Jimbo Fisher's Florida State Offense Saves Seminoles from Embarrassing Defensive Effort as FSU Storms Back to Beat UNC, 30-27
The 'Nole's offense has to be getting pretty tired of this. 34 points at home against Miami and lose. 54 points against BYU and the game never felt comfortable until midway through the 3rd quarter. 44 points and over 520 yards of offense against Georgia Tech in Tallahassee and yet another loss. Losses against excellent defenses in Boston College and South Florida in which Florida State's defense allowed 4 plays of 70+ yards to putrid offenses.
On Thursday night, Florida State traveled to face off against one of the finest defenses and worst offenses in the country. North Carolina's defense came into the game ranked 10th, their offense 99th. FSU's offense entered the game ranked 8th, their defense 101st. Florida State knew coming into the game that reaching 21 points would be a huge accomplishment against the ferocious North Carolina defense that features multiple future early NFL draft picks. It would be up to FSU's defense to make UNC's horrible offense look, well, horrible.
But in the back of their mind, Florida State had to know that their defense would be a colossal disappointment. UNC hadn't rushed for more than 4 yards per carry against anyone. Against Florida State, the Tar Heels averaged 6.7 yards per carry on 38 rushes, totaling 255 yards! Yes, the 'Noles allowed 70% more yards per carry to the Tar Heels than any other team. 6.7 yards allowed per carry is unacceptable for any defense, but for Florida State's defense, against this putrid offense? It would be up to Florida State's offense to again carry the defense; a seemingly impossible task against Carolina's defense.
Or so it seemed...
[click "continue reading". If you read this last night, click refresh because we added a lot of content.]
Florida State started slow. A drop and a rash of penalties hurt the 'Nole's offense early. It didn't help that North Carolina put the pressure on, marching 80 yards for a touchdown on their opening drive, something they had not done all season. The Tar Heel crowd was into it. Down 17-3 in the 2nd quarter, Bobby Bowden called for a field goal on 4th and 3. Florida State head coach in waiting/ Offensive Coordinator Jimbo Fisher looked disgusted. The 'Noles were down 17-6 going into the locker room at halftime.
Florida State would get the ball at half, however, and they went 3 and out. Carolina took the ball 45 yards on 6 plays for the touchdown.
At this point, it would be helpful to point out just how bad the FSU defense was, and you need to remember how terrible Carolina's offense is.
| UNC Offensive Performance | 1 | ||||
| Opponent | at UCONN | ECU | Gtech | UVA | Florida State |
| Opponent Defenisve Efficiency Ranking (Opponent Adjusted) | 54th | 98th | 60th | 27th | 101 |
| Plays | 67 | 63 | 44 | 59 | 68 |
| Yards Per Play | 4.1 | 6.9 | 3.5 | 2.9 | 4.9 |
| Rushes | 29 | 37 | 17 | 21 | 38 |
| Yards/ Rush | 2.4 | 4 | 1.4 | 2.3 | 6.7 |
| Passing Plays | 38 | 26 | 27 | 38 | 30 |
| Yards/ Pass Play | 5.4 | 11 | 5.9 | 3.3 | 2.7 |
- Yards-Per-Play is used because it is the best standard measure of defense. Total yards is moronic (please don't try to argue this, just use the search feature at right). It really isn't the fault of the defense if the offense allows the opponent to get 17 possessions or take the ball in UNC's red zone three times in a contest. How many snaps did you have, what did you do with them (or allow your opponent to do with theirs). Simple enough.
- Sacks have been re-allocated to Passing plays (since they are the result of a failed passing play and not a run play)
- FSU allowed 40% more yards per play to Carolina than Carolina had gained against any other ACC defense.
- FSU allowed 190% more per rush to Carolina than the Tar Heels had gained against any other ACC defense.
- Carolina's 24 points were more than double their best output of the year against an ACC team
- Carolina had yet to crack 175 total yards against any ACC defense. They not only cracked 175, but cracked 200, 225, 250, 275, 300, and 325! Carolina had 338 yards against Florida State!
- Carolina had 8 running plays of 15+ yards!
