Spoke with a very influential booster today. He said he has not been approached to donate more money in order to hire a defensive coordinator, but that those doing the hiring know that money will be no object in getting the best possible defensive coordinator to Florida State. He assured me that if FSU did miss out on its DC choice, it would not be as a result of a lost bidding war.

Also, a reader of Tomahawk Nation informs us that Florida State set a record for new booster sign-ups the day after Bowden retired.

Well

Seeing that they dont have to pay Jimbo 5 million to walk, and BB 2.5 million to stay…let the money flow baby.

I don't poach premium content

But I very seriously doubt their list is better than our search. Perhaps it is. But remember they were the people who said the Bowden thing wasn’t done yet 24 hours after we reported it was definitely over.

The more names you throw out, the more likely you are to be correct.

Foster would have VT fans jumping off of buildings...

if you read their comments (not just recently, but over time) they really believe he should just stick around and wait, and he should have no motivation to go anywhere else.

If that happened, I think my whole family would become FSU fans...finally.

I'm just curious why his name didn't come up for UVA?

Instead, a bunch of other coaches that I’ve never really heard of are thought to be the frontrunners?

by jasonole59 on Dec 3, 2009 1:44 PM EST up reply actions

Years ago but still applicable

I interviewed at UVa. Terry Holland told me, "Bud, you did a great job with your interview, but it would be hard for us to hire a Hokie." And I told him, "Coach, I’m a Hokie by association. I don’t have a degree from Virginia Tech." But they hired Al Groh, who’s one of their own, which is understandable.

It's a beautiful day in Tallahassee

by RaysnNoles on Dec 3, 2009 1:51 PM EST up reply actions

Al Groh wasn't a bad hire

Passing Bud Foster up because of his associations was stupid, though. Guess we should’ve told Mickey to f off years ago.

by tricknole on Dec 3, 2009 3:37 PM EST up reply actions

The thing is

that even if Bud does become a HC and does well, its hard to still say that UVA made a big mistake.

Smart vs Foster

I personally would like to see what Smart can do, but from an objective POV, Foster has the resume. Smart doesn’t. Everything that revolves around Smart is presumptions. “If he wasn’t a good coach, why would Saban keep him”, “Saban values him”, “He’s a great recruiter”.

Lets face it. Frank Beamer is good, but he’s not Nick Saban. Is Smart a great recruiter? Or is he a great recruiter because Nick Saban is his head coach and recruits know that? Is his defense great, or is Nick Saban’s defense great? WHY is Saban keeping him around? Is it because he’s a great coach, or because he’ll be a good scapegoat should something go wrong?

Uncertainty…

by DamonH on Dec 3, 2009 12:58 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t see a problem with either of them, but if Smart is only going to be around a few years anyway, I’d rather have Foster now. His style is just great and his defenses have been awesome. Throw Florida grown talent into that mix and you’d have something amazing.

by garnetandgold on Dec 3, 2009 1:02 PM EST up reply actions

That's precisely my point

What’s the difference between Foster & Smart? They’re both looking for a stepping stone to a HC position and will probably be gone in a couple years. I don’t see that as a distinction b/t the two as used by garnetandgold

by FSUjab on Dec 3, 2009 8:08 PM EST up reply actions

I don't subscribe

But I get their emails. And the email about Fisher’s DC search shows pictures of 4 guys…let’s just say one of the guys (not sure who it is) is so old, that Bobby Bowden would refer to him as “a young whippersnapper”.

I’m thinking this is still Bowden’s list of candidates or something…

We have to be Smart about this decision!

" Fisher’s approach to building a winner is lifted from Saban’s playbook. Right down to the terminology such as becoming more "process oriented" as opposed to "results oriented."

" Nick and I are friends," he said. "That guy is one of the best football coaches I’ve ever been around. God knows he’s brilliant. … A lot of the things he believes are a lot of things I believe. We’re very similar!

With all the hiring and firing going on

Maybe Tommy Bowden ends up back at Tulane with Rich Rod as his offensive coordinator. Maybe they coalesce around their proper roles!

Good for FSU

The college football landscape is better when FSU is at the top of their game. It’s also better for the ACC. Then college football fans aren’t stuck with Georgia Tech/Virginia Tech ruining BCS bowl games.

GT and VT don't ruin BCS games.

Those programs are top level programs, just not elite programs. You can include Clemson in there as well. Miami and Florida State are the elites in the ACC.

The school that ruins BCS games would be Wake Forest, but what can you do? They deserved to play in the game.

by tricknole on Dec 3, 2009 1:04 PM EST up reply actions

Some of our BCS games were against other elite programs...

remember we used to face miami in the Orange Bowl when they were in the Big East.

