Florida State Update 11.05.09 (Odds and Ends)
- Some surprising offensive numbers.
- Some encouraging defensive stats?
- A player leaving the team that we somehow missed a few weeks back?
- A good collection of links.
Sometimes I have links I want to share and odds and ends that individually don't justify a new story, but collectively, I'm sure you'll find something you enjoy. Clemson preview, Q&A, and Gambling column all to come.

You probably remember a few weeks back when MattDNole posted his response to Andrew Carter, regarding a comparison between the emaciated Jeff Bowden offense and Fisher's new offense. I now have an updated graph, showing Jeff Bowden's final 21 conference games and Jimbo's first 21 conference games:
New FEI Ratings
Brian Fremeau providing the best statistical analysis on the net.
So the offense moves up from 4th to 3rd. Georgia Tech overtakes Notre Dame by hanging 56 and 600 yards on Vandy in Nashville (which hey, it's Vandy, but nobody else had come close). Note that Clemson is squarely in the middle of the offenses we have faced. Not that it will matter much.
This is interesting, however, as The defense actually moves up, from 104th to 98th! How? Probably because their performance against UNC and BC isn't quite as bad considering both offenses continue to improve, and GTech and Miami's offenses continue to dominate. Still, 98th is ridiculous and we're a full standard deviation away from Duke! If you're curious who the #99-120 defenses are...

Clemson crushed FSU in recruiting in 2006 and 2007. FSU is paying for that now.
Good Q&A's:

Aaron Gresham's career is over.
I guess this was already out there, but he will be medically disqualified to avoid possible permanent damage to his mobility, which could occur if he had another knee injury. I updated the Scholarship Chart.

Good for that rule.
You would hate to see a guy miss out on college because of a sever knee injury suffered.

Guys at Block C
are always crazy. Love checking out that blog. Also FSUncensored you misspelled surprising in “Some surpsising offensive numbers”
"Crazy" = "Unintelligent inbreds who wouldn't know a decent blog if it repeatedly pointed out that their coaches are lying bastards."
I'm easily amused
and humor like this is what does it.

They definitely hate us over there as well.
They are disgusted with us because we cheer for another team.
I hate them because they run a terrible blog and can’t put together a coherent sentence without profanity.
Don't hate.
Clearly you’re just jealous of them because they came up with the idea of rubbing a doorstop and running down a wheelchair ramp before we did.

Best Conference in Football?
According to Mr. Fremeau the ACC statistically has some good teams. Here is the breakdown of the Top 25 by conference.
6 – ACC
5 – PAC 10
3 – BIG 12
3 – BIG 10
3 – SEC
3 – OTHER
2 – BIG EAST
Now I wouldn’t go around bragging that the ACC is the best conference in football but it should belong in the conversation.
And it isn't even close
Not sure if averages is the best way to measure, but here is the SOS average base on conference.
ACC – 7.3
SEC – 43
PAC 10 – 43.6
BIG 12 – 44.7
BIG 10 – 48.7
OTHER – 64
BIG EAST – 96.5
FSUn maybe you can ask your buddy if he has any type of formula that ranks conferences.
I don't know about those numbers.
There are lots of ways to play around with statistics. The UFs of the world do like to play the first half of their season against high school temas for some reason. Maybe it’s to help them stay healthy and go undefeated. We’ll have to see how they hold up when FSU goes to cow pasture — I mean swamp. Back in the day (this decade), I thought about going to UF but struck me as being a university put in the middle of a big cow pasture for no apparent reason at all. Their administration made me feel like I was in line at the unemployment office. Their buildings were all old and musty smelling. Anyway, let’s just see what Christian and the boys do when they get to the cow pasture.
Do you actualy know how he goes about calculating those rankings?

There is no bias that goes into them.
It's just one way of churning the numbers
It might be the best thing out there, but any statistical number crunching has its faults. I don’t know that the ACC is the best conference in football. Maybe it is the most competitive, which is what the FEI seems to favor. We have several good teams (Miami, GT, Clemson, VT, Wake, UNC, etc.). Many of them would be competitive with any team in the country, and our teams play tough schedules to prove it. Tell all of recruits who are looking at Bama, TN, Auburn, UF, LSU, GA, Ole Miss, etc. that the ACC is the best confernce in the country and I don’t know that they’ll agree. Tell it to most sports writers and college football fans, and I bet most people will agree that the SEC is the best from top to bottom. Compare the turnout at a TN home game to an FSU home game. There’s a difference.
I double majored in physics and math as an undergrad. I also worked for several years as a computer systems analyst—analyzing ways of number crunching. I’m just sayin’ that people who are good with numbers can take a given set of input data and show you different results. The numbers you posted are interesting and something to look at. There somewhat surprising. That’s all I’m saying.
Most recruits, fans and sports writers are clueless.
They form their opinions based off of what ESPN tells them. These ranking are a far better than any others I have ever seen.
