FSU's Mickey Andrews: Homecoming Parade Grand Marshal
Love him or not, all FSU fans should be very grateful and thankful that Mickey decided to come back these last 2 years, otherwise we all know what the alternative was going to be.
While our defensive effort this year is at a all time low, Coach Andrews is still one of the few defensive coaches that genuinely care about FSU. He is probably most responsible for our 2 National Championships and our unprecedented 15 year run of national dominance.
Mickey Andrews plans to retire at the end of this season as FSU's defensive coordinator after 26 seasons.
That means Andrews, who prefers sweat pants and a coaches' shirt, must dress up with a sports jacket on this not-so-casual Friday. Then there is the matter of the parade taking away from game preparation. Friday afternoons are an important part of Andrews' final work for Saturday games. FSU hosts North Carolina State on Halloween.
"He was honored but he just wasn't sure he could take the time," Diane Andrews said. "'I have so much to do and dah, dah, dah'. He works. He comes home on Friday night and works. Last week, he got up at 2 in the morning, picked his briefcase and went to the table and worked."
"Florida State is so special for us," Diane Andrews said. "I hate like the dickens that it is coming down to this with Mickey leaving. I hate it worse than anything. We've been here 26 years. These people have been with us through all kinds of things, these tragedies (including the death of son Ronnie two years ago).
"We have friends from one end of this state to the other. It just means everything. It's really important to us."
Coach Andrews, as a NOLE who was here before you arrived and watched you build our defense into the intimidating machine many programs today are still compared to,
I JUST WANT TO THANK YOU FOR YOUR YEARS OF DEDICATION TO FSU FOOTBALL.
There is no such thing as gratitude unexpressed. If it is unexpressed, it is plain, old-fashioned ingratitude. ~Robert Brault

Mickey...
TY TY TY! If you read TN, I want you to know that we thank you for your sacrifices for this program. You could have left and became a head coach like Scott or Richt, but you stayed and kept us great. We will never forget you…

No, the respect for Mickey hasn't waivered...
There has been criticism of the defense, and the rest of the defensive staff primarily because Bobby hasnt allowed the necessary changes.

Listen, that is why this is the best Nole site around.
While some people may feel one way, and others may feel another way, everyone pretty much has a right to express their opinion, and as long as they abide by the community rules they won’t get banned.
If you re-read my opening 4 words, I addressed to this all Noles. Some may agree with it and some may not, but I think most of us appreciate his loyality to Saint Bowden and the program. At the same time I think most of us realize the offensive game has passed him by and since we don’t have the playmakers we once had due to our oft-discussed recruiting woes, many of us feel his time is up and we are glad it is his decision to leave to spend time with his grandkids, and that he is not acting like Bowden where we have to pry his hands off the door frame as we push him out door for the betterment of the program.
So I don’t really understand what your point is.
So what if some people were bashing him a couple of weeks ago, and so what if people bash him in the coming weeks. It is your right to agree with them or disagree, but please don’t make uninformed generalized statements about the 1,615 Tomahawk Nation members or you will continue to look foolish.

I don't know anyone that doesn't respect what Mickey has done at FSU...
I think more people are just ready to usher out the Bowden era and get some new blood and philosophies in place more than anything; I also think a lot of the criticism is aimed more towards the half-ass coaching of Amato and Allen.
Personally I respect MA more than I do Bowden, heck MA’s D’s helped win BB’s titles and tons of wins, and then his D’s did their best to cover for the JB offensive era.
You know also during the JB years I never heard MA bash JB or the Offense for just plain sucking, he stood faithful by BB’s side probably biting his tongue the whole time, I’m sure he wanted to punch JB’s lights out and kick him in the nads all at once, personally wish he would have.
+1
There is nothing dishonorable in getting older and not being able to adapt to the current market or industry. The man has wanted to retire.
In contrast, there is something very dishonorable in making bad choices for an organization for selfish reasons, delegating to the point you lose touch with your employees, then making excuses, distorting the facts, and attacking those who complain about the inevitable failure.
Thank you Mickey
Without you, I believe that FSU would still be fighting for that first NC. Your defenses of the 90’s and even of the early decade were some of the most exciting displays of football I have ever seen in my life. I remember 93, when I got the chance to see all the games at Doak that year with my family.
It wasn’t until the 9th game of the season that the total combined points put up against our defense exceeded the number of points our defense put up against our opponents offense!
I only regret that you weren’t allowed to retire when you wanted to, so that you could close out an unmatched career on a higher note. Thank you

Florida State Football will never accept falling in the bottom half
It's ridiculous
That Mickey got up at 2 AM to prepare for the UNC disaster. He has to be frustrated beyond measure with the product he is putting out. This is a situation where FSU fans owe it to him to turn a blind eye to the current product and look at his career as a whole. Maybe we should name him honorary head coach for a day before he retires and place a bronze statue of him standing next to Bobby after he retires.
OH YEAAHH!

