2011 Offensive Lineman Trey Pettis Commits to Florida State
Ht: 6'5
Wt:300
Jimbo Fisher knew he would have to turn around Florida State's recruiting. Just a few hours after Bobby Bowden announced his retirement, highly coveted 2011 offensive lineman Trey Pettis of Deland high school committed to the Florida State Seminoles. Pettis is 6'5" 300lbs as a high school junior and has great feet considering his size and age. That's impressive. Pettis doesn't have a pretty body but plays better than his physique looks. He is considered one of the top 10 offensive line prospects in the state for next year's recruiting season. This kid grew up a huge Florida State fan, and I am sure that Trickett and Fisher are very excited to have this commitment
He fits Florida State offensive line coach Rick Trickett's system very well and has solid potential. A few Tomahawk Nation members have watched him in person and have all had very complimentary things to say about the young offensive line prospect.

This bucks the trend of Trickett going after 260 lb linemen, for those of you upset with that approach
I like Pettis quite a bit and think he’s one of the top Jr OL in the state. I think Trickett can mold this kid into something truly special. Hopefully Trey starts talking to prospects tonight!!! Welcome aboard Trey Pettis!

Trickett will probably...
…trim him down a bit. While he seems to tower over the competition on film, he seems a bit lumbering. I didn’t think Jimbo would get a recruit this fast. Hopefully, it is a sign of good things to come. Now we need some commits on defense. Can’t wait for the DC announcement…
BTW...
…Tharinger now reporting Louids Nix to Notre Dame. Seems odd after the Weiss firing. If we are really switching to a 3-4, we need some beef on the D-line…
He committed to ND in his JR year
"It boils down to one of two things: It's either the horses or the jockeys. And we think we have some pretty good horses."
He's hilarious.
According to him, “Notre Dame is leading, but I’m still a Miami commit.”
SCALP 'EM SEMINOLES!
This is a new low
At first guys would say they are committed but still looking. Then it was committed but interested a lot in school X. Then some said they were committed, but pretty wide open. But now committed but another school is leading?? LOL.

Kinda makes you wonder if he can qualify
I am all for him going to ND instead of Miami. What sense does that make though—committing to a second school when you don’t even know who the coach is? Maybe he just wanted Miami to stop bugging him?
If he’s still unsure, maybe there’s room for more changes.
I didn't see that quote...
It’s like a guy with two cute girls. If he keeps courting both, he’ll lose both… Then again, as cut throat as recruiting is now, he may get the steak and lobster dinner twice…
Excellent!
What position on the line will he play?

Well he is 6'5" as a kid who is either an old 16 or a young 17 (HS Junior)
Trickett doesn’t like tall centers and guards, so probably right tackle.
Thanks
Uncensored, does FSU run to the right side primarily?

Thanks again.
Hopefully he becomes the first of what could be an excellent class.

yeah he will play tackle likely
based on Tricket’s system. I personally have not noticed any preference for which side FSU runs to. We are well balanced. Welcome to FSU Trey!
Site question:
Will there be a WORT tomorrow?

I think if we wait another week
we will have a lot more good news than if it were tomorrow.
Pettis probably would have committed when he was in 6th grade and not waivered.

Some retard on the Talahassee Democrat site actually suggested EJ would transfer because Bowden has retired.
hahahahaha
Come on back Ed

I loved his work in The Goonies.
I’m on my phone but is there a more flattering pic of the kid we can use?
This is a huge day for him and for FSU.

Off-topic but LOL at Dick Vitale
He just said that if Jimbo was the answer why has FSU not been better the past couple years. I mean wow…
I just heard that too.
And it is a good question if you don’t watch FSU. But i still didnt care when he said it because he has been up coach k’s butt forever.
Couple of thoughts on his ability right now
First and foremost, this kid is a junior. Young big guys don’t have the mobility to play college ball yet…goes without saying,
Still, he doesn’t grade out too highly right now for me. He pauses at the point of attack, a hesitation which stems mostly from a lack of a “killer instinct.” (think the opposite of David Spurlock). That’s ok, you can train a dog to kill.
In the run game he doesn’t use his hands well, attributable again IMO to that slight timidity.
His pass set is actually very serviceable. But being so big all he really needs to do is take away the outside by shuffling, and if the DE is dumb enough to cross his face, he can paw the guy to the ground.
Having said all this, he’s a big young kid, and Trickett sees him as a kid he can make into one of his brand of linemen. I will always acquiesce to his judgement. And I welcome him aboard Jimbo’s Jumbos!
David Banner was pretty timid too
But you didn’t want to make him angry. Wait until someone like Spikes tries to gouge his eyes. Wait until Trickett imposes some marine discipline upon him. Kill or be killed. Needless to say, I think he will become a killer.
him and that super fat guy
I forget his first name.

