Postgame euphoria and anger: Jimbo unplugged after UNC win
From Corey Clark's blog here are a couple of highlights from Jimbo Fishers post game interview. I think you might agree that some of his comments show who really cares about this team the most and who is practically in charge of this team.
Question: Even though he didn’t score on the two-point conversion because of the hold, running that guy over …
Jimbo: With that guy, it doesn’t matter. Because he wants to win. He puts his heart and his soul on the line for it. And the guys started following him in the second half and started putting theirs on the line. You know what I mean? Bert Reed went out and took some shots in the back. Rod Owens took some shots in the back. Those guys went across the middle. If you’re going to play championship-level football, that’s football. This isn’t easy. This isn’t a foo-foo game. This isn’t croquet. I mean that’s the way you’ve got to play it. And it’s going to take that. And you’ve got to do it. And it’s got be that next week and next week and next week. That’s the way it is.
Question: You guys appeared pretty much dead at halftime. Honestly.
Jimbo: We did. It looked like we weren’t coached. We couldn’t line up on the 4-yard line and get a formation. Then we call a time out, which is ridiculous. And they don’t give it to us. I mean that’s asinine. Then we throw a jail-break screen for 80 yards (actually 60, but who’s counting?) and they call a hold. And they had no idea that was a screen, which is ridiculous. It’s like the four missed ones up at B.C. No one calls (the referees) out, but I will. That was ridiculous (Did he mention it was ridiculous?).
Question: Mentally how did you prepare yourself for the second half?
Jimbo: I was hot. And North Carolina’s a good football team. Don’t get me wrong. They’ve got players. They’re big and strong. But it was us in the first half not doing things. And we had a little come-to-Jesus meeting. And it was fire and brimstone. And sometimes you’ve got to reach down in you. And I was hot. I ain’t gonna lie. Because I know we are a much better team and we’ve got much better character than we showed. And in the second half, it did.

I wonder if Jimbo will be reprimanded or fined for calling out the officials.

Ya know...
I honestly feel like we’ve gotten some bum calls in every game this year. Usually they’ll even themselves out over the course of the game but I don’t see that this year. I know I’m bias but I feel like we’ve gotten the majority of the bad calls in every game with the exception being the BYU game. I just hope the trend does not continue, its hard enough to win with our defense!

Jimbo: That’s on ya’ll, not me. Hey, there are some great ones out there. I know. But I wouldn’t trade ours for anybody in America. Period. I wouldn’t trade him for anybody in America.
You damn right.

And Ponder's fumble was apparently reviewed and ruled a fumble instead of a forward pass.

Regarding the officiating, here is what is revealed, and the link.
According to Steve Ellis at the Democrat;
It was reviewed
Did you wonder why Christian Ponder’s fumble, which led to UNC’s second touchdown, wasn’t reviewed?
It was by the ACC officials working the game. It was quickly ruled that Ponder’s arm was not moving forward when he was he hit, and thus the call stood.

seriously
I think i might be in love with Jimbo. THAT is exactly what I want to see in a press conference. FIRE! He didnt blame his kids or anything like that.
Wow, that was only a few questions, but what an interview.
On a sadder note, who wouldve thought I would already be worried about missing CP? People called me crazy last year when I said he was gonna be fine once he had time to throw. I never imagined this good. It is so sad that his talent is being wasted this year. Oh man, he has a chance to be special…real special.

Don't Worry...
We’ll be in great shape with EJ too. I wish things would lighten up a bit in a few of these games so he can get some reps, but he has all the goods to be a great QB too, especially under coach fisher. I also think we’ll get CP back again next year. I’m more worried about getting some defense for next year than missing Ponder.

Exactly.
THAT is exactly what I want to see in a press conference. FIRE!
Not laughing about a loss and saying crap like 50% of the teams lost last Saturday. And he had the FIRE you mentioned after a win.

