Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder suffered a separated right shoulder here on Saturday night during the Seminoles' 40-27 loss at Clemson.

FSU backup quarterback E.J. Manuel, a redshirt freshman, said after the game he expects to start next week when FSU travels to Wake Forest. After the defeat against Clemson, Ponder told Manuel to be ready to start, Manuel said.

Is that it for Ponder's year

Does this mean another blowout to UF instead of a possible shootout?

by nolestuff on Nov 8, 2009 12:35 AM EST reply actions

Hrm, you're giving UF too much credit.

I don’t think we’ll lose worse than Vany did. I really don’t think the Gators are that great this year. Of course, we’re not very good at all, but 14-60 is a bit inflated… maybe on both sides now that Ponder is out!

by smash! on Nov 8, 2009 10:38 AM EST up reply actions

Vanderbilt's defense is much better than ours

Our offense will have a tough time staying on the field against that D resulting in the game becoming extremley ugly.

by RaysnNoles on Nov 8, 2009 11:55 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I just don't think UF's offense is great this year and I don't like Tebow's arm so the long threat...

which has killed our D, is lesser than some of the other teams that have beaten us. With Ponder out, who knows what our offense will look like, but I’m just questioning their O. They’ve only scored 60 once this year, against Charleston Southern. And we might have a slightly better D than CSouthern… maybe.

by smash! on Nov 9, 2009 6:34 PM EST up reply actions

Ponder is probably done for the year

Who knows if we can still score points on them. EJ has two games to get some experience, he might play decent enough so it isn’t too embarrassing. I’m not saying we won’t skip a beat without Ponder in there, but we haven’t seen enough of EJ to make a judgment. The problem is, as it has been all season, is our defense. We just won’t be able to stop them. Hopefully EJ comes in and has a decent game. Its obvious we won’t win the game, but we at least get to see what we have with EJ if Ponder gets hurt again next year.

by Squaaad Up!! on Nov 8, 2009 9:54 AM EST up reply actions

Might as well just shut Ponder down

We’re not going to make it to 6 wins, so 4 is as good as anything else.

Florida will give us a “set the program back 10 years” sort of beating. Bowden deserves all the jeers the UF fans will give him.

That was a tough hit that Ponder delivered.

He held his ground and the Clemson DB went flying out of bounds.

Always tough to see a key player get injured, I wish him a speedy recovery (just not the Sam Bradford type – hopefully a full recovery).

by GoGators15 on Nov 8, 2009 12:48 AM EST reply actions

Might want to rewatch that.

Ponder got crumpled as McDaniel blew threw him and his momentum carried him out of bounds. Seriously there’s a video on ESPN.com. Ponder stood up to it like a man but let’s not pretend he was some immovable object.

by DannyFordisGod on Nov 8, 2009 2:01 AM EST up reply actions

crumpled?

did he crumple like a Clemson dream of a National Title every year?

Oh wait…that is crumble. Sorry bro.

by LincolnHighNole on Nov 8, 2009 3:49 AM EST up reply actions

Like this retort terrible

A Gate makes a comment about Ponder holding his ground. A Clempsun fan then used the adjective crumpled when describing the play.

I used the adjective to describe the the dreams of Clempson fans.

Yeah, I said it. Come get some.

You're an idiot

He got crushed. It’s okay, McDaniel crushes everyone. It doesn’t make Ponder any less of a man.

As for what that has to do with the dreams of Clemson fans… I’m not really sure.

Ponder delivered?

McDaniel did all the “delivering” there. Hell, he pointed at Ponder and told him it was coming.

Stop!

stop bouncing on McDaniels balls. We get it! You like him. This is borderline inappropriate like the Tebow-Joiner relationship.

You’re making us all look bad with your comments. Ponder got run over plain and simple along with our team last night. All of us have no room to talk especially after we are a under .500 team and Clemson is probably going to play for an ACC Championship. Accept reality.

Ponder got creamed on that hit and that was the Clemson players intent

It was as clean a hit as you’ll see in football – so don’t misunderstand, I’m not calling out the Clemson guy at all – that’s football.

