Here are some highlights from Steve Ellis' blog.

Re: Ponder.
Ponder was diagnosed with bruised ribs after taking a hit on a third-down run during FSU’s first touchdown drive against North Carolina State on Saturday. Per ACC guidelines, FSU does not release an injury report on Sundays but Bowden hinted that Ponder could be limited in early practices this week.

"Anybody that’s ever had bruised ribs, they know how it hurts," Bowden said. "He went back and threw the whole game with it. Usually the next day it hurts the worse."

Re: Who will hire the new DC when Andrews retires?
The subject of Mickey Andrew’s likely retirement – his wife Diane left little doubt last week this is his last season – led to this question. If Bowden returned for the 2010 season, would he allow Jimbo Fisher to make the hiring decisions or would he make them?

"I think you got to definitely consider him because he’s the future, you know the future is him," Bowden said of the head coach-in-waiting.

Further questioned on the matter, Bowden later added: "If he’s going to be the next head coach when I leave here, you got to, everything’s in his hands."

What a deal

Bowden whats to stay another 2.5mil year, and Jimbo can make all the decisions.

by wholeNole on Nov 1, 2009 5:41 PM EST reply actions

I have a strong suspicion his antics this season

are largely about money, i.e., his posturing and refusla to acknoweldge the deadline. The current deal is that when he quits, he gets a $1m payoff for lifetime acheivement. That’s only twice what his former OC got to walk away. But if Bobby threatens to try to stay, which would create more bad PR and division among the Nole family, we might just be inclined to offer him at least another year’s salary ($2.5M) to go peacably.

If Ponder doesn't play

we’re dead. Did someone finally tell Bobby that he won’t be making any more important decisions?

All we have left is becoming bowl eligible

Even with Ponder healthy, theres still a chance we don’t go bowling. We are where we are because of our defense.

Not being dramatic, rationally looking at this

Clemson should score 40 and we should not get 30 – that’s with Superman playing QB. Without CP, I think that number gets closer to 50 for Clemson and under 20 for us. I know we have some members clamoring for EJ to get playing time, which is really bizarre to me that we have arguably the best QB in the nation this year and some of our folks want to see his back-up. That’s a nice luxury to have when you are a good team. When you’re awful and doing everything you can just to survive a game no matter who your opponent is, you don’t remove your best player from the field. That seems pretty obvious to me.

by HROB3 on Nov 1, 2009 9:05 PM EST up reply actions

EJ is really flippin' good

Don’t even kid yourself; this is Ponder’s team—but that kid sitting back their is one hungry, athletic dude.

But quarterbacks get hit, and I do not know one quarterback who gets through a season without an obnoxious bruse.

So lets not root for EJ to play until this is EJ’s team. EJ will do some great things that may even make you think “Ponder who?” But lets hope that we don’t see EJ until this is HIS team.

by Trus1te on Nov 2, 2009 12:06 PM EST up reply actions

How do we know he is really flippin good?

He has 2 career attempts. Being hungry and athetic and a dude doesn’t really translate into greatness.

I do agree with you that he will play when Ponder is no longer here or seriously injured, until then let him sit.

Its a blind call

But its a call I’m willing to make; from the limited experience I’ve seen him—he is exactly what we wanted when we took him.

Don’t even fool yourself.

by Trus1te on Nov 2, 2009 12:37 PM EST up reply actions

What exactly have you seen?

And if you have seen it then it wouldn’t be a blind call.

I have seen way too many “can’t miss” players come and go in the last decade so I am in NO way getting to excited about the next so called superstar.

Warm ups, practice reports, highlight video, limited game time vs BYU

He is tall, with good posture in the pocket and a very quick 3,5 and 7 step drop (his legs cover a lot of ground as well); his mechanics are nothing short of exceptional and he throws a VERY accurate, VERY heavy ball with VERY LITTLE EFFORT.