Lack of core development
Thats all that is…
Some HS have it and look great and some dont
Fortunately for this guy, its clear to see that with some better core training he could make a great impact knocking down some o’ those pash rushing fools flyin’ around from the outside
Love it. This is awesome.
ND and Vandy offered…this kid will not be a qualifying risk at all
>>---l>
Watched This kid
play last friday night in the state playoffs. He will be great for FSU. Congrats Trey.
just out of curiosity why do you say RT
Is there a difference in what you look for in a RT vs LT? Or are you assuming we get a better T prospect than him who would start at the more important position.
by tdchrisdavis on Dec 1, 2009 10:49 PM EST up reply actions
mobility vs. mauler
that’s the traditional delienation between projecting LTs and RTs, respectively. You want your LT to be the most capable of handling a speed/weak-side rusher, whereas RT is your road-grading pick guy.
This approach appears to be less distinct under spread regimes than pro-styles. Under spread it appears that a balanced linemen is the name of the game (mobile and a mauler).
LT gets left on an island (alone) where RT might get some help/scrape from a TE
again, that’s the old pro style offensive linemen philosophy.
Bud, or anyone else since most of you prob have more inside info...
Do you all think this was a strategic commitment? As in, lets show we can still get great kids, and that in fact, some were waiting for Bobby to retire?
I hope that makes sense.
My exact thoughts

My guess
Is that we timed it to show that Bowden is gone but the program is doing fine.

Like that he is a wrestler also
says so in the scroll in the 2nd video.
Also in the 2nd video it says he has a 3.15 core GPA. No test score though, only a 1130 PSAT. So as it says in the story, academics don’t appear to be a concern.

re: my wrestler comment
Wrestlers as we all know are generally very strong, usually have a good base and have an advanced knowledge of leverage. All good traits for OL, regardless of position on the line.

Lots of schools prefer their OL to train as wrestlers. The best OL I know all were.

A Q about Deland
not very familiar with their level of competition. Hoping someone can fill me in on what classification they are in and some other teams that they’ve played so I can get a feel for the level of competition.
Thanks in advance for any info/responses.

How solid is this committment?

sounds about as solid as can be for a junior in HS
more solid than the pounceys and Ed Christian, I hope.

I hope the go pro this year and FAIL
"It boils down to one of two things: It's either the horses or the jockeys. And we think we have some pretty good horses."
Their act on Saturday was annoying.
What kills me is how bad Jeff Bowden screwed us on that one. Chris Rainey, Pouncey twins, Ahmed Black and John Brown to FSU? What a huge loss back in 2007.
SCALP 'EM SEMINOLES!
How much of that is JB's fault?
I’m from Tampa and I know the Lakeland coach is a complete dick who is very pro Gator and from what I heard he shielded them from other teams.
"It boils down to one of two things: It's either the horses or the jockeys. And we think we have some pretty good horses."
Honestly,
I didn’t fall recruit at all in 2007. I couldn’t tell you what happened. I’m sure the way that 2006 season ended sealed the deal though, especially for EE like they were.
SCALP 'EM SEMINOLES!
I remember a big controversy over another site's stories on the pounceys
there was some battle over quotes between two certain popular fan sites, and apparently UF’s site was the correct one.
by tdchrisdavis on Dec 2, 2009 12:07 AM EST up reply actions
haha
UF’s Scout site vs. FSU’s Rivals site. Guy made Dot look like a moron. Not that that’s hard to do.
I have no idea what turned the Pouncey’s off, though. Although I do remember them saying Gainesville had a really nice buffett.
I think the Pouncey's were double agents.
I mean, they even gave the FSU websites the wrong freaking first names. They held up recruitment of two scholarships for our most crucial unit for months, and then they turned on a dime and became COMPLETE antagonists to our program. They were the final blow in the desolation of our offensive line…. AND… they just happened to come from Lakeland, aka Gator High, and all of their teammates went along with them to UF.
So… does anyone think this conspiracy theory has legs? If it wasn’t engineered by Meyer, it could have been by their HS coach. What say you?
they werent the wrong names
werent they just their nicknames or something?
by tdchrisdavis on Dec 2, 2009 12:10 PM EST up reply actions
I think their "current" names are their birth names
And the names they gave FSU recruiting sites were…I have no idea. I just remember gators saying after the fact, “You guys don’t even know their real names.” But I thought the two grew up huge FSU fans, along with Black AND Brown? And they were not in the nose bleed seats. They were in section 1 or 41 right there below the big scoreboard inbetween the student section and the home sideline season ticket holders. You know, where ALL recruits sit (or at least used to, maybe they changed it this year?). And they were about 15-20 rows up.
I remember the pouncey's talking about their FSU visit
I recall going up to my room, punching my pillow a few times and pretending to be an FSU OL mauling the heck out of them.
They complained about being in the “nose bleed” section and basically went on and on about how much better UF was. This from was gatorcountry.

