The article discusses Bowden's fear of death. His dad died shortly after retirement. His idol (Bear Bryant) dies shortly after retiring.

You see, it's almost impossible for Bobby to go out on his own terms because his own terms are not to go out at all.

But as I've said before, I firmly believe he is done at FSU. Bowden has simply burned too many bridges and pissed on his greatest allies.

Is there a heaven for a G?

Seriously though, that’s kind of sad.

John Wooden just turned 99 last week, so maybe there is hope for Bobby.

Hope u are right

Don’t think i could handle another season of wasted opportunity. With how good our offense turned out. If we had any bit of a defense, this would be a fun season.

I have read over and over that BB is religious and has a strong faith. If that is so then he should not be afraid to die. If he has done right in his life he will be richly rewarded. Makes me wonder about BB. I think he is using that as an excuse to keep going past his prime.

by Noles93 on Oct 20, 2009 8:08 AM EDT reply actions

Bianchi makes you question

Bowden’s faith? Wow you really are disconnected from the FSU program. Bowden needs to call it quits, but to question the man’s faith and claim he is afraid to die is way off. I didn’t slam Bowden, fire away……………..

by NoleAmerica on Oct 20, 2009 9:09 AM EDT up reply actions

We're not just looking to slam Bowden at every opportunity

But really, NoleAmerica, do his actions over the last 8 years make you think he’s a good person? I’m just not seeing it.

by DKfromVA on Oct 20, 2009 9:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Good Person - Yes

Good Coach – No. I honestly think the man just feels he can turn it around, too bad for us and him he is 80 years old and no longer has that ability. Anyone that has met or even knows him would not question his feelings for FSU and what he has created, he is a very proud man. He just doesn’t want to leave the program in a down state, unfortunately for him, that is what he will end up doing. Sad turn of events for both him and FSU.

by NoleAmerica on Oct 20, 2009 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions

We disagree on him being a good person, then

Several people here have met him and would disagree with you as well. His spiteful and self-interested decisions over the past 8 years lead me to believe that he is not a good person. If you want to believe that he’s a saint, fine, but facts and actions indicate otherwise.

>>---l>

by DKfromVA on Oct 20, 2009 12:03 PM EDT up reply actions

No Saint

nobody is. I am assuming that most fans on this site and others are against him b/c of not winning; fair enough. Losing 5 in a row to the gators doesn’t help. I can also guess the hire of JB is another. It was a huge mistake on his part as well as the schools. Other hires he has made are not a lot different than in everyday life; people generally hire those close to them or those they have a comfort level with. That doesn’t make him a bad person, it makes him a human that makes mistakes and maybe makes him a bad head coach. We agree he is not the man who is going to turn this thing around and I have heard enough to believe he is going to move on after this year. Contrary to what others might think he is not looking to bring FSU down when he leaves. Those people do not know anything about the man in my opinion. The sad thing to me at least is once he is gone, we might not ever hear from him again. Losing him from the FSU family will be very costly to the program in the long run. If Jimbo fails, others will look at how Bowden was treated and think twice before taking the job. By the way, I don’t think Jimbo is a bad hire, given a solid D-Cord like K. Smart; and things could bet rolling in the right way as soon as next year.

by NoleAmerica on Oct 20, 2009 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions

My view of him as a person has nothing to do with winning

-Bobby Bowden hired his incompetent son at OC rather than conduct a search for the best

-Upon doing this, Bobby threatened to leave when told this was nepotism to get his way

-Bobby consistently denied Jeff was the problem and went into a maniacal pouting craze when he was removed

-Bobby no longer recruits or participates in game plans

-Bobby would like to hire Amato as DC and/or to bring Terry back to coach

-Bobby has approached the boosters about buying out Jimbo

-Bobby does nothing to deal with the strife within his own coaching staff resulting in physical fights in front of players

-Bobby knows he won’t be forced out by his buddy TK at president or TK’s lap dog Spetman at AD, so he continues to make his demands known
Bobby Bowden: "What do I have to gain from resigning?"
Bobby Bowden: "I will tell Florida State University when I am leaving."
These actions are what I judge him by. Self-interest, me, me, me. This is why I am not confident that he is actually a good person.

