Thanks for the recap

The only thing that would make this day more interesting is if Jeff Bowden comes out swinging.

It’s not likely, since he has North Greenville to prepare for this Thursday, but it would sure make me grin.

I seriously don’t think they did. I mean Bobby and Ann are probably somewhat blind sided by this. They go on their speaking tours and a bunch of people show up. Sure they hear random things here and there but they’ve heard it before and come out fine. So much is done on the eBay and they aren’t eBayers.

by evenflow58 on Oct 5, 2009 5:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Going to get ugly, but needs to get done.

Her “support” is probably going to make Bobby dig in even more. This is going to get ugly. The Bowden family seems to have a tough time dealing with the fact that this is about FSU football, not the Bowdens.

By the way, Jim Smith is a badass for standing up to this bullsh*t.

by tpamike on Oct 5, 2009 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I think she is trying to supprt but completely in the wrong way

The best support or advice she could give her husband is to tell him that the time has come to retire. That there is no shame in it. But if he struggles it will hurt him and his family name.

Sadly that is not what she is doing. Instead of being the sound of reason, she is just adding fuel to the fire. I wouldn’t bet my life on it, but I seriously doubt her role behind close doors is any different than what she is letting the public see.

by Miaminole on Oct 5, 2009 3:28 PM EDT reply actions

Still hoping for some sort of announcement about something from the University

What we have learned thus far today is that this is probably going to get ugly. The Bowden mafia is circling the wagons. There is a lot of smoke on imminent change, though, so a lot is going on behind closed doors as we speak. We can only hope the BOT and TK can keep Bowden from doing something subversive and crippling.

Just a comment about Tomahawk Nation

As a Gator fan I loathe FSU, that’s just the way it is. I’ve enjoyed the tumult and I agree that Bobby Bowden will dig in to make this whole thing as ugle and as painful as possible.

I do want to say that your blog is excellent and you’ve earned yourselves tons of capital here for calling it like it is. Warchant is a joke although I think they’re finally turning, too. I think TN is sort of becoming “Nole Central” on the web. Just look at how busy your comments are and how your site has become the best, up-to-the-second place for news. Anyway, stay strong through this difficult time and keep up the great work. I remember when this site was new. You’ve come a long way and you have a lot to be proud of.

Hee hee!

Well, we don’t necessarily want change. From afar, this soap opera is fascinating, and yet another downward season spiral of our hated rival is great fun to watch. Watching the BC loss on a bye week while we sit pretty at #1 is satisfying entertainment. I’m not sure I speak for all of us, but I think most of us are hoping Bobby sticks in there one way or another, although it is clear he is absolutely destroying the program and all common sense says that he must be removed.

Bobby is living in a land of delusion. The lackluster seasons aren’t even big news anymore in the college football world. No one expects anything exceptional out of the ’Noles and losing to BC or USF is nothing out of the ordinary. Man, if I were a Seminole fan I would absolutely loathe BB. The man redefines greed and selfishness.

Hang in there, though, you have a great blog to use a center rallying point and some of the best writers in the biz.

Orange and Blue Hue: The World through GATOR-colored Glasses -- http://www.orangeandbluehue.com

by Gatorpilot on Oct 5, 2009 8:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly

There is no expectation of anything above mediocrity. For years fans, national media, players, and even coaches have come to accept this downward spiral the program has been headed in. Each year that is got worse was another year people kept letting themselves demand less from FSU.

Fisher added some fresh ideas, energy, players, and has done everything to change the culture of the program within his power. Now even that isn’t working as he is battling to do so much to keep it all from crumbling. It appears that those with the power to effect change have waited until it is too late. Granted, it has to be done and doing it today is better than doing it tomorrow. But it will be hard to salvage a decent recruiting class this year. Nothing short of a miracle (and a whole lotta work from some present coaches and some new) will keep this class anywhere near the top 25 imo. I have no doubt difficulties will continue well into the year after.

