Florida State Pulls Out 29-26 Win Over Maryland

Maryland ran 73 plays to FSU's 50, and Florida State's defense couldn't get the Terps' offense off the field as Maryland held the ball for an incredible 38 minutes of possession time.  But what FSU's offense did with those 50 plays was hand Maryland their 2nd worst defensive game of the season.  The 'Noles gained 8 yards per snap and yet they still struggled to find a rhythm as they sat on the sidelines for long periods of time.  All 3 of FSU's interceptions came after Maryland drives of 4, 6, and 6 minutes.

Florida State led 14-13 at halftime.  In the 3rd quarter, Maryland started a drive that went 59 yards on 7 plays to lead 19-14 at the beginning of the 4th quarter.  Florida State then went 62 yards in only 4 plays for the score, highlighted by Bert Reed's 42 yard end around for a touchdown.  The 2-point conversion was good and the 'Noles led 22-19.  But Florida State's 90th ranked defense was again a sieve and allowed Maryland to march 79 yards on 12 plays for the touchdown and the 26-22 lead.  The drive lasted 6 minutes.  Florida State was then intercepted and the defense held.  Freshman return sensation Greg Reid gave FSU good field position for the first time all day, and freshman quarterback E.J. Manuel led FSU to victory with runs of 15 and 20, and a pass of 7 yards.  FSU led 29-26.  And importantly, they left Maryland with only 32 seconds.

Florida State had a sparse crowd for what was Mickey Andrews' last game.  It was also senior day.  And Judging by the attendance at the game, 'Nole fans just aren't interested in the product FSU is putting on the field.  This was an important weekend for recruiting and it will be very interesting to see what the recruits at the game on official visits felt about the atmosphere and the program.  Maryland had only a single win over a 1A team on the season and FSU kept it that way.  Florida State is now bowl eligible for a record 28th consecutive season and will travel to the swamp to face the Florida Gators, in what is becoming a rivalry in name only as the Gators will be looking to win their 6th straight over the Noles.  UF will be 4-touchdown favorites and the game will be televised nationally on CBS.

My thoughts

Patrick Robinson had his best game of the year.

EJ needs to lower the arc on some of his passes. His scrambling ability is off the charts though.

Reid once again proved to be our most electric player. He is going to be very good.

Fortson once again proved to be hot and cold.

The O-line did a decent job considering the main stay Hudson was missing.

This team never quits and that does count for something.

This seals a bowl game for us and that is good. On the other hand I have a bad feeling on what implications this has on our program and Bowden coming back.

by 1newplayer on Nov 21, 2009 3:48 PM EST reply actions

Nice...

I personally don’t think it has any impact on Bowden at this point…what is on the table is on the table and just has to play out.

EJ is not over arching the ball isn’t turning over.

Yeah, right!

by truecolors on Nov 21, 2009 3:50 PM EST up reply actions

Bowden will be here but we’ll have Jimbo calling the shots on offense and a new Defensive staff and Special teams staff

Bowden would be a glorified mascot paraded around

by samnite on Nov 21, 2009 3:52 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah thats a problem as well

He has always had a funny release even in high school. You can tell though that someone has been working with him on it. One interception wasn’t his fault either. It was on Beau the TE.

Bad choice of words... the matter still has to play out, but both sides have decided where their head is at.

When the get together it will unfold… I don’t think this game affects that either way.

Yeah, right!

Bowl game vs. losing record

I think that will sway some of those making the decision. It shouldn’t, though.

Korey Mangum actually made a big tackle today

Was anyone else as shocked as I was that he did something right?

I was shocked too

I fell off the couch and said to my father, “can you believe Mangum made an effing play?”
his reply, “no, but they should take him out now so he can end senior day on a high note.”

Same position he is all game long. Right place at right time. He still got smoked in the 1QTR and thankfully Moody played most of the second half.

They seemed to let the teams play for the most part, which as we all know is very unusual for ACC officials. Maybe since the game had no bearing on the title race the refs just checked out.

Disagree with Uncensored's judgement of the interceptions.

Those are on EJ and and the WRs. Not the defense. We had long drives before at least 2 of those picks, so the offense wasn’t rusty.

The key is that we had an off day on offense and got the win. We actually looked a lot like another team that was wearing alternate uniforms today: Ohio State (well… with really bad defense).

by MattDNole on Nov 21, 2009 3:53 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

good point

But Unscensored seems to always have a bias in his writing.. It is the defense’s fault that EJ was intercepted and returned to within the 10 yard line.

by chris28 on Nov 21, 2009 4:12 PM EST up reply actions

The argument is still valid

Offense never really got into a rhythm. Obviously could have played better, but they weren’t as bad as they looked. It was a rough day overall IMO.

You are absolutely correct. Yours was the closest to the actual final score, followed closely by TrueCubbie with his 31-27 prediction.

I guess The Ryno and I Know, really knew.

