yeah...our offense is pretty good too...

makes me think back to that comment earlier on the Sentinel about Fisher….something along the lines of “well if our offense was the top in the country”….

8th is pretty dang good.

This hurts really...

just think how good we could be if our defense was just Ok. Decent. Average.

Do you think Jimbo meant it when he said this defense wouldn’t be as bad as we think?

by jasonole59 on Oct 21, 2009 6:00 PM EDT reply actions

In all honesty

this defense isnt as bad as I thought it would be… Its much worse.

This should be an interesting game.

Great offense vs great defense
Horrible defense vs horrible offense

by TuscaloosaNole on Oct 21, 2009 7:06 PM EDT reply actions

Definitely strength against strength

I can’t continue to pretend I don’t care, even though this is a lost season. I hope we beat the living daylights out of UNC tomorrow night. If our offense is able to put up points against this great defense it’ll do wonders for those kids going forward. I can’t speak on the defense, I sincerely don’t know what to expect out of them . . . I mean you’ve gotta believe that we’ll keep CTC away from the headphones and huddles after the GT game . . . right?

Sorry, its just hard for me to not hope for the best. It breaks my heart to see Christian Ponder lose.

So, we have an unstoppable force meeting an inmovable object

and two of the worst units in football going at it. I say the horrid defense finds a way to crumble first.

by Jonathan Loesche on Oct 21, 2009 7:37 PM EDT reply actions

"defense wins championships" is a cliche.

We’ll see if defense wins Thursday night games, too.
We could’ve put 63 on GTech if our D was competent. Woulda Coulda.

Who has NC played?

I think their defense is good but not great. Our offense has been tested much harder then their defense.

Played GT

That’s pretty much been their only test. They did infinitely better than we did, holding them to 24. I think Uncensored had a stat in the preview that they held them to 60 something percent of what we did in yardage. It was also pointed out in the preview that they haven’t faced a good, balanced offense yet, so we’re not sure what exactly they’ll do. We can only say that they return 8 starters from an elite defense last year and played well against GT defensively.

i jst dont have faith in our D this season…no matter what offense we have gone up against they have looked like they had all-americans at all 11 offensive positions…we make bad offenses look great to often for me to take em thurs….I hope im wrong but the better D will win this game

by Fredric on Oct 21, 2009 10:21 PM EDT reply actions

I agree.

Good defenses will stop good offenses, but we’ve seen this year that even bad offenses will put up points against bad defenses (BC game).

I think our only chance will be a fast start on offense (what we didn’t get against BC).

by 38Noles on Oct 21, 2009 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Well Def win champ right and Offenses wins game.

Our Def is the reason we are not going to the ACCCG this year. But our Offense is why we will win some games. Also we have played some agenst some very good offenses. Our Def sucks yes but thats ok because they should at least stop UNC from scoring on every drive. and that all we need them to do. If we have to get in a shotout with at team its not going to be good for us. Our Offense is poten and will score our def just has to stop the other team so we can out score them.

can we scrap this cliche?

If it was entirely true then UNC would be in the running for the MNC, no?

It takes both.

From what I hear

from people at UNC is thatt they are super-over crunked about this game. There team will be pumped as a result. I expect CJ Yates to pull a M. Hagans Thursday night performance.

by revival on Oct 21, 2009 11:13 PM EDT reply actions

there =their

i don’t understand why they are pumped for a Thursday game. Perhaps because it is at night?

by revival on Oct 21, 2009 11:14 PM EDT up reply actions

FSU is still a big name team so I would guess that has something to do with it. Plus this will be a nationally televised game.

by evenflow58 on Oct 22, 2009 12:39 AM EDT up reply actions

recruiting for UNC.