If you go back and watch his old highlight reels— it isn’t EJ just throwing to open receivers; EJ was not on the best team in Virginia Beach; it was EJ threading the needle to receivers again and again and again.

EJ would be starting on probably 70 other ball clubs right now, but with his fractured thumb and CP7’s emergence as an elite quarterback—EJ is getting the benefit of waiting another year or 2 to fully learn the playbook behind an elite minded QB before having his own neck put on the line game in and game out (something that would have greatly helped guys like Colt McCoy and Terrell Pryor).

If the O-Line is continued to be coached to greatness, EJ’s tenure as starting QB will be nothing short of great.

So, like I said, I’m in no hurry, but I’m really not worried about him; he is FIsher’s guy and I firmly believe Fisher is watching out for him

At least give him credit for his enthusiasm.

The only other guy who we can say that about in the past 8 years is Christian ponder—who happens to be kicking ass…

I hope he sits anyway. If he s hurt at all, let him rest up

an Added benefit is that all the critics who didnt think he was a top 15 QB will see what our offenses looks like without him. Not that I dont believe in EJ, but CP has earned the respect of my assumption that without him, the offense hurts.

And also someone else mentioned it in another thread, baptism by fire

this scares me because if Ponder doesnt play, all of the white whigs will come out of hiding, and proclaim Jimbo as a failure because he doesnt have Ponder.

Ponder will do well to survive the season. Teams are going to really come after him knowing he’s playing hurt. IMO the fact Fisher didn’t play EJ against a shitty NCS D is a concern.

BB has really shown himself to be a selfish person, unfortunately in doing the right thing FSU is going to look like the bad guy. At this point screw it. Can him.

by levynole on Nov 1, 2009 9:45 PM EST reply actions

For me the fact that Fisher didn't play EJ against NCST

Is more based on the fact that we needed to continue to score and couldn’t afford to gamble with EJ. Its more a reflection in his confidence in Ponder and the necessity to keep pace with the opposing team than a lack of confidence in EJ.

by truenole87 on Nov 1, 2009 10:33 PM EST up reply actions

EJ did get out there early before the second half to warm up. Jimbo probably put the decision to play I Ponder’s hands.

by marlins44 on Nov 1, 2009 10:36 PM EST up reply actions

A concern?

You’re kidding, right? If you’re starting QB says he’s ok and is still capable of making plays, he plays. It wasn’t Fisher’s call. It was Ponder’s.

by tricknole on Nov 1, 2009 10:42 PM EST up reply actions

I posted this above, but apparently it needs to be said again...

We have some super intelligent people that post here, but the platform of calling for EJ is just plain dumb to me and I cannot understand why some continue to do it. If CP does stay next year for some illogical reason, and we still are squeaking out games/losing close like we are doing now, EJ should not play NEXT YEAR, either.

“Clemson should score 40 and we should not get 30 – that’s with Superman playing QB. Without CP, I think that number gets closer to 50 for Clemson and under 20 for us. I know we have some members clamoring for EJ to get playing time, which is really bizarre to me that we have arguably the best QB in the nation this year and some of our folks want to see his back-up. No one is calling for EJ to play over a healthy Ponder

There is no reason to get Ponder hurt worse in a game we will not win anyway. Save him for the winnable ones (WF, UMD).

by FSUSOM on Nov 1, 2009 11:07 PM EST up reply actions

FSUSOM,

Read anyone of FSUn’s post-game reviews and there is always someone calling for situational playing time for EJ in the comments section. It’s maddening to me because we are neither the team that can afford to do that, nor is Ponder the guy to take off the field. I’m all for not playing him if he’s not healthy enough to do so, but the calling for EJ just for game experience drives me nuts.

by HROB3 on Nov 1, 2009 11:30 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I think you also have to look at the fact that

most of the members here are beyond looking at wins and losses. This season is a wash. As FSUSOM said, its also about a banged up QB. I want CP running the offense all the time, but if you can work on improving the future a bit at the detriment to the present (which what is the benefit, this season is kaputzky) I say do it. I dont think we will beat Clemson, and I would love to see CP healthy goin into the Wake and Maryland games. I want to make a bowl game, I dont want UF having the longest active bowl streak, so you work with what you got.