So FSU punted, Carolina scored, 24-6. The FSU's offense, averaging about 4.4 yards per play (which we will see in a minute was not terrible against Carolina), kicked it into another gear. It was a gear FSU fans have seen before against Miami and BYU and Georgia Tech, but many didn't think the 'Noles could shift into that gear on the road, down 18 points, with 25 minutes to play, against an elite defense. But they did.
Florida State began to pound the flats. They got into the Pistol and ran the ball with their zone blocking schemes. They made UNC make tackles in space. They did everything to negate UNC's great size. Amazingly, they repeatedly ran 5-man protections (no tight ends or backs blocking) and did very well with it. The line beautifully handled UNC's defensive line in pass protection and gave Ponder the time he needed to through all of his reads.
FSU took the ball and marched 76 yards on 14 plays for a touchdown. 24-13. The North Carolina's quarterback T.J. Yates got greedy and launched a ball for the endzone, not within 15 yards of his receiver. Florida State's Jamie Robinson caught it and was down at the 'Nole's own 3. It was like a punt, a very effective punt. Florida State then false started. Backed up on their own 2 yard line, FSU called a hitch-n-go to Rod Owens. Owens had killed UNC on the previous drive with short catches, and UNC corner Charles Brown bit on the play. From his end zone, Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder lofted a beautiful pass to Owens who avoided getting tripped up and raced 98 yards for the Florida State score. It tied for the longest pass pass in Florida State history, and the 'Noles were within 4 points, 24-20.
UNC's offense stalled on the next drive as FSU's defense finally made the Tar Heels offense look like what they are- garbage. An 11-play 54-yard march ensued, culminating in a field goal after tight end Beau Reliford misread a block and cut outside, when an inside cut on a beautifully designed and timely called tight end screen play would have netted 20+ yards.
At 24-23, UNC stopped passing entirely. They marched 78 yards on 10 plays, ALL RUNS, and foolishly settled for a field instead of going for 4th and inches at the Florida State 19 yard line. That stupidly conservative decision made it 27-23, but it would prove to be costly. The 'Nole's offense took over at their own 37 after a short kick. They calmly marched 63 yards on 4 plays for the touchdown, 30-27 'Noles.
The pressure was on UNC and they couldn't sustain a good drive, despite marching the ball from their own 29 to FSU's 46. A foolish punt went for a touchback, allowing Florida State to take over at their own 20. The 'Noles chewed the clock from 4:10 to 0:47 on 8 plays, including a brilliant QB sweep call that fooled the Tar Heel's defense.
The Heels took over with 0:47, no timeouts, and 79 yards needed for a score, 54 for a realistic chance at a field goal. They couldn't get it done. The Heel's strength tonight was their run game, and with 0:47 and no timeouts left, that wasn't going to work. Neither did play-action. They went only 17 yards on 8 plays to end the game.
It was a miraculous comeback for Florida State and the star was Christian Ponder. The Junior quarterback went 33-40 for 395 yards and 3 Touchdowns with zero interceptions. He was pinpoint and could have easily thrown for 450 yards had he not been victimized by 3 drops and an offensive pass interference call. Ponder might be the best quarterback in the country. You'd be hard-pressed to find one who is playing better. Considering the opponent and situation, Ponder's performance was one for the ages. He posted a QB rating of 190 (NFL equivalent of 133). Ponder finished the game 16-16 for 236 yards.
And while the receivers did have 3 drops, they also made some phenomenal catches and played extremely well. Senior Rod Owens, Ponder's former roommate, caught 9 balls for 198 yards. Bert Reed caught 9 for 79. In all, 8 different players caught balls.
Let's use a quick chart to put this in perspective. Just how good was FSU's performance? To find out, you must compare it to the other teams who played the Heels:
| Team v. UNC's Defense | at UCONN | ECU | at Gtech | UVA | Florida State |
| Rank of Offense | 49 | 62 | 2 | 56 | 8 |
| Plays | 61 | 61 | 77 | 68 | 65 |
| Yards Per Play Allowed | 3.2 | 4 | 5.2 | 3.8 | 6.7 |
| Rushes | 31 | 28 | 65 | 37 | 23 |
| Yards/ Rush Allowed | 3.3 | 2.6 | 5 | 3.7 | 2.3 |
