Interview with 2010 linebacker prospect Shaydon Akuna

[Interview by reader James, aka "NIU"]

A few months ago, most Florida State fans had no idea who Shaydon Akuna was. They weren't alone, however, as Akuna flew under the radar of most college football fans. However, since a strong performance in the All-Poly Football Camp, the talented young linebacker has not gone unnoticed by college coaches across the country, and has seen his recruitment kick into high gear throughout his senior season. ESPN's scouts were impressed with his his range and overall athleticism that we saw on film, along with his large frame and his good fluidity and burst to the football. Included in his list of offers is one from Florida State, one of his favorite schools growing up. Last week, I was able to speak with Shaydon about his recruitment.

"Recruiting has been crazy. Everyday, I have different coaches calling me and sending me letters. It has been really intense, but it has been a cool experience." The Akuna household has seen more than its fair share of calls from college coaches across the nation, trying to sell the islands native on their program.

Akuna really began to see his recruitment pick up after his performance at the All-Poly Football Camp during the summer. For Akuna, it was his first football camp. "The APC was a great experience. It was my first camp, and we had the opportunity to interact and be coached by coaches from Div 1 programs all across the West. I learned a lot about the work that it takes to play on the college level both on and off the field." Akuna took home MVP honors for his position.

Akuna starred at linebacker for Kapolei HS, whose season just concluded three weeks ago. "We went 5-3 and lost in the first round of the playoffs", said Akuna. "I missed the first four games of the season with a hamstring injury, but came back afterwards and played well the remainder of the season."

What does Shaydon consider to be his strengths? "I read and react very well. I play the game smart, run hard, and I love to play physical. I believe in being more physical than my opponent, because when you do, you instill fear in your opponent and break him down mentally and physically."

What aspects of his game does he feel he needs to improve? "Everything. I want to work and improve all aspects of my game. There is always room for improvement."

Akuna admitted to losing focus in the classroom as a freshman in high school, but has since refocused and is on pace to graduate. "I slacked off during my freshman and part of my sophomore year. I really didn't take my education seriously. Since then, I have started putting more work into school and should be getting a 4.0 this semester. I will have no problem graduating on time."

Akuna currently claims no favorites in his recruitment. "I am open to everyone right now. If any teams come and offer, I will listen to what they have to say. Right now, I would say the schools I am really looking at are Oregon State, Florida State, Arkansas, Oregon, and USC".

"I am just looking for a place where I can fit in", said Akuna. "I want to be around good people who I get along with, and I want to feel at home. I also want to have a good relationship with the coaching staff. When I sign with a team, I want to have a staff that can develop me and make me a beast on the field."

Additionally, Akuna also wants to go into medicine and would like to be a pediatrician.

Earlier this season, Akuna took an official visit to Oregon State and had a great experience. "It was a really good visit. I knew a couple of the guys on the team from back home and I really got along with all the players and the coaches. I definitely felt at home there."

Continue reading for the rest of the interview and a highlight tape!

Star-divide

Akuna has scheduled a visit to Arkansas this weekend, and will visit both FSU and USC in January. Potential schools for his 5th visit include UCLA, Oregon, and Arizona. He has not set a timetable for his decision, but will take all of his visits before doing so.

Who does Akuna hear from the most? "Oregon State and Florida State are the schools that call me the most. Oregon has also started calling a lot. I also get a lot of texts from players at West Virginia."

So what stands out to Shaydon about FSU?

"I have liked FSU since I was little. My grandma is a big Seminoles fan, and I grew up watching them and cheering for them. I love the prestige and tradition of the program, and they have a history of sending players to the league. I like that they play physical and with intensity on defense, because that is how I play."

"Coach Coley is my recruiter", said Akuna. "He is a cool guy; I talk to him a lot."

What position would Akuna play at FSU? "They're looking at lining me up at outside linebacker as well as at rover."

Does Bobby Bowden's announced retirement have any effect on him? "Yeah it does, kinda", he said. "Because I am looking to go to a program that is ready to compete for a championship and not rebuilding. With the coach gone, it seems like they will have to start over a little bit."

Florida is a long way away from Hawaii. Does the distance have any effect on his decision? "Not at all. I just want to go where I am happy, and my parents want the same. They will support whatever decision I make."

