EJ Manuel's arm
During the Maryland game I noticed several times that EJ's throws had very little zip and seemed to a long time to reach the receiver. Fortson in particular had to wait forever for one of these rainbows to reach him and it was nearly intercepted (one similar pass later was). Is this the best we can expect from EJ? Is he playing through an injury? Is this the only way he can be accurate at this point in his career? I don't follow recruiting very closely so all I have seen of Manuel is this season. My best guess is that at this point he isn't quite accurate enough to be able to throw the ball on a line, but I'd appreciate any thoughts you guys have on the subject. I can't help but think EJ's passes are going to be the best thing that ever happened to Joe Haden and the rest of the Gator DBs (though that will probably be the least of our worries on Saturday).

All I know
Is that if he plays that poorly on Saturday our offense will be shut out.
"It boils down to one of two things: It's either the horses or the jockeys. And we think we have some pretty good horses."
I disagree
Early in the game, EJ was actually very accurate. He was hitting his receivers on short and mid-range passes on exactly the right shoulder. That’s a sign of an accurate passer when they can catch and turn in the correct direction without adjustment. I’d also like to call to your attention an early pass where EJ planted it between 2 defenders right into Beau’s facemask. He couldn’t have put it more on a line than that. Not every pass needs to go 500mph and look like a cannon. Even with his 3 INTs, EJ still had a 63% completion %.
Agree, but he threw a soft ball all game, he looked much better against Wake.

Newplayer...
I would be interested in your thoughts on this one. If I remember correctly you seem to always have good posts on Qb mechanics. thanks.

noles 4 life u dig? Because....
the game was not broadcast in my area I was unable to DVR this game so I can only go on what I remember about Manuel. The only knock on Manuel when he came here was his mechanics. He always had a high release point(he threw above his ear), and he also had a bit of a hitch in his throwing motion. The hitch seems to be gone and the release point has also lowered a bit which is a credit to Fisher. The main problem this weekend though was his floating of the ball. Manuel is not flicking his wrist aka putting zip on the end of some passes. Flicking it means to roll it smoothly off the rotating fingers in natural flow of the wrist snap. I was not seeing that this weekend. Also in a perfect throw the elbow leads the throw..meaning during the motion, Manuel’s elbow should go above his shoulder line and accelerate ahead of his wrist. If the elbow travels below that shoulder-to- shoulder line to the front, it will not get ahead of the wrist and therefore it will not “lead” the throw. This is not good and happened a few times this weekend. They have been working on Manuel’s mechanics though and I think he will be fine. Here’s some good things about him.
His footwork looks good and his mobility is excellent(mobility doesn’t just mean can he scramble for gains it also means can he step inside and outside the pocket and extend a play)
His leadership ability is off the charts. I have heard from numerous people that this kid is mature beyond his years and just has the “it” factor.
Ponder getting injured might actually be a blessing in disguise. Fisher can now truly evaluate Manuel in a game and see how he progresses through his throws and offensive reads and can also correct any other problems in his throwing motion. I think this kid is the real deal even though he had some growing pains this weekend.
I will really be paying close attention to Manuel this weekend and obviously will be able to DVR the game and take a second look at some things. Hopefully some of this helps though.

In his defense, some of those throws were long throws to the sideline.
They did seem to lack zip, but that is a difficult throw to make – and at the same time put the right amount of velocity and touch on the pass.
Thanks for the feedback guys, especially newplayer
I thought Manuel looked better against Wake too, but I was thinking maybe the problems were not as obvious on TV.
Either way, the consensus seems to be that he’ll be a good one and I agree.
I pick the confidence
I do not think strength is a problem for him.
I agree, I don't think it is strength..I think he's just getting a feel for the game again.
It’s funny because the pass that stands out to me as being the “softest” was the INT he threw in the wake game.
I’m pretty sure Jimbo was able to adequately judge his arm strength in the recruiting process, so I’ll defer to him for that anyway.