| Passing Plays | 30 | 33 | 12 | 31 | 41 |
| Yards/ Pass Play Allowed | 3.1 | 5.3 | 6.9 | 3.8 | 9.2 |
- Yards-Per-Play is used because it is the best standard measure of defense. Total yards is moronic (please don't try to argue this, just use the search feature at right). It really isn't the fault of the defense if the offense allows the opponent to get 17 possessions or take the ball in UNC's red zone three times in a contest. How many snaps did you have, what did you do with them (or allow your opponent to do with theirs). Simple enough.
- Sacks have been re-allocated to Passing plays (since they are the result of a failed passing play and not a run play)
- Kneel-Downs are not included as they are not a competitive play.
- Carolina's defense hasn't allowed anyone to gain more than 5.2 yards per play. FSU put up 6.7 yards per play. Doesn't seem like much? Think again. Florida State gained 30% more yards per play than anyone else had on the Tar Heel's defense. And they did it in North Carolina, on a Thursday night.
- 1st team to crack 410 yards against UNC’s defense (438), and did it IN NORTH CAROLINA. Georgia Tech had 406, but they did it in Atlanta, and did it on 85 plays. FSU did it on 15 fewer plays. That's about 20% fewer snaps for FSU, but a lot more yards and as shown above, a lot more yards per play.
- 1st team to put 30 points on UNC’s defense and did it IN NORTH CAROLINA.
So yes, on a Thursday night, Florida State went into the house of one of the best defenses in the country, got down by 18 points by allowing one of the worst offenses in the nation to set season-highs. Then with UNC knowing they would have to pass, they did just that. And did it again and again and again. Florida State obliterated the even the worst numbers that Carolina's stellar defense had allowed all season. The 'Noles put up 30% more yards per play than anyone else had against the Tar Heels, and they did it in Chapel Hill, on a Thursday Night. The credit goes to Jimbo Fisher's halftime adjustments and Christian Ponder's once again excellent play.
Seminoles vs Tar Heels boxscore (Note, this isn't adjusted for sacks of kneeldowns, etc)
What did we learn?
If you don't think FSU is one of the best 5 offenses in the country, you need to wake up. Think a bit smarter and realize the opponent quality when you look at the production. FSU didn't get cupcakes this year.
- No offense has scored more points against Miami than FSU.
- Florida State's 54 points against BYU is 26 more than the next closest effort by any other team against the Cougars.
- Fisher's offense dropped 44 on Georgia Tech; no other team has even cracked 35 on the Jackets, and the one who cracked 30 was Mississippi State who did it in garbage time (31 points).
- And you saw the figures from above. FSU put up 30% more yards per play than anyone else did against UNC. And of course they set new season highs for points allowed and yards allowed by UNC.
Also, Ponder is a Heisman candidate. Seriously, is there a better QB right now? Tebow's not playing better. Neither is McCoy. I'll give you Claussen, maybe.
There aren't 20 defenses in the country worse than FSU. Literally, they belong outside the top 100. They are probably worse than even the most pessimistic of fans realize. Every team sets their season high against FSU's defense!
- Miami's season high for points, yards, and yards per play, against a D1 team? You guessed it, the 38 point effort @ Florida State
- BYU set their season high for yards per play (8.9) against... Florida State
- Clemson, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest held Boston College to 1.1, 2.9, and 5.4 yards per play, respectively. FSU allowed them 7.1 yards per play, again, a season high against D1 competition.
- USF's offense is horrible, ranked #94, and FSU allowed them to set their season high against D1 competition in yards per play at 6.0. What's worse is that USF ran the prevent offense in the 3rd quarter.
- And UNC, well, you saw the figures above. FSU's defense did do better than #99 ranked East Carolina, but then again, that's East Carolina.
l
What does this mean?
We'll discuss this more in-depth over the weekend, but realistically, not much. FSU is still in an uphill battle to win the ACC Atlantic, though they probably are heavily favored to make a bowl game.

