Demonte McAllister
This is a fluff piece. I hate writing them, but this is deserved.
McAllister is one of my two favorite recruits in the class. He plays the defensive line, DT or DE, but I believe he has the ability to play DE in such a way that he will eventually become an All-America and first round draft pick.
Pete Carroll called him "one of the best three technique tackles I have ever seen." Of the FSU defensive commits, most of the hype has gone to Jaccobi McDaniel (and rightly so). Not anymore. After McAllister's dominating performance in the Under Armour All Star game, his "stock" among Nole fans has risen tremendously. He dominated, especially in the first half. He seemly got pressure on every play.
It is unfair to have McAllister's agility and quickness at his size (6'2 255ish). He blows by offensive tackles. What really stands out to me about is his burst off the line. It's just ridiculous.
That being said, he still has to get in the weight room to get some pounds on his frame. I want him to get to around 280ish without losing quickness.
I think he will start from day one at FSU, providing our coaches are smart enough to play him at DE (probably not). I expect him to have an inconsistent freshman year. After that, watch out ACC and nation.

He Dominates
I watched him in the Under Armour game and he made a lot of offensive linemen look silly. I agree that he could start as a freshman. He has a frame that will support more weight, so my guess is that if he gains he should maintain his quickness.

He's gonna play DT here
We are just so thin at DT and the coaches see his size. It’s gonna be a huge waste.
Just like Mincey should have been playing DE this whole time.

The idea that he should play defensive end is foreign to our coaches. Why? Our defensive ends are strictly one-gap players. Our entire defense is a one-gap defense. I’m not here to debate the effectiveness of this, but we can use Demonte in such a better way. What way?
Two-Gap end.
Increasingly, defenses are going to mixed-gap schemes. That is, where some players are playing a one-gap responsibility, and others play a two-gap responsibility.
I propose that we play this:
WDE- White- one gap (his great speed and aggressiveness help here)
NG- McCray- two-gap (305lbs and a great center of gravity)
DT- Mincey- one-gap
SDE- Two-Gap
this is hard to illustrate, but this is classic Belichek. In fact, Bama did this to UF and frustrated the heck out of them.
McAllister is really an insane weapon. Correctly using Demonte will force teams to guess at our scheme, rather than being certain as they are now.
I’ll post an article on this later when my internet improves.

Does anyone else want a Saban disciple as DC?
The man is amazing (or is that Belicheck).
I really like the Smart Football article on Saban teaching pattern reading and cornerback leverage.
I like what you said about mixed gaps, ncensored.
Obviously that wouldn’t be the only requirement.

Fast and Furious football had a bunch of legit college and pro playbooks
The best ones aren’t there however. Names like Rich Rodriguez, Spurrier, Petrino, Oklahoma 2000, 1994 FSU.
I have that Mickey playbook as well. Interesting stuff. Tackling and Separation, baby.
I can link you the Spurrier 2000 one if you want to see it. I lost Petrino’s.

I would think
Jaccobi McDaniel and Demonte McAllister dont just line up as LE or DT. I would like to think FSU would be smart about it and get them to line up all across the D-line like EB did this year.
Right now we have
Jamar Jackson DE 6-4 237 Fr.,
Kevin McNeil DE 6-2 253 Jr., and
Craig Yarborough DE 6-0 228 Jr.
For DT you have
Emmanuel Dunbar DT 6-5 291 Jr.,
Justin Mincey DT 6-5 284 Jr.,
Kendrick Stewart DT 6-2 268 Jr.
Budd Thacker DT 6-2 280 Jr.
I dont know how elses might try to go but thats about it. So far coming in is
Jacobbi McDaniel DT 6-0 267,
Demonte McAllister DE 6-3 260,
Brandon Jenkins DE 6-3 225.
I think I can see a problem we will have next year. I think we will get killed next year on the run. I dont think we have enought size on the D-line. This is why I think for recruiting reasons we need to go out and get 1 or 2 6"5+ that weigh 310lb. sounds crazy because we all know there is not speed there but we dont need speed in the mid we need holes filled so the backs have to try to jump out side where our LBs can get them. I also think this would be the best year to switch to the 3-4 because we are hurting on the D-line. with us turning SS into LB this could work well because we could have a SS/LB stay in and cover the slot WR better than a big / slow LB’s

You are right... AND this year's defense was the worst against the run in some time
The 3-4… won’t work because we don’t have a 350LB tackle who isn’t completely obese, AND Mickey can’t teach the 3-4 with our current personnel, unfortunately.
Good list. I think we can’t count on Dunbar, or Yarborough, however.