I think this recruiting season just like our playing season....a wash.

I don’t see us landing even a top 50 class with the way things have played out lately. But honestly, I am not that worried because I know the coaches will find the pieces we need, maybe not what we wanted, and will use them to get the very best out of them they can. This will probably be a heavy JUCO laden class as I even doubt we hold on to some of the players we have right now who say they are committed. I am not sure I blame them though, they are making a decision that could impact the rest of their life. I think more important than any recruit we bring in will be the defensive coaches that are brought here. The right crew will take what we have and what they get and do great things with them no matter what.

Overall though, I am ready to sacrifice recruits, football wins, FSU AD and president, coaches, whatever it takes to right this ship.

Jimbo in my mind has proven all we need to know about him being the next head coach, and that is what I hang all hope on now because I think that future is beyond bright.

by diablonole on Nov 2, 2009 10:32 AM EST up reply actions

Ponder was hurt. Same area as last year. Jimbo took a chance by playing him the 2nd half, I thought he was done on that CB blitz. That was the situation. So why risk your franchise guy against a crappy D. My concern is a well founded one: If EJ really is a stud 5* guy then he should be capable of directing the offense against them. He’s been here going on 2 years now and should know enough of the playbook to play a 65th rated D.

I’ve never been one to call for EJ over CP. But saturday was a different situation.

Ameica, Land of the free and home to the entitled.

by levynole on Nov 1, 2009 11:38 PM EST reply actions

Understood,

My contention is the non-injury situations. We have posters calling for EJ situationally (think I just made up a word) with a perfectly healthy Ponder on the field and our shitty D allowing the opponent, no matter who that might be, to score every f-ing time they get the ball. That is what drives me crazy.

Calm down Seminole nation-

No one should be clamoring for EJ to start over Ponder when Ponder’s healthy. However, it boggles my mind how most of Seminole nation has decided that an E.J. start in death valley, if necessary, is tantamount to conceding defeat. No matter how many times a team loses its star quarterback, be it at the college level or in the pros, and that same team rallies around the new quarterback with great success, fans everywhere still panic every time. Look, Manuel was the number one pro-style quarterback coming out of high school and he has now had nearly 2 seasons of coaching by Fisher and mentoring by Ponder. If he needs to start, he’ll make most of the same screen and check-down passes that Ponder makes. Sure, the inexperience factor will kick in for a few rookie mistakes, but I don’t believe that it will drastically alter our chances of victory against Clemson.

P.S. None of this is meant as a slight to Christian Ponder, who is definitely the most valuable asset of this team, and the best quarterback it has had in a decade.

TampaNole, I agree with the premise just think differently on one thing

Sure, the inexperience factor will kick in for a few rookie mistakes, but I don’t believe that it will drastically alter our chances of victory against Clemson

I think right now that our offense plays as close to perfect as can be expected and yet we barely win games due to our lack of any defense. A few rookie mistakes could turn a 45-38 FSU loss into a 54-14 loss quickly. And sure, some of you may say that a loss is a loss but being humiliatied could cause the well oiled machine of an offense we have to have some mental breakdowns. Imagine if you will the offense’s mentality right now, we give 150% every game only to watch the defense lose game after game. Pair that with having to play EJ, taking a real beating in the showdown and then trying to regroup against a solid Wake team that has beaten us 3 times in a row.

by diablonole on Nov 2, 2009 10:42 AM EST up reply actions

Since BB pretty much said JF will decide who the DC is, it makes me wonder what other decisions in hiring and firing he will make in the off season. Only guess but Chester is pretty much a given it seems, but who else. I guess we will find out in about a month or so.