Trick making sure his son will be safe in the years to come.
But hey guys we need some defensive recruits right now.
Good get
Very good get for everyone who understands football. For the uninformed fan we might need someone a little bit sexier i.e. a skill player. Hopefully some of the guys who have been waiting till NSD can be swayed by our new staff.
This is a great recruit
I’m in the Orlando area and have frequently heard reports of him in the Orlando Sentinel and on TV.
His grades will not be a problem as it was mentioned in the OS once that he got good grades was a harworking student. I beleive his father coaches the football team – they play 5A or 6A competition all the time.
Thanks MVN
and yes his dad is the coach, and they play very good teams.
365 days, until I change my ways.
yeah and his dad is a very good high school coach who has turned plenty of programs around from what i’ve heard. hopefully he doesn’t get get turned off by the trickett system
not to be a negative nancy but
Aubrey Phillips shows that until they go through the practices it is no sure thing.
A guy might be aware of what Trickett will do to you and might tell himself that he can handle it, but actually doing it is a far different animal.

FSU GREATS
FSU players new and old stopped by to chat with Evan Cohen on ESPN 760 yesterday. Hear from Charlie Ward, Danny Kanell, Chris Weinke and more, including a compilation of Bowden’s best interviews.
Would there be a chance he would move out to a TE or HB spot
With putting a TE in Motion we could use a big guy like him as a blocking TE. If hes got some hep to his step maybe see him getting some passes. At the same time I know we are going after 3 or 4 TE right now and with relford and Tank in the mix at the moment I wouldnt see that but still if trickett wants him I cant say nothing because trickett is the man.
Why is the sky blue? Because, God Loves the Infantry

This kid is a pretty big deal around here anyway. Of course he is a lot bigger than most people he plays against. He is a life long Seminole fan though. It is very doubtful his commitment changes. It is good he is a wrestler also.

One of Jimbo Fisher's first trips as Florida State's de facto head coach was to Leto senior Jeremy Deering this morning.
Falcons offensive coordinator Frank Rose said Fisher visiting Deering at the school Wednesday morning for about an hour. Deering now plans to make an official visit for Florida State in mid-January.
“They’re definitely in the mix now,” Rose said. “He was good. He talked well of all the other schools recruiting Jeremy, but he said it’s better to be needed than it is to be wanted.”

That last line is nice
Sounds like the coach now likes Fisher, too, which is always a huge help.

They found out his birth certificate
was forged. He’s actually 21. He was held back several times in elementary school or some junk. Violated all sorts of obscure NCAA regulations. I think he was looking to play in the CFL.
Im new to TN...
…and i LOVE this site! Trey’s uncle does work with my company and was telling me a little about the kid. Monday Lane Kiffin flew in to check him out at practice and talked to him afterwards trying to get him to come to Tenn. Trey thanked him for showing intrest but said he commited to FSU and it was his dream to be a Seminole, then Lane asked “have you ever heard 100,000 fans singing rocky top? you need to check out tennessee!” lol……sounds like this kid is a die-hard fan, and according to his uncle, treys doctor has said he is still growing and could be 6’9+ by the time he comes to FSU
Lmao, "Rocky Top"
I would be scared sh*tless if I heard 100,000 people singing that. Can you imagine 100K of these guys?
