A sad day.

I hope the group behind him man’s up and steps their play up for the rest of the year. They owe him that.

That was tough to watch

God bless the guy… I wish him and his family nothing but the best. I expect Doak to be rockin’ on Nov. 21st as the fans show their love and support for Mickey.

Why weren't there any reporters asking relevent questions?!

There was a lot of akward silence. It seems like someone could have come up with something in the 8 hours before Mickey was made available. That was very disappointing.

OH YEAAHH!

by TBfisherman on Nov 3, 2009 7:18 PM EST reply actions

Agree with you TB.

Not that they didn’t know what was going to happen. Forget about not having a journalism school, that was poorly handled. Why couldn’t someone at least say “Thanks Coach, for all you’ve done,” or any other supportive superlative? Damn! I hope he finds contentment in his retirement.

????????

I realize that’s nothing makes up for scheming and being prepared, but do any of you have a little feeling that those guys may give us a first quarter of stops that may give our offense a chance to grab a lead? Then have to hang on for dear life. I played the game so I understand what goes into being prepared to play and execute but I also know that emotion is a big part of playing. The emotions will eventually wear off and it’ll get back to just simply playing the game but we may get a good quarter to a quarter in a half that allows us to get a lead.

by 21nole24 on Nov 3, 2009 7:22 PM EST reply actions

NO

I think they already play extremely hard!

I feel sorry for the players.

by Bud Elliott on Nov 3, 2009 7:23 PM EST up reply actions

I think in some cases defenses that are physically overmatched can rely on effort and desire and play above their heads. But that presumes a defense that is otherwise prepared and just doesn’t quite have the athleticism.

We have the opposite problem. A defense with enough athleticism to be average or a little better, but that is never properly prepared.

by 38Noles on Nov 3, 2009 7:28 PM EST up reply actions

I also think they play hard.

Im just saying sometimes you get a little extra, its not something I can explain its just something more that you have in you. The I simply refuse to be blocked, again make sure everyone understands that I said multiple times a quarter. BC wasnt better than us they werent more prepared than we were offensively but they were playing with a little extra emotion and once we settled down they couldnt stop us but for that quarter they were able to make us uncomfortable. I realize offensively they were more prepared than our Defense. Im throwing it out there I wont be shocked either way but it wouldnt shock me to get a couple stops early in the game.

by 21nole24 on Nov 3, 2009 7:44 PM EST reply actions

Nah, BC was no aberation from the norm of this season

Regardless of how bad an offense is or has been, they play their best against our defense because our defense is just that bad. We can ‘hope’ for some type of miraculous emotional boost, but I sincerely don’t think you can get any more emotional and hyped than what I see out of Watson, Bradham, Carr and Reid on a weekly basis. There’s no lack of desire or will to compete on our football team IMO.

And that is a pure indictment of coaching

and also recruiting (#s of juniors and seniors on D?)

by ricobert1 on Nov 3, 2009 9:20 PM EST up reply actions

I completely agree with you

I played basketball though—but when you wanted it more than life itself—no one could stop you.

But to play at that level for a whole game—especially having 11 people play at that level a whole game—you are also right to say it coulnd’t happen for maybe a quarter or a half.

But never underestimate emotion. I would love to play against these guys who believe that systems and schemes are all there is—they’d easily be overcome by desire—for at least a quarter or two ;)

That vidoe breaks my heart

Seeing Mickey like that just hurts. I really hope the defense steps up & do something for this man.

The talent he's produced/coached is unrivaled.

A friend of mine who cover the team said it was a great but somber moment. I imagine that’s why there wasn’t more questions.

Its not like the defense was awful last year, so did the coaches just lose it

Or did we underestimate the difference a handful of guys lost would make? Though Myron Rolle was not exciting to some, he had lots of tackles, and I am sure Darius McClure was better than the safeties we have now. Derrick Nicholson, though nothing great, also had lots of tackles. No doubt we all know what a difference Everette Brown made on the line. I do not recall if Neefy Moffitt had manyy tackles, but like the safeties, had to have been better than what is there now at defensive end.

I'm trying to find a good post to link you

The defense was far worse than the NCAA rankings will have you believe. It was awful against modern offenses like the spread. The slide really started last year, which is what caused FSUn to predict that this would be the worst defense of Mickey’s era. I’ll keep looking for a good link for you, and anyone else that can find one should link for him.

Actually, the size matters articles are perfect

Read part one and part two if you haven’t done so already. They’re pinned on the left side of the page. Lots of great stats from last years defense.

Everette Brown

Also we have nobody who has even come close to replacing EB. If he was still playing and sacking the QB that would at least reduce the time the other team had to pass. He would also command a double team so if you overload the opposite side with the blitz you gain a bigger advantage. If you blitz on his side you have a better chance of someone coming untouched than you do with the same play now. Not saying we would be great with EB still here, but we would be better than we are now.

Wow

This was tough to watch. You can truly tell that coaching has meant a lot to him – and to some of his players. Hope the retirement years are kind.

That video is just..

absolutely heartbreaking. Mickey knows he has his family to take care of now, but you can see the hurt in his face talking about leaving the "Noles with his boys standing behind him. While FSU will continue on and will again rise back to its place amongst the nations elite, a little bit of FSU’s soul will perish on Feb 10, 2010.

Thank you for everything Mickey. As a lifelong devoted fan for 3 decades, a FSU Alumni and a man who bleeds Garnet and Gold, I will miss you.

Unrelated question, but I noticed that Texas has a small DL yet they have a top ranked defense. What are some of the things that muschamp does to compensate for their size?

by marlins44 on Nov 4, 2009 4:20 AM EST reply actions

who is the player that puts his hand on mickeys shoulder?

thought that was a nice gesture………and imagine things like that can happen without a PR firm planning them.

Well, gosh, it's a weight off of everybody. I think everybody that is an FSU fan or a coach or a player, this takes a weight off the shoulder. But what does that mean? Seven more days of peace?