I respect the heck out of a man who can get up at 2 a.m. after having a season like this and press on.
Cheers to Mickey!

In the memorable words of the great Ali G
“MUCH RESPECT”
Mickey, you are one of the greatest DC of all times! Hell, the spread offense some would argue was created to defeat your potent defenses!
I hope you enjoy your retirement, and you will always be remembered as one of the greatest!
Is it me or is this the first time I've read that MA is confirming he is retiring?
Seems up to this point it’s just been rumored, I don’t think I ever heard MA say that he was definitely leaving, only a probably, maybe, most likely.
Not that it really matters MA is the best coach we’ve had on staff in the past 25 years or at least my favorite coach.
I think it is kinda like Jimbo saying he has not discussed or has been presented a contract, because his agent is probably working out the details behing the scenes (hopefully). Notice the wording says Mickey "plans to retire."
Ambiguity at it’s finest, just like in Fisher’s case (again hopefully).
I don’t think there is any doubt at all he his history after the season ends, but you are right that nothing “official” has been released.
Maybe someone with a subscription should check on Warchant. jk
>-----:----:------>Spear 'em then Scalp 'em
I noticed that, too.
And got excited that they pretty much said, “He’ll be gone after this year.”
…not that I don’t have respect for the guy, but like you said, this is the first time I’ve seen this in writing.
pumped.
The fact that his wife says it too, that makes it official!
Though I’ll whip out the credit card and head over to Warchant to find out for sure, though I’ll have to wade thru a bunch of BB ass-kissing fluff pieces to find out I’m sure
Lot of respect
For a guy who can go through such a personal tragedy and still come to work everyday for the past 2 years. One thing you can never say about Andrews is that he is a guy who just cashes a paycheck like some of our coaching staff. The game and strategies might have passed him by, but his passion has always been there. I tip my glass to you Mickey and will miss your pissed off expressions and constant yelling that has dominated the sideline for so long. Well played career Mickey…well played.
For someone who doesn't know...
Can anyone fill me in on what would have suposedly have happened if Mickey didn’t come back for these last two years, I’m just curious

Supposedly
Bobby Bowden would have promoted Chuck Amato to DC.
We would have a clown as defensive coordinator, because Bobby always takes care of his friends.
Just FYI
CTC=Chuck the Clown Amato
or the more PC
CTC=Chuck the Chest.
>-----:----:------>Spear 'em then Scalp 'em
Or Sideshow Chuck
can’t forget that one…..instant classic!
But he’s always worked to make people think he has dignity and class, and he doesn’t understand why FrankD won’t respect his authority and see that he is a class act.
Always have..
..and always will have the utmost respect for Mickey Andrews. He DOES care deeply about FSU. You can see it in his face in each game and each press conference. I know he’s just as frustrated as the fans are right now with the performance by our guys on the field. His legacy at FSU is just as large as Bowdens and I will always remember the overly dominant defenses he has put on the grid iron for years and the young guys he has put into the NFL.
For what its worth, thank you Mickey for your blood, sweat and tears you’ve poured into the program.
Just to clear up a little bit of a misconception..
When we attack the defense on TNation, we are NOT attacking Mickey Andrews. Mickey is actually Uncensored’s favorite coach. Mickey has never put himself above the program.
When we attack Bobby, we ARE attacking the personal choices he’s made over the past few years.
Also, we're not attacking players
umm, wait…..
We shouldn’t be attacking the players. Even Mangum, coached correctly, could be a contributor on the team.
Also
Anybody ever thought that Mangum looking so bad is a product of not only his subpar ability, but also the fact that he’s in the most failure-prone position in our defense? I mean we made an early draft choice, 4 year starter, and Rhodes Scholar look bad at times in that position.
>>---l>
If anyone was in line for the Head Coach job.....
it was Mickey and not Chuck Amato. This article by Mike Bianchi earlier this year really clued me in to what it’s been like for Mickey to be passed over time and time again for head coaching opportunities and then finally, ultimately, the FSU job, for which he waited 26 years. Did he complain? Did he become a distraction to the team or a problem among the staff? No, he just did his job like he always has. Considering his desire to retire and the death of his son, one can imagine that the intensity that once fueled Mickey Andrews is not where it once was, but this we can forgive. Every Seminole fan owes Mickey Andrews a debt of gratitude.