Beside some poor play calling in the redzone Jimbo did alright.

My only disappointment with the offense
One more catch and Ponder would have had 400+…….unreal. The offense was unreal tonight…..do you realize the defense we played…..
Please Ponder do not leave for NFL at the end of the year
Is he going to be done with his MBA this year?FSU is not title bound next year. I highly doubt he could top the way he is performing this year or even sustain this performance. The question is one great year enough to impress scouts, at least enough to make it worth it to leave.
Ponder will not go anywhere no matter how well he does for the rest of the year.
>-----:----:------>Spear 'em then Scalp 'em
why do you say that?
I don’t disbeleive you, just curious….
A lot of NFL teams want a QB to be consistent over his whole college career...
Ponder wasn’t very good last year… and they could say “he is a one year wonder.”
Also, Ponder def. should stay because there are soooo many other QB’s that are coming out this year…. McCoy, Tebow, Bradford, Pike (from Cincy), Locker, and possibly Clausen…

Just me but I think Ponder is equal if not better than all of them
I think Ponder finally has the pieces in place to show that he is a great player overall.
Yes, but NFL scouts don't know about him...

I'd argue the elite step was taken against GT
Last night’s game just launched him higher and solidified his position among the nation’s best.
Mark Sanchez
He had one good season at USC and went top 5. Its doable. He’d have to blow up during individual workouts.
Let’s hope he loves college too much.

He could go and be drafted, but if he stays and performs at the same or better level, he could be a first round pick next year.
Plus I think he knows he is still a year away and Jimbo will help him get better prepared. There is a big diff between first and 2nd or 3rd round money and signing bonus, plus he is well grounded and his father David will probably discourage him from leaving this year.
Not that I would blame him if he did leave, it will be tough to stay knowing your defense blows and you probably won’t play for the NC.
>-----:----:------>Spear 'em then Scalp 'em
Bill Parcells for example will not draft a player who did not play for 3 years and
there are a lot of NFL GM’s who agree with this logic. There are exceptions, like Mark Sanchez, who get drafted with less than 2 years exp., but they are the exception to the norm. They might draft him in the later rounds, but we are talking millions of dollars if he has a half way decent senior year.
>-----:----:------>Spear 'em then Scalp 'em
Ponder
Top 2 QB’s picked last year (Stafford and Sanchez) were underclassmen. If they do well this year it would generate more buzz for Ponder if he continues performing at this level. One negative would be his lack of being under center but there aren’t many QB’s these days who play under center (which made Stafford and Sanchez appealing). But his size, speed, intelligence and decisiveness throwing the football is pretty impressive.
Tebow has no chance of playing QB in the NFL. I personally don’t think McCoy or Bradford will do well either. Just my opinion.
I hope you are right Frank
If the Bowden fiasco goes into next year, why would he want to come back.
That and very little chance of competing for a NC are the negatives.
>-----:----:------>Spear 'em then Scalp 'em
I think the guy has all the tools, all the intangibles, and is extremely intelligent football player
He has NFL QB written all over him to me. And NFL teams will realize that he finally has had good tutelage and is now coming into his own.
Heather Dinich was wrong on her UNC predictions, her best case and worse case scenarios had UNC beating FSU, oh well.

Do you realize that Ponder...
has had a career high passing game each week since the start of this season. Next game he should break the 400 yard passing mark
400 yds and 7 touchdowns on homecoming.
We still lose, book it
In the preview I said Ponder was going to light up UNC like they haven't been lit up in a couple of years.
Then I said we would win 35-21. Unless someone was closer, I award me the Shiny Award.

Wonder how many people watched the game
I hope some of the kids we want were watching. I can understand defensive players not wanting to sign, but Green should be drooling over playing in our offense.
Defense should want to come ...
They know the offense will have their backs … (won’t have to singlehandily win games like they have had to do for the end of the C. Rix era and the Weatherford era).
Will step in immediately …
Jimbo Fisher will get us a good defense staff …

UF's offense is looking real ordinary right now...
They get the job done, but if I had to choose between Bama or UF’s offense right now, I go with Bama. If I had to choose a defense , I’d still go with Bama…

Yeah because
We know the offense has had no responsibility for any losses this year..right.
The offense did not come alive until the second half, and the defense also did better the second half.
The defense, while one of FSU’s worst, still kept them in the Jacksonville State and USF games. The offense also had some troubles in the BC game.
i dont know if you’re joking or not… i’m just going to believe that you are in fact joking and that there are none such people like you in this world
Chuck Amato does not joke

Unfortunately, this is one of our frequent misled posters
We have tried to develop teaching methods for him including these things called “statistics,” but he has yet to catch on. Still working on it, though.
>>---l>
No
The defense was not good, but they did enough late in this game. And I was not joking about the offense being patially to blame for other losses. You have to think back to how the offense did not adjust in the USF game the way they have this game.
So because the offense didn't dominate USF
They are the problem. I don’t even know where to start here. Do you look at statistical rankings? I’m assuming not. Because if you did, you’d find we were the 8th best offense in America headed into this game. And guess what? After this game, that ranking will be even higher!
>>---l>
you’re right in only one aspect, the offense did not win us the USF game, very true… but every loss and even this win and the BYU win was not won because of the defense.
EVERY SINGLE WIN is because of our offense, every one. I throw out the Jax St game which you will blast me for, but short turn around and FSU didn’t want to play that game.
The only problem in the USF game
was that Ponder was banged up. He couldn’t scramble.
Really that is the ONLY reason we managed 7 points? The offense does deserve blame for that one game.
I jumped on the Jimbo hate train early in third quarter against UNC because they were mimicking the USF game. Though I admit I got the on the train too early. Overall the offense has done well.
Well?
We’re averaging over 420 yds a game. We have had some fumble problems (see USF, JSU) but those aren’t on the OC.
Miami: 404
JSU: 402
BYU: 512
USF: 288
BC: 411
GT: 539
UNC: 438
I’ll take that offense ALL DAY.
Okay you know what
This is what TN has taught me.
My response to this post is this:
If Jimbo sucks so hard, who would you prefer? Dont just complain, present a solution that isnt retarded.
2nd half defense
The D went from God awful to just bad. In the 2nd half we still gave up a lot of runs, were out of position and did a poor job of tackling. We just managed to stop them a couple inches short a time or two and Butch followed that up with dumb calls to punt.