Bianchi had nothing to do with it. I have wondered about this for some time. Having complete and total faith you accept dying as a part of life.

by Noles93 on Oct 20, 2009 9:31 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

I myself dont question the mans faith, but it is a fair question.

I am leery of death, but I don’t fear it. I have been raised to believe something better awaits me when I leave this world. That said, I don’t preach the Bible anywhere near as often as Bobby, I dont base so much of my public persona on my religion. For a man seems to have such a staunch belief in the afterlife to be so afraid of dying, that is a it odd. I happen to think there is a bit of conflicting testimony there. If Bobby truly believes he has lived a life following in the steps of his savior, he would realize he has heaven to look forward to. If he is afraid to die, either he knows something we dont, or he isnt really a believer after all.

by Miaminole on Oct 20, 2009 9:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Humor

I think that is just his attempt at deflecting difficult questions. How many times have you heard him or others his age talk about after retirement the only major event left is death? I don’t think these people fear death, but it is something that most, even the most faithful don’t desire.

by NoleAmerica on Oct 20, 2009 11:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Then they are not truly faithful!

Only only people who should be scared of him dying, is his family and friends, unless Bobby knows something we don’t know?

by Noletorious on Oct 20, 2009 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Why would you want to retire (or die)...

when you’ve been living in heaven on earth as the BMOC at FSU and in Tallahassee (maybe even the state of Florida for that matter); getting paid millions of dollars to ride around in a golf cart; checking out swooning college chicks who treat you like a rock star and want your autograph at every turn. That’s my idea of heaven too! :)

by Renegade_NOL3 on Oct 20, 2009 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Wow...

Just jump right on in there and attack the man’s faith. I sure am glad you know exactly where his heart is, because just from looking at him and watching what he does and how he carries himself, I would be moved to think that he is exactly what he claims to be. A completely devoted Christian. From all the stories I’ve heard ex-players tell about how he was the main figure in there lives that helped them get everything turned around and back on the right path, I was almost thinking he could be the genuine article/One of the good ones. We sure are lucky to have you here to make sure we know that all that is just a cover-up for what he really is. I mean, I must have been so blind to think that anyone who has lost the ability to be a great football coach could in any way possible still be a Christian. How stupid of me to not know that the two go hand in hand. Everyone knows that if for some reason someone expresses a fear of dieing then of course they are a hypocrite. For that matter lets just go ahead and say anyone who fears anything is a hypocrite, right?
This reply is mainly all in fun, but really, have we stooped so low that we are now attacking the man’s faith because he sucks as a head football coach?

by BhamSeminole on Oct 20, 2009 11:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe the title is misleading

Maybe BB relates retirement to dying and he is not ready to die. Who is? I certainly am not ready to die but am not afraid of it.

by Noles93 on Oct 20, 2009 9:51 AM EDT reply actions

Interestingly

those guys who want $$ for info have a teaser suggests that Bobby may be looking to coach elsewhere in 2010. In essence if Bowden is fearful of retiring and is forced out after 2010 or sooner (the Fisher contract being negotiated is probably going to force that, if the current one doesn’t in effect do that with its $5 million guarantee), it is Bowden’s option to go elsewhere.

At this point in his career, I could see that happening. Likely at some small school in Alabama, his home state.

Ironically, Terry Bowden’s North Alabama team just moved up to #1 in the rankings for Division II football. If that success (assuming it continues), Terry could get offers from Division I schools, creating an opening at UNA, as soon as after this season. Could Bobby move to Florence, AL?

by Wild@Heart Nole on Oct 20, 2009 9:54 AM EDT reply actions

with, not if

didn’t proofread before hitting “post”.

Just to add, a smaller Bobby Bowden led school could become a mecca of coaches “rehabilitating” their career or keeping active waiting for another opportunity. Probably get assistants normally over the head of such programs.

by Wild@Heart Nole on Oct 20, 2009 9:58 AM EDT up reply actions

Only if UNA is thinking about moving up to D1, FBS...

He wants that record I think even more than the money. ..

Coaching DII wouldn't help him in his battle with JoPa.

He would need to go to FIU or somewhere in FL where he hopes he would be able to draw in talent that school would not normally get in order to win.

by SWFLNole. on Oct 20, 2009 10:13 AM EDT up reply actions

that option

depends on UAB’s goals. I don’t think Bowden is a match for them.

