Ann Bowden, wife of Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden, told the Orlando Sentinel her husband has been betrayed by the chairman of the school's board of trustees and other boosters as pressure builds on the Seminoles legend to retire amid the program's worst start since 1976.

"I am angry," Ann Bowden said Monday. "I'm angry at some of our boosters that Bobby has worked for and supported, raised money for. And he's been such a top quality person, such great character and everything for this university. And for them to turn their back on him like that – I don't care if he is 80 years old ..."

This is to be expected

It shows that we are a threat to them.

The arrogance and sense of entitlement of this family

is overwhelming.

You can just hear it in their voices “WE are FSU and everyone else can go to Hell.”

I’m getting to the point that I literally can’t wait for the whole lot to get out of Tallahassee!

Sure sounds like desperation.

Looking forward to the announcement.

Ann Bowden: Bobby betrayed as pressure builds at Florida State
He helped to build that booster program … and they used him. They used him and to me, that’s so disrespectful. It’s disrespectful to who he is, what he’s done and I think it’s very disrespectful of Jim Smith.

They used him? This family lives on a different planet. So the guy did his job, and you think he’s being disrespected?! How about 34 years of continued employment, 8 of which he spent playing golf and go-carting around practice for 2 and a half mil a year, a field named after him, and a big ass statue! Bowden family: it’s not disrespect, it’s called a job, and at some point we’ve got to take a look at the results. Disrespect….

by rfday53 on Oct 5, 2009 2:18 PM EDT reply actions

You know you people are crazy!!

Lets get it staight I do beleive it is time for Bobby to step down but lets not forget who built this school into what it is. There is a reason why he gets paid 2.5 millon dollars a year because he has made that school more money than they can ever dream of there is a reason why they can pay Jimbo that kinda of money his name is Bobby Bowden. How quickly everyone forgets. There is a better way of getting him to retire without trashing the man and his family.

by rllewis on Oct 5, 2009 5:52 PM EDT up reply actions

He built this program

Nobody is denying that. But just because he built it doesn’t mean he gets to tear it down. He’s paid 2.5 million dollars a year to do a job, and for 8 consecutive years, he has failed to do it. He has brought this program to its knees through his selfish and terrible decision making practices, and it is by far the best thing for the University if Bobby Bowden relinquishes his duties as FSU head football coach.

>>---l>

by DKfromVA on Oct 5, 2009 5:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

I do agree that he is not helping the program but what I am saying you dont have to trash the man to get this done. Lets not forget that during the past eight years the players havent exactly done anything to help through suspensions and off the field altercations. There is more to blame here than just Bobby and it starts with the players. How many times do you drop touchdown passes and get get stopped on the 1 yard line thats not Bobbys fault thats lack of effort. The team needs to make plays.

by rllewis on Oct 5, 2009 6:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think there has been a lack of effort over 8 years

I don’t think it’s the players fault that they haven’t “made plays.” I think it’s the coaches fault that we have not recruited well enough, developed talent properly, imposed the discipline that would limit these off the field incidents, or taken responsibility when things have gone wrong. We have had issues with attrition which weren’t entirely Bobby’s fault, but it becomes his fault when he skirts state nepotism laws to hire his son instead of the best possible candidate, and then becomes bitter when the university lets him go and attempts to suck the program dry of any and all life. No, Bobby Bowden needs to make the final play and step down to let the healing at FSU begin.

>>---l>

by DKfromVA on Oct 5, 2009 6:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Thats were we disagree

First these are not little kids if you cant catch a football that hits you in the hands that is lack of effort not the coaches some of these guys are top ratted recruits so I put on them. The coaches can show them, tell them, and let them watch film but they cant make them do it it takes heart and determination which I see lacking on FSU. But I do agree about Jeff terrible move by Bobby but I dont think he is trying to suck the life out of the program. I have been an fsu fan for along time and I remember when we were not that good and I watched as we rose to greatness and I hope to see it again. One thing is true as bad as I hate to say it Bobby does need to step down but we as fans need to be as greatful and as classy as he has been over the last 34 years.

by rllewis on Oct 5, 2009 6:30 PM EDT up reply actions

In the past few years Bobby hasn't been classy

And they haven’t been top flight recruits either, which we can also thank him for. I don’t think the coaches he hired (Amato, Allen, Mickey) are showing, telling, and watching film with the kids. I think Christian Ponder, Dekoda Watson, and Nigel Carr show a whole lot of heart every single game. It’s impressive that they’re able to do that with the amount of crap Bowden has brought upon them. I’m grateful for what he did to get us to 2001, but I am not at all grateful for what has transpired since then.

>>---l>

by DKfromVA on Oct 5, 2009 6:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Thats youre opinion

Well I respect youre opion even though I disagree I am sure the coaches are watching film with the team. And as for Ponder, Watson, Carr they do play with a lot of heart and effort but they do not make a whole team and thats what it takes. I wish we could get there opinons on this since they are the only ones that truly know what is going on.

