 in the combine.. Larry is 2 inches taller then D’vo but Anquan is listed at 6’1 but may have some more pounds on him…

So my conclusion is I dont think he would be too slow to play receiver

by KnightNoles on Jan 26, 2009 2:30 PM EST reply actions

I'd be surprised if he played another down for FSU

He is a good athlete but at this point he probably doesn’t have the ability to learn another spot. The kid has issues. His scholarship is worth more to us given to another recruit.

Also, the 4.65 time isn’t a combine time, and I’d be interested to see what he would run at the combine.

I think he will (in the order of likelihood):
Drafted for baseball
Fails out of school
Plays football.

by Bud Elliott on Jan 26, 2009 2:39 PM EST up reply actions

If Im looking at this right

We are good at OL, WR, and LB. I dont like the QB area with only 2 but what can you do. I see a lot of Fr in this recruit getting playing time. Maybe not a start but I see them playing. The secondary I think will be where we need to look at. I feel the front 7 can work and will but the secondary scares me. Youth has both good and bad things. at least P.R. will be back.

I think

Parks will be a very good player if he keeps his grades up. He covered Julio Jones in the Under Armour game last year and did a pretty good job on him.

in nickel formations he’s on the edge :(

by Cee on Jan 27, 2009 1:38 AM EST reply actions

Disappointed that we automatically throw him inside instead of waiting for him to outgrow his end position, but the edge news is encouraging because it means that we are acknowledging the need to get our best four pass rushers on the field at the same time.

by Bud Elliott on Jan 27, 2009 1:52 AM EST up reply actions

This still stinks though

I’d hate to see McCray and McDaniel on the field and McAllister sitting on the sidelines even though he is better than the 2 DE we have out there.

I'm Chart-tarded

I apologize in advance for my ignorance, but I’m not understanding the depth chart. Is it supposed to reflect 1st team, 2nd team, etc….or merely the total players at the various positions, organized by years of eligibility?

by The K-Man on Feb 2, 2009 3:24 PM EST reply actions

Sorry...

I guess it’s not so much a “depth chart” in the traditional sense as it is a list of who we’ve got on scholarship, at what positions, and what year they are.

by MattDNole on Feb 2, 2009 3:26 PM EST up reply actions

Gotcha

So it’s more of a look at what we’ve got in the cupboard. The traditional depth charts often have players crossed-listed in different positions. This gives you a better look at the inventory.

by The K-Man on Feb 2, 2009 3:34 PM EST up reply actions

We lose very little the next two years

Nobody that can’t be replaced with the exception of P-Rob. If things go our way tomorrow, then I think we can not only replace P Rob but get someone who will be better.

2009 starters

Who do you guys think they will be?

Here is my best guess… and no, I don’t think we’ll start 12 guys on offense, but I’ll list an extra WR
QB – Ponder
RB – Thomas
FB – Sims
WR – Fortson
WR – Easterling
WR – Reed
TE – Caz
LT – Datko
LG – Hudson
C – McMahon
RG – Spurlock
RT – Sanders

DE – White
DT – Mincey
DT – Thacker
DE – McNeil
OLB – Watson
MLB – Williams
OLB – Bradham
CB – Robinson
S – Parks
S – Robinson
CB – Allen/Reid

We’ll under-use guys like Mizell, McCray and probably Reid if we get him.

DE – McAllister

Our goal is simple: Best in the land

Kill a fly with an axe -- Mickey Andrews

by FSUSOM on Feb 2, 2009 5:32 PM EST up reply actions

Parks

The last I read Parks was working at both corner and safety.

Caz is a vicious blocker but not exactly Barry Sanders in the open field after a catch. I have never seen him drop a ball though that I can remember anyway.

You know McAllister weighs 7 pounds less than McDaniels. He will probably weigh 270 by spring drills. I would say he is big enough to play DT now.

There is only two scholarship quarterbacks true but there was a walk on, Andrew Knowles and Eddinger. I don’t even know if Knowles is still there. Luke Louckes is supposed to walk on this spring also. I never knock walk ons because it is not inconceivable that both Ponder and Manuel could be injured. It would probably be a better option than trying to put Bert Reed back under center although he did play quarterback.

by DocHoliday2 on Feb 2, 2009 6:46 PM EST reply actions

Loucks

Where did you hear Luke Loucks is walking on in football? I know he was a decent HS QB, but not a big time prospect or anything.

If he did play football, he would either have to be put on a football scholarship or give up his basketball scholarship.

Don’t see any way that happens.

by LaneFenner on Feb 2, 2009 7:25 PM EST reply actions

It's scary looking at the WR

there’s only three I can really trust (Fortson, Reed, Easterling). We aren’t going to be very good next year. At least it will put more heat on Bowden.

This dysfunctional coaching hierarchy is not helping us reach our goals.

about this. . . . . . .