I agree

With this season unfolding the way it has, there is no reason for him to risk further injury. I have a lot of respect for Ponder, he’s been beat up all season and always bounced back and been a strong leader. On the bright side, at least this gives EJ an oppourtunity for some playing time since we only have Ponder for one more season..hopefully.

by Squaaad Up!! on Nov 8, 2009 9:30 AM EST up reply actions

I think this assures another season for Ponder

He won’t get the draft level he would hope to achieve with an incomplete resume like this so I really like the chances of seeing him next season.

by diablonole on Nov 8, 2009 9:33 AM EST up reply actions

Agreed

I guess I’m getting used to hoping for the best but expecting the worst from this team. This draft is going to be very deep with QBs and common sense dictates that he would stay. He could easily be a first round pick with another year of development under Jimbo.

FSUn was rigt about Ponder's ribs....

He couldn’t make the throws. FWIW, I think a healthy Ponder would have won this game. It wasn’t like our WRs weren’t getting seperation, He just had to put to much air under the deep balls to get then out there, giving their DBs time to catch up. C’est la vie. I hope he gets better soon…

Ponder should have let him run in for score

They did on the next play or play after anyway. Ponder was hurt before that crushing hit from McDaniel but I think that was the one that sealed the end of his season. Clemson punished a lot of FSU players in the second half, lots of big hitting out there.

I also think this ends our season win total, not to say that EJ is not good and could surprise me but I think Wake is a better team and Maryland is a toss up. Florida will crush us and post the stats that will give the savior another Heisman (I think this bugs me the most) I say we abandon the defensive game plan and just practicing our eye gouges in prepartion for Tebow…..because that is just part of the game…right Urban.

I take solice in the fact that this debacle ends now without a bowl and FSU can begin the long journey back to becoming one of the nation’s elite again.

Get well Ponder……Kick ass EJ….and Go Noles

by fsufrenzy911 on Nov 8, 2009 8:51 AM EST reply actions

Why?

I want to see EJ develop too but with the way Ponder played this year how do you justify sitting him simply to give EJ some reps? I like EJ’s potential and at least we can use these last 3 games to see what we’ve got with him but I have no issue with his playing time thus far.

As hurt as he looked

I think you give EJ a shot. We were expected to lose this game. Once it was clear he shouldnt be out there (and likely would have avoided the injury to his shoulder) we should have made the move. Nothing is more important than his health. That separated shoulder probably cost us a realistic shot at a bowl game. My main concern is that he comes back healthy whenver that is. Shoulders are tricky.

Makes a passionate enough fan to care/comment but ignorant/uninformed enough to...

study, break down film, scout, etc… ask a simple question or two and make an observation;

In the games against what was expected to be superior or equal talent we ALWAYS implode when the pressure is on. The Miami game was winnable, hell… 1st and goal from extra point range… and clock management sucked, we ran around like it was our first game (it was!) and dropped a catchable pass to pull it out in the end.

BC? USF? we should of beat both, supposed talent wise that is, but when it counted there was a lapse in good play execution.

GaTech was a shoot-out and we tit-for-tat’d them until it counted. They found a way.

UNC & NC State were games we should of won. yeah yeah UNC has a good defense. but against who? they probably suffered from some ESPN prime time dreamland syndrome and couldn’t shake it when things got tough.

Clemson… always a bridesmaid. They did everything in their power to give us this game. Ponder did not have to pass for insane numbers last night. After interception #2 I think it was clear downfield passes were risky. We had a chance at 27-24, a good chance. The damned offsides that brought back the interception/TD was killer. I said when that play happened… this is a game changer. not brilliance on my part, but history dictated that would be the result. The defense was decent for 3qtrs. ( I know, 4qtr game) in my opinion, if the offense had of capitalized on some of the gifts we received or at least didn’t turnover the ball 2 of the times we did, ??? maybe the D would of kept the fire in their belly for the whole 4qtrs.

