Doesn't this seem to be the way it will be next year?

Bowden succumbs to the pressure but he wants the title of HC one more year. He knows he can't cut the mustard, so he negotiates another figurehead stay at the helm. He cedes all real duties to Jimbo but publicly maintains the title. He can't call plays, he can't get involved in any way, but he remains the head coach of record.

Jimbo puts together his team, rights the ship, and the Noles return to respectability.  Of course that means a graceful exit by Amato and Allen since Mick has already made his move.

Bowden makes his exit on a winning note and the program moves on to the new era.

Bowden leaves with face saved, a little, and the harsh feelings and ill will over the failures of the last decade are swept aside.

This would be a gift to Coach Bowden.

Has he earned this? Is it owed to him? Or is it insane to try to do anything other than a thorough housecleaning?

If Bowden comes back, it can mean bad things ahead, very bad things...

Say FSU does great, and all those that care know who really would be behind it (Jimbo), but the national media will rave about how BB righted the ship. Games sell out again. He is able to swing a few booster because they are just fat and happy again with an ACC title and BCS game or maybe even more. He works behind the scenes to get Jimbo bought out. This a nightmare scenario, but not out of the realm of possibility. That said, I still think he’s gone after this year, but watch out if he keeps his foot in the door…

I agree. I don’t think Bowden will have any success in trying to oust Jimbo after a successful 2010, but we will definitely have to deal with all of the headaches once again.

Those that think we can bring Bowden back as a figurehead and have a smooth transition should realize that Bowden will not see it that way. He will see it as one more year to wrestle control back. Again, he won’t have any success in getting control back but it will be ugly. If this guy was cut out for a victory lap, he’d have taken it in 2001, 2004, 2006, or 2009. It’s not in his DNA.

I think the boosters know the truth now.

If FSU wins from here on out and if (Witch I dought he will) come back I dont think the boosters will change there mind of where FSU needs to go. The media is starting to see JF is a great coach, recruiter, and will be the new face of FSU. If the boosters are smart thy will try to do everything in there power to keep JF happy and here for a long time. He could be the next BB for FSU and the beat goes on.

You are correct....

Bobby will be ALL over taking the credit for any turnaround and will try and stay.

Just read

to get a taste of the brainwashed fans that will buy into as well. I think Bobby could make it work…….those folks will believe anything he is selling.

Great Site

I think this is my favorite line, it is in reference to TN from an poster:

TomahawkNation, a great site outside of the spoiled brat-like, vendetta driven commentary that goes along with the great analysis

I like No-holds-barred analysis of FSU Sports! but the above might just be better

logical evaluation. Most there just think with emotion…….and that is tied into a flat out worship of Bobby as if he is a deity. It is weird honestly.

A collective group

Fanbase, boosters, BOT. Anyone with a pulse who doesn’t enjoy losing. If (this is a big if) Jimbo gets bought out so Bowden can stay………. Expect to see crowds like the NCSU crowd or smaller. Wait a minute, “we” know who “we” are. Nuff said!

by Scalpemall on Nov 19, 2009 2:54 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not so sure its that simple

you saw the bowden support from the “stupid is as stupid does” portion of the fanbase… add 9 win season and an ACC title to that and they will believe Bowden actually had something to do with it….cause that’s what ESPN told them to believe.

I no longer think it is safe for him to stay (after Ann’s Butt showing), under any circumstances other than a public acknowledgement that this is his last year.

Even then I don’t trust them

Yeah, right!

Heres hoping for the best........

I’m not worried. I don’t like what JS said publicly, but privately you know others with influence have been thinking this for a long time. Personally i think Richt handing us our a&$ in that bowl was the beginning of the end for Senor Bowden. If it comes down to it, I don’t see FSU wasting 5 mil. to send away arguably our best option for (at least) the short term future. Also, its the inevitable nature for “new” to replace “old”. Regarding progress, greater men have tried to suppress it(delay the inevitable)and failed miserably! Sorry about the rant, i’ve had my nose in the books all day and had to let it out! God save the Noles!

by Scalpemall on Nov 19, 2009 6:01 PM EST up reply actions

"God save the Noles!"

we can agree on that.

You’ve helped to balance me out too…I keep forgeting TK and his side kick likley will not be the ones holding up, I mean making the decision next year.

