I've still yet to grasp why recruiting has become such a big discussion topic

I’ve always held the opinion that I don’t care until they’re in a Nole jersey and actually playing.

Then again I’m busy with all the draft preperations at Big Cat Country.

As you might can tell, I tend to go crazy with it every January.

I guess I like it because recruiting is my favorite part of NCAA on Playstation.

Hah true

As I said, I’m busy with all the draft prep at SBN’s Jaguar blog. I guess the difference for me is that there is so much more of a quantum leap from High school to Division I-A then from I-A to the NFL that’s is much more of a crap shoot. With the amount of “Blue Chip” busts every year, I think it’s pointless. Here’s how you determine recruiting rankings, how many crystal footballs did you add to the trophy case over 4 years.

It's like baseball's hot stove league or Spring Training

Anytime you are dealing with “what could be” you’ll see a lot of interest. You can easily build up expectations to unrealistc levels and there’s little anybody can say to sway you from that. I mean there’s no evidence in any way shape or form. It’s like Christmas. The best part of Christmas is not actually opening the gifts but thinking what the gifts could be.

Greg Reid

40+ yards on the opening kickoff.

You've probably answered this Matt

But what team and number are our commits on?

With thanks to tdchrisdavis...

1 – Debose
2 – Smith
9 – McAllister
10 – Thompson
24 – Reid
55 – McDaniel

All on the Black team.

Hopkins is as well.

I think Branden Smith is number 1 on White.

Thanks for setting this up

I love these high school all american games. I am gad these guys get to display their talent on a national spotlight. If you can make it as the best in the nation in h.s you deserve it.

I hate how much the double and tripled up on the numbers…..thats dumb.

Could they have at least made it blue and red or something sound I don’t sound like I am talking about people based on their race.

They don't show the lines very often

But McDaniel got doubled on that last play, and still managed to break free right before the ball was thrown…looked good.

I'm not sure.

Haven’t heard anything about it. We’ve got to pair him with other guys to make sure he doesn’t get the double team like he is tonight.

Something interesting of note

that you may be able to shed some light on Matt…..

It seems like our recruiting base was nation wide in the start of the decade after the 90’s.

Seem like it shrunk to the Florida (not even all of it) and a little bit of the southeast.

No wonder why

by UNFNOLE on Jan 4, 2009 8:54 PM EST up reply actions

It is almost as impossible to get a top player out of California away from USC...

as it is to get a top player in Alabama away from that state.

I think Carroll, Saban, Miles, Brown, etc have made it a point to keep the local talent they have.

USC's

by UNFNOLE on Jan 4, 2009 8:58 PM EST up reply actions

It’s what elite teams are able to do…which is why we were able to do it in the 90s. If we were at that level we’d still be able to pull a few good one from Cali every other year or so

Barkley looks good. We (as in FSU commits) get good pressure on him, but he's doing well.

I really like Reid

Does anyone think our future is brighter than Miami’s at this point?

Whenever we drop Bobby and his cronies, we will need to hit the ground running with some recruiter types, rebuild the talent base, then get someone to come in and dominate as a coach and recruiter.

Happy picture: if we get Reid and don’t get decimated on Monday (NCAA), we could be alright.

People who sell subscriptions say he is...

I don’t take them seriously. UF/ LSU/ MIAMI battle

I get playing for our offense… but not if you’re a defensive player. Mickey is beyond washed up and the word is out. I’ll keep up the pressure, but I think we should call this operation 2012 and not operation 2010

by Bud Elliott on Jan 4, 2009 9:50 PM EST up reply actions

Poor Recruiting

The Rivals/Scout HS Recruiting phenomenon has got to put more pressure on guys like Amato who don’t recruit. The lay football fan is so much more aware of what recruits are out there. Here we are screaming about guys slipping through the cracks now because we can follow everyone’s offers and interest in each school. We as fans still don’t have power to do anything about this directly, but these poor recruiting coaches have to feel a bit more uneasy if they aren’t putting time to researching and visiting recruits.

by NOLEinTX on Jan 4, 2009 9:52 PM EST reply actions

I think the accountability and increased visibility is a great thing

These coaches get paid a lot of money and don’t perform.

The negative recruiting against our program because of our coaches is deafening. We have the oldest coaching staff in america (FACT), and some of them can’t even use a computer. While Saban is videoconferencing with recruits during their schoolday… our guys mistakenly call the internet “the ebay and the google.”

Think we maintain a decent database on recruits from grade 5 like UF does? Heck no. We rely on some hack from jacksonville for our primary evals.