OK… Is this Bobby’s fault? Is this Jimbo’s? or even Ponder? There was things I think in hindsight people would of done different (like Ponder’s attempt at a tackle which will end his season) If Bobby is going to be hung out to dry for things, then the blame should be shared. What exactly would of been different if BB was not on the sidelines last night? All this talk about a new DC and what Jimbo’s stamp will be… maybe, maybe not. I hope and pray that we do not go into a tailspin like Nebraska (the other team of the 90’s)
It seems like blame has to be assigned… like that makes it all make sense. Well, in my humble opinion the blame is the complete lack of heart a large number of the fanbase seems to have and some players who are there for the “glory & exposure” of playing for a bigtime program. I think people need to get it through their head, times they are a changin’. Nebraska, Michigan, Notre Dame (no, they are not back), Tennessee, maybe Oklahoma is going into a lull, hell, how many years was the great ‘Bama in decline? and yes, FSU… maybe this group is just runnin’ with the pack now. It is shameful to see what schedules a Boise St. TCU & Utah plays and they are considered top 5 or 10 programs. In a few years I guarantee you a USC or a Texas or an Ohio St. or LSU will have happen what is happening to us.

These new programs are hungry. They see enough games and boxscores to know anybody can win on a given night. GaTech is having a good run here, but that stupid triple option will get figured out and then they will fall back in the pack. VaTech I believe is ready for some mediocrity, so is JoPa and those N.Lions You watch next weekend against Wake Forest. They have the same record as we do… but they will be poised and hungry. Without Ponder… will we do a USF and start a qb who comes out guns blazin’??? I really doubt it. I fear it will be ugly. Thank God i didn’t commit to the tix somebody down there was holding for me until Monday. I can watch the debacle here at home thank you.

FSU is at a crossroads, more now than 3 or 4 weeks ago or at the start of the season. We had a chance to salvage a season and could of managed a 7-5 tally and 8-5 with a bowl… but, even when a game was gift wrapped by a team that is notorious for doing just that, we folded and looked pitiful in the process. Win 1 for Mick? yeah… we saw what that got us. This team has little heart and that is what hurts. Maybe it will take BB going and a whole new regime to come in and find their legs… but don’t fool yourselves into thinking NEXT YEAR is some big thing coming. In my humble, and uneducated opinion, this will be a Michigan style rebuild and maybe even an Oklahoma or USC job (took 4 or more years to become relevant again) Michigan is a good reference… Rich Rodriguez was considered a genius by many… and he may yet turn them around, but those who foolishly thought THIS was the year… ??? hmmmm and as good of a coordinator as Jimbo may be, he is not proven at running a whole god**** program.

question??? really, what now?

by wolffbird7 on Nov 8, 2009 8:54 AM EST reply actions

There is no silver bullet....all good things take time

However, I disagree with the players having no heart. They played hard, and the defensive players were at a severe disadvantage because they have very little coaching and that is mostly bad coaching. Those players sacrificed their bodies last night on play after play, I think its a little disrespectful to say they have no heart.

And I don’t think so of your examples hold water….OU alone was in the national championship last year, USC shows no signs of weakening nor Texas, OSU gets 10 a year almost guaranteed. If you are expecting a team to be undefeated every year like Boise St, TCU or other similiar ones well you need to look no further than the conference and teams they play. College football parity is becoming the great equalizer though and the term on any given Saturday holds truer now than I ever remember.

So what now……a lot of things need to, get the head coach in place, continue to refine and build this offense, get defensive coaching in place and starting coaching these players to play real defense, schedule some cupcakes (we play enough talent in the ACC, let catch a break every now and again), continue to evaluate and recruit talent and in a few years we will have the ten win seasons again, the BCS bowls again and yes, just maybe someday we will be in the NC hunt again

I feel your pain wolffbird7…..but I think we may finally hit bottom at the end of the season when we lose the last bastion of our dominance years by not making a bowl. I believe this will clean the slate and let us begin anew.