Yeah, right!

by truecolors on Nov 20, 2009 2:37 PM EST up reply actions

IMO...

I think he has already gotten what he is owed. I don’t just mean the nice paycheck, but the pass that he has received for years of decline. With just the performance on the field since 01 any coach at a football school like FSU would have been fired years ago, but due to what Bowden has achieved at FSU he has been kept on and given every chance to turn things around. That is on top of the field naming, statue and the window.

Bringing Bowden back still leaves us a coach down. With all the disadvantages we currently have on the trail in comparison to UF, Bama and even UT and Auburn right now we need every single position hammering the recruiting trail. Until he is the head coach Jimbo Fisher going to watch a HS game will not have the impact of Lane Kiffin going to a game.

by osceolafan850 on Nov 16, 2009 11:20 PM EST reply actions

Is it a foregone conclusion?

Bowden not returning? Or, does he still have enough juice to stick around and make such an arraignment work?
In other words, if he demands to come back, no matter the capacity but with just the Head Coach title, will FSU have to let him have it?
If that happens, will Fisher stay and try to give him a successful last season?

by mudra on Nov 17, 2009 8:06 AM EST reply actions

Bowden has pissed off too many people with power and money

I have met with high end boosters who have cut off all future donations until Bowden is gone (we are talking 50k – 500k donations here.)

You've gotta be kidding me. We just went through this yesterday. This is NOT what would happen.

This is what would happen. EVERYONE knows this unless they are still fooling themselves. Was this a flamebait?

by TRMNole on Nov 17, 2009 8:54 AM EST reply actions

Can't blame the TC

I was told that another site is saying Bowden will be back with no power next year.

by osceolafan850 on Nov 17, 2009 10:19 AM EST up reply actions

Just an honest question

I suffered through another episode of the BB Show on Sunday and was a bit stunned when I heard him say “It’s going to be strange to be on the sidelines without Mickey there.” or something like that.
He also gave specific credit to Fisher saying he called the game plan and did the whole thing himself. Clearly not taking any credit for the win.
It’s obviously positioning.
As long as he keeps saying he’s coming back next year, there will be this speculation.
Not flamebait, although it could be considered such.
I was just looking for some more, clear, concise, exact inside information.
Until it’s done, there are other possible scenarios. Unless it’s already a done deal.

by mudra on Nov 17, 2009 10:34 AM EST up reply actions

It was the scenario you painted that I was calling into question.

Otherwise I maintain a certainty of three things: death, taxes, and the complete destruction of Florida State’s football program by Bobby Bowden. (I hope I’ve always maintained this. Please re-read my comments in that light.) My inside info has become close to worthless on this issue, and I would be surprized ZERO if Bowden were back next year. And so to clarify my position, it will be a disaster. And it will be the scenario that I painted, not one of grandiose exits and fond farewells.

by TRMNole on Nov 17, 2009 12:19 PM EST up reply actions

Well, I took my own advice and went back and read my comments, and certainly this part was confusing:
(But it’s going to. Finally. Because it’s not up to Bobby.)

If that trumped everything else, I apologize – I was simply talking about money eventually winning the day. Not necessarily this year but certainly next. But next year IS NOT SOON ENOUGH. And the exit next year would be no prettier and perhaps even uglier than it would be this year. Sorry to pound, but it’s a point that can not be lost in this. It’s IMPERATIVE that Bowden leave now. Don’t think for a second that it’s not.

P.S. In no way am I hedging bets one way or another on timetables. I’ve long since given up on that. Way above my pay scale to predict the level of cowardice and complacency that FSU is able to achieve. Predicting Bowden is a piece of cake, however.

by TRMNole on Nov 17, 2009 12:49 PM EST up reply actions

Bowden is out after next year regardless

There is no way in f-ing hell that the Boosters/Athletic Dept will let Bowden back after next year, no way they pay Jimbo $5 million to see him leave, take some coaches with him or have them leave on their own, especially if Bowden will have signed over control of the team after this season to Jimbo, what a cluster suck that would be starting all over for all intents and purposes.

I’m sure Bowden would love to see that happen, but no way it does even if he goes out fighting and things get really ugly if he is not head coach after next years season.