30-27 FSU

1. Too many issues being discussed this week with little media attention paid to gameplan and scheme (Mickey, Seniors, Ann’s comments, EJ’s first performance, weather, big recruiting visit, bowl eligibility).

2. MD has nothing to lose, has no pressure playing at home in front of their pissed off fans, has a mobile QB, will be blitzing, and is a team that did beat Clemson this year.

3. We have no homefield advantage. These seniors are 11-11 against FBS teams since 2006

4. BC 2008 Redux: It feels alot like last year’s BC game, which had off-field distractions… and we all saw the players come out flat for the first half. (which if they make it through the next week, MAJOR kudos to the players for having no off-field incidents this season)

It will take a hurculean effort by Jimbo to keep these players focused

Fortson drop

If we had lost, I would have put the loss on Fortson for his drop at the 1 yard line. If he makes that catch, we are up 21-6 going into halftime. He makes some great plays but, kills a couple of drives each week. The D actually played pretty well in the first half but, started breaking down under pressure in the second half. It sure was nice to see them get a three and out when we had to have it.

by heartnnole on Nov 21, 2009 4:22 PM EST reply actions

Yes, EJ was really late and it should have been a walk in TD, but it’s still a play he could have and probably should have made. The blame on the play in the film room goes to EJ, but Fortson should make that play.

On the penalty front

There weren’t much called either way. Maryland noticeably held on many key plays. The refs did sort of sit on their hands today. Probably worked out better for us in the long run.

Those pics were completely on the O. One the first, we drive the length of the field. However, for a RS Freshman making his 2nd start, he looks awesome! Poor guy, though, because next week he is going to look awful and the talking heads will say Jimbo’s prized recruit is a bust.

beating UF gives him some strength within the admin and the fanbase. Our fans would be happy with a win over UF even with this season. I don’t want to be OSU or Michigan, beating the rival does not the season make. I want to compete on a yearly basis for ACC championships and every 4-5 year for national championships, be in the running. Beating UF after a 6-6 season gives Bobby what he needs to come back

I have to disagree on that one.

Think about the ticket sales for the road games. Many fans of the game would like to say they were there for BB’s last season. Commemorative tickets at home. The merchandising alone… think Bobby bobble heads…. the possibilities are endless.
The TV stuff would be constant the tributes sickening, but pretty much anyone should be able to see the money that could be made by having him one more year as a highly paid mascot.

Ticket sales will go up...

…when Bobby is gone and we start winning again with a real coaching staff. Bobby’s farewell tour will not sell. It absolutely will not. Who would pay money to watch a hapless team “guided” by an irrelevant and absurd figurehead? We need to move forward for the sales to go up. It will not happen before then.

First year, we are much better due to a new DC & improved D. The D cannot get any worse and Jimbo will have the O firing on all cylinders. That said, BB final farewell presents the novelty of bobble heads and see you later hater shirts and shirts and novelties.

Second year out will be even better for the D and a wholoe new round of marketing for what should be a fabulous first season with Jimbo as HC.

by NoleLaw on Nov 21, 2009 7:44 PM EST up reply actions

We’re not going to sell enough of these novelties to make up for the empty endzone every game. Realistically, sales of Bowden memorabilia are probably at a 20 year low. The man sabotages his legacy on a weekly basis.

by 38Noles on Nov 21, 2009 7:53 PM EST up reply actions

I should add

the one thing that is a kink is this idea is money. Bringing Bowden back as a figurehead will mean a lot of money next year in terms of marketing and tie ins, but it also means paying him another year which hurts in terms of hiring a new defensive staff. Losing his salary frees up money for sure. I think the decision will be made shortly after the Florida game. December and January will be interesting months in Tally. I definitely am keeping my ear to the ground though and trying to figure out what is going on, but info is tough to get these days regarding that matter.

by 1newplayer on Nov 22, 2009 10:02 AM EST up reply actions

That is not true

Most on this site, and from what I’ve seen, most in the Seminole Nation, are close enough to have figured this out. Bobby needs to go.
However – Around the country, and even more so around our conference, they really don’t know the inside scoop on BB. You hear it when you listen to the spin coming from the national sports guys.
It is big medicine still, out there, beyond our fan base.
Sometimes you have to look beyond your nose, which is the same problem most of us have with the Bowdens at present.

by mudra on Nov 21, 2009 7:27 PM EST up reply actions

No, b/c we have a kick a$$ D and an offense second to none--that's why they will come

Next question is: How much crap will they buy when they come? With a plentiful supply of novelty items mocking BB for opposing teams and other stuff for the BB cult members who never had a chance to purchase a final farewell anything as well as black shirt type gear saying good riddence, the answer is plenty. It gives them a reason to hate UF, the memories of the 90’s brought back to life with a new DC and an offense that can’t be stopped.

The next year, a whole new line of gear for Jimbo as HC when the new DC is in his second year and bringing the D into the top 20 ranks.

Not sayin’ that I prefer the $ to putting finality to the saga.