Go Noles!

by diablonole on Nov 8, 2009 9:23 AM EST up reply actions

I meant about Oklahoma and Ohio State or Texas...

That 1 or more of them is just as likely to have happen to them what is happening to us now. I am sure Michigan would of never thought they would be humbled like they have… and Nebraska? I mean, they could always pencil in 10 as well.

The heart comment was on the season as a whole. There was enough times in the previous 8 games when there was alot of lazy play (mostly defense) That is why I say last night was more telling… we had passion, but just couldn’t take advantage of a team who is so known for collapse. Somebody has to win and somebody has to lose… easy enough. But there is still so much hatred for FSU from the original ACC members, that it is still a BIG WIN to beat us… we view only UF, VaTech, maybe GaTech & Clemson as important… USF game was an example of that. I do not mean to say majority of players… but there are enough that play large chunks of the game who just seem to go through the motions. Next week will really be interesting… win or lose, true CHARACTER will come out when they play Wake.

2010...

I guess we shall see. Then what? I know, RECRUITING. still dealing with the old regime. I have heard the Jeff Bowden excuse even today. Maybe it will right the ship… that is why they play the game

by wolffbird7 on Nov 8, 2009 10:25 AM EST up reply actions

OF COURSE YOU STILL HEAR ABOUT JEFF BOWDEN

How many years has Jimbo been here? Figure that out! See, you like to blame the fanbase, you like to blame the players, and suggest that maybe Bobby has to go. Why dont you sack up, and admit that BOBBY HAS A LOT TO DO WITH WHAT IS THE PROBLEM. Seriously, respect and admiration are fine. But if you are going to write, try being objective. It is so unbelievably annoying at this point. Not even 4 years since Jimbo gets here, we have a top 10 offense in the country. THIS IS AFTER HAVING 4 GOD DARN plays in our playbook that was written in crayon! Wait until we get a DC who can actually gameplan because he doesnt have much more important responsibilities at home. Your inability to ever put the blame square on BB for even a second is disgusting.

IF he isnt on the sidelines, Mickey would have retired last year. Jody Allen would have been fired, and so would Chuck. That is 4 coaches right there. I would bet my bottom dollar that the 4 new guys that would have been brought in would have coached up that defense so that Clemson would have scored anywhere near as many points. We also would have had a head start on recruiting. Sure, there is SOME blame to share, but the lions share is on Bobby. Why dont you go back to insulting the chances of Ponders pro potential?

opinion...

and what did I write? I guess there goes NFL draft this year. I think that was written by a few people. One of the posters was a one trick pony and kept saying… that’s right, FIRE JIMBO. I kept looking for who was arguing with. Must of been the lil devil on his left shoulder or in his ear. I guess this site speaks gospel truth and you are only admitted to the “cool group” if you drink the kool-aid. It will happen. Bobby will be gone for Christ’s sake (Christ, not Christian) It would get awful boring if nobody asked questions. And finally… with Veteran’s Day so close… these guys are all old enough to be in the service. They are privileged to have this opportunity. It would be wonderful, after playing 10 years of little league, jr high and high school ball, to have people tell me that i have little or no blame in STUPID & LAZY play. Mangum ??? a glaring example… is it his coaching that makes him fall down 5 yards from a tackle? watching a receiver run past you and getting twisted like a pretzel? how many times has this happened? You do that in military and you can die or if it is stupidity or laziness… cause you to be in dog house until you are discharged. Schemes, shmeems… there are teams with coaching that is comparable to ours (yes, not all are great) and they have players who rise above out of pride. I don’t really care if I disgust any of you… I actualy find it fun on a sunday morning waiting for some NFL. This is a forum for opinion and speculation… I just wanna know, what should I wear for the Maryland game? black shirts? button down colar? casual T? jersey, but with only number 10 on it signifying 2010 or bust! hahaha peace my friend

by wolffbird7 on Nov 8, 2009 11:30 AM EST up reply actions

Mangum sucks

Noone disagrees. Here is the thing, you are an idiot. You continue to blather on with irrelevant tangents. Its not about the kool-aid or any other stupid euphemism for the agreement that most of us share. Different opinions have, and always be welcome (not speaking for the admins, just what I have always seen) but the fact remains, back it up with something. Dont come with the same garbage without saying why Bowden doesnt play a role in that. His aw shucks routine is rubbing off. Where the hell else is it going to come from. You refuse to answer that question. Dance all you want. Tell me how its not Bowden. If he gets the credit from the early decades, he gets the blame now. He isn’t God.