I can't figure this one out
Some of the plays the linebackers looked wayyyyy out of position. Other times it looked like maybe they were in the right position and expecting the DE to make sure he had contain. I sure miss EB right now.
That one FB throw was inexcusable. That guy should have gotten lit up.

what one game-breaking skill position player would send this offense into stratosphere mode in your opinion?
WR?
TE?
RB?
H-Back?

He is going to HATE film review of this game.
I was a little scared running backs might get scared to come
but the pass heavy offenses of the past has never hurt recruiting. I am sure the coaches always tell the guys, if I only had you, I would run the ball all the time!
We had to pass a lot because we were down by 18 in the 3rd quarter...

Even early in games when the team is not down, I have seen little running. Thankfully Fisher mixed it in late to keep the D honest..and the runs worked. Remember the team ran well last year, and given the chance can run this year.
When they tried to run early on
they were stuffed.
wasn’t it -14 yards rushing (probably with a sack in there) in the first half?
Well, their D-line is better than our O-line... it's as simple as that...
We gave ponder just enough time to do his job… but we couldn’t out muscle them in the run game…

Though the receivers still have too many drops.
We need to get a tennis ball machine and launch tennis balls at the all day.

BRING ON THE DEFENSIVE COACHES
Even with an average defense next year, this team could rival some of our best EVER
BB's PC on ESPNEWS
He gave credit to Jimbo for the playcalling and said something along the lines that he wishes he could get credit for it.
I am pleasantly surprised with this team.
We could have easily rolled over when it was 24-6, but once again the offense comes through. I love CP, he is becoming one of my favorite Noles of all time. If we had a defense he would be top 5 for the heisman trophy right now. I can’t believe our d let UNC move the ball the way they did, their offense is pathetic. Jacobbi played a very good game tonight, probably his best this year. Why the hell were we rushing to get the ball snapped on the last punt? That could have caused a disaster.
ponder
Ponder has come into his own as a great quarteback, which is hard to disagree with. Heisman hopefull possibly with a WHOLE team around him. Next year if we cleanse the defensive coaching problems, and make a complete team once again. Ponder ’10 heisman most likely a candidate.
Can only think what chris Rix would have been like if he had not been coached by, well if he had been coached by Jimbo. I real offensive and quarterback coach. How good could the noles have been this past decade.

Heh
No mention of Patrick’s lost pick-6? That was such a great grab (and a great toss by the UNC RB).
SEC suspended their refs over bad calls
Why review the play if they can’t get the right call, idiots. Seemed like they were trying to give the game to UNC, like the refs did UF/Arky.
worst call ever
I firmly believe that the refs did not know how to handle the play since the whistle was blown. They didnt know what to do so they just called it incomplete. Terrible. A 2 year old could see the ball never touched the grass.
Even if the rules don’t allow us to get the ball there (I know the NFL ones do, not sure about college) the ref should have at least explained that to us.
As it is, he said the call stood when the video clearly showed it never hit the ground.
Heres the best i can find in the rulebook provided online
Live Ball Becomes Dead
ARTICLE 2. a. A live ball becomes a dead ball as provided in the rules or
when an official sounds his whistle (even though inadvertently) or otherwise
signals the ball dead (A.R. 4-2-1-II and A.R. 4-2-4-I).
b. If an official sounds his whistle inadvertently or otherwise signals the
ball dead during a down (Rules 4-1-3-k and m):
1. When the ball is in player possession, then the team in possession
may elect to put the ball in play where declared dead or replay the
down.
2. When the ball is loose from a fumble, backward pass or illegal pass,
then the team in possession may elect to put the ball in play where
possession was lost or replay the down.
3. During a legal forward pass or a free or scrimmage kick, then the ball
is returned to the previous spot and the down replayed.
4. After Team B gains possession on the try or during an extra period,
then the try is over or the extra-period possession series is ended.
Thus, based on sections one and two of the above text, i believe we should have had the ball put in play at the spot of the foul (as P.Rob was the one in possession of the ball as the whistle occurred).
i just watched that video of the INT
How can you possibly blow a call like that with video review?
Why in the hell doesn’t the media say “that was a blown call” All ESPN says is “It was ruled incomplete”
If noone ever talks about the blown calls in the national media the refs will never be held accountable and the problem will never be remedied.
Sorry for the rant it just pisses me off that it is possible to blow a call like that, a crucial game changing call, with an available video review.
There are only two possible ways it can happen:
A) CHEATING
2) Someone in the review booth was smoking crack with LT
D) CHEATING
This shit need to stop or college football will be as credible as the WWF