There is little doubt that whatever school Shaydon Akuna chooses will be getting a talented player. I will have another interview with Akuna in January after he returns from his official visit to Tallahassee.

Despite what Scout and Rivals says, Shaydon has NOT visited Arizona.

Oregon State is clearly in front for Shaydon right now. However, it is mostly based off his positive experience during his visit. All the other schools will have their chance to wow him when he visits their campus. There is no question that a great visit to FSU will put the Noles in a strong position to land him. It will come down to FSU and OSU, with Oregon having an outside chance if they continue to get involved.

Don't be discouraged by the comments regarding the coaching situation/rebuilding. I really think that Shaydon just doesn't have a full understanding of the positive situation that FSU is really in. Coaching changes are usually associated with teams that are hopeless and need massive changes. There is no doubt in my mind that once he visits the campus and talks with Jimbo and the other coaches, he will no longer have those concerns.

Seminole fans should be very excited about this kid. I have met Shaydon several times before, and I have watched him at the APC and in games, and I can tell you that this kid has a very impressive skill set. He has great speed, great size, physical, and has a relentless work ethic. He plays the game intelligently. Also is an outstanding young man off the field, and will have no disciplinary problems. He would be a great addition to Seminole Nation.

Seems like a good kid

Glad he got his grades in order, and his grandma being a Noles fan can’t hurt us. No one wants to disappoint their grandma!

Chop it up Seminoles!

Sounds like a good kid

Someone you’d want to have in your program.

great stuff.

Dude is a little monster. If FSU were to get his signature would he play immediately or need a year?

Not an alcoholic, just an FSU grad.

If he did I would think he would need to bulk up

He is listed as 6’3 215lbs.

It's a beautiful day in Tallahassee

by RaysnNoles on Dec 16, 2009 8:39 AM EST up reply actions

He'd definitely play right away on special teams.

We could hope he’d be contributing a little by the end of his first season, maybe in obvious passing situations or something.

I think he would be a great player and we would be lucky to have him, but Tallahassee is just so different from what he’s used to. I can’t get my hopes up yet, but would be thrilled if he did decide to come to Florida State.

by MattDNole on Dec 16, 2009 8:45 AM EST up reply actions

great kid

Football aside, he gave all the right answers, those are the type of people you want in your team. I’ll be rooting for him wether he signs with FSU or not.

I probably don't know Judo, but I have a black belt in crazy.

Yeah good kid and all but.....

and I understand he would do well in our new defensive scheme but he lives in Hawaii. Coaches are wasting their time on this one.

Why would you say that?

Manti Te’o left Hawaii to go to South Bend, Indiana

...

If the coaches never recruited kids who weren’t absolute locks we would never field a football team. Akuna is worth the frequent flier miles.

Besides, after all the work he’s done Coley deserves a few trips to Hawaii.

by MattDNole on Dec 16, 2009 8:43 AM EST up reply actions

Coley is just a recruiting monster. When is he gonna sign our first recruit from Moscow?

“Because I am looking to go to a program that is ready to compete for a championship and not rebuilding. With the coach gone, it seems like they will have to start over a little bit.”

He wants to play for championships right away. This tells me we do not have much of a chance with him. I could be wrong though.

by Noles93 on Dec 16, 2009 9:18 AM EST reply actions

What makes you say that?

Once he speaks with Jimbo and Coley, he will realize that we will be just as close to an ACC title as Oregon State is to a Pac10 title.

by MattDNole on Dec 16, 2009 9:21 AM EST up reply actions

And he learns about the other D stars who have committed. He'd be part of a monster defensive class.
Don’t be discouraged by the comments regarding the coaching situation/rebuilding. I really think that Shaydon just doesn’t have a full understanding of the positive situation that FSU is really in.

Did you tell him to look up Tomahawk Nation? I think he’d have a better understanding of what’s going on if he followed us.

by NoleLaw on Dec 16, 2009 9:29 AM EST up reply actions

I need to modify this.

We WILL be CLOSER to an ACC title than Oregon State is to a Pac 10 title.

OSU played Oregon for the title this year, but it was the worst season at USC in 8 years. As the young USC defense grows and Barkley matures as a QB, USC will be back in the picture. Couple that with the improvement of Stanford and others, and FSU’s future is much brighter than that of OSU.