I understand that you, as a gator fan, want Bobby to stick around. It is only natural. I hope Meyer takes a job at ND or is summoned back to Hell by Satan where he belongs. But the fact that a Gator can plainly see that Bowden, his family, and his cronies are ruining the program and Bowden is either blind to the situation or just doesn’t care, is just a sad state of affairs. Keep coming back to post!

This is sad man

As frustrating as it is watching your team crap the bed every week, build you up each season only to disappoint, and see a powerhouse fall miserably every year and do nothing about it, I cant help but feel for Bobby. Yea he shouldve retired years ago, and this season has to be his last, but Im surprised how everyone has completely turned on him. I guess it is the only road left to go down, but it just makes me sick. Wish we were a top 5 team and he left on top, but that obviously isnt the case and we have to stop the bleeding before were the “4th” team from the state of Florida…

Bobby's options

So he really can only:
-Retire at the end of the season, saving all dignity and going out with class
-Essentially be fired at the end of the season by not having a new contract offer
-Relinquish all responsibilities, decisions, and duties to Fisher, and Be just a person on the sidelines for 2010

Right or wrong?

No but,

some people are saying that this mess will kill the recruiting class. I’m saying that there is some good that will come out of this train wreck. I guarantee Jimbo telling a kid that his coaches are in place and not having to worry about when Bowden leaves will keep as many kids from de-committing. Plus, Tennessee showed that negative press isn’t always bad

by fsunick3 on Oct 5, 2009 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions

They had the coaches in place in time to recruit

FSU won’t be rid of Bowden until after. Who will be recruiting for FSU? Not Amato, Andrews, Haggins, Carter, Allen, or Buckley, or Bowden.

Plus, we’re not getting back the Early Entries we lost (Luc, Miller, Willis, etc).

I think there are huge reasons why 2010 recruiting is already screwed and why the coaching change won’t make it great. But it can salvage it and make it good instead of terrible.

Has nothing to do with cash. it has to do with timing and the damage already done.

Some more good quotes from Jim Smith today

Pretty much confirms what we have known, but it’s still good to hear
per the AP:
“We’ve got too many bosses out there,” Smith said.
“Jimbo is in a very, very tough situation where people assume he has a whole lot more authority than he really has,” Smith told The Associated Press. “He’s getting blamed for a lot of things that’s just not his fault.”

Full story here
http://www.abcnews.go.com/Sports/wireStory?id=8753850

“Everything is kind of up in the air,” Smith said Monday. “T.K. really has to make that call. I think he’s at a point where he’s going to deal with it.”

Smith said that arrangement has resulted in division among the Florida State staff, an accusation Seminole coaches have vehemently denied.
“I know coaches are sniping at each other and that’s just terrible,” Smith said Monday. “There are too many mixed signals.”
He also said fundraising has slowed significantly, and the school has an obligation to fans and alumni to be competitive.
“I take absolutely no pleasure in this,” Smith said. “I love Bobby Bowden, but I tell you what, I love FSU more.”

by hopnole23 on Oct 5, 2009 5:25 PM EDT reply actions

Honestly, we need to educate Seminole fans everywhere

reading through the media outlet comments, we have some VERY misinformed fans. One person even asked for Jimbo to be fired, and to let Mickey become the HC and Chuch the DC. How out of touch can people be??

Most FSU fans aren't that involved.

I’ve said before: I knew the program was off track, having been at Florida State during the Nepotism Era. Certainly I knew enough to hate Jeffy. But I had no idea how deep the rot went until plugging into TN and reading up on the last couple years of crap. And I’m a blog junkie, so if I had no idea, what’s the typical person going to know?

So is Coley going to be the new OC?

If so, what qualifies him for that very important position? I’m not all that familar with Coley, so I was just wondering.

by TRUSeminolez on Oct 5, 2009 5:37 PM EDT reply actions

He was OC at one of the Sun Belt schools in Florida

And Jimbo trusts him. Like Saban with Bama’s defense, I expect Jimbo to have a lot of input in the offense even when he is head coach.

by Pre on Oct 5, 2009 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions

From what I’ve been told Coley has an extremely sharp offensive mind (I’ve heard he might be better than Fisher). He recruits extremely well and also spends a ton of time at the office. Jimbo hired him away from FIU and he was immediately given the recruiting coordinator’s job along with being Fisher’s eyes and ears in the both. It’s very apparent that Fisher thinks highly of Coley. There’s very little doubt in my mind that he wouldn’t immediately be promoted and allowed to pick his assistants (with input from Fisher of course).