You talk about military, but the key to the military is solid leadership. Where is his supposed leadership. And dont even think about putting that on Jimbo, he is the only guy that Bobby wont allow to have head coach in the title. Maybe if Amato wasnt so busy lactating he might do something. Thats whats funny, you either argue against your own point, or you go on incoherently about something that has nothing to do with the point of the matter.

by Miaminole on Nov 8, 2009 5:57 PM EST up reply actions

"...in my humble opinion the blame is the complete lack of heart a large number of the fanbase seems to have..."

If you are referring to the Bowden supporters who want him to stay at all costs, program be damned, then I agree with you. If you are referring to the true fans who recognize that one man is not bigger than the program, and want changes made so we can turn the page, then I wholeheartedly disagree.

The triple option, or more correctly, the spread wishbone is just as effective as any pro style or Urbanish spread win ran correctly.

See Navy. They have a clear lack of talent vs teams like Notre Dame and they get it done. I’m worried what GT will look like when CPJ gets that freshman QB Jordan Luallen he recruited in there to run it. If Nesbitt had any accuracy GT’s offense would be even better. As it is, isn’t it already 1st in the FEI rankings?

Lack of heart is so far from being the problem

Seriously. That is a copout. The kids play very hard, and if you had read what we actually expected here, nobody thought we would “win one for Mickey.” That crap is overblown.

So would you call it imploding under pressure against NCST? Against UNC? When we had to score every single drive against ALL of these teams just to keep pace with our pitiful defense? Wrong again. The notion that the offense has to be perfect and better than the top 10 elite unit that they are is just deluded. I guess they aren’t subjected to the same expectations as every other team in America that plays a top 5 defense.

What would be different if Bobby weren’t on the sidelines? A whole lot, really. Entirely new defensive staff. A structure of a program that holds people accountable. A legal-rational organization rather than a patrimonial one, if you will. Not to say that Jimbo’s first year won’t have its struggles, but we will be moving in a positive direction with qualified people. We don’t know what the result would have been last night. The blame goes to nobody other than it has all year, in my mind. Ponder was hurt and trying to gut it out against a top 5 defense in the country, and we lost. Big deal. Most of us didn’t expect to win anyway.

Where do we go from here? We lose at least 2 out of the next 3 and we will be at home in December. And guess what? That’s okay! We will clean house on the defensive side, get rid of some offensive coaches, and Bobby will pack his U-Haul and head on down the road. We will hit the recruiting trail and try to salvage this class that Bobby has decimated. Our defensive players wouldn’t have gotten anything out of another month of practice and bowl game under these coaches anyway, and almost our entire offense is coming back next year. We’ll be better off not going to the bowl game. When we have a competent defensive staff next year, come back and tell me how much “heart” our guys are playing with. Or will they just be better?

from what i saw before the game EJ is very impressive. Huge guy with a great arm. Hitting his targets with authority. I really think Jimbo can find a way to win with him and I think a healthy EJ is better than a banged up ponder! By the way as much as i hated being there clemson fans have a very creative way of doing the warchant. Every time they did the warchant they choppedwith the middle finger and hollered out f@#% the seminoles> Pretty creative.