Our defensive recruiting just flat out stinks
We will have four non-seniors at defensive line next year. Think about that…just brutal. And if McAllister plays DT, that means ONE defensive end.
We’re fine with linebacker.
CB we have 1 senior, 1 junior, 1 sophomore and who knows how many freshmen. With the way things are going we won’t have a freshman who is a true corner for sure.
S we have an inexpirenced seinor and a bunch of underclassmen who have never seen the field.

Demonte
It would seem to me that Demonte almost has to play defensive end next year with Brown leaving. The position will be very thin and while presently light for a DT, McAllister is perfect size for a DE. He and White could give us respectable DEs in the present. It would also gvie McAllister time to put on more weight.

You do NOT take a great space player and move him inside. You move him inside IF he can’t play in space.

I swear FSU fans have been brainwashed into thinking DE’s are 250LB players. We will not compete if that keeps up. Notice how our DE’s all get turned into OLB’s at the next level?
Playing defensive end is not all about sacks. I’m not saying that Both DE’s need to be 280, but if you want to play a 295 tackle and a 305 tackle… you need to have a larger defensive end or humongous linebackers.
Great DE’s at 280 (which is a 20lb gain. No way is that kid 265 yet.)
1st/2nd round studs 2007/2008
Jamaal Anderson 282lbs
Adam Carriker 308 lbs
Charles Johnson, UGA, 275lbs
Chris long 285lbs
Derrick Harvey 275lbs
Lawrence Jackson 275lbs
Phillip Merling 291lbs
Calais Campbell 290lbs
Jason Jones 281lbs
I can keep going if you want, but we have a special player here who can dominate on the edge at that size.
FSU fans for some reason think DE’s need to be tiny, speed guys. I’ve now realized that is incorrect.
Did you know we had our worst run defense in 18 years? We’re way too small.

well if they are to big they are to slow, to small they get pushed around.
I think its based on physicists. My weight, Str, speed verse your High, Weight. I want on FAT DT right in the middle shading the weak side, another DT shadind week side of the Str G. A fsmaller but faster DE on the Weak side, and a bigger stronger DE on the Strside out side the TE/T. The LB would be the same but backwords. I would want my faster OLB on the Strong side to help contain and make the HB bounce back in and the Weak side OLB strong to help with the zone/read cut backs. The stronger guy can fill holes.

Just to play devils advocate to FSUState and FSUn, Pete Carroll did call him the best 3 technique DT he's seen in HS in a while
And, to a degree, the 3 technique is kinda playing in space…the space created in the interior by the 1 technique NT. He’s matched up on 1 blocker and protected from double teams by the angles of deployment.
To an extent, he would be more of a space/disruptive player there then at SDE, maybe. If we’re running a spatially dictated 43, the SDE has more similarities with the NT/1 technique in his responsibilities than the 3 technique, which, like the WDE, is more of a space/disrupter instead of a “clogger/holder” like the 1 or SDE.
Think of it in terms of a classic 34 line up. They utilize 2 SDE 2 gap holders and a 1 technique clogger. The disrupter responsibilities are assigned solely to the OLBs.
Both fronts have equal amounts of “disrupters” and “cloggers”
34: 4 cloggers/holders (3 down linemen, 1 mlbs) 2 disrupters (olbs, off “3 technique” MLB)
43: 4 cloggers/holders (NT, SDE, Sam, MLB) 2 disrupters (WLB (shielded from blocks by NT) and WDE)
43: 5 c

Do we think Mincey could? 6'5 285 right? Or, if we go as UNC has below, maybe Dawkins eventually? Can he hold 280 like EJ Wilson? We were led to believe by virtue of him playing DT for us this year
With the added benefit of having developed some disruptive skills by way of playing the 3 technique for us the last two years.
Look at UNC for a good example of D-Line recruiting done right:
SDE: EJ Wilson: 6’2 280 (shorter for the leverage needed for cloggers/holders, 280 for the girth needed to play 2 gaps)
DT: Marvin Austin: 6’2 300 (we really wanted him for this very reason, the dude can disrupt at 300 lbs. McDaniel is 280 now and could get there and retain his ability, McDaniel could by his 2nd year in the program, maybe. If not, he’d get to 290 and still retain his explosiveness. He’s a wrestler, so his weight isn’t a completely accurate representation of what his frame can handle)
NT: Cam Thomas 6’3 300 (backed up by 2 other 300lbers)
WDE: Robert Quinn 6’5 260 (backed up by a 6’7 and 6’6 dude, with 2 more 6’7 guys committed for 09. I LOVE tall tall WDEs. If it’s all about creating space to amplify your disruptiveness, then added wingspan and body length inherently creates more space for you. This is why Mario Williams is so successful, besides the fact that the dude runs a 4.5 at 280 lbs)

