Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

When thinking about the DC search, keep in mind the name Phil Parker. I identified him last December, but had forgot by the time we conducted our DC search. Parker is considered an up and comer and has been schooled under some of the finest defensive minds out there, including Nick Saban (Mich State '87 and Toldeo 1990, where Saban brought him over to be his DB coach) and Norm Parker (Saban's OLB coach & Defensive Coordinator at Michigan State and now at Iowa for 10 years). Iowa also gives their top recruiting territory to Parker, and he is 46 years old. Iowa plays great defense every year despite very mediocre talent. In addition, his head coach, Kirk Ferentz, is a Belichik/ Saban guy, so he would be used to working in a Fisher type organizational environment.

Is it safe to say...

That as of right now, we arent sure who the DC is going to be? What’s the time table on the announcement for our new DC?

by TimScribble on Dec 8, 2009 2:56 PM EST reply actions

I'm curious, too.

I’m very anxious to find out who will be leading our defense. The sooner the announcement, the better.

by FloridaState on Dec 8, 2009 3:05 PM EST up reply actions

Our names are very close.....

Please post intelligently so that I look smart too……

Nice

Earlier a “nole93” replied to a “noles93”, now a “Florida_State” replying to a “FloridaState”

by tricknole on Dec 8, 2009 10:51 PM EST up reply actions

Not a massive name

But don’t know how much it matters with the way recruiting has been going lately. If we go with a lesser name, this would be a good time to do it since UF will be dealt a blow when Strong leaves.

by osceolafan850 on Dec 8, 2009 3:33 PM EST reply actions

I don't doubt that he can coach

Just thought that by going for one of the Bama guys we were getting a guy who kids could get excited about by his association. If we hire him we have to educate the kids to what his defenses have done lately since I doubt they have watched them on TV and combat the idea that the Big 10 plays inferior ball for the most part.

by osceolafan850 on Dec 8, 2009 4:13 PM EST up reply actions

But that’s in the Big Televen. I’m only half joking when I say it but do any of those offenses do anything for you? Those statistics and trends are good to be sure and the ACC isn’t a juggernaught conference by any means but I think they need to be discounted a bit because of his opponents.

by evenflow58 on Dec 8, 2009 4:37 PM EST up reply actions

he is also doing it with lesser talent though

havent heard of many kids that want to play ball in Iowa

by BS37FSU on Dec 8, 2009 4:39 PM EST up reply actions

True. I was looking at it from more a scheme perspective. On a yards/games average PSU has the best offense followed by Wisc and NW. I don’t know if you have every watched these teams play but it is physically painful to watch those offenses.

by evenflow58 on Dec 8, 2009 4:46 PM EST up reply actions

Ah. I was thinking that was on a yards/game basis. I should have known better. I’m willing to put more worth in those stats then.

by evenflow58 on Dec 8, 2009 4:48 PM EST up reply actions

His Bio

Says he coached Bob Sanders…

He’s put guys in the league, I’m sure that resonates with most recruits.

by FLAK8 on Dec 8, 2009 7:11 PM EST up reply actions

Just resonated with me

Everybody knows who Bob Sanders is

by tricknole on Dec 8, 2009 10:55 PM EST up reply actions

agreed

Nothing against coach coley of course, he’s amazing. But we dont want to have coaches like Ron Zook. Great recruiters, but poor coaches. Thank you but ive had my fair share of poor coaching for 3 lifetimes. I have nothing against the anyone on this staff though or those being considered for DC.

by egynole on Dec 8, 2009 3:54 PM EST up reply actions

Names can be very overrated

Smart was not a huge name when Saban hired him, heck the only DC experience he had had was 1year at Valdasta St. Gus Malzon was a high school coach and look what he did at Arkansas, TCU, and is putting togeter at Auburn. Look at TCUs DC this year, he is insanly good. I could continue on and on with examples. Sometimes it’s not the name that matters. Coach Paker migh not have a big name but boy can he coach a D.

by DJ82585 on Dec 8, 2009 3:41 PM EST reply actions

Thats what we need

and I would take TCU’s DC in a heart beat

Why is the sky blue? Because, God Loves the Infantry

by Desman on Dec 8, 2009 6:04 PM EST up reply actions

Don't know much about him

but really like that TCU team. I am disappointed that TCU and Boise got matched up. I think better games would have been TCU vs the Gayturds and Cinci vs Boise. The way they matched them up I think both UF and TCH will just blow out Cinci and Boise.

by BS37FSU on Dec 8, 2009 6:08 PM EST up reply actions

Doesnt do much for me...