I understand the point…The chances of a Wake Forest vs Cincy orange bowl are frightening.

by jasonole59 on Dec 3, 2009 1:09 PM EST up reply actions

I don't care who we're playing, theACC is an awful 2-9 in BCS bowls

The Mid-Western Athletic Conference has as many wins is the ACC does, both by Utah, up until VaTech’s win last year, the last win the ACC had was the 99 title game vs. VaTech.

One thing to note though is that Miami and VaTech’s BCS wins/losses while in the Big East don’t count against that record, but in any rate the ACC has been terrible in the BCS and has not gotten an at-large bid yet in 11 years.

I don’t think there was any confusion about what the intention was or the actual year, it just amused me.

I really can’t wait to find out for sure who our defensive staff is going to be. Every year I sit around in the off-season waiting for CFB to come back on, but this was the first year I sat around all season waiting for the off-season to get here so we could finally see some major changes. Love Foster or Smart, but now more then ever I am confident that even if it’s a surprise name that no one is really talking about it will still be a great hire. Seems like every rumor from every source leads to amazingly capable coaches and I think we are about to make some big headlines before the end of the year. With the coaches in place the recruits will come. GO NOLES!!!!!!

by FiestaNole on Dec 3, 2009 2:50 PM EST up reply actions

With all due respects to all 4 of these individuals, Bud Foster is Frank Beamer's version of what Mickey Andrews is to Bobby Bowden.

Here is why I am somewhat doubting the rumors that Foster is having issues with Beamer as the reason he is allegedly looking.

Foster has been with Beamer in some capacity since 1981, and his DC since 1995. They have been together for 29 seasons, so they must get along pretty good. Hopefully there is a issue and that is why he might be looking. If there are no issues, then isn’t FSU just a lateral move, albeit to a more prestigious program, or at least it used to be. Why not ride it out and wait for a HC offer or for Beamer to retire.

Regardless of if there is a rift in their relationship, and for our sake hopefully there is, he interviewed for a HC jobs at WVU in 2007 and for Tommy Bowden’s job at Clemson in 2008. So he is definitely looking for a HC position as his next career advancement, just as Smart is.

If we hire either of these two, they could be gone at the end of the first season either if they turn our D around and become more valuable, or even just if a HC position turns up they are interested in.

So hopefully Jimbo will ask the new DC to groom his future replacement because either one will probably only be a stop gap coach, but I think most of us are willing to take that chance.

by RaysnNoles on Dec 3, 2009 3:20 PM EST up reply actions

I have only been able to find VT defense stats compared to the ACC, not nationally. And in the ACC they are tops or close to it, so that would be an improvement, but I’m more concerned about the national level. We were a stop or 2 in a couple of ACC games from winning, and if any DC can’t fix that, they shouldn’t be in the game. I want to know when we play FU or the like, we have a chance to win regardless of what our offense does. I want to know that if we’re only able to score 10, then the defense will only allow 9 a la the 90’s. If we can get back there we will be dangerous, especially with the potential offenses we have. Damn Mickey and his defenses spoiled me.

by BAMFnole on Dec 3, 2009 3:51 PM EST up reply actions

True

It was more that I want a season where both the defense AND the offense show up to the same game, consistently. Seems like we haven’t had that for a while. 2000 to be exact.

UGA fans have Smart as their top candidate

Buck Belou went on the radio here in Atlanta today saying that Smart should be far and away UGA’s top choice. Didn’t mention FSU once. I kind of want to email him and tell him that his boy more likely to end up at FSU, although I’m sure Smart will turn this into a 3 way bidding war.

by Dent Street Nole on Dec 3, 2009 4:45 PM EST reply actions

Then ask that idiot why they haven’t won a NC since the Reagan administration, and why have they gone 3-17 against UFAG in the last two decades?! Georgia is okay with me personally, but it’s not greatest like they think. Richt has turned that program around yes, but he has won about all he can there and he may by starting to realize it.

We have more recent NC success (imagine that) and a better recruiting base. That’s why UGA stays in Tampa/ St. Pete and pokes their nose around in the Palm Beach County area for talent. Hell, they offered a RB out here in San Diego (He commited to Oklahoma). Hell, LSU is a better gig than UGA. LSU keeps more of it’s prime recruits in-state and the proximity to Texas helps them supplement that in-state talent as well. I once had a UGA fan try to bump his gums about Florida State. I had to shut him up very quickly. SEC fans are a trip any damn way!

by Diablo_2 on Dec 3, 2009 7:58 PM EST up reply actions

The Richt love is dwindling. UGA fans have a serious case of envy for other SEC schools. They really ride the coattails of much greater programs and expect the same amount of respect as a Florida or Alabama.