No disrespect to the Clemson posters on here lately as they seem like level headed fans

But I have seen the worst of the worst with Clemson fans. Not just towards FSU fans either, I have seen a few games there as a Clemson guest, rooting for Clemson and the level of attack they take it against any fanbase (NCST and Maryland in this case) is just ridiculous. Before we get into a “your fanbase sucks too conversation”, let me just say that I know each fan base has those types. It is just weird with Clemson though, just from my personal expierences they are just way to venomous and take things way way too far in what in the end is only a game.

by diablonole on Nov 8, 2009 9:31 AM EST up reply actions

The same can be said for USF fans

I’ve been to a few USF fans and not only are they incredibly venomous, but they don’t know much about football. Also, there are FSU fans like that too, lord knows I’ve cringed at the way some Nole fans have acted. Seems like a trend in sports overall. You can be passionate about your team without being a scumbag.

Yeah, have a friend with USF season tix

He says that the student section is the roughest in college football but also says that has to do with the drinking at the game. He said that it gets rougher as the game goes on and BAC of the fans gets higher.

by diablonole on Nov 8, 2009 9:40 AM EST up reply actions

True

but I don’t think selling beer at the game has much to do with it. When I was at FSU, which wasn’t long ago, everyone got tanked before the game and also took alcohol into the game hidden in our clothes so we could continue to drink. There have been drunk fans at football games since they started playing football. I think that people that act that way are prone to it to begin with but act worse when drinking. Whether they sell it at the game isn’t the point, people will always find a way to get drunk if they want to. I’m also not trying to single out USF fans, its just the last few years those are the only games I’ve attended so I have a small sample size.

USF commuters have a lot to drink about:)

I was at the GTech game last year and was really surprised how obnoxious their fans were. This 80 yr old man in front of me was cursing like a sailor and doing the Gator chomp the whole time, like that had anything to do with them or the game at hand. Add that to the miserable ending to that game, and it made me never want to go back to ATL again.

I was there. I am on the car on my way back to Tallahassee right now, a few notes:

1) For the most part, all the Clemson fans we encountered were pure class… at least before the game. After the game they were virtually all douches, heckling as we made our way to the car. Before, though, they were all very nice and cordial and one group of fans even gave us some food when we asked for directions to the closest food joint.

2) The atmosphere of Death Valley is waaay overhyped. I’ve been hearing about this mythical stadium for so long I figured it’d be the one away game worth going to, but I was seriously disappointed. The running down the hill bit was anticlimactic at best, and the crowd was loud but nothing that should really earn them the reputation they have. They also use their sound system well, pumping in a lot of sound. A few things that were ridiculously corny/bad: They routinely play a “roaring” sound through the system whenever something “good” happens, and it is the most pathetic sound ever. Sounds like they cut the sound out of one of the Jurassic Park movies. AAAARRGH. They also have this hilariously bad video of players superimposed egging the crowd on. It’s one of those things you have to see to appreciate, but man it is bad.

3) No matter what happens at Florida St, I can take solace in the fact FSU doesn’t rush the field when they beat an unranked sub-.500 team at home. Seriously guys, is this as good as it gets for your program? Maybe it’s just bitterness talking, but all my anger at the loss was gone when I saw them rush the field. Maybe it’s a compliment, but I just found it to be a sad commentary on their expectations.

4) Ponder. Man, I guess you all saw this at home, but he really lost this game. And I guess after winning so many games for us it was about time he lost one. The D seemed to do enough to win, but eventually the back was going to break when they kept forcing turnovers and we kept squandering the opportunities away. I know a lot of people are ragging on Mister for the offsides on the pick 6, but I am pretty sure Kyle Parker knew it was offsides so he went for the risky throw. So it’s not really a “game defining” play in my opinion.

All in all, the trip was worth it, but I was left underwhelmed by it all.

The rushing the field was perposterous

You should only be allowed to rush the field if: 1. You are unranked and 2. You beat a top 5 team at home. That’s it.

WOW...

How bad is Mangum. He is terrible. I dont understand why our coaches continue to play him when we have nick moody who is basically just as good and is younger so he can grow with experience. I think this just shows the glaring problems of our program. He routinely gets burned ala roger williams, kyler hall. I cant take the dumbass stubbornness that has got us to this point anymore. on that note, Get em’ EJ and get better CP we’ll see ya next year and hopefully we might have a defense to back you up.