Additionally, the UAB Board of Regents is shared with Alabama. They are unlikely to approve a deal that might cause the program to overshadow the Tide in any way. Jimbo Fisher actually had a deal in place with UAB before the BoR stopped it. Too big a name is the story of why.

by Wild@Heart Nole on Oct 20, 2009 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions

I can't honestly see someone hiring him...

Unless as a publicity stunt, but at this point I don’t think he’d be that big a draw, he doesn’t coach anymore so he’s not turning around a program, he’s not going to coach for peanuts even if it is keeping him alive he’ll still “demand” a fair salary, and I doubt he’s putting together a great staff knowing they’ll be doing all the work and getting paid much much less, though i suppose if he gets Amato to come along…

If he wants to keep coaching, he can go to UNA with Terry and be a grad asst along side Jeffrey.

by karmanole on Oct 20, 2009 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Or...

was it that at the time Nick Saban had not hired an offensive coordinator and was aiming for Fisher to be the next bama OC. Couldnt let UAB get in the way of that possibility so they ended it before it could begin for UAB.

by BhamSeminole on Oct 20, 2009 11:25 PM EDT up reply actions

that is another story

that went around the ‘Bama blogs and newspapers. A third was that Fisher negotiated a deal that cost more than the Board of Regents was willing to approve for a “second tier” football school in the state. Beside Fisher’s compensation, I seemed to recall he had negotiated some other budget items like assistants’ salaries as a part of the deal. The total price tag might have raised objections.

My Thoughts on Bowden

I’m all about saying the meanest, nastiest s**t about this man until he takes a stance. Until he finally gives in and spills his heart, with TRUTH, about his current situation, I am going to say mean s**t. I don’t know how else to get these extremely stubborn man to come out of the closet and tell us what he really feels, and I just can’t accept that the absolute malarchy that has been coming out of his mouth has any sort of truth.

Great - now our coaches not only have to recruit for him, game plan for him,

watch film for him, run practice for him, make pre-game speeches for him
but they also have to actually keep him alive too?

thats a lot to ask

A bit clever I suppose

But it seems like this article was written to help him play the age card………..I mean if we equate not renewing his contract to send him to the chair how can we not side with him?

Plus it makes the anti bowden ers look like a-holess in the eyes of the casual fan.

I can't judge him for that. I try to keep faith but am afraid of death as well.

"I'm falling apart, I'm barely breathing, With a broken heart thats still beating, In the pain is the healing, in Your Name I find meaning, So I'm holdin' on.. holdin' on to you."

by FSUvaFan on Oct 20, 2009 8:37 PM EDT reply actions

Copy that

I think this goes for most people who know God. I know where I’m going, and I know it will be perfect, but I would like to do everything that God has planned for me here first.

I think we need to be very careful with this topic, especially questioning someone’s faith in God because they are not ready to die.

Also, due to the nature of media, I’m sure we don’t get his full thoughts on the issue. It could be that he feels it is still his calling to reach young men for Christ, and he may feel that FSU football is the only way for him to do that.

by PBD on Oct 21, 2009 8:00 AM EDT up reply actions

Fair enough

All I was saying is that it was a fair question. This is a man that preaches the gospel to any and all who listen. While he may paid to be a coach, he is essentially a pastor based on his actions. At my church, if I asked my pastor if he was afraid of death, I doubt he would say he was. Those who preach as loudly as Bobby does should be aware should be aware that every action and soundbite will be scrutinized.

by Miaminole on Oct 21, 2009 9:35 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't disagree with you

I’m just saying that we should be VERY careful before travelling down this path, especially since we are all observing him from his actions and sound bites, vs. being a part of the program or privy to his daily discussions with others.

We could talk about this at least as long as we could talk about football, but in the end it doesn’t change anything.

I move that unless we really want to get into religion on this board, that we just drop the subject and leave Bobby’s personal religious views (right or wrong) alone.

by PBD on Oct 21, 2009 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions

See, I agree with you sort of

I dont know that we are getting into religion. I think there are folks on here questioning his faith, not the faith he says he believes in. I think there are also people who feel that pushing religion of any kind on players is wrong. So yeah, I dont know that anyone is attacking his views, more the sincerity. Either way…meh.