I'm pretty sure we should have gotten the ball where it was intercepted
Had UNC come back and won those officials would have been suspended. Maybe they could make a living in MLB.
You can’t advance the ball on that play if it’s ruled a drop.
based on the rule you posted, i agree
it seems you should spot it either where the ball was intercepted, or figure out where prob was when the whistle was blowing….
terrible call, made worse by the premature whistle. fsu should send the tape to the acc
Props to CP
UNC #1 pass defense nationally 125 ypg.
CP 395 yards!!!!!!!!
UNC plays 11th hardest schedule
Gators have #2 rated pass defense and play 8th hardest schedule.
I find it hard to believe...
that UF can have the 8th hardest schedule. Do they only look at wins and losses? What about ranked opponents? What about playing at home eight times?
by treemeister on Oct 23, 2009 10:12 AM EDT up reply actions
SOS Criteria
I think they weigh mostly winning percentage of opponents. I’m not sure if they weigh the opponents strength of schedule on top of it. They do not weigh home or away games. The NCAA is one of the most corrupt organizations in the country perhaps the gators payed them to prop up their ranking.
77TH by this measure
Strength of Schedule (SOS) is calculated as the likelihood that an elite team would win every game on the given team’s schedule. New This Week: SOS is calculated only from games already played, and does not include future games scheduled.

watch the sidelines during the game. whenever anyone makes a play he’s the first guy to run over and congratulate them
His clapping kinda reminded me of a Gator chomp....
I was shocked and repulsed, but glad to see his enthusiasm..!
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three.
Elayne Boosler
Much needed energy
At times he may need to learn to control himslef a little, but I think Nigel Carr brings much needed energy to the defense, he flies all over the field and is always around the ball. I would rather have a player with his emotion out there than someone going through the motions.
I wasn't a fan.
Go out and actually make a play first. Stop wasting energy on stupidity and risking a penalty.
Probably his first start (I believe) had something to do with it.

Whats wrong with Ty Jones? I havent seen him on any injury reports, he didnt have a carry tonite.

Formation
From what I understood we changed the depth chart because of the spread formations we were running. I thought Jimbo implied that we would be running spread and “pony” or “ponies” formation with the backs, which is why we went to the smaller quicker backs.
Did anybody hear Bobby say.....
Jimbo knows when he’e going to retire!
Open Records
Considering the case with the NCAA that favored open records. Perhaps we can classify the exchange between BB and Fisher as an official record exchange with an entity of
The State of Florida. Then we can get the actual date/news :)
yeah i was just going to post that.
i went to a qb rating calculator and it gave me the 190. i went to yahoo to cross reference against past performance and it seemed ridiculously high.
Turns out yahoo uses the NFL formula.
155.8 on the season
if you take away the USF game it jumps to 160.4
Did anyone hear JP trying to compare Ponders stats in wins and losses?
It was completely ridiculous…it was like a difference of 10 qb rating points 25 passing yards and 10 rushing yards.
Also his magical stat of Ponder getting 29 net rushing yards gets us a win. He might be the most annoying guy on ESPN
Let's give Old School some love too!
9rec. 199yds. for Rod Owens. Talk about stepping up.
Also the Oline did a hellava job in the 2nd half.
Great to see a senior step up!
And also great to see someone break a tackle and not fall down. That 98 yard catch & run was incredible.
that was offensive pass interference

One of the best ways to beat a defense
is make them gameplan for everybody.
Leading recievers:
Miami- goodman (82yds) reed (63)
Jax st- goodman (80) Caz (78)
BYU- Fortson (62) Caz (38)
USF- Reed (114) goodman (45)
BC- Reed (107) goodman (105)
GT- Easterling (104) Fortson (77)
NC- Owens (199) Reed (74)
We’ve had 6 different receivers play a big part in our passing attack. Thats got to be hard on opposing defensive coordinators. Instead of having to gameplan for 1 or 2 big name guys, they have to watch film of our entire corps.
Marcus White...
Well, congrats on getting your first sack this year! I congratulate him, but I wish he would step up more… first sack on the last play of the game…

That was a good time to do it though.