Can you really be considered an up and comer at 46? Might be a great coach. Just doesnt get me excited. I am just ready for this DC search ot be over. I am about ready to stick my head in the sand until the announcement is made.

by BhamSeminole on Dec 8, 2009 3:48 PM EST reply actions

Lots of names coming out of the woodwork now.

I heard Mark Stoops might also have a shot at the position. I can’t wait for this position to be filled so we can breakdown the hire. I’m sure Fisher will do the right thing though especially since his first hire, Gran, is a great hire. By the way I like Parker. He does more with less recruits than we have.

by 1newplayer on Dec 8, 2009 3:55 PM EST reply actions

It should be noted that Stoops is up for a HC job

at Youngstown State and he is from there, so I don’t know of the likelihood of him taking the DC job.

I think the problem with most of us was expecting that Smart was going to be our DC

now everyone else doesn’t sound as good. I am intrigued about this guy though. Love what Iowa has been doing recently and I really like coach Ferentz (non gay like). Never heard much bout Parker but from what the article mentioned he has ties to some great defensive minds, and Iowa’s D has been no slouch either. Would love to see a DB coach as DC too. I believe there are easier gets for DE/OLB assistants to come fix our pass rush. Going to try and find out more about this guy. This wait is definitely killing me though. Can we still expect an announcement by week’s end?

by BS37FSU on Dec 8, 2009 3:57 PM EST reply actions

Sunseri does

especially knowing that it was him and not Smart who fixed Bama’s front 7 and their pass rush. We need more help with our front 7 than with our back 4. We need help all over, but hopefully most plays (both rushing and passing) will begin and end with our front 7.

by NoleLaw on Dec 8, 2009 4:25 PM EST up reply actions

agree'd

The back 4 are the hardest positions to play on a D(IMO). The front 7 can be coached to give a good pass rush it takes alot of stress and pressue off the back 4. You can not expect the back 4 to cover people for long periods of time withno pass rush. While our back 4 STUNK overall that can be fixed with ease. A position coach or coaches that can get them back to grass root fundamentals and dicipline. It takes alot of Dicipline to play in the back 4.

by DJ82585 on Dec 8, 2009 4:30 PM EST up reply actions

I agree but I believe there is a larger pool of great DE / OLB coaches who are willing to take the job as an assistant

therefore getting a good DBs coach as DC leaves room on staff for a great assistant to install discipline in our front 7. What Iowa has been doing with the talent they have up there has been impressive to say the least. Don’t know how much can be credited to Parker but their defense has been pretty darn good. I have heard a few names of assistants that might come coach our DEs and Backers if we get a DC who’s also a DBs coach. I have not heard many names that would come in as DB coaches if our DC is a front 7 guy. I guess thats what i was trying to get at

by BS37FSU on Dec 8, 2009 4:38 PM EST up reply actions

Ahhhh fear of the uncertainty.

Have no fear of the great Oz (Fisher) as he is infinite in power and wisdom and has the ability to bestow great gifts upon you o Nole.

I trust Fisher will do the right thing

Like i have mentioned in other posts, Fisher has done nothing to loose our trust so far so if someone is good enough in his eyes they will have 100% of my support. Just wish it would happen soon

by BS37FSU on Dec 8, 2009 5:08 PM EST up reply actions

haha

I will give him time. No way I loose trust in Jimbo right away, unless somehow our Offense falls out of top 100 in the country next year with no injuries. Then I will start to question him

by BS37FSU on Dec 8, 2009 5:11 PM EST up reply actions

Foster is my #1 choice

But what do I know? Smart obviously slightly behind if not tied with him. Just really think Foster has been a proven defensive Monster for a long time and would have greater weapons at his disposal at FSU then he ever had at VT. While we are at it get their S & C coach too, they seem to get the fastest players in the nation coming out of VT every year.

by BS37FSU on Dec 8, 2009 5:06 PM EST up reply actions

Wonder of Coley's latest Tweet is a sign that we will be taking Foster
in this world we have a choice….. Spear or get Speared - FSU FSU FSU

Perhaps that is a signal that Foster should come to FSU to do some spearing or else he will be speared by the Noles’ offense.

Maybe I’m reading too much into it. The man speaks in riddles, but I am guessing it is a sign that we will be getting someone who has committed to another ACC team or an ACC coach to fill one of our spots.

Right before the Gran announcement he tweeted this:

who’s going to RUN this town? WE ARE… WE ARE this is NOLE Nation!!!!

by NoleLaw on Dec 8, 2009 5:18 PM EST up reply actions

Which?

