Beginning in 2010 the SEC is moving exclusively to ESPN since the Big 10 now has their own network. Another major shift in college football television rights comes as a result of the NBC Universal/Comcast merger that could see Notre Dame losing their deal with NBC. There is no doubt that gaining the rights to basketball and football would put Fox Sports at the forefront of college sports coverage.

For the ACC, this is a huge deal that could vault the conference back into the national spotlight.

No I still dont think its good

with CBS and ESPN both pushing the SEC still, they’ll still be thrust in our faces and to the forefront of every discussion. ESPN still rules the world of sports, no matter what fox does.

And Fox’s college football coverage is absolutely horrendous…..actually worse than horrendous. It’ll get us on TV, and get us money, but god I dont know if i can stand Fox college football coverage.

so was ABC..

plus we had ABC for network TV, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN360 for everything else.. I live 2000 miles away from Tally and still could watch ALL of FSU games except 1 here.. I really doubt FSU will be televised on Fox National Network channel that much and unless I buy the college football package I don’t get FSN Florida and no way they’re televising FSU on FSN-RM

Ugh

Money is great, but I agree, I’d rather watch games on Raycom than the way Fox covers games. I hated watching the BCS games on there the last few years. Bad commentators, bad scoreboard, bad picture quality, terrible microphone work (zero crowd noise, the band is always mic’d so that all you hear is snare drums. I’m in Chiefs, I notice these things and they bug me, give me a break.)

Raycom is an abortion

You know they only bring 6 cameras to the game, terrible angles and terrible replay. There is a reason those guys are not on Network TV. As long as FOX leaves Brian Baldinger in the NFL I am fine with it and I am sure FOX will fine tune some things moving forward.

I have been hoping for this to happen for a LONG time.

Just like with the NFL, Fox can step up its coverage if they make a commitment and pull in broadcasting talent (just comes down to the right price). Like his politics or not, Murdoch runs a much tighter ship than his rivals. I would give this a chance before assuming it to be a failure.

An alliance of this nature was the ONLY way the ACC could avoid being squeezed out of relevance altogether. You can be darn sure ESPN/ABC will be pushing their product; we needed someone to push ours. As FSUn and others have been harping, this is big business, and a business without a marketing arm/advocate (network) was going to be left out in the cold. I hope Fox also arranges deals with other any other conferences that can be wooed (e.g., Pac 10) to further strengthen its footprint.

Funny. FSU and Miami simply have to get their acts together.

No other way the prestige of ACC football can be salvaged. They do bring some quality bball to the table, and that’s the only thing that makes this even worthwhile for Fox to try at this point.

by arrdub on Dec 7, 2009 9:22 PM EST up reply actions

this is true

when Miami and FSU fight year in and out for the ACCCG then the ACC will be back as a whole. Sorry no one is taking the ACC serious because look GT is the ACC champs. VT with good Def no Offense, BC and WF um no they are fuller teams tell FSU gets there heads out of there forth point of contact.

by Desman on Dec 7, 2009 9:32 PM EST up reply actions

When it comes down to it --

We have 2 Florida teams, the SEC only has one. That’s huge. Ideally, FSU and Miami could collectively be STRONGER than the top two teams in the SEC — Florida and Alabama, at present. As we’ve seen lately, the top of the conference is what really matters in terms of perception, so the ACC may be able to compete if these two teams pull themselves out of the gutter quickly.

Outside of the top, VT, Clemson, GT, UNC, and UVa, at least, should all be able to consistently field quality programs.

UVA? Switch them with BC

by tricknole on Dec 7, 2009 10:08 PM EST up reply actions

BC is currently a lot better,

…but for the long haul, there is no reason for that to persist. UVa has far more institutional resources and alumni, and is in a much better recruiting market. They shouldn’t be the conference doormat that they are. BC’s success is a true testament to the influence of quality coaching; they defy logical circumstances.

by arrdub on Dec 7, 2009 10:39 PM EST up reply actions

Hasn't BC been a name in football for quite awhile, though?

UVA has the resources but they don’t seem to be making much of a difference in football or basketball lately.

BC

BC was good with Flutie but fell off the map for a while. Honestly can’t remember why the ACC took them from the Big East. I remember there was some kind of story behind it but the details escape me.

UVA

has always been bad. They get an occassional player like Tiki Barber, but they never go anywhere. It’s more Duke-like. It is a very old school like Bama and UF, but its never done anything with football. I’m surprised their B-Ball team has fallen off. Their graduate schools are fully endowed and are comparable to Ivy League schools. Harvard is old & has lots of $$$, but you don’t see them challenging for the MNC every year. Admission standards? UVA is filled with brainiacs, but they also have normal folk as it is a state school. If they really wanted to develop the football program, they could create academic exceptions and put the $$$ into football. The alums would rather donate to the debate society than the athletic dept. Their alums don’t miss a quality football team because they have never had one. When I was an undergrad there, I remeber getting hopes up, maybe losing 1 game over halfway through the season, then dropping 4 out of the last five games or 3 out of the last 4. Hell, we wore khakis and blazers to the games and girls wore nice laura ashley dresses. I agree that BC or Wake would be in those second-tier ACC teams on a regular basis.