Reid is the playmaker we have been looking for in that depleted secondary. Reid is a must get.

by Seminole4Life on Jan 4, 2009 10:48 PM EST reply actions

I think Debose would help,

but offensive athletes are not a HUGE need. We have those. Sure, he is an exceptional highschool player and has potential to be a Percy Harvin, but will that put us over the hump? Probably not. Reid fills a huge need and has potential to be an exceptional player. I wouldn’t put a ton of stock and resources into Debose

by UNFNOLE on Jan 5, 2009 1:47 PM EST up reply actions

True enough. However...

…I think it was MattD who recently made the point that we need to keep UF from building their class. Debose a must-have? Maybe not. Debose a guy we want to face for 3 or 4 years? Absolutely not.

Not disagreeing with your point at all about Reid, but as we continue to talk about rebuilding the program, I think we need to start emphasizing the fact that what we’ve enabled Florida to do with their program has raised the bar that much higher for our comeback, and that’s why I’ve made a few posts to that effect today. Not a downer, just reality. I hate that reality, but I’ve come to accept it.

by TRMNole on Jan 5, 2009 2:02 PM EST up reply actions

Well, true.

I think it would be more important to steal him from Florida than for us to have him, if that makes sense.

by UNFNOLE on Jan 5, 2009 2:22 PM EST up reply actions

no one player will put us over the hump tho. Debose would be amazing to have. We don’t have a debose on offense. Are guys are good , but we don’t have a julio jones etc. Reid would be amazin to have also. I’m happy with our class is it is now. But one of these guys could make it even better

by Cee on Jan 5, 2009 4:05 PM EST up reply actions

Debose is not Jones.

I have doubts he is even a Harvin.

by UNFNOLE on Jan 5, 2009 8:04 PM EST up reply actions

He is fast. On the TD last night, he didn't run away from anybody.

I was expecting more, to tell the truth. Doesn’t look like Harvin at all.

Of course, I would give anything to have him at FSU.

Our goal is simple: Best in the land

by FSUSOM on Jan 5, 2009 9:13 PM EST up reply actions

Same thing I thought

The safety was just as fast… the big play was really just there because Brandon Smith misread the pass.

Much better. Smith is the one that Debose tooled on earlier.

downs would be my top choice if he qualifies and stays at safety

by Cee on Jan 4, 2009 11:04 PM EST up reply actions

Possibly Jacobbi if Mincey fails out.

Also Hopkins will most likely be the starting kicker.
Only other possibility is Downs at Safety

by Zach_Nole on Jan 4, 2009 11:05 PM EST up reply actions

mc callister and jacobbi should be amazing for us. I remember some dude from SFLvarsity i think it was saying thompson is amazing as well. He said he would be 5 stars if it wasn’t for his size. Along with downs looks like we got 4 real good players. I didn’t get to see thompson myself, but i see the other 3 as ALL ACC 1st team in their careers.

by Cee on Jan 4, 2009 11:13 PM EST up reply actions

i’m a bit sad we didn’t get anyone tonight. Normally , i’d be steaming. But after reading this site i’ve been grounded. So it’;s ok haha

Depressing, eh?

Welcome to the club of people who venture away from Warchant

I can’t wait to blast Bowden and co when we get embarrassed on National signing day… again.

by Bud Elliott on Jan 4, 2009 11:16 PM EST up reply actions

eh, we got some players. Obviously not the same as the “best” schools. Next year is gonna be huge for us. If we win the acc and do well in our bowl game we should be top 4 recruiting class eh?

by Cee on Jan 4, 2009 11:24 PM EST up reply actions

ouch!

perhaps for a team that didn’t even win it’s division finishing in the top 15 in recruiting can’t exactly be classified as “embarrasing”.

Even more true when you consider that they don’t know how many schollarships they have left!

Yeah, right!

by truecolors on Jan 4, 2009 11:43 PM EST up reply actions

In college football, you are charged with keeping up with your principal rival.

And Florida State has put itself in this position. “Ouch!” is 45-12 followed by 45-15 at home. Uncensored isn’t handing out gold stars. For FSU to get anywhere near where fans expect it to be, it has to land a top five recruiting class and keep top players away from the University of Florida. This is simply the reality of the situation we find ourselves in now.

by TRMNole on Jan 5, 2009 10:41 AM EST up reply actions

ya gotta learn to crawl before you learn to walk tho…. Meaning it’s not realistic to hope for a top 5 recruiting class every year when we haven’t won recently. Be happy with what we got this season. Keep winning and it will come in time

by Cee on Jan 5, 2009 4:03 PM EST up reply actions

We shouldn't have to learn to crawl.

