Around SBN: Dissecting Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

This is a tremendous hire by Louisville and a major (but expected) loss for the Gators. Strong is an excellent coordinator and an other-worldly recruiter. It's thought that his decision to become a head coach at Louisville helped sway Jeff Luc to Florida State. He might also take Billy Gonzalez with him, which would further hurt UF's recruiting machine.

I'm also a Louisville fan (born and raised there)

I am now worried about dying from pure happiness!

Will tomorrow get better? Charlie Strong PC at Louisville, no exams, a new WORT?

Not related aricle t

Just read in a USA today article that Eddie Gran was banned from Pahokee high because of what Lame Kiffin said last year. Is he still banned?

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/preps/football/2009-11-09-pahokee-cover_N.htm

by marlins44 on Dec 8, 2009 7:38 PM EST reply actions

Read the article a little closer
• In May, Pahokee principal Ariel Alejo banned Tennessee assistant Eddie Gran from campus until Kiffin apologized publicly to the school. Kiffin did, and Richardson is a freshman this season with the Volunteers.

by NoleLaw on Dec 8, 2009 7:41 PM EST up reply actions

Haha, that's hilarious

That idiot knows no bounds. Gas pumpers in South Carolina. Shoeless, poverty folk in Florida.

by tricknole on Dec 8, 2009 10:36 PM EST up reply actions

He also suggested

That the admin people at Pahokee might F-up the LOI paperwork (Or even intentionally change it to UF). So Richardson’s aunt went to a middle school to fax it instead

My favorite part of the off-season

Is waiting to hear what is going to come out of Lane Kiffin’s mouth. I can’t decide whether he’s embarrasing or hella cool.

by DamonH on Dec 8, 2009 10:55 PM EST up reply actions

Lane Kiffin is an idiot

I know Al Davis looks like a vampire in a sweatsuit, but notice how Kiffin was fired with “cause” and took a college gig before his grievance was even heard (When he tried to get the $ Al owed em) by the NFL? His name is mud in NFL circles because of how much lyin he did to the media when he was in Oakland. This idiot is the only dude on earth who can make an Al Davis decision (To fire his A$$, WITH CAUSE) look intelligent .

by westcoastnolefan on Dec 8, 2009 11:04 PM EST up reply actions

Wow. How do you really feel?

I’d be embarrassed if he were my coach, but UT fans think he’s incredible.

I’d love to see him recruit. His success was borderline fishy. However, NuKeese doesn’t look like such a steal anymore. I bet CUM had a laugh over that one.

by DamonH on Dec 8, 2009 11:08 PM EST up reply actions

UT fans love him because he's put them back in the media

even if it’s for all the wrong reasons. If Lane is successful it’s because of his pops, who you must respect, and whom I like from his Buc’s glory.

Well...Nu'Keese is a steal

but for the wrong reasons.

My bad man

I’ll be up in the Bay Area during Christmas and if I ever want to get cursed out I’ll ask a Raider fan how they feel about that dude. Fishy is right, he accepted a coaching job that superior candidates turned down. The Raider gig is only reason people even know his name, and gets opportunities, yet he dumps on them every chance he gets. Thats like, if Jimbo got fired from FSU after 2-3, gets the LSU gig (Because Miles will eventually get fired, he’s getting piggybacked by Saban’s earlier work), and then yaks to the media about all FSU’s dirty laundry and years of disfunction. That wouldn’t taste too good

by westcoastnolefan on Dec 8, 2009 11:23 PM EST up reply actions

• In February, new Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin kicked off a public tiff with the school by insinuating someone at Pahokee would try to sabotage his recruitment of Nu’Keese Richardson in Florida’s favor. “Someone at the school was going to screw it up,” Kiffin said. He also ripped the town, saying, “You take that hour drive up from South Florida, there ain’t a gas station that works. Nobody’s got enough money to even have shoes or a shirt on.”

by NoleLaw on Dec 8, 2009 11:02 PM EST up reply actions

methinks he'd be banned as a UT coach

Reports are he’s not meshing with the UT staff so maybe he’ll be unbanned.

Has he interviewed already?

If he doesn’t interview, I believe you. If he does, I stay suspect. It’s an HC job. The fact that he’s 61 doesn’t support anything. Maybe he thinks this could be his only/last chance.

by DamonH on Dec 8, 2009 10:41 PM EST up reply actions

He is scheduled to interview this Friday

according to the article. As FSUn said, I don’t see him getting the job, but if he does, I wish him the best.

by tricknole on Dec 8, 2009 10:48 PM EST up reply actions

I'll go ahead and differ

Some close say that they think Trick would leave if given the chance. Clint’s not 100% solid, he’s 61, etc.

Also, I’d like to see how congruent Jimbo/Coley’s offensive plans are with the zone blocking scheme Trickett employs.

Smells like an FSUn article to me.

by DamonH on Dec 8, 2009 10:54 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, but isn't the philosiphy different?

I think that Hudson could eat Datko and it wouldn’t equal one of their lineman.

by DamonH on Dec 8, 2009 11:50 PM EST up reply actions

Ah, gotcha

Yea, they use bigger OL despite using the zone blocking scheme as well.

I don’t think what we’re doing is wrong or anything. Trickett’s system seems to be getting athletic guys with a good frame that are underweight, as to allow the adding of good weight to their frame. It’s just that when Trickett came in our OL were pathetic, so these younger/smaller guys had to come in and contribute immediately. These guys should be expected to take a few years to add some weight before contributing, and within a year or two we should see that.