Our goal is simple: Best in the land

Kill a fly with an axe -- Mickey Andrews

by FSUSOM on Feb 2, 2009 8:34 PM EST up reply actions

I disagree

It’s true that we will have some unproven players, but who did we lose from this past year?

On offense, Antone, Carr and Parker and that is it. We gain Pressley, QB and OL should be much improved.

On defense we lost a great player at DE, two good LBs and a bunch of experienced yet not so great defensive backs.

Every year you can look at the depth chart and point to guys that are unproven and point to guys that left and say that they will be big losses, but every year a bunch of guys step up.

This time last year, did anyone thing Easterling, Reed, Thomas, Datko, etc. would have the year that they did? Same thing will happen this year – a bunch of guys will step up. Maybe it’s Parks, maybe Fortson, maybe White, but it’ll be a few guys.

by tdchrisdavis on Feb 2, 2009 8:35 PM EST up reply actions

FWIW I think our positional performance goes like this from 08-09

QB – better
RB – slightly better
WR – about the same
OL – better
DL – slightly worse (DT will be MUCH improved)
LB – better (Bradham and Williams will both be excellent)
DB – about the same (hard to get much worse, I think Parks and Allen will play well)
Special teams – much worse (lose not only a great kicker and great punter but a great KR guy)

I think its is only going to be time on the DL.

These guys are going to blow up I hope next year but I dont think it will be tell late in the year. I think they are going to be fast though and MA gets his @#$% together then speed might kill. I cant wait tell that speed gets some power.

DB are going to be like the o-line this year. not looking good but will do better than we all think. gut feeling.

ST- Man I think the speek kills goes here. Its not going to matter because we just have so much speed.

by Desman on Feb 4, 2009 9:46 PM EST up reply actions

Having

Parker, Carr, and Surrency put a lot more fear in the opposing defenses, even if it was just from a physical standpoint. I think our WR really opened things up for us last year. But you are right in that guys will step up… just don’t know who yet.

This dysfunctional coaching hierarchy is not helping us reach our goals.

Optimistic view

We lose to GT and UF and are 10-2 going into the ACC Champ.

by crmnole on Feb 2, 2009 9:17 PM EST up reply actions

I think we can beat GT

Their defense was a big part of their success last year and they lost a lot from that front 4.

I would hope that Mickey gives us a better game plan this year, and our players are more used to it.

GT going to the flexbone would have 1 of 2 scenarios: They struggle at first but when they finally get the right players they turn into a pretty good team

OR

They have enough guys who fit to do it well and nobody has seen this offense and can’t stop it. But on the 2nd and 3rd meetings the players are more used to it and GT’s success will go down.

I think we have option 2 happening. GT will be good next year, but their defense loses a lot, DC will have better plans and defensive players will be better prepared.

picking wins and losses is silly

instead, assign a % chance that we’ll win each game. It’s an eye-opening exercise and one that will make you change your position.

by Bud Elliott on Feb 2, 2009 11:24 PM EST up reply actions

fine

69% we beat GT because they lose there Def. But the 29% win because they got a fast Option QB to run there Off. They are going to be just as hot next year. If MA learns something this year it better be to watch LSU vs GT – bowl game

95% UF over FSU.

I would argue that health is a skill. You can’t teach skill. Yes, holding people out of contact will likely reduce injuries but at what cost? I would say that a tough off season program would be good to teach players to fight through pain but I don’t think you can change your program just to keep players healthy. You need to recruit players that you think will stay healthy.

by evenflow58 on Feb 5, 2009 7:39 AM EST up reply actions

you can teach health.

for instince, most of these guys are on diets right. in that there should be a large amounts of potassium like sweet potato, strawbarrys, and bananas. Potassium helps muscles heal faster when they tear. that make you stronger. Also you want V-D. as we all know for strong bones. you add small things like this w/ thing like IBU, Ice and stretches and you have healthy guys. I think FSU STR and Con coach did a gret job. When we needed players on the field they were there. we had a good injury free year and I think we will have a few more because of him.

by Desman on Feb 5, 2009 8:24 AM EST up reply actions

I’ll agree with you to a certain point. Some people, like Antone Smith or Percy Harvin, just can’t take the beating. That’s where the skill part comes in.

by evenflow58 on Feb 5, 2009 12:28 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, you shouldn't change your program to keep people healthy if its to the detriment of other success factors

But if, by a comparison, we have a lot more injuries than other successful teams I’d like to know what the difference is. It could be true that we just are taking chances on injury prone athletes, but I’d like to know what evidence there is that that is even possible to know during the recruiting process (barring the ones already hurt during H.S.,)

Pressley is a great cut candidate

JUCO guy very unlikely to graduate or stay eligible. He also will likely never be the same after ACL surgery (most guys aren’t)

once he got to D1

he seemed to either showboat, or just didn’t have fundamentals…He would jump for balls that were thrown at his gut. There is an example of this on a 3rd down in this past season’s UF game. Even if he catches the ball, he doesn’t convert because he’s in the air.