I have also been told Coley is a better offensive mind than Fisher

If I have one problem with Jimbo...

it’s his playcalling. I believe in a strong rushing attack and I’m still looking for one at FSU.

Well, I guess I’ll go check out Coley’s bio

by TRUSeminolez on Oct 5, 2009 5:45 PM EDT reply actions

Last year

We had the 2nd best rushing attack in the ACC…

I think the argument for not running this year is that if you get stopped on first down, you are now in 2nd in long. If you run on second and long—in an attempt to establish the run—you are now in 3rd and long if you get stopped.

Basically, odds are—with a running offense— there is going to be a 3rd down situation that is often less than ideal. With our crappy defense and high passing efficiency it is very clear that throwing is currently the best choice.

by Trus1te on Oct 5, 2009 7:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Regarding running on second and long....

I totally agree with the need for success on first down. That was in my prediction for this game against BC…we needed to have success on first down for our young team to develop confidence in itself that it could be successful.

Here is what I wrote last night:

In their first four games, FSU has had 52 plays that have been defined as second and long. They have run on 22 of those plays or 42% of the total.

FSU has had 8 plays of 9+ yards out of the 22.
5 plays of 5-6 yards.
5 plays for 1-3 yards
4 plays for 0 or less.

By those numbers on 13 out of 22 plays, FSU has been successful running the ball on 2nd and long. 60% of the time they have gained 5 or more yards on 2nd and long running the ball. They averaged 10 yards per play on those 11 plays.

During each game, only one play per game has gone for 0 yards or less on second down and long.

While second and long may not be a favorable down to run, we do ok in that situation. These are just a quick look at the numbers so they could be totally off.

Again, we need to establish success on first down. It could be through the run or pass.

Darkness everywhere, rain falling down like despair. We wonder how we got here. We press on though, driven by pride. On Sunday, the first rays of light broke the horizon. The rain has ceased. Dawn is still a little ways away, but it is coming. The approaching day fills us with hope. We are tired. We are weary. This journey has been long, and it not over yet. Yet, still we remain. The end of the season won't do it for me

I rather he quit now. The next best thing is tell him Fisher is in complete control and everything will be run through him. It would be simple to tell Bobby just make this last 2.5 million for standing there and not getting in the way, otherwise it won’t look good if we run you to the beach in the middle of the season.

I am wondering if some of this hasn’t been discussed as Ann with her alligator jaws mentioned that should stay out of coaching. That at least tells me Jimbo is now the assistant head coach in charge.

Coley I believe is the next oc

He broke down Fisher’s offense at LSU on film and game planned against other defenses with Fisher. He knows Fisher’s offense. Jimbo believes in his own offense so I doubt he is going out and getting a coach somewhere with an offense totally unlike his own.

He can turn Coley loose and tweak him once in awhile and maybe overrule a play here and there. It is a great opportunity for Coley and it will save money not having to go out and hire a big dollar type guy. The money can be spent on assistants and especially a defensive guru.

We hate how Bowden has become, yes, and desperately want him to leave

BB is acting selfishly right now, but there was a time where he was the greatest thing to happen to the program and football (imo) and was a fantastic human being.

We all poke fun and look upon BB and Anne with shock and judgement, but who’s to say you or I wouldn’t wind up being the same way after having our butts kissed, treated like royalty, and having such dominating success for a decade. It still doesn’t make it right though and I consider it a tragedy for us and him. Its a tragedy that this would have to be the way that change came about, but it is looking more and more inevitable.

