Shoulder injury keeps Ponder out of the NFL --- for now
Ponder was asked Monday how seriously he was thinking about entering the draft.
"It really depended on what I heard after the season," he said. "I definitely would have weighed my options."
What would he have needed to hear to go pro?
"Probably first round," Ponder said
-also-
He finished the year third in the country in total offense.

Good article. I'm not saying that I'm glad he got hurt.
But I’m sure glad to see CP7 one more year as a Nole. Especially, Jimbo’s first year as HC.
I really feel like if we can stay healthy were a top 5 team.
He wasn't going 1st round anyways, imo.
Even though I think he’s a very solid QB. For FSU’s sake, we’re lucky to have him back for next season.
Top 5 in the ACC I will completely agree with you on
and I would love some of that G&G cool-aid but like Fisher has stated many times its a process and we are just beginning that process. I do believe we will contend for the ACC because our division will be weak next year, our offense has already started the process and is way ahead so we can count on them pulling their weight but there is still a lot to be answered on the Defensive side of the ball. New coaches, new schemes but for now same personnel that will have will have to unlearn all the bad coaching of past few years and adjust to the new schemes. Also it is never easy to count on incoming freshman to step up specially at our most glaring weakness which is DL. It takes time for these kids to get size and become effective. Top 25 with a decent defense and if Stoops and the boys are miracle workers and we stay healthy maybe even top 15 with a ACCCG win and BCS bowl. In 3 years I will agree top 5 should be very attainable.
Whew
Wiping my brow – That was a close call. I agree with tricknole, though, not a first rounder. Not quite enough publicity and played for a 6-6 team. I’d take CP over Colt McCoy or Tebow, for sure, but thank goodness, I don’t have to!
CP7 has something most college QBs that put up numbers don't
He plays in more of a pro-style offense there for he can be better evaluated as a pro prospect. He also is a very smart kid both on and off the field, and he handles his pre-snap duties at the LOS very well. Most college QB’s are not given the amount of freedom that Jimbo gives CP7 to read defenses and make checks at the LOS. With one more year in Jimbo’s offense if he stays healthy and plays like he did this year he could very well end up being a 1st round pick.
His problem is that we do way too many bubble screens and he rarely displays any arm strength by slinging it downfield.
NFL scouts notice this.
Um, where you watching games this year?
We got away from the bubble screen quite a bit. Ponder made a number of “NFL” type throws in every game. He has plenty of arm strength.
Not sure what the route is called, but it goes something like this. At the snap, the receiver turns and looks to the QB. The QB takes one step and flings it out to the flats. If you want to argue over the name of the play, so be it. I don’t care. But that play seems like 1/3 of our passes. And it shows just as much (or lack of) arm strength as the bubble screen.
If you watch NFL on sundays you will see this same thing
What happens is there is a run play called and if the QB comes up to the line and reads a 1 v 1 outside with his WR he and the WR know to instead of handing off just run a quick pass because its a better match up than running against 8 or 9 defenders in the box. Ponder showed all year that he can make all the tough throws (except in the Clemson game where he was playing with fractured ribs and couldn’t get any zip on his passes). In the end I think his knowledge of the game and his ability and intelligence to read defenses and adjust plays at the LOS will give him a good chance of being a first rounder next year
Maybe I didn't make it clear.
We rarely throw the ball deep. The vast majority of Ponder’s passes are short, high percentage passes. That isn’t what the NFL is looking for. While you want an accurate passer with the ability to make consistent throws, you need somebody who can stretch the field also. We do not showcase this. And I’m saying it’s something that we should incorporate a little more into our playbook. It would open up our offense just a little and would also give scouts a better feel on Ponder’s arm strength, potentially benefiting both he and FSU.
I hope we go deep a little more next season...
…but Ponder has shown he can make those throws. Besides, as long as he looks good on those throws at the combine and at his pro day, he’ll be fine. There’s so much stock put in those two events that it’s beginning to seem as if what a player has done on the field is secondary.

I dunno if it's as much Ponder is it is a lack of deep threat at WR.
Look at our Corp…Fortson is the closest thing to a deep threat we have, but he’s a bit inconsistent, and not as fast due to his size.
Goodman, Owens, Easterling are clearly possession recievers.
Bert may be the closest thing we have, but we haven’t seen it yet.

Pro style offense is going to make FSU very attractive for HS players who want to be prepared well for the NFL….
Heady QB ...not a cannon...but good ability...think...Bob Griese
He will have his day in the NFL. Bet on it.