How quickly everyone forgets. There is a better way of getting him to retire without trashing the man and his family.

Are you kidding?! Nobody has forgotten anything! Has he not been rewarded? Has he not been compensated? Has he not been shown more respect and received more recognition than any coach has EVER received in the history of high school, college, and pro football while still being actively employed as a head coach?! To suggest that he has not been adequately honored and appreciated is absolutley absurd.

Do you know who’s ‘forgotten?’ The Bowden family has forgotten that this is not about them. This is about student athletes who deserve the very best chance to succeed. This is about honoring the sacrafice of financial resources donated by thousands of FSU supporters who rightfully expect their donations to be used in the most responsible manner for the furtherment of athletic excellence. This is about preserving a proud legacy that Coach Bowden may have helped to build, but he DOES NOT own; that legacy belongs to all of us.

If you’re honestly supporting this selfish old man, it’s time for you to ask yourself some tough questions. Do you actually care about on the field excellence, the legacy of the program, our student athletes, and the pride of our team’s supporters? I understand having a genuine affection and heartfelt appreciation towards Coach Bowden, but he’s made his choices, he has created the imperative our university now faces. It’s an unfortunate decision, but it is a decision that Bobby himself has stubbornly and selfishly placed before us: do you choose Bowden or do you choose the program? There is no compromise, he hasn’t left room for one.

It figures that the Bowdens' would not go gracefully - what a shame that their selfishness

is turning this into a fiasco. But maybe it’s a good thing – it may make the decison to remove Bobby at year’s end that much easier.

It would be ideal that the Bowdens would leave with class – but that doesn’t appear to be the case.

Yeah, that's what I'm saying.

Don’t let it get to you. He’s digging his grave. We don’t want you around, Coach. Keep talking (or have your freaking wife and bum sons do it for you), and soon you’ll have no friends and no support. This is all up to him. We’re reaching the conclusion, with or without his graceful exit.

No one feels sorry because Bobby is old. Stop the victimization of your husband. He gets paid to perform and he has sucked. FSU doesn’t play with an age handicap. We win and lose like everyone else.

Having lived in Tally for many years

I have seen first hand Ann’s sense of entitlement. The Bowden’s have lived in a bubble for so long that they have forgotten that this is all a business. What about everything I did to support her husband and the disrespect it shows me to let the program decline like it has. Where is the respect for the money I paid for season tickets, for the merchandise I bought, for the money I spent traveling to Tally when I lived elsewhere?

I would say that paying his dues as a young man and working for next to nothing or for free when recruiting is more than compensated for over the last 10 years when he was paid handsomely without conditions or accountability. How much is he earning every afternoon while he naps. I’ll take that trade any day.

I’m all in favor of letting someone keep a job as long as they can perform at a reasonable level. By the standards that Bobby created, he hasn’t performed at a reasonable level in 10 years.

Is this how it will end

I guess we were all wrong about BB. He and his family have given FSU everything and asked for nearly nothing in return. Just like his good buddy Joe Paterno, who only takes a $500,000 a year salary from Penn State. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/bigten/2007-11-29-paterno-salary_N.htm

Oh wait, I forgot about the $2.5 million a year contract, compensation for endorsements, and the coaches shows, and all the other perks of the job. Nobody owes anyone, anything! BB has been well compensated over the years, and we have had mostly great teams. Everyone has been even.

This will get ugly because the Bowden’s think they deserve more money, and we are not getting a very good return on our investment.

but that assumes the loyalty is properly placed. Loyalty to family and friends is admirable but not at the expense of those paying your salary, co-workers, employees and other supporters. What part of this does the Bowden clan not get!?

All of his boys depend on Diddy for a future of luxury; they’ve shown they can’t accomplish much on their own.

I was told Bobby was talked into (by a family member?) heavily investing in many condos on the gulf. What do you think they’re worth now? And what does that does that mean to the Bowden family fortunes and future?

How is ANYONE at FSU Betraying the Bowden Family??

It was Bobby Bowden himself that stated 5 or 6 years ago that if he were to lose 4-5 games a year he would retire after a year or two. Well, for the past 5 years we have lost between 4-6 games, and this year will probaly be Year #6. WTF BB??? Thank You SOOO VERY MUCH for ALL the Wonderful years of sitting atop the College Football World, BUT the time has COME & LONG GONE!!!! Time to retire and move to my hometown (Panama City) and play golf everyday of the week. I will ALWAYS love what you DID for FSU but as of right now, its NOT about you!!! The thing I don’t understand is I distinctly remember her saying she wanted Bobby to quit before Jimbo was a gleam in TK’s eye. They did a big interview from the PC beach condo about 5 years ago and interviewed all the Bowden boys too. Now, someone else says they want him to quit and it is back-stabbing?