Jimbo Fisher simply knows how to coach
It can’t be overstated how good this guy is. Because as talented and intelligent as Ponder is, I guarantee you he wouldn’t be performing this way under Jeff Bowden. In fact he’d be splitting snaps with EJ (both would probably be somewhere between mediocre and decent). Ponder’s numbers are “Campus Legendesque” on NCAA Football. That kid was on target with 37 of his 40 passes last night. 16-16 for 236 yards down the stretch.
What’s more exciting is seeing the rest of the skill players on offense take on his attitude and style of play. Nobody on that field was afraid to take a hit yesterday. Thomas ran with attitude, Chris Thompson showed some fight after first contact and our receivers went across the middle to take some blows as Jimbo stated.
last but not least: JARMON FORTSON IS A RIDICULOUS ATHLETE!! Even though that play was called back, that was the first time I’ve seen him really get out into space and run at full speed. Nobody was trying to get in front of that freight train.

Glad he calls out the refs
I wonder why more coaches do not tell the truth rather than sugar coat it? I don’t buy into “its making excuses” theory and Fisher apparently does not either. Are coaches scared the refs are going to remember their comments and penalize them in the future? If that happened then the coach could just send film to the boss over those officials.

Conferences usually crack down on that ala the SEC and Lane Kiffen. Plus it doesn’t look good when you blame the officials. It looks like you are passing the buck. There is complaining but it’s done in the form of a letter to the league offices, not through the press.

They said I was crazy too
When I compared Ponder to McCoy and Bradford. I have been trying to tell people for 2 and a half years there was a large number of LSU people who wanted Fisher and not Lester. It may take another year or two to prove FSU got the best deal but they did.

As I recall...
As I recall, people said I had drank too much of the Kool AId. When I brought up that I would prefer Ponder over McCoy and Bradford. It’s like I’ve said before … Ponder can do something each of the others can’t – extend plays/drives with his legs.
Once we add a power running game (Smiley) next year. Look Out!

LOL
I remember that too! Hell I felt it was possible, but I simply had to “wait and see”. It is hilarious to read that now because FSU got BLASTED for saying that. Here we are now lol.

I was one of the skeptics Doc, although I dont remember specifically calling you crazy.
I was wrong and I apologize.

Happens.
Eh, it happens…
But I’m really interesting in is us adding a Smiley. Think about this offense as explosive as it is with:
1. An efficient and competent QB who can extend plays, (And a backup in EJ who can do the same so you don’t have to completely alter your system when he comes in)
2. Multiple quality receivers to spread the field – rather than one who just one guy that defenses can key off of
3. Offensive line that has discipline and continuity as they should return most this year (Credit Trickett’s style on that one)
4. Multitude of formations to be able to get quick stuff hit stuff (Screens, reverses, pistol for downhill running, and an option game to)
5. Kicker w/ a leg who w/ a maturity should be more consistent each year (Again more points on the board when we get stymied)
6. An offensive coordinator is a teacher (Demanding, exact & gets players to understand the building blocks of what wins) and recruiter (knows what works in the system he wants rather than recruiting off a list)
7. Multiple backs who can catch and have a little bit of a burst (Thompson, Thomas, Pryor, Jones) .. To be honest I think Reid would be one of our best backs, but that would only be if he would on that side of the ball full-time (a la the move that sent Dunn from CB to RB) but thats another story. For now get him on the field any way you can – If its DB so be it.
Really we lack one element: A power running game – The ability to just pound people if you want/need for short yardage, etc. and also set up play action. Add that and you have tremendous balance to be able to beat people in different ways. It reminds me of LSU when Saban was there and Jimbo was offensive coordinator – On offense you had multiple, multiple ways to probe & attack.
We’ll have bumps and bruises along the way … But slooowly, but surely.
Excitement abounds… Kool Aid anyone?

Try and remember
Ponder was a fill in for Jeff and the boys. We would have probably had a walk on behind center now if he had listened to BB and stayed around.

At least there is some question on that offensive PI call..I sure didn't understand it.
even my wife said “isn’t that what he’s supposed to do…block”?
by jasonole59 on Oct 24, 2009 4:15 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I don't think
you can “block” when the ball is in the air. That’s PI. It looked like he started “blocking” before the ball was even thrown. I don’t think there’s any debate it was a penalty. Easterling was just a second or two too quick.
by tricknole on Oct 25, 2009 5:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'd also like to add
that I can’t think of any penalties we had that shouldn’t have been penalties. I wasn’t able to get home in time to see the Ponder “fumble” live so I didn’t get the benefit of all those replays. But I don’t recall any rulings really going against us, either.
Maybe someone can inform me?
