Rough year for FSU

"It boils down to one of two things: It's either the horses or the jockeys. And we think we have some pretty good horses."

54 years old

Too young. My mom died at 54. Prayers to his family and friends.

RIP

Great writer, nice guy, and always humble. The Democrat and his old haunt The Osceola lost a good one.

Indeed

Steve had a pretty significant impact on me professionally. He helped show me what a true work ethic is and helped shape, directly and indirectly, what I wanted to do with my life.

ugh

I worked with The Ellis for seven years. I can’t say enough about him as a journalist and as a person. Losing him and former co-worker David Poole in one year is hard to bear. My life is greater for having known them, and less without them in it. RIP, Steve.

I just hate this news.

I remember when he wrote for the Osceola and I couldn’t wait each week to read what he’d written.

by FiestaNole on Nov 19, 2009 4:58 PM EST reply actions

That too is how I got to know him

followed his stuff in the Osceola, long before this on-line stuff was available, for years.

Once he got to the Democrat I read his stuff religiously every morning before school.

I don’t care if it was a story about Lonnie Johnson starting a new diet in the offseason, I read every article he wrote.

I was always amazed at how many articles he could produce between the end of a game and printing, before the ebays and interwebs became what they are today.

Great coverage of the Noles

He will be greatly missed – even for many of us that did not know him personally.

A great writer, and an even better person

A true model of excellence in the FSU community, Steve will be greatly missed.

Sad day indeed for the Seminole Nation.

Condolences to the Ellis Family.

Steve was the first Nole beat reporter and main stream media reporter to call on Bobby to step down. He had the nad’s to see what the problem was and how to correct it, after being on the Nole beat longer than any other reporter in FSU history.

RIP Steve Ellis.

Its unfortunate that BB had to call him out on it

when he was reached to comment on his passing.

"He didn’t play favorites. He told it like he thought it was," Bowden added. "Of course, I got a lot of grief out of it but still, I knew he was doing a job."

But like many on here have said, you never know whats gonna come out of the mouth of an 80 year old.

Horrible and sad news

He was great and balanced beat reporter and was the only FSU beat writer for TD that I ever knew. His input and his voice will be greatly missed by Seminole fans. Rest in peace, Steve.

Terrible news

I met Steve once. He was great to me. Prayers for him and his family. RIP

I'm shocked...

Steve was always fair with his assessments of FSU and turned out a high volume of coverage for one guy. The Seminole Nation has lost a great member of its family. For years, he was the one source for FSU news for many of us.

Prayers for the Ellis Family.

So sad, I was never big into the Noles until I started going to FSU so I don't have any reall connections with Ellis

But I’ll always thank him for firing the shot heard round the Seminole Nation and calling for Bowden to step down. He provided the much needed cajones to get the ball rolling.

I'll always remember the moments he gave me as a kid.

Sitting in my parents’ kitchen eating pancakes, drinking orange juice, and flipping the sports section or Saturday game section with dilated pupils in anticipation of his work.
A little part of us died today.

A very sad story.

I heard the news yesterday, so I hope this story doesn’t seem too aloof. (I was shocked and very saddened by the news.) My wife and I are pregnant again with another girl, and she came home a couple weeks ago with a new idea for the baby’s name: Ellis. Immediately I thought of Steve Ellis (even though I haven’t lived in Tallahassee for five years), and I told my wife I thought it would be a strange association for me to have for a little girl. :) I know this isn’t much of a tribute, but I hope it speaks to the impact Steve had on sharing the goings-on at FSU with the Nole fandom at large for years and years. His name is synonymous with the FSU beat. I never knew the man personally, and I don’t know anything about his character. From every account, he’s a man I would have been proud to meet. I’m sad that he’s gone.

RIP Steve....

…The Tallahassee Democrat wont be the same without him. Followed his articles for the Noles for years.