I haven’t been following his tweets very long.

by NoleLaw on Dec 8, 2009 5:21 PM EST up reply actions

spear or get speared

I don’t follow either, but it seems that this is recurring (the few times i’ve checked it out)

by jasonole59 on Dec 8, 2009 5:27 PM EST up reply actions

Funny coincidence

that RUN is all in caps and the “town” he was in when he did the tweet was the 305, with Gran being a RB coach who specialized and was successful in recruiting the 305

wow this trully is a great time to be a Nole

Since BB retired we have had a big announcement almost daily.
Its been recruits, coaches, and now a new president has been named.
Good luck to Barron and hopefully now we can get a new AD too, and hope Barron leaves all Athletic Decisions to be made by the AD unlike TK.
Welcome home Barron

Has their been any interest shown by Fisher or FSU in Parker?

by evenflow58 on Dec 8, 2009 4:50 PM EST reply actions

Keep the faith

I have not found much to complain about with either a guy like Parker or Sunseri. Many posts have complained about both guys sticking around a program too long or their age, but remember for a lot of coaches it’s not just what they want to figures into their career decision.

If you have never dragged an unhappy wife and kids across the country a few times to chase jobs (I’ve done it twice ) give it a try. Considering how little we know about most of these guys as individuals, maybe they just liked the places they were at and were looking for some stability. At least as far as coaches go.

I completely trust Jimbo

Although it did seem the FSU guys that went up to Iowa were very impressed by what they saw over the summer. Oh, and the wrestling guy at Iowa was named Dan Gable. Check out his Wikipedia page if you don’t know who he is. He is impressive!

We need to hire a DC soon so I can have my life back.

No one seems to have any legit info on this. The latest thing I’ve read is that Mark Stoops is flying in for an interview this week. I’d love to get that guy.

by Dent Street Nole on Dec 8, 2009 5:05 PM EST reply actions

I am started to get concerned with the fact that our potential DC list just keeps growing...

I do trust Jimbo to make the right hire and I am glad he is taking time to look around for the right guy, but I am starting to get concerned the more I hear new prospects come up.
Starting to look like Jimbo’s top prospects were not interested and now he has to find others. Anyone else feel the same?

by BS37FSU on Dec 9, 2009 3:53 PM EST reply actions

Everything is speculation at this point

Truth is nobody outside of Jimbo and staff have any idea how big the list is. I wouldn’t get too caught up in internet rumors.

How big do you think his list is? Smart, Sunseri, Hudson and maybe Stoops, Parker. That is only 5 I would hope he would do his due diligence and interview a good amount of individuals.

It's a beautiful day in Tallahassee

by RaysnNoles on Dec 9, 2009 7:57 PM EST up reply actions

Sal Sunseri....

I dont mean to offend anyone with what I am about to say. However, Sal Sunseri is extremely out of shape and obese. Before you jump on me for what I am saying, consider the best coordinators in the nation on either side of the ball. All of them are physically ready for the recruiting trail and the pressures that come with coaching. There are very few successful out of shape coaches in College (Pros seem to be different for whatever reason).

Just throwing out something for consideration. Stoops, Parker and Hudson are all considerably more fit than Sunseri.

What do you think? Am I way off base?

You also have to consider

what kind of distraction would health issues of a coach be to the team? Anyway….go ahead and rip me.

"I have come that you may have life, and life to the max"

by MNeilson on Dec 10, 2009 8:48 PM EST up reply actions

Does he have known health issues?

If not there’s no reason to consider that, imo. I don’t think the health/weight aspect would play much into it. I would think having an in shape coach would be beneficial, though, because it’s kind of a lead by example type thing for the players.

by tricknole on Dec 10, 2009 11:23 PM EST up reply actions

Well UNF,

pro coaches don’t have to recruit. Image doesn’t matter.

I do think Sunseri is more fit than his profile pic shows.

by Bud Elliott on Dec 11, 2009 3:41 AM EST up reply actions

Fair Enough.

"I have come that you may have life, and life to the max"

by MNeilson on Dec 11, 2009 5:02 PM EST up reply actions

Brian Kelly's isn't exactly an Adonis, lol.

“Fat” Phil was the butt of many a joke in the SEC but he did pretty good career there. But overall I do think it can sometimes be a consideration in hiring a head coach (probably a small consideration, but still). As much as some hate to admit it physical apperance does sometimes play a part in the hiring process.