It's also one of the easiest ways to get a sack.
When a QB is dancing like that, it’s begging for a sack. It’s time for White to step it up.

My thoughts
Im a bad fan. I gave up 1/2 throw the 2nd Qrd and downloaded FF1 for my wii. I fliped between both untell the 4th Qrd when I went back to the game. I cant watch our Def anymore. Last night they bashed our Def back in the 90s this would never happen MA would just sit back and watch them kill people. And what hurts it its so damn true.
Anyhow Offense, All I can say is CLAP………Clap….Clap..Clap,Clap,clap.
Was a slow start but once JF found what worked Im glad they stuck with it. JF hasnt given up, I prob. would have. Ponder should be a hiesman but I dont see it because hes in the ACC and we have only 3 wins total.
The Def all I can say is just keep swimming, just keep swimming, just keep swimming. Fire CTC now please, MA just keep trying, please dont fold and give up. Maybe if I click my heels 2 times this nightmare on Def will be over. Damn didnt work. We have the talent but its like everone is out there doing there own thing and not a team thing. Maybe its just me.
ST at least its better than last year. We need to brake one and cover better.

I really wish I knew who he spoke to that gives him that confidence. Oh man, to believe that he is walking away with that fervor…ohhhh yeah that would be nice.
Someone should ask Weatherford if he still thinks he's better than Ponder
What a dumbass.
Jimbo’s plays are awesome. I love when you see us run a set twice where the ball goes the same way, then on the third time, we go somewhere completely different. I think there was one play vs B.C. that he was setting up the entire game that went for a big gain. He knows exactly how to make adjustments. It’s no secret that teams have been stacking the box on us for years. Tonight, it was extremely evident in the first half. I remember one series where they definitely had 9 guys in there. The swings and dumps to the outside really opened up the field.
The long pass play was no fluke. The entire game my brother was screaming for us to take a shot on a double move. They were biting so hard on our initial cuts to make sure they gave up no yards after the catch, that it was bound to happen. It was so obvious, even Brad and JP were commenting almost every play on how they were on us as soon as the ball got there.
I really have no problem with us not running the ball. If teams are going to give us the pass…which they clearly have all year, then so be it. A lot of our ineptitude in the first half were costly penalties and dropped passes. We’re not as reliant on the run to open up the pass as other teams. It seems like everyone we play is super intent on stopping the run which doesn’t really make sense to me. How long before you see teams sitting back us and respecting the pass more and worrying less about the run? It’s pretty clear that Ponder can handle almost any defense thrown at him.
by Weasie on Oct 23, 2009 8:44 AM EDT reply actions 1 recs
UNC shut down the short outs... very well
But they left the middle of the field wide open and were subject to the long ball. A Jeff Bowden offense would have kept pounding the same thing… only to have UNC shut it down. This offense, with Ponder at QB made the appropriate adjustments and it showed.
Postgame with Jimbo
Question: Do you think he’ll (Ponder) start to get more due in the national press?
Jimbo: That’s on ya’ll, not me. Hey, there are some great ones out there. I know. But I wouldn’t trade ours for anybody in America. Period. I wouldn’t trade him for anybody in America.
CP7, Please do not go Pro
But I must have my warchant poster questions answered
A: Why does Jimbo panic?
2: Why don’t we run more when we pass for 400 yards?
D: Why are our defensive guys always out of position? Must be inexperience, right?
>>---l>
Whiskey Charlie answers...
A. He’s clearly not cut out for the HC job. We need John Gruden, Art Shell, or Tony Dungy. Have you watched Tony Dungy on ESPN?? That guy is full of insight! Wow… wish we could get him.
2. Because our line can’t block. Trickett is all talk. Sure, look good standing there motionless after an offsides call, but can’t bust our amazing backs loose for 1st down.
D. Because Bowden has to spend his time fixing problems on Offense, so he hasn’t had the chance to correct a few position errors over on the D. But they’ll work themselves out. Always do.
Speaking of Trickett,
Did anyone else notice Trickett and Fisher correcting or instructing the running backs (specifically Thomas) after a play? Coach Carter was in the background looking on… nodding his head passively…
oh well.
I feel bad for the guy
Its not his fault he has no idea how to run in that type of offense