We learned to crawl, then walk, and now our program is in the adult diapers stage.

by Bud Elliott on Jan 5, 2009 11:09 PM EST up reply actions

Why wait until NSD? And no one does it better than you.

Everyone at this other site seems very happy today. Of course this other site is the one that reports that “no news is good news.”

by TRMNole on Jan 5, 2009 10:49 AM EST up reply actions

I, for one, am checking for NCAA news every five minutes.

Don’t expect us to be happy by the end of this week. I’m not sold that we won’t find out today.

What I really want to hear today is the announcement of a few coaching vacancies.

by MattDNole on Jan 5, 2009 11:10 AM EST up reply actions

Andrew Carter

is reporting that Micky is leaving the door open still. Could be a big week of news (coaching staff, NCAA).

by UNFNOLE on Jan 5, 2009 11:21 AM EST up reply actions

It's time to get the news cycle rolling.

And seriously, what could be better at this point than to announce the penalties, let go of some dead weight, and then put Jimbo behind a mic to say, “There’s going to be some changes around here.”

It’s time to start taking advantage of the very limited opportunities we have before they completely run out. After all this subterfuge, we actually have a chance to spin something positive out of this disaster by doing something like this, but does anyone actually think this would happen? Does anyone have any confidence in FSU anymore?

by TRMNole on Jan 5, 2009 1:36 PM EST up reply actions

I think that it won't take much

to get us back to where we were. FSU, with the right people selling it, will not be a hard sell. Heck, college football is so cyclical that even if we go down, we won’t be down for long. It will just take some change, which is why I am in favor of new blood. We just need people in there that are WILLING to do the work that it will take.

by UNFNOLE on Jan 5, 2009 1:44 PM EST up reply actions

It helps, doesn't it?

And the truth will set you is free.

Im assuming manboobs is Amato. Seriously though we need to fire him. He has done absolutely nothing since he has been here.

Rivals UGA site has an article on Greg Reid (premium content)

I’d like to see what it says. If they were to get Reid, Smith, and if you think Thomas goes there too, then that’s a dynamite DB class. (They also have two other 3-stars committed.) If we are to pull Starling and Thomas then ours looks good but still sans a potential shut-down corner. Reid is THE premier get for us right now.

by NOLEinTX on Jan 5, 2009 8:53 PM EST reply actions

Doesn't even mention FSU at all. Anywhere.

Reid talks about visiting UGA, UF, and Miss St.

Our goal is simple: Best in the land

by FSUSOM on Jan 5, 2009 9:11 PM EST up reply actions

He wants to go to the SEC I'm guessing.

We are the only ACC team that offered. I wonder who was responsible for his recruitment. Mullen is going to Miss. St. I wonder if that has any pull… granted Reid is a DB and Mullen was OC at UF.

by NOLEinTX on Jan 5, 2009 9:22 PM EST up reply actions

That's what I assume too.

Our defensive coaches probably don’t even know he decommitted.

Our goal is simple: Best in the land

by FSUSOM on Jan 5, 2009 9:28 PM EST up reply actions

What a shame.

We need new energy devoted to recruiting. The great efforts of a few can’t make up for the lack of by others. The idea of a recruiting-minded running backs coach is great. Especially a RB coach who can visit recruits without daddy riding shotgun.

Reid is a guy we could throw the guarantee of lots of early playing time to… and not break our promise.

by NOLEinTX on Jan 5, 2009 9:49 PM EST up reply actions

He would start next year

Even if Patrick Robinson comes back.

by tdchrisdavis on Jan 5, 2009 9:59 PM EST up reply actions

Man we at least

need to get Reid here on a visit. Im getting sick and tired of our defensive recruiters, they seem so lazy.

by fsunole23 on Jan 6, 2009 12:16 AM EST reply actions

I think we are in serious contention for Reid

I said no shot for Debose and Smith and Dye and Giddens, and got blasted for those opinions by many guys who I respect greatly, but I have a different feeling on Reid. In Fact, I am more confident in Reid than Starling, though that may show how little I think of our Starling chances.

by Bud Elliott on Jan 6, 2009 1:12 AM EST up reply actions

Why do you think we have a chance?

Do you think he sees how much time he will get to play?

by NOLEinTX on Jan 6, 2009 1:25 AM EST up reply actions

I'm crossing fingers and toes.

Wonder if he hung out with McDaniel, McAllister, or Thompson throughout the week… Brothers Mac got good pressure and forced the White (team) QBs to throw some ducks his way.