On the UPSIDE

You’re right Murdock knows how to e innovative and make money. That said, I fully expect Fox to come up with its own version of Erin Andrews and Jenn Brown, but in an ovious appeal to the lowest common denominator. And I do not expect it to be some chic that later winds up doing weight watchers or nutrisystem commercials.

Remember this is the network that has delivered In Living Color, the Simpsons, American Idol, and 24. Wouldn’t suprise me if Murdock got together with Hugh Heffner and they did a weekly segment of casting the girls of the ACC (and PAC-10 if they add them.) It’ll be interesting to see what the sideline reporters look like. Holly Rowe & Leslie Visser need not apply. College Gameday has guest analysts like Lance Armstrong and Bob Knight. Fox’s guest analysts will probably come from the Lingerie Football League. They’ll grad some hottie college student to do the gameday weather or some such nonsense.

Bottom line is that Fox will find a way to make a regular weekly show entertaining and different. Expect some foolishness at the outset to take the focus off of their crummy reporting. I’d be in favor of adding the PAC-10 to the deal for the reasons others have given. Between the ACC & PAC-10 there should be plenty of ranked teams to broadcast. If gametimes overlap, they can always provide regional coverage to maximize ratings.

and miss his great commentary on the new gimick plays people are running?

FSU just faked the ball to the running back then threw a pass. FSU is bringing out all the gimmick plays today.

With FSU leading with 35 seconds to go Christian Ponder takes the snap and then kneels down. That gimmick play didn’t work, FSU was stopped for a loss.

on the topic of gimmick plays though, im pretty sure national commentators have no idea what that word means. I was watching the giants cowboys game and kevin boss showed like he was going to block, then went for a pass. Troy Aikman called it a gimmick play.

CBS Will Be With SEC For Long Time

CBS signed a 15 year deal with the SEC in 2008. CBS gets first choice in football and a certain number of basketball and ESPN gets everything else. Deal started this past season, with ESPN starting the SEC Network (regional broadcasts like Raycom and old ESPN Plus) and putting huge SEC logos everywhere.

I've always wondered why FOX has never tried to get bigger into college football

Especially after getting the BCS rights. I mean, with every network not named the SEC slammed into the ABC regional block, you would think FOX be able to pry one of the major conferences onto their network. If nothing else, this could work out excellent for FSU. FSU easily brings in the strongest TV ratings in the ACC and we could turn the “ACC on FOX” into our own defacto national TV contract much like UF has done with the “SEC on CBS.”

Based on the quality of FOX’s BCS coverage, I think it’s safe to say they have not really cared about college football.

Even now, in their 4th season of having the BCS, the BCS selection show felt like an afterthought. I was watching ESPN’s even though they revealed the matchups later because it seems like they actually cared.

That is a good point you make about becoming for FOX what UF has become for CBS.

by 38Noles on Dec 7, 2009 10:01 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, but its a chicken and egg scenario...

Who wants to play for a team with no exposure?
Who would devote valuable coverage time to a team without play makers?
(granted this means playmakers = winning = fans)

You solve one, the other follows. Its just that first step. You start giving kids the chance to shine in a national spotlight…. they will be more likely to come play for you.

Won't be near as pitiful once FSU and Miami are back

They’ll likely show us 2 predominantly nationally anyways. So, if we’re playing on the road, those stadiums will draw. We will obviously draw well at home if we’re “back” and Miami will be Miami.

Clemson and VT draw well and they’re likely to get a few games as well. It’s not like they’ll be showing Duke/Wake on national or even regional tv.

by tricknole on Dec 7, 2009 11:19 PM EST up reply actions

You're preaching to the choir, see our discussion above.

Just saying why it makes sense for FOX to take on the ACC under current circumstances… with the hope that the league progresses as we’ve both described.

FYI, still think BC has to eventually drop off the face. If they get the wrong coach, they will have a hard time ever coming back.

by arrdub on Dec 7, 2009 11:31 PM EST reply actions

BC?

“If they get the wrong coach, they will have a hard time ever coming back”.
Well, BC hasn’t had a losing record since 1998. When things were going bad in the late 80’s (4 straight under .500 seasons), BC hired a coach named Tom Coughlin, who brought 3 seasons of very good football. The wrong coach was then hired (Dan Henning), who sunk the program from 94-96, only to pass it off to TOB, who after 2 losing seasons started a string of 11 straight winning seasons (last 3 from Jagozinski and Spaziani). So, BC has gone through the wrong coach stretch before, and 3 straight coaches later haven’t had a losing season since. 5 or more ACC wins in each of the 5 seasons in the ACC with a 26-14 overall ACC Record since joining the conference. 5-3 this year with a true frosh at QB, and a defense that was a work in progress all season. BC will be just fine.

My theory is contingent on the landscape evolving.

Don’t know if BC has the right elements to sustain their success — which has been unquestionable, as I noted elsewhere. Just think they have too much going against them. Small school, limited fan/alumni support, and not exactly “fertile” recruiting grounds. As football industry evolves, I think it will be harder and harder to overcome these obstacles. Hope you guys can keep it up, no hate here, just speculation.

Some of these small schools get more money from B-ball than football. No one cares about Dukes football team but everyone fears there b-ball team. WF is a small school and there football team is ok not the best but getting better but there B-ball team kinda good. UNC is UNC.