What are the chances he goes pro after this year?
What would you say?
70%-30%
80%-20%
in favor of staying. Just trying to put a number on it.
Something that may have gone unnoticed:
http://nolesports.tallahassee.com/article/20091023/FSU03/91023001/FSU+DT+Mincey+returns
Mincey unselfishly came back from injury and played in last night’s game instead of sitting out this season so that he could play the entire year next year.
Also, although UNC racked up a ton of rushing yards, they did it with a lot of trick plays and unconventional type runs. That’s not an excuse for the defense, but the good news is they didn’t just cram it down our throats.
The bad news is that OC’s have clearly caught on how to take advantage of an already bad defense – run the ball on the edges. Our players are fast, but they overpursue and are so poorly coached that they don’t know how to shed blocks or keep from getting caught in traffic.
Props to Mincey
Granted, we don’t how the decision was made and who made it, but it was good to see him out there. We desperately need big bodies up front and he is amongst the biggest we have. Plus, he is experienced and I remember he really came on last year (and played very well against UF). This can only help, but I must admit that I woke up this morning with visions of Russell Wilson shredding our defense …
From CanesRessurection
I actually let my wife turn it to Nip/Tuck during the 3rd quarter. The score was 24-6, I figured it was over. After the show, I turned back to find the score 27-23 with about 6 minutes left. Great ending to the game, but I thought they would score on the last drive. After the blown interception call, I said that’s gonna cost ‘em. The D actually looked like an FSU defense in the 4th quarter. Maybe this will get y’all pointed back in the right direction.

Speaking of blown calls (PRob's pick), did anyone else think that Ponder's arm was moving forward, with the ball still in his hand, on the sack/fumble.
I can’t believe it was not reviewed and I can’t believe we did not use our challenge.
This is another reason why I am not convinced Jimbo is the right man for the job. (jk for those who don’t know better)
But really, someone needed to step up and think about calling for the challenge. If only we had a HC instead of a CEO to make the call.
>-----:----:------>Spear 'em then Scalp 'em
All jokes aside, we got some really, really bad calls in that game
Ponder’s fumble (should have been incomplete pass) led to 7 for UNC and the missed interception for TD by PRob should have given us 7.
New score 37-20.
Actually, the ball went forward
and hit our OLman right in the back.
He arm had transitioned from being cocked, to moving forward.
I played it about 50 times, at which point my wife yelled at me…..apparently, she didn’t care too much.
A Rant
Associated Press
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Christian Ponder knew Florida State’s offense was good enough to get the Seminoles back in the game, even against one of the nation’s top defenses.
Now maybe Bobby Bowden’s critics will back off for a while….
That right there told me all I needed to know about the rest of the season.
I swear, just between Favaro, Jesus Christ Football Star, the Yankees and BB the sports media lives for a good slurp fest.

Didn’t you see him on the sidelines last night, right in the thick of it with the headphones on the entire game?
I mean he showed last night in front of a National audience that he still can coach a team to victory. I mean his headset was on and his mouth was moving and he even yelled at an official. Not once did that magic hankey come out, I say bring him back for another 5 years.
In all honesty that show he put on last night made me absolutely disgusted with the man. It is clear he is looking for sympathy and unfortunately his selfishness is not apparent to the average spectator.

I’m curious, does Bowden and his PR firm review the game tapes on Monday morning to point out the things he is doing wrong and needs to improve on?
He did tell Gene after the game that he raised hell at halftime
(at the coaches that is)
…for what it’s worth :)
As usual
Great breakdown this week Uncensored on the game and afterthoughts. Ponder is a beast for sure. Thank God I didn’t turn my tv off at halftime.
Last night was great
If they win the rest of their games, I hope they do but they won’t, it won’t change my mind one bit on what has to happen.
Take the keys from dad before he hurts others or himself…
I LOVE IT
I just took a quick peek at many of the other ACC blogs (That TN so kindly links) and there is very little talk of CP7 and the great QB is turning out to be.
I wonder how many teams will over look him? This is got to help our chances???
It will not help our chances
Coaches do not read blogs in preperation of games.
CP7, Please do not go Pro
You are right, they spend many hours studying game film
but I don’t hear many coaches talking about him either, maybe just not reported.

I am pretty sure every coach's priority going into a game vs FSU is to stop #7
YOU DO THAT YOU WIN
CP7, Please do not go Pro
Of course not
Because most of the morons have spent over a year trash talking the kid.