Georgia football tradition

comes down to one man, and it’s not Vince Dooley. Hersher Walker may have been the greatest freshman ever, maybe best player ever. Otherwise there isn’t much contribution from the dogs toward CFB history. FSU and rival SEC programs have been raiding Georgia talent for years. Consistently the most overrated program in my lifetime.

I do not think UGA or FSU's defensive coordinator position

Is the cat’s meow at the moment, but if either team started winning more again and could beat the Gators, then either could be a prestigious job.

I said this on that other site, what if UGA’s boosters also say momey is no object? Kirby Smart could end up a $2 million coordinator. A bidding war would be music to his agent’s ears.

by nolestuff on Dec 3, 2009 5:18 PM EST reply actions

at some point it is safe to assume that money IS an object. There should have been an * by the comment that stated “reasonable and customer salary”.

by jasonole59 on Dec 3, 2009 5:20 PM EST up reply actions

I agree

I’m not saying FSU is a way better or more prestigious job than UGA, or vice versa. I’m just saying UGA fans think UGA is the cream of the crop and anyone who doesn’t want to coach there is mentally handicapped. I actually don’t mind UGA (both loathe the Gators) but they are not “all that and a bag of chips” right now like their fans think.
I certainly hope we don’t blow $2 million or anywhere close to it for a coordinator. I don’t even think Jimbo will be making that much, will he? I’m sure if it got too high we’d just say forget it, we’ll get someone else. We don’t need to spend a gagillion dollars to get an awesome DC. If they’re willing to spend that much on him, then they need him more than we do.

by FloridaState on Dec 3, 2009 5:24 PM EST up reply actions

Ever seen bids on Ebay

The idea is to go there and get a good deal, but sometimes people get so caught up at the end in winning the bid they go beyond what they initially intend as their maximum offer just to win. What if the schools do that? It could get up there, doubtful $2 mil, I was kidding about that.

by nolestuff on Dec 3, 2009 6:14 PM EST up reply actions

Try www.esnipe.com

You can enter your max bid, and it will place an e-bay bid for you 1-2 secs. before the auction closes at the lowest increment price poss. and it won’t go over your max bid. I wouldn’t bid on anything on e-bay without it. It prevents early bidding wars and keeps the cost down. A good way to steal a sale from someone who thinks they have it locked up.

by NoleLaw on Dec 3, 2009 6:26 PM EST up reply actions

I do that myself

If it is something I really want on ebay I nail it the last fifteen seconds.

by DocHoliday2 on Dec 3, 2009 8:22 PM EST up reply actions

It's great if UGA thinks their job is more prestigious than FSU's

To illustrate my point, consider whether Kirby Smart’s choice was between DC at Duke and DC at FU. FU wouldn’t be willing to pay $800k for a DC (while Duke might) and would cut the bidding war off at a much lower amount simply because many people should want the DC job at a much more prestigious school.

Georgia hasn’t had the type of success as FSU had during its Golden years. I don’t think it’s a more prestigious job. UGA is far less likely to win a conference championship having to go through Saban AND Meyer. Odds of success are LOW. On the other hand, FSU’s new DC’s odds of success are much higher. Much more likely to make rapid and substantial improvement to FSU’s defense. Odds of a conference championship and national coverage are higher at FSU too. FSU should be a more attractive job for top DC candidates and shouldn’t have to pay as much as UGA, even though I bet we’re willing to.

Let’s hope UGA thinks they are as prestigious as the top schools and that they cut the bidding off low.

Florida State: We are hearing that Kansas co-defensive coordinator Bill Miller has talked with Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher about the defensive coordinator job. Miller served as the secondary coach at Florida when the Gators held LSU’s offense scoreless in 2003 (when LSU won the national championship). Jimbo served as the offensive coordinator at that time under head coach Nick Saban

i hope this isnt true.i mean even talking to him, hes a co dc on a bad defense.

Florida State:
Sources tell us that Kansas Co-Defensive Coordinator Bill Miller will NOT be the next Defensive Coordinator for the Seminoles, according to our sources.

Florida State:
Sources tell us that Jimbo Fisher has offered the Defensive Coordinator job to Kirby Smart (Alabama Defensive Coordinator). Fisher worked with Fisher at
LSU and former FSU Graduate Assistant (2002-2003). If Smart turns the job down, Head Coach Fisher is going to turn to Bud Foster (Virginia Tech
Defensive Coordinator) or Sal Sunseri (Alabama Linebacker Coach). Also, look for Manny Diaz, MTSU Defensive Coordinator, and Dameyune Craig,
Former Auburn QB/Fomer LSU Graduate Assistant/Current South Alabama Wide Receiver Coach, to join the staff very soon.