There are very legitimate reasons why Shaydon could want to stay on the west coast. Potential for a championship isn’t really one of them.

by MattDNole on Dec 16, 2009 9:42 AM EST up reply actions

Championship

Oregon State, in all actuallity, is no closer to competing for a National Championship than we are. His goal of a NC is a lot more attainable at FSU than it is there. Now, if he was favoring USC, then I would agree.

Island guys are tough though. Troy Polomalu, Junior Seau. We’re pretty far along in the recruiting season, and I don’t see us finding a new kid from S Ga or Fl if we haven’t already. Hard to just discard kids who have this kind of potential.

I love this quote from Akuna...
I believe in being more physical than my opponent, because when you do, you instill fear in your opponent and break him down mentally and physically."

THATS THE KINDA PLAYER I WANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by TCHOP561 on Dec 16, 2009 9:56 AM EST reply actions

First thing I notice is that Hawaii is no Dade County for HS football.

It’s hard to gauge how he will fare when everyone around him has size and 4.5 speed. He does, however, play physically which is a plus. Look at the hit at 3:33 in the highlight reel. He handles the would-be blocker and then (helps) make the tackle.

In the interview it said he was being recruited to play outside linebacker and rover. Potentially the rover position is toast since Mickey is gone, right?

by NOLEinTX on Dec 16, 2009 9:59 AM EST reply actions

Not sure about Stoops

but a lot of teams incorporate the rover type safety when countering the spread

It is a good thing he wasn't a senior last year, or he would have never fit into our defensive scheme.

I think he will do okay

Would love to see him in G and G, and his cultural perspective could really be something cool to add to our new atmosphere.

I can’t see him NOT loving FSU, but if he is going to hate it January is the time to come.

Best wishes to this kid—seems like a sly guy with the right things to say.

BTW--Just watched his highlight video

I like his lasso tackles…lol

He needs to go watch some film on Nigel B and J-Luc and them come back and tell us if he thinks he will fit in ;)

by Trus1te on Dec 16, 2009 10:36 AM EST up reply actions

I grew up on Miami Beach

and was a huge Hurricane fan in the early to mid 80’s. Got to FSU and learned to hate the Canes and still do. One thing I do respect is the way the former players get in the ear of the current players and remind them of the tradition that is Hurricane football. I would love to hear our former players setting the new guys straight. As long as it is not a recruiting violation, Myron Rolle should be meeting this kid in Tally to talk up the pre med program and the football program. There is so much positive buzz about where we are heading. Can’t wait till next season starts.

by Nolegrad89 on Dec 16, 2009 11:32 AM EST reply actions

No way

He’s showing anyone around!

by Scalpemall on Dec 16, 2009 11:57 AM EST up reply actions

I think a phone call from Myron would work.

Myron is a CFB celebrity due to the Rhodes Scholar thing. It’d be better than talking to Chuck Norris! He could also talk about working with T-Buck and preparing for the NFL combine.

by NoleLaw on Dec 16, 2009 12:14 PM EST up reply actions

Why isn't Myron recruiting for us in England?

At a minimum, he should be able to persuade a soccer player to come to FSU as our future kicker/punter.

by basaltrock on Dec 16, 2009 12:17 PM EST up reply actions

We have a better chance than you think.

The softball team just signed their first player from Hawaii, and have been told these two kids talk alot.

But you saw the youtube video of the "opening" of their locker room at Dolphins' Stadium, right?

I’ll see if I can find it. I think it was taken by their SID. After several minutes of searching, no luck.

by tricknole on Dec 16, 2009 4:26 PM EST up reply actions

Far from decadent. It was pathetic.

The whole thing was painted this light pastel green. It looked as if it was some 15 year old storage room that the Dolphins had to clear out to make space for the Canes. I thought it was a spoof, but at the beginning or end I think they said they were doing it for the Miami Athletic Department.

by tricknole on Dec 17, 2009 1:14 PM EST up reply actions

Would play this year

AT ROVER..Exactly the type of player & build for the rover position

by MDFSUFAN on Dec 16, 2009 12:19 PM EST reply actions

I think he's refferencing the quality of player. a guy like Spikes isn't going to waith to play anywhere.