To most around the country

He remains an icon. You know the situation. Most out there don’t. And if they listen to the national media then you should know what the spin is and will be.

by mudra on Nov 21, 2009 8:43 PM EST up reply actions

Couldn't disagree more

To most of the country he is an after thought. Bowden is no longer national news unless the topic is firing him. He doesn’t get interviewed by the national press, doesn’t coach many primetime games and when he does he has been losing for years. Bowden has been lapped in importance by Meyer, Carroll and Saban and expecting opposing fans to gobble up Bowden gear is as silly as expecting me to rock a houndstooth cap.

by osceolafan850 on Nov 22, 2009 1:09 AM EST up reply actions

Funny response

But I’m not talking about houndstooth caps. Bowdens only relevance IS the question of him being fired or he “retires”. Like it or not, he is an icon and the media likes to obsess on when icons get fired. You’re talking about coaching, I’m talking about the fact that there will need to be some positioning – and how to make the best of it if he ends up staying for a farewell tour.
Your comments were funny, but had nothing to do with the reality we may face.

by mudra on Nov 22, 2009 1:30 AM EST up reply actions

Rec. This is the best analogy of this topic in this thread.

If PSU were playing FSU, and I was planning on going to the game anyway, great. I would not go just because it was Paterno’s farewell tour. I would go to support my team, I could care less that it was JoePa’s last game, nor would I buy his bobble-head (why anyone would buy a bobble-head anyway is beyond me, but I digress), I would go because I was it was planned.

I am sure this is the same feelings other school’s fans would feel about a BB farewell tour, just a sideshow to the game.

Bowden will never want to leave

Just listen to the man, every year it’s another stupid a$$ excuse. If I start to loose more than 1 game a year. If we stop competing for championships, i’ll leave. I want to coach [Insert QB] senior year. He’ll make up some dumb ass reason every year to come back. I stop listen to Bowden about 3 years ago, when sadly I admitted to myself what I already knew, the guy is FOS.

by nappygoat on Nov 21, 2009 4:36 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

100000% correct, and he will be back with more excuses next season.

Ann, Tommy, Terry, and the PR firm will be out in force with talking points about how the honorable thing to do is buyout Jimbo and bring back Bobby for another year. We will probably escape it, but we’ll be going through all these headaches one more time.

by 38Noles on Nov 21, 2009 7:24 PM EST up reply actions

Why is no one saying that it simply makes no sense for BB to come back?

The offense is run by Fisher. We will have new defense and special teams coaches. What possible reason could there be for Bobby to hang around? Where does he fit in? All emotion aside, this is simply the perfect time to make a complete transition. This is a complete no-brainer, yet not even mentioned by a single commentator or announcer.

A Thought, FSUn..

While I understand your reasoning as far as if BB wins at Florida, I do think that at this point the river has soured enough to the point where the university might still only offer him a limited extension anyway? I mean, it seems to me that with Wetherell out anyway, there is a definite chance that there are those who are sober enough to still make the call and send him off anyway even if he DOES get one more year. I mean, after all the hand-wringing and the “writing on the wall” kind of stuff, is that not also a possibility as to what may happen? I think Jimbo’s proved himself enough, and I know I’m not the only person…

Lonnie Pryor had a very nice game

I think we should have run the ball more with him as both of his rushes went for TDs (2 for 2). :)

Seriously, though he had a solid game, not only with the 2 TDs (incl. showing that speed and burst on the long TD option run), but did well in giving EJ an outlet out of the backfield and a pretty good job at picking up the blitzers and/or helping an OT by chipping a wide rusher.

Serious Q, who's been more disappointing this year ND or FSU

both had fairly high expectations coming into the season and neither will come close to reaching them.

ND’s may have bee higher, but they also had the much easier schedule, so I’ll go with them.

The pre-season vote on here said that 8-4 was the expecatations and sitting at 6-5 meaning we finish likely 2 games below that (with a miracle getting us to within one game); whereas ND were all saying anything less than 9-3 would be a catastrophe (and they are below that already.

ND is more disappointing because....

Expectations were low for us; while Lou Doltz was predicting on Gameday that ND would play the NC game against uf
ND lost to NAVY; at HOME. Even during the Faust years ND didn’t lose to a service academy; ND used to be criticised for scheduling service academy “cupcakes.”

A. (trying this “numbering” scheme, bear with me if I get it wrong) I am an FSU fan, not ND
2. I really enjoyed their misery, as opposed to any sadness about their struggles.
d. What were RATIONAL expectations for them anyway? Really, other then all the idiots who put them in the top 10 after winning 2 games in a row, who really thought they would make a BCS bowl bc they deserved it and not because of their draw?
Green. Most of us knew our D would be this bad, but with an offense like we have, 6-6 is unacceptable.

If he planed on next year being his last why is he fighting so hard for it, when we are falling short on our goals? If he truly supports the transition then why is he looking for his own DC candidates? One more year should not matter if he actually wanted to turn over control.
