Arguing with Gator Fans

Yes I know it is lame to argue on Facebook but I couldn’t resist.  But it just goes to show that most fans root for their team with blind passion and are unable to look past what the media tells them and accept statistical analysis.

I am sure there are just as many Nole fans as Gator fans that fail to see the big picture.  It also goes to show that females should stay out of sports debates all together.

Enjoy.

ESPN says teabow is better so he must be better. We don’t have statistics classes at UF…

It’s hard trying to prove any of these points to non-serious college football fans. I have trouble explaining it to Noles that still think teabag is such a good QB. The truth is you “can” use statistics to sway in your favor. The problem is the last few weeks I haven’t found a single one to “sway” them in teabags favor other then running yards.

Thats the thing people are using to say Tebow is better. They say Tebow is a proven winner and he is willing his team to victory. I’m not saying that is an accurate assessment of things but that is how “elite” writers and broadcasters can justify Tebow being better.

"Reporter: What will you tell the team at halftime Bobby?
Bobby: I'll tell 'em what I always tell 'em when were winning. Boys if they don't score we'll win this game"

by fsugrizz on Oct 29, 2009 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions

the argument

Teabow a winner yes. He is on a winning team. After the last few games it has been the FU D that has been winning their games. I’m not sure how a QB can get the D to play better; but if anyone finds out please tell CP7. Also the whole debate is what QB is better not TEAM. If we had their D with our O; I could only imagine.

Whoa there soldier....

Im not here to defend Tebow in any way…and as a matter of fact if Ponder was the qb at UF that team wouldn’t even be questioned as the absolute best team in the nation, and FSU wouldn’t be in the running to make a bowl game with Tim as our qb. CP7 has proven he is on of the nations absolute bests and its a shame that there is even a remote comparision. CP7 is better in every way this season as far as being a quarterback. If we were to compare how they stack up as a fullback I’d say Ponder is faster but lacks the extra 35 pounds to play that postion…(as does Pryor)

you're proving my argument

We are not comparing them as Full Backs we are comparing them as QBs. Which is most likly why at the next level you might see CP7 line up as QB and Te^bag line up as something else. This is what the gators do not understand. “WHO IS THE BEST QB” not “who is the best FB”, " who is on the best team"

There's a Bible verse about this.

There are a bunch, but is this the one you're thinking about?

Proverbs 9:7-9 (NIV)

 7 "Whoever corrects a mocker invites insult;
whoever rebukes a wicked man incurs abuse.

 8 Do not rebuke a mocker or he will hate you;
rebuke a wise man and he will love you.

 9 Instruct a wise man and he will be wiser still;
teach a righteous man and he will add to his learning.

Last week...

A friend of my wife’s who is a UF grad deleted me from her facebook friends because of a similar argument. We were arguing Ponder v. Tebow and I laid out all the facts. We were arguing over whether UF’s lackluster offense could score any reasonable number on Alabama’s defense. I told her to be objective and not blindly support her team. After the UF-Miss St. game I went back to gloat on her page and she had deleted me.

For the people who say Tebow is a winner

I really am excited about when he makes it to the NFL. When his team doesnt magically begin to walk on water, I want to see what he is then…“surrounded by inferior talent that wont let him excel”….

by Miaminole on Nov 1, 2009 9:24 AM EST reply actions

Right...

I more realistically expect Tebow to be able to blow into a tube to magically control his wheelchair after believing he can get away with diving headfirst on every play against NFL level talent. No. I don’t wish that on anyone. But, somebody had better coach him properly or else they’ll be watering him 3x a day like a veggie.

I don't even think

Urban Meyer or Tebow himself expect that he’ll be able to play in the NFL. Maybe he can make it as a fullback? Vinny testeverde anyone?

Recent addition

“National Championships: Tebow (2) Ponder (0) Heismans: Tebow (1) Ponder (0)
Those are the only stats that matter. Oh, and the fact that Tebow may very well go down as one of the best college football players ever whereas Ponder most likely won’t even get into the NFL and if he does his career will be like Akili Smith’s.”

I have zero energy to try and debate this clown.

by RaysnNoles on Nov 2, 2009 2:57 PM EST reply actions

You want stats?

Total touchdowns (you know, points. The things that win games): Ponder 15, Tebow 18.

2009 QB Rating: Ponder 151.16, Tebow 153.68

Yards per attempt: Ponder 8.26, Tebow 8.65

There’s a few more I could quote, but the real reason why you think Ponder is a better QB, and the reason why he leads Tebow in most stats is this:

UF #6 Nationally in rushing offense. FSU #76. Tebow doesn’t throw because he doesn’t have to. Ponder throws constantly because there’s no rushing attack, and he has the worst “Big Three” defense in a generation or two. To Ponder’s credit, he has performed very well in his post as the only FSU player standing between your program and absolute irrelevancy.

This doesn’t prove Ponder is a better QB, this year or overall. This year, UF hasn’t asked Tebow to win games. It’s not like he’s fallen on his face (150+ rating), they just aren’t utilizing him the same way.

If you want stats, look at 2007, where Tebow’s stats blow Ponder’s away (50+ touchdowns, for starters). Did Tebow forget how to do that stuff? Of course not, he’s been saddled with an awful OC and injury.

Ponder is a great QB, and if the Heisman were an “MVP” vote, he would certainly deserve a trip to NYC. That, alone, doesn’t make him a better QB than Tebow. If those numbers you posted by themselves make Ponder a better QB, why isn’t Case Keenum considered the greatest player of all time? He has a similar team to Ponder, but he puts up exponentially better stats, and with fewer losses.

by Giant Catfish on Nov 3, 2009 3:26 PM EST reply actions

2007 is irrelevant

Ponder is a better QB this year, he has done much more with much less. Your arguments are very weak and if you would like me to break down your failed logic I will.

Did you not read the above post and linked article or was it too difficult of a concept to grasp. Quit trolling and go back to justifying player’s eye gouging opponents.

CP7, Please do not go Pro

by RaysnNoles on Nov 3, 2009 4:02 PM EST up reply actions

I never justified eye-gouging.

I just said I don’t care. 2007 is relevant because it proved that Tebow can put up monster numbers in necessary. He just hasn’t had to. If you can’t see the relevance of that idea, I’m not sure it’s possible to have a discussion.

by Giant Catfish on Nov 3, 2009 4:37 PM EST up reply actions

WOW

That is some terrible logic. Do you honestly beleieve he is settling for field goals in the red zone instead of hitting open receivers or finding lanes, breaking tackles and rushing for touchdowns.

Do you really beleives that since he has an ELITE defense he doesn’t have to step up his game and put some points on the board. Your reasoning does not promote Tebow but disgraces him.

Fantastic Job!

Tebow walks on water, Ponder swims.........plus espn sez Tebow is the truth, and did you see that video of his speech?

They should make a movie about it or something, and then he could be all like “I DONT WANT (dramatic pause) YOUR LIFE” They could totally get that Dawson guy to play him hes dreamy

Well, gosh, it's a weight off of everybody. I think everybody that is an FSU fan or a coach or a player, this takes a weight off the shoulder. But what does that mean? Seven more days of peace?

by stevegrizzle on Nov 3, 2009 5:12 PM EST up reply actions

Tebow

is the only thing standing between UF and irrelevancy. Ponder isn’t perfect, but damn! I don’t see any other QB anywhere who could perform as well if you put him on a team with no running game and no defense. The other side knows you are going to pass every down and you don’t have any receivers with blazing speed.

As far as the head to head statistics you’re referring to. . . put a big asterisk by them stating that 1/2 Tebow’s stats were acquired while playing high school teams.
