Florida State Football 2009 Could Have Been A Lot Worse Than It Was
This is my first fanpost here, but I'm a mixed martial arts blogger here on the SBN network. I must say that TN is the best college football site I've ever come across and I've been coming here for a while now being that I'm a die hard Seminole fan. I reside in North Carolina, but I'm Native American, hence my allegiance to the Noles. I'm just as sick about this season as all of you that come to this site everyday. However, as bad as this season has been, it could have been a lot worse or a lot better depending on how you look at things. Check out some interesting points below:
1. Of the 6 losses, 3 of them were only by 6pts or less.
2. FSU could have just as easily gone 9-3 with this excuse for a defense while playing the 3rd toughest schedule in the nation. Then one of those 3 losses belongs to South Florida...enough said.
3. On the flipside, FSU could have easily been 2-10 at this point with potential losses to UNC, NCSU, Maryland, and the dreadful Jacksonville St. game.
4. The offense(with all of the starters present) is definitely elite status and it was good to get EJ some playing time. That will be invaluable when he eventually becomes the starter.
5. The defense gave up 31 pts per game on average this year. We do have good athletes on defense. If the new DC(whomever it may be) can get that average to say 21 pts per game then things will definitely be looking up for the Noles in 2010.
6. Korey Mangum will not be back next year :)

Definitely aware of how close we were to losing all of those games.
Its sad really but like I said on another post, as bad as this year as been and as bad as it COULD have been, we have a lot of positives to take away from it and need to keep things in perspective.
Despite our struggles on the field AND the fact that many of our coaches are worthless on the recruiting trail, we’ve continued to either get or come in second or 3rd for some of the best players in the state of Florida and in the country. Now obviously, coming in second for someone in recruiting SUCKS, but on the flipside one would have to imagine that once we actually start winning more consistently and have a full staff on deck, a lot of those second place finishes will become first place victories.
Oh
Without a doubt…several positives indeed….
1. The effort the guys put in on defense all year..regardless of how poorly coached they are lets me know that once they receive the proper guidance…they’ll be back amongst the best.
2. Heart and will to win….several times this year they could have folded….the UNC game…the NCSU game…the Maryland game…
3. Again, we are bowl eligible with one of the worst defenses in the country that played the 3rd toughest schedule in the nation…in a conference that’s more of a defensive conference.

we saw this kind of logic before
so excuse the cynicism that comes. In 2006, when FSU also went 6-6, five of the six losses were by 7 or fewer points, with only the infamous Wake Forest loss being by more than a TD. We got the logic of being just a player or two away, the kind of player who could make those one or two plays a game to get that extra score or prevent one by the opponent.
been there, heard that.

Teams may change
but the results have not. I have to agree with Wild on this one. I think Wild got it exactly right.
REALLY!
The only silver lining is…
1. Bobby MAY be gone!
2. We WILL be getting a new DC and staff.
3. For now, we are still getting recruits.
We have been close the last couple of years, it’s time to get over the hump, and that starts with coaching!
Christian Ponder got us a bowl game
2009 Rays Baseball: Welp.....we'll try again in 2010
2009 FSU Football: Seriously, Bobby. Go Away.
Damn him

as long as someone can come in and start at safety.
mangum was horrible, but none of his backups really stood out.
worst case scenario, we end up with another mangum back there
It's going to be completely different
Korey Mangum was a bad player, but he was also in the most failure-prone position on the field. Mickey’s defense made the rover a dead man against a modern day offense. We even made a 1st-2nd round talent like Myron Rolle look bad at times in this scheme. There will be no rover position in our new DC’s defense.

excellent point
I was hard on Myron Rolle due to his incoming hype, but he was setup to fail.
He didn’t have more than 1 or 2 career picks and didn’t seem to possess good ball skills, but at least he was in position from time to time (could’ve had 2 or 3 against UM last year).
I honestly can’t recall a single play in Mangum’s year where he was close to a pick. Not even close.

Well
I guess after the last couple games, at least Mangum had more tackles than Myron had picks….which I think was in doubt until the UF game.
Does this count as a tackle?

This could have been an 0-12 season
If we had never forced Jeff Bowden out and made at least a half assed effort to get our business in order this season would have been a program killer.
If our offense was even at the level of 2007 I think we would have been in danger of 0-12. It would have come down to one of our opponents handing us a game.
another way of looking at is
we were 4-0 against the bad teams on our schedule, although 2 of those we literally won in the last min. We went 2-6 against the bowl teams. Interestingly, the 2 wins came on the road. At 6-6 you can always look back and say we could have won 3 more or lost 3 more. But that is one reason I say 8-4 is a very good record for us next yr w/ our schedule
I just read through this thread.
The kind of pessimism evidenced here is reflected in FSUn’s comments that we will not win a NC in his lifetime.
I think it’s time for a little of the “old” guy’s historical perspective:
First, our recruiting base is Florida. In fact, for FSU, it’s both Florida and south Georgia, and comprises one of the very top recruiting areas in the country.
The reason miami won NC’s under 5 different staffs was Florida HS recruiting combined with decent coaching.
The reason UF has been dominant lately is Florida HS recruiting combined with decent coaching, while both miami and FSU are down.
The reason FSU had a “dynasty” was Florida HS recruiting when first uf, then miami, was down (by NCAA sanction).
Look at the scores of the 95, 96, and 97 FSU-miami games. They weren’t even competitive. They were so far behind us as a program at that point that we actually felt sorry for them. Someone might have thought they would never recover to NC caliber in their lifetime.
Now look at the 98, 99, and 2000 games. Once the recruiting handicap was lifted, they bounced right back, under a new (but not brilliant or extraordinary) staff.
FSU still has its natural advantages— more, since (1) our biggest rival for south GA players, UGA, seems determined to mire itself in medciocrity with Richt’s staff and (2) Coley can flat out recruit SoFla.
I give it 3 years before we’re top 5 and in the NC hunt again.
I would say UF has more than 'decent' coaching
