Around SBN: Jeremy Lin Continues Rampage, New York Wins On Road

2011 Port St. Lucie DB's Lamarcus Brutus and Keelin Smith (Treasure Coast H.S.) commit to FSU!

Following the announcement of Bobby Bowden's departure, recruiting has picked up in a big way for FSU... in the 2011 class.  On the heels of the commitment by OL Trey Pettis, James Coley has struck gold in Treasure Coast H.S. with the commitments of two highly-regarded defensive backs, Lamarcus Brutus and Keelin Smith.  Both are also teammates of 2010 standout LB Jeff Luc.

Lamarcus Brutus is listed by Rivals.com as 6'1", 185 lbs with a posted 4.6 40 yard dash as sophomore but is still growing into his body and developing his running skill.  He is listed as a safety prospect and holds offers from the likes of Ohio State, LSU, Mississippi, UCLA, and North Carolina.  Keelin Smith is listed by Rivals.com as 6'3", 185 lbs, and as a corner prospect.  He holds offers from the same schools as Brutus.  For those of you keeping score at home, that is an impressive offer list at this stage for two junior prospects!

Both players are highly-regarded, also fielding interest from Nick Saban, Pete Carroll, and Urban Meyer.  Brutus will likely be a 4 star prospect while Smith should be as well, but has a very high ceiling with his potential, frame, and skill set.  Both look to be standout players.  Keep in mind that there is over a year left for evaluations of these two prospects, so any early predictions (including my own) should be taken with a grain of salt in fairness to these kids.

These two commitments are a testament to the work ethic of James Coley.  With the uncertainty and rumors about Bowden behind FSU, the staff can continue to pound pavement with a vengeance.  It certainly looks as though Fisher and Co. have the attention of many prospects and things are really starting to heat up with the 2011 class.

Great stuff

can’t wait for the 2010 kids to start rolling in too. I’ve even read that Noel might come back. Crazy.

Not an alcoholic, just an FSU grad.

WOW!!

Coach Coley is a recruiting machine.

What will it be like when the whole staff is pulling in the same direction recruiting -wise and on game day?!?!!

by Diablo_2 on Dec 3, 2009 10:07 AM EST reply actions

Let's make some assumptions...

At least one of these kids can play corner here…. Tyler Hunter’s back is healthy… Karlos Williams plays safety instead of wide receiver….

We would have signed an entire secondary over 6’0’’ tall comprised of high 4 to low 5 star recruits.

Hunter, Lowndes safety?

Back? What happened? I’m out of the loop.

by tricknole on Dec 3, 2009 3:27 PM EST up reply actions

The first mention on TN was of spinal stenosis

Spinal stenosis is just the narrowing of the spinal canal (closing up around spinal cord) that causes discomfort and numbing sensations. I have no knowledge of his situation, but at his age it’s likely caused by some form of bulging disk.

Check out TC’s article about Vince Williams’ injury. I’m guessing Vince’s was far more serious from all the mentions that Tyler Hunter will be fine to play.

Hunter's health

Doctors say he should be fine if he doesn’t have contact for 3-6 months. Great news for the kid.

The next Eric Berry, c’mon down to Tallahassee……

Tallahassee Community College

Word is he was bored out in MS and didn’t get along with the coach. The coach said Willie needs to get his head on straight and do what’s best for Willie, not others.

I don’t see how coming back to Tally, the city where all his crap started, is going to solve anything. I’m not expecting him at FSU, ever.

by tricknole on Dec 3, 2009 1:09 PM EST up reply actions

take it easy

Do you know him personally?

He hasn’t been arrested has he? For all we know he has a terrible family situation and a poor support system around him. At least he’s still going to CC and hasn’t given up.

We don't know if he's still going to a CC

That’s what he was supposedly going to go. He dropped out in the middle of the semester so I’m not sure he could even take partial semester classes at TCC. We shall see if he is even enrolled in spring classes in about a month.

And if you have a poor support group in Tallahassee, why come back to Tally? Why not stay out in MS where there are others seeking the same guidance you need, and people willing to offer it to you?

Yeah, FSU is still very much in this

The longer he waits, the better shot FSU has. I’m getting a little more confident on Luc every day actually, but UF (with Charlie Strong- without him, they’re done) and Tennessee are still big players.

by GonzoNole on Dec 3, 2009 2:15 PM EST up reply actions

Who, Jevon Kearse?

Seriously, so many people say, “I ran a 4.6 in high school” or “I played against a DL that ran a 4.6 in high school” and it’s all BULLSHEET. A 4.6 is HELLA fast. It is certainly not elite speed, but it is not as common as anecdotal evidence would suggest.

And it’s a corner. Corners need HIPS more than straight line speed. What’s the kid’s shuttle? They also need recovery speed (ie, a quick first couple steps). The 40 is a joke metric. It rarely is needed in any football game.

by tricknole on Dec 3, 2009 1:14 PM EST up reply actions

40 times get exaggerated like wildfire

The 40 is more of a baseline. You have to have a certain amount of straight line speed to compete, but the small differences dont show on the field that much. Guys also play different than they run in track shoes.

365 days, until I change my ways.

by SWFLNole. on Dec 3, 2009 2:13 PM EST up reply actions

Easy Example.....

Look at the UF game. Patrick Robinson is easily faster then Joe Haden, but who would you rather have on your staff? Joe Haden always makes the solid tackle and recorded a few pass break ups with a pick. Patrick got beat deep by a white kid, and numerous times got beat by Aaron Hernadez on in’s and outs. I will say however that PRob did get to flash his speed when he ran down Demps from the OTHER SIDE of the field lol.

"Reporter: What will you tell the team at halftime Bobby?
Bobby: I'll tell 'em what I always tell 'em when were winning. Boys if they don't score we'll win this game"

by fsugrizz on Dec 3, 2009 4:44 PM EST up reply actions

P Rob did look much faster than Demps there. And I never consider it “getting beat” when you are all over the receiver but the ball is put in the perfect spot. Getting beat is J Rob and Mangum on 98% of plays.

I do agree that P Rob missed way too many open field tackles, though.

But, I have no idea what this has to do with my comment saying the 40 is overrated and that I’m tired of hearing some 40 year old guy say he (or someone he knew) in high school could run a 4.5, so that a recruit running a 4.6 is SLOW.

by tricknole on Dec 3, 2009 7:28 PM EST up reply actions

My 13 yr old nephew is 5'10" & runs a 4.8 40

I would expect him to get faster just like I’d expect these HS jr.’s to get faster. From having been on my HS track team, I can tell you guys get faster between the time they are 15 and 19. These guys are still at least 2 yrs away from suiting up for an FSU game. It may well be more than 2 years before they see playing time at FSU. They will add muscle and get faster.

by NoleLaw on Dec 4, 2009 7:14 PM EST up reply actions

He's a Junior in high school.

These kids get much faster naturally as they grow. Add in a college training regimen and nutrition, that time can see drastic reduction. Deion came to FSU running a 4.4. He left running a 4.2.

by HROB3 on Dec 3, 2009 10:31 AM EST reply actions

Yea

As a college baseball players(60 yards is the baseball version of football’s forty time)…I was running a 6.8 in HS…after getting to college and hitting the weights/plyometric program…I got that time down to a 6.5 seconds in right at two years…

Great News but...

im afraid to place too much stock into next years commits as of now. There’s a lot of football/time between now and then. The next season will be critical for JF and for the stability of future classes. If we don’t play well (which i dont anticipate), then expect many to decommit.

no way we loose at BC with a descent D.
