Around SBN: Off Tackle Empire interviews Rich Rodriguez

Florida State linebackers coach and former NC State head coach Chuck Amato is interested in head coaching jobs, according to ESPN’s Joe Schad. Amato was last seen as a head coach losing to the Akron Zips and East Carolina in a nine-loss season in 2006, the culmination of a three year slide for the Wolfpack under Amato’s supervision. Amato is even so generous as to consider coaching non-AQ schools, so step right up and hire the man Wikipedia describes as "Familiar to millions of college football TV viewers for his robust torso and vivid wraparound shades." Florida State fans know him more for his recent lackluster recruiting in South Florida and his role coaching the linebackers in a defense ranked 106th in the nation, but hey: if you rank your coaches by cup size, your man is waiting by the phone for your call with his sexy red shoes on and everything.

To FSU fans, this could signal that Bowden has decided to throw Amato under the bus and let Jimbo Fisher fire him. Bowden had been offered a deal that would let him come back in 2010, but only if he yielded total control of personnel, game day operations, recruiting, and practices. Well, everything.

We've told you forever that Amato is gone and this looks like a confirmation.

This seems like to me that Bobby is coming back...

He lets Jimbo fire Chuck, relinquish all decision making authority, and he remains on staff as head coach for one more year. shoot me, please.

I don't think so.

The trustees and the admin want change to increase attendance and revenues and perhaps save recruiting. None of that would happen with deal that leaves Bobby in place as the figure head. Too many wouldn’t understand that he’s not still in charge of things.

by FiestaNole on Nov 13, 2009 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

Bobby

wouldn’t remember that he’s not in charge. He can’t stay as a figurehead, that is even worse than the farewell tour he said he didn’t want.

by WBisaNOLE on Nov 13, 2009 3:33 PM EST up reply actions

Yup...

He will meddle nonstop.

by noles55 on Nov 13, 2009 3:45 PM EST up reply actions

I originally thought that same thing but I think with a new D coaching staff in there the immediate improvement will mean we’re winning more games which in turn means Bowden will stay out of the way. As it is now and games are close or we’re losing and that’s where Bowden is stepping in thinking he can make a difference.

Obviously it would be a completely different situation but if we’re 6-2 right now or 7-1 I promise you Bobby’s just sitting back and not doing much.

by Brandon B on Nov 13, 2009 4:50 PM EST up reply actions

Disagree...

FSU’s offense is on the way back and Bobby still meddles in that. He called the deep pass INT against Clemson despite Jimbos objections. He has forced Dexter on Jimbo as well. Same thing with calls on whether to go for it or punt. Bobby IS an obstacle right now…and will continue to be.

by noles55 on Nov 13, 2009 4:57 PM EST up reply actions

True...

I just think FSU has a huge issue if Bobby tries to butt in next year. Who will say no to him? Who has the backbone to do that? I don’t think anyone honestly.

by noles55 on Nov 13, 2009 9:34 PM EST up reply actions

How do you know this?

My first reaction on that play was that it was such a stupid call and at such a pivotal time that only BB could have called it. I continued to believe that until heard Fisher say “I” never should have called that play and “I” never should have put Ponder in that position (with the awful play call).

FWIW, my reaction to Fisher’s comments was admiration for admitting the mistake. Now I’m not sure which I’d rather believe: that Fisher would never make such a dumb**s call or that he has the good character to take responsibility for such a dumb**s call (rather than blaming it on the players’ failure to execute, which is basically what Bowden and his crew have been doing forever).

by csfuu on Nov 14, 2009 11:29 AM EST up reply actions

Wait ...

… if Fisher didn’t make the call, then I can have it both ways: he would never make such a dumb**s call AND he’s willing to take responsibility for a dumb**s call even when someone else makes it.

If Bobby does come back...

…can we at least have it written into his contract that he relinquishes all pre-game, halftime, and post-game interviews to Jimbo? Those are getting brutal to watch…have been for years…

Some people think Odell Haggins may be kept, but

If that guy who coaches the Dline for the Vikings is named the DC I do not see what they would need Haggins for. The coordinators usually also serve as a position coach themselves so I think he would be out as well. Now if they go with Smart or someone else I guess it is possible they keep Haggins.

Oh man, I knew it was slim chances on Smart, but darn, I did not know they were already ruled out.

Odell situation

if you check out Rivals coaches’ page you will see that Odell, Jimbo, Coley, Carter, and Dawsey are listed as having 2011 recruiting targets, while everyone else does not. I thought that it was interesting.

Maybe this season will end on a high note after all.

If only Chuck can find an AD whose goals are

1. Losing
2. Being laughed at while losing

he will be a rich man.

Great News

I think we all knew this was going to happen sooner or later, I am just happy it happened sooner. Hopefully someone will give him a job before the end of our season and we can move on without him ruining anymore of our talent and recruiting efforts.

Any recent developments in our DC hunt? any new names pop up, or any more info on who we might have coming in? I am still hopping for Smart at DC with Diaz coaching our LBs. But just as with everything else related to FSU Football, my hopes never come even close to being true.

I think..

.. Its also Amato himself is pissed off and wanting to leave (much less getting fired anyway) because he now knows he WONT be elevated to DC since Jimbo has the say-so as to the hiring of a new defensive coaching staff.

Allen, your next you gutless chump.

by CPNole on Nov 13, 2009 2:55 PM EST reply actions

I doubt he gets HC job but

I bet he does get a DC job. In fact, my sources tell me that North Alabama is looking for a new DC…

I think this article is WAY off....

Nobody will hire Amato…..and I think he has been looking for something better since he got to FSU. He is at FSU because nobody else will have him.

Until I see it announced he is fired, I don’t believe it.

If he does get fired….he might wind up at North Alabama, but nobody else is putting up with his BS.

by noles55 on Nov 13, 2009 3:47 PM EST reply actions

it doesn’t say that he’s got offers, it says that he is looking around…

by garnetandgold on Nov 13, 2009 6:16 PM EST up reply actions

I can't take credit for this, but I thought it was pretty funny.
We should just tell Bobby that this year is 2010 and that it is his last year, because he probably wouldn’t know the difference.

Cruel I know, but still funny.