Or Bradham or Luc or Joyner or Reid. These guys want to play now and so anything more than redshirt frosh’s who are highly talented are going to be rare.

Yeah, right!

by truecolors on Dec 16, 2009 3:35 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think RnN was talking about Bradham or Luc or Joyner or Reid.

Akuna isn’t any of them. One of my concerns about redshirting is that the possibility of getting guys like Myron Rolle or Ponder who graduate in 2.5 yrs. If we redshirt them, then we get what 2 seasons out of ’em?

by NoleLaw on Dec 16, 2009 3:39 PM EST up reply actions

What true or RS freshman do you see having a meaningful impact?

by RaysnNoles on Dec 16, 2009 3:59 PM EST up reply actions

I didn't think Pryor was going to have as much meaningful time this year.

I’m just confident in the Jimbo. Maybe we he surprises us again this year.

by onebarrelrum on Dec 16, 2009 9:00 PM EST up reply actions

True sophs would also qualify to prove the point....since they didn't even get to redshirt. hears the list.

True Sophs.
Lonnie Pryor
Chris Thompson
Willies Haulsted
Rodney Smith
Demonte McCallister
Jaccobi McDaniel
Brandon Jenkins
Juan Harley
Gregg Reid
Dustin Hopkins

Redshirt Frosh.
Xavier Rhodes
Gerald Demps
(I will exclude OL because we recruit a different bread there and they would obviously be the exeption to this conversation)

Guys beneath the caliber we want again at FSU (“guys I don’t want at FSU”)
Justin Bright
Dan HIcks
Will Seacord

FYI that’s almost everyone!

Yeah, right!

by truecolors on Dec 17, 2009 11:07 AM EST up reply actions

no they both played at BYU, Wake, and UF late in games.

and you mean Demonte gets a medical….

the point of the conversation is no one of the caliber we want will sit and wait to play until they are Redshirt Sophmores at quality teams in the new landscape of CFB. Therefore anyone who plays a meaninful roll as a redshirt frosh. or EARLIER. would prove the point…. not JUST redshirt frosh’s. A

all the above names WILL play a meaninful roll or have already. except for the names at the bottom, and we really hope to have better talent than that in the future (even at the bottom of the roster).

Yeah, right!

by truecolors on Dec 17, 2009 11:19 AM EST up reply actions

they played on ko coverage all season.

The 3 guys "beneath" us...

Wasn’t Bright the defensive MVP at the Shrine Bowl?

I can’t say much for the other two. But what about Imeokparia, Gehres, Allen, Alexander, Little, Commack, Wade and Jackson?

by tricknole on Dec 17, 2009 1:20 PM EST up reply actions

Brightis too small to play saftey at FSU. Allen, and Imeokparia, have stayed hurt.

Gehres was a bridge building scholly to get into school – will never play.

And obviously if little commack and Wade are being passed in favor of true frosh’s then that indicates they’re talent level.

Yeah, right!

i dont booker was. he had that game vs nd as true freshman.

by fsw83 on Dec 16, 2009 6:10 PM EST up reply actions

You are correct, Booker took a RS in 2002

I remember that there was a possibility that Booker was going to have to burn his RS late after all the injuries that year at RB with Jones and Maddox. Leon ended up having to carry the load pretty much solo vs UF, can’t say that I minded after as he had a huge game.

Those days would kinda throw a wrench into the "one player away" theory wouldn't they?

If you only had one player AND a couple of years to develop him AND if you could put him on this losing team…
Not like a freshman playmaker is going to make a whole bunch of difference—or should anyway.

by NoleLaw on Dec 16, 2009 3:57 PM EST up reply actions

Does another wrench need to be thrown into that theory?

by evenflow58 on Dec 16, 2009 4:42 PM EST up reply actions

Shaydon would likely play on ST as a freshman

He will require some coaching and development before he will be ready to see significant PT on defense.

He is a hard worker and a fast leaner, and I think he could be ready to seriously contribute by his second season.

I have been working near Dorman where they have been having the Shrine bowl practices.

Let me tell you, Corey Miller will be a beast. From what I have seen nobody there can block him. Keenan Allen looks like a beast too, they have lined him up everywhere on offense.