You may very well be right on this. The problem is that we are way too small as a defense with a 290lb tackle and 250lb ends. Do me a favor and look at the elote defenses across the nation (USC, Ohio State, UF, BC), and tell me how much their front 7 defenders combine to weigh.
Now do ours.
Scary, huh?
Why is this a problem? Overcommitment. We have to over commit to the run and thus leave ourselves vulnerable to the pass.
Demonte is a waste at defensive tackle regardless of whether he is a great one or not.
Do not take a great edge guy and move him inside. Shameful.

I agree with you insofar as that we lack the necessary run-stopping SDE
Without it, and instead with basically 2 WDEs (as some were proposing with Brown/White when it seemed Brown was coming back) we’re running a 3-5-4. No one has ever run this configuration for a reason (there aren’t enough run stoppers being the easiest to see)
But USC’s front according to rivals:
SDE: Kyle Moore 6’6 270
NT: Averall Spicer 6’2 295
DT: (space player) Fili Moala 6’5 295
WDE: Everson Griffon 6’3 265
Now, they are significantly bigger than us at LB. Pete Carroll acknowledges that the field is only 53 yards in width and understands that using a spatial 43 makes instincts, size, and burst more important for the LBs than speed…something we don’t understand. (And Carroll’s 43 is still a flow so that argument is debunked)
We could very easily get bigger on the LB the next year or two if:
Will: CJ Mizell 6’2 230
Mike: Vince WIlliams 6’0 240
Sam: Nigel Bradham 6’2 250
Don’t think Vince can support more than 240 on his 6’0 frame (he’s already pretty jacked and full) so we’d be 25 lbs smaller than USC was this year (Malauaga was 260 and Cushing 255)
But, we could potentially make up that loss on the DLine, assuming we find a SDE
WDE: Markus White 6’4 255
NT: Moses McCray 6’2 305
DT: Jaccobi McDaniel 6’1 290 or Demonte McAllister the next year 6’4 285
SDE…..Even though you’re right in saying Mincey is more of a disrupter/space player than he would be a holder/clogger, which you need to be if you’re gonna play the SDE right…he’s our only player that has the necessary mass. Dawkins, maybe, I dunno how heavy he got this year (his rivals says 242 but that’s definietly selling him short) If he were to get to 280, he’d be a better choice than Mincey because he has played SDE/NT and knows the run-stopping Technique.
The argument for Demonte McAllister at end is one that wants not to sacrifice and waste his disruptive/in space abilities. My counter is that those skills would be better displayed at 3-technique DT than SDE, as Pete Carroll has agreed. Here, he is shielded from double teams and has the interior space to beat his one man. At SDE, he would be routinely double teamed by a Tackle and TE, or Tackle and FB or HB or any combination thereof. His main responsibility would be strongside contain and place-holding, thus wasting his longer frame and explosiveness.

UF's front 7
WDE: J. Cunningham 6’3 250
NT: Lawrence Marsh 6’3 305
DT: T. Sanders 6’2 300
SDE: Carlos Dunlap 6’6 290
Will: A.J. Jones 6’1 225
Mike: Brandon Spikes: 6’3 245
Sam: 6’0 230
So, once again, they’ve got the necessary SDE that makes the 43 work. We don’t. Their LBs are much smaller than USCs and what ours would be if the configuration I proposed was used. But, they’ve got a 300 LB DT and a 290 LB SDE.

Texas' front 7 (Will Muschamp is by far my favorite DC)
WDE: Brian Orakpo 6’4 260
NT: Roy Miller 6’2 300
DT: Lamarr Houston 6’2 275
SDE: 6’3 265
Will: R.Muckelroy 6’2 230
Mike: Sergio Kindle (but he’s often used as a 2nd WDE in passing situations) 6’4 239
Sam: Jared Norton 6’4 242 (played as much as Bobino if not more)
They’re actually kinda small along the front. Muschamp more than likely wants to increase the size to what he had at Auburn in 04/05. But Muschamp’s greatest strength is secondary schemes and he’s mastered coaching and scheming with 2 SS/FS hybrids.