This game helps UNC for recruiting in NC. If they beat us they can say the killed FSU dreams this year. They took out ECU next is duke and then NCST. They beat us and make them look like the best team out of the carolinas. They are compeating with Clem, USC, UVA, NCST, and WF for the top recruits form VA, NC, and SC. this game is a huge ice braker for them for that reason alone.

at night national tv a chance to gain recruiting advantages…like others have said schools still get super amped up to play FSU for some reason and give their best performance when they play us

I don’t know the exact record, but I saw someone post the stats before. The record isn’t that bad and is hardly conclusive.

I think I saw our record is 1 game over .500 all-time on Thursdays.

That said, how many times have we had an off week preceding a Thursday game? Wonder if that could change our expectations for a gross under-performance (as we have experienced in multiple years past). I’ll note that we didn’t look too bad against NC State last year (the offense, in particular), but don’t know if we had an off week or not.

by arrdub on Oct 22, 2009 9:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Confirmed - we did have an off week last year, between UM and Thurs PM vs. NCSU.

Maybe that suggests a solid performance tonight (according to our polarized off & def standards, of course).

by arrdub on Oct 22, 2009 9:54 AM EDT up reply actions

Recent Thurs outcomes.

2002 – no off-week – @ UL – 20-26 L (Monsoon game, home vs. Duke the preceding week)

2003 (NO THURS GAME)

2004 – no off-week – @ NCSU – 17-10 W (worst offensive game in NCAA history, 244 total yards for BOTH teams, home vs. Duke the preceding week)

2005 (NO THURS GAME)

2006 – off-week – @ NCSU – 20-24 L (Daniel Evans looks like Joe Montana)

2007 – no off-week – @ WFU – 21-24 L (Solid 1st half, X. Lee 2nd half melt-down)

2008 – off-week – @ NCSU – 26-17 W (TOP 38 mins vs. 21 mins)

Guess that was the Greg Jones running wild game?

Didn’t remember that being a Thursday night. (In pulling those, I was just looking at game dates that didn’t fall 7 days apart, so I would have missed that, if we did in fact play 2 in a row.)

by arrdub on Oct 22, 2009 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions

It isn't up to us

This is a conference game. The ACC picks when they happen.

Did unc have a short week?

if so we have a really good shot here………….

I dont like the matchup at all because a good D has a much easier time stopping a good O than a Bad D has stopping a bad O………

Just looking for some hope

they has just as much time but

They have to cover both 2TE and spread. Caz might be out but we have another TE that can fill the spot. As long as we dont go back to a FB I could care less.

What TE are you referring to?

I have yet to see anyone on our team that comes close to filling the shoes Kaz left.

I think he's saying Little will step in on those two TE sets

I think we’ll see a lot fewer of those, though. Our blocking ability from our TE’s just decreased dramatically.

The less 2 TE sets the better

see Im down with that

I dont think we will see the 2 TE sets but I would rather see them with bad blockers then with a FB blocking. Also I would like to see 5WR with a TE and/or RB out there as a WR.

Why is the sky blue? Because, God Loves the Infantry

by Desman on Oct 22, 2009 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Why would you not want 5 WRs in a 5 wide set?

None of our RBs or remaining TEs have proven (or had the chance to) catch the ball and get upfield.

I think Reliford is coming into his own...

perhaps a break out night for him….I know he is extremely raw and does not block, but i like him as a receiving threat!

Reed, Goodman, Fortson, Owens and Easterling

Reliford is not an experienced route runner and I can see him getting mixed up causing problems

With a RB in there and a TE teams would not send in a dime package

Also Reliford is fast enough to be a wR I think also. and Jones has a little speed to him too. we could put him in motion to leave the backfield or into the backfied. also Reliford and a RB could block better on screens or bubbles. Im all about new things. I could like seeing an empty backfield with 4WR and a TE too. run a bunch like with the TE on the inside and a slot on the other send the TE in motion and turn out the DE have the T and G double on the DT and releace to the LB there should only be one to work with then ponder has nothing but a S to deal with. If they line up in a nickle then just throw it. someone will beat the LB.

Good Points

I just get real unconfortable puting young guys out there in formations that they are not used to.