Once all of this is said and done, when the fear of him staying and ruining the program is over, I imagine it will be a lot easier for everyone to sit back and put it all into perspective. BB has gained a lot from the program, yet he also built the program. I believe he did, and I don’t beleive its as easy as to say that he got lucky because other teams were on probation and so thats why we were good, its not that simple.

He is a good man that has gone sour… but can we not be civil through this period? He is not going to go down easily which is forcing us to blackout games and go against him outright, ok thats his choice and ours AND its a choice I want to make and will again and again, yet I still believe he deserves to go out with some shred of dignity even though he is not acting as though he deserves it… its … just the sad sad way things turn out, but, again, I believe he has done enough to buy him slack in the respect department… even in spite of himself.

And im guilty of not being civil as well.

From my point of view, and obviously I’m biased here, Bobby and his family are doing the most damage to themselves. Bobby used to hate to lose but it doesn’t look like he has that problem anymore. Bobby once said he would retire when the losses start to exceed 4 but that has gone by the wayside.

I can understand Bobby and Co being scared. My dad has worked for the same company for his entire life and my mom and I wonder what he’ll do when he retires. It throws your life upside down. It doesn’t excuse their actions but it might explain them.

Hold on a min. Let’s write down the coaches that would be upset with a player supporting the black out and then the coaches that know how to use facebook. Is there any overlap? I think not.

Don’t read too much into this. A lot of people on Facebook just approve everything they are sent because the interface is so overwhelming. Also some people are confused and think this is an official FSU blackout.

Cummings

supposedly cummings had a “surprisingly good” trip to SC. I hope we don’t miss out on him

Bobby is our Nero

Fiddling while Rome burns. Bowden is being shown the same respect he has shown FSU the past eight years. He forgot the customer is always right and you don’t call them play station all americans. If you do they don’t buy the product.

Statements like how would that be an advantage to me just emphasizes his over blown ego and lack of respect for FSU and the fan base. Hiring your retarded son to run the offense is not respect. Telling him to stay in the face of a fan mutiny is not respect. Forcing the university to fire him is not respect, squeezing another one half million out of the boosters to get rid of him is not respect, having your egotistic wife whine about being betrayed is not respect, having your cronies try and sabotage Fisher is not respect so your other son can take over the family cash cow at some point. No that is not respect and FSU and their fan base are not that stupid anyway, well most of them.

oh my god

did he just say “just like a woman” and grin like he wasn’t thinking about committing a felony?

Wow...

I don’t think I have ever felt bad for HD. And I still don’t! But all jokes aside that was awful. I hope they run that clip on national TV before the GT game. People have to see how bad it has become. Not just die hard nole fans, but everyone. Ladies and Gentleman, Poppa Bowden no longer exits. Say hello to EFF YOU BOWDEN.

Not an alcoholic, just an FSU grad.

He’s really mad. I bet he wants to go on a rant about how he made FSU and how he’s better than this. I can’t blame him too much. The situation has been handled poorly. It should have been more private. I’m assuming no one talked directly to him about this, he only heard about it from the news, friends, or family.

I wonder how wierd practice must be this week.

Bowden fans amaze me

They say he is so classy and deserves better, but the video on espn is ok because he is pissed about being fired. You can’t be classy and then go taking out your problems on some female young enough to be your great granddaughter because you are having a bad day. This is worse than Woody Hayes punching the kid on tv. Well maybe not.

Yeah, but she’s a woman, so it doesn’t count, right? Um, it is 1909, right? Right?

sigh

lol nice link

funny seeing him mad. Too bad 99% of the population think he’s an awesome coach

by Cee on Oct 6, 2009 1:53 AM EDT up reply actions

wow, that was brutal; this is gonna end SO badly

He is scoring no publicity points with outside parties, that’s for sure. I don’t know if that will make all this easier, but it makes him look worse. Sad.

Not so fast my friend

Bobby’s biggest fan base is rallying behind him.

Ha! It's to be expected

But this is why we keep cheering against Notre Dame every week, come to think of it, the Irish might need a new coach.

This, more than anything proves the fact that Bobby does need to go!!

and of course they have the right to boot out any coach they want!