Though I am fairly confident that he does come back next year, he’ll get one last big paycheck plus the $1 mil he gets to walk away; I know the Boosters would love to buy him out after this year for probably more than the $3.5 mil he would get for staying next year, but I’ve got to think they would like to avoid that situation if at all possible, I really don’t think anyone wants to have bought him out and pushed him out the door like that if it can be avoided.

Though I only see that being avoided IF Bowden #1 gives the “reigns” to Jimbo, #2 accepts that next year will be his last year no ifs, and, or buts, and #3 not sure about this one but I wonder if they make him agree to some type of “keep-your-mouth-shut” agreement with the media.

He keeps saying he will be coming back because he thinks it will make it true. “If the media and everyone else expects for me to come back, FSU might as well let me come back.” He might also think that there is no way FSU will go against what he is saying publicly.

by lul on Nov 17, 2009 2:47 PM EST up reply actions

One of the benefits of a new coaching staff is it creates hype, which attracts recruits. I also suspect coaches the most motivated in their early years. It’s part of the reason most coaches win a title within their first five years.

Allowing Bobby to linger around while Jimbo is the real man in charge, reduces both the amount of hype the new staff will receive and how much Jimbo will be motivated. It’s not the right way to do things. It shouldn’t happen.

Sadly I think FSU WILL allow Bobby to return just to save face with the media and the supporters he has left in the university. It’s a waste of money and will be a mess just like the HCIW deal.

by lul on Nov 17, 2009 9:40 AM EST reply actions

It could happen.

But imagine if we knock off the gaters. I bet you anything he would take it as his “final hoorah” and go away without a scene.

by mudra on Nov 17, 2009 10:36 AM EST up reply actions

Imagining is as far as that scenario will ever go.

by lul on Nov 17, 2009 11:13 AM EST up reply actions

True.

But it would give him a face saving out and would let the new era begin without the PR ass whipping of pushing him out the door.
Dreams are nice…but sometimes that’s all they are.

by mudra on Nov 17, 2009 11:40 AM EST up reply actions

I don't think he would see it as a "final hoorah"

He is so senile and full of himself he would see it as him having something left in the “tank” and give him motivation to surpass Joe Pa the following season.

We are not beating UF so it really doesn’t matter.

Anything other than a thorough housecleaning is undeserved charity.

Oh, forgot about how great FSU has been at that for the Bowdens.

I have really no information but my gut says....

Bowden stays for one more year, if we lose to the gaters. We win, he retries.
Otherwise –
He will announce it is his last year and have the farewell tour he has said he didn’t want.
Just my gut…it may be gas…but it sure seems that’s what coming.

by mudra on Nov 17, 2009 4:06 PM EST reply actions

It would only work IF

Before game day, Bobby isn’t allowed to ask questions, give advice, make demands, talk with the AD, make any public statements about the program w/o going through Jimbo, or otherwise distract the real coaches from their very difficult task of fixing the program Booby broke.

On game day, his microphone must be turned off, he must maintain a restraining-order distance frm the coaches on the sidelines, and he must, again, make no public statements about the program. (He can make all the half-time statements he wants about what’s happening on the field— disinformation can be an effectvie weapon against the enemy).

In other words, unless it was possible to gag him and make him and stay away from the actual coaches, NO, bringing him back next year won’t work.

And, it would be a terrible PR move by a weak-kneed administration that is now desparate to bring fans and their $$$ back to the program.

There is no way to split this baby as you suggest, without killing it.

by FiestaNole on Nov 17, 2009 5:35 PM EST reply actions

no microphone please
On game day, his microphone must be turned off

He shouldn’t even have a microphone. For all intents and purposes if he comes back it should be as a bonafide mascot. Not comparing him with Sebastian the Ibis, but he should have the same input on play calling as that ibis has during UM games.

Somebody set us up the Bowden. All your field are belong to us.

by malweka on Nov 17, 2009 8:56 PM EST up reply actions

I am not suggesting it as a solution

I can just see this scenario playing out if he insists on staying and if they refuse to make him go.

by mudra on Nov 17, 2009 9:34 PM EST up reply actions

You can see how this s playing out

thus the point of my post. He’s obviously made up his mind. So the positioning continues…