So if in 2 years our replacement OL are still smaller, then we may have a problem. I would prefer to have 300-315 lb OL and maybe so would Fisher, hence the new SC coach (bigger players in general). I don’t think Trickett cares about size. He wants mean, intelligent, athletic players. But again, we’ll see.

by tricknole on Dec 9, 2009 12:55 AM EST up reply actions

Ok, we're on the same page now...

I’m just pumped about the changes that Jimbo and El Martillo will be bringing in turning us into more of an SEC type team, and I was wondering how we were gonna pull that off with 90lb guards and tackles

by DamonH on Dec 9, 2009 5:48 PM EST up reply actions

Oh, woops

A few years ago I thought WVU was considering interviewing Trickett for HC after Rich Rod left. I don’t recall what all went down with that. I confused you and subsequently myself in bringing that up. My bad.

Honestly, I couldn't tell you

I bumped into him at The Palace in summer 08. He was there with some OL assistant student guy. I guess he was with Alabama in 07? And I guess it’s possible “Chance” has since moved on.

Ok, according to seminoles.com, Chance is the middle son, a college junior (senior now?) and Travis was/is a videographer for FSU. Guess I bumped into Travis.

I was wondering if he'd take Gonzalez

I assume it would be as OC, as he legitimately should have been OC as opposed to Adazzio this year. But wondering if Strong would use his first HC opportunity and give the OC job to a first timer? Maybe he’ll look for someone with OC experience? I guess it depends on what type of offense he’ll want to run, spread or otherwise…

by Pinto on Dec 8, 2009 8:14 PM EST reply actions

It is a double edged sword. Good for the reasons we all appreciate. Bad because it creates another DC vacancy and competion for FSU.

Maybe not if we are close, but that doesn’t appear to be the case.

Great pick for Louisville

I live here in Louisville and the masses were miserable with Kragthorpe. He cut off a lot of great recruiting areas and removed the best players off the team. Any player that had any character issues was removed from the team.

by TimScribble on Dec 8, 2009 8:28 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Too true.

Any issue, no matter how miniscule, got you canned.

Kragthorpe’s ineptitude drove away the Brohm family who basically was Louisville football for years.

I wish they’d kept Kragthorpe and Strong had gone elsewhere. I’ll just tell myself that he won’t be able to recruit quite as well at Louisville as he did in Florida, and make myself happy that way.

by wildcatlh on Dec 8, 2009 9:02 PM EST reply actions

Petrino was able to recruit very well in Florida when he was there

In 2004, NC State was only team in DIV 1 CFB with more Floridians on it’s roster than Louisville, I believe. There are plenty of kids in FLA to go around. We just need to make sure we get the Roll Royce Recruits, they can have the backwash!

ZING

Did you see all the guys on Around The Horn yesterday? I forget who won the showdown, but he did his 30 seconds on Tebow and remembering his glory or whatever. Well the 3 other journalists all started fake sobbing and Tony Reali laughed and had to tell them to stop. Timmah is a joke. And Colin Cowherd today, when discussing Crist talking to the Jag’s owner about drafting Tebow, said, “A 5th round back up QB isn’t going to save your franchise. Move them to Los Angeles. They’re getting a new stadium and they won’t have to do all sorts of gimmicks to sell tickets.”

by tricknole on Dec 8, 2009 11:16 PM EST up reply actions

He's right

If the Jags want to save their franchise, they’d try to win, not draft fullbacks.

Of course he's right

My point was the media isn’t caught up in the Tebow love affair anymore. And how the heck did Jacksonville get an NFL team anyways? That’s absurd. The LA Jags sounds nice, I think…? It’s short like the Rams.

Being from Jax...

Most Jag fans are, unfortunately, fair weather gator fans. The type that wont shut up when they are winning and cant be found when the gators are not. It makes for a really crappy fan base during the up and downs of a new nfl franchise while everyone is spending their money on UF crap because they are the ones winning. Also, the stadium was built just to bring a superbowl to the 904. It is entirely too big for the city and the football going population . Thats why it only sells out on special occasions, not jags games. This is also a reason that the Jags are often blacked out in Jacksonville, furthering the fan base problem. All of this and the talk of a desperation draft of tebow only make me glad I am dolphins fan because the Jags are not going to last.

So with UF coaches leaving and Tebow too could the UF

Dynisty be coming to an end. I know they still have a ton of talent there but who far back are we from them. Most of the time I dont care about beating UF but at the same time I know if we can beat UF then we can beat any other team in the ACC. (at least at this moment.)

Dynasty came to an end against Alabama. It lasted 3 years, bravo, not even as long as USC's this decade

and potentially shorter than Texas’, too, if Texas wins.

They should see a significant dropoff without Tebow. He WAS that team. I could see 9-3 next year (not bad at all, but no “dynasty”).

There's a distinct advantage

to recruiting on the backside of another teams success. Some players like the idea of being part of the next story. Not adding on to the glory of another. The best example is our recruiting success on the backside of Miami’s titles, Of course there were violation issues at the time from FU and the Canes which aided our roster. But the benefit was the teams of the 90’s. In total, the change in staff in hogtown and the change in regime in Tally will work to our advantage.
We are moving forward.

@TomDienhart: Some early names I hear for Charlie Strong’s Louisville staff: Billy Gonzales; Vance Bedford; Bill Miller.

Vance Bedford coaches CB’s, could hurt UF even more.

It was already rumored that he may follow Strong to UofL as his OC. Bedfords name came up today. UF and UT is losing quite a bit of their assistants.

Gonna be interesting how this whole UT recruiting hostesses situation unfolds.

So with the Gator dynasty crumbling does Meyer take off for ND?

I still say no, but it has to look more enticing to him now… no more Harvin, no more Mullen, no more Tebow, no more Strong.

by FSUjab on Dec 9, 2009 1:41 PM EST reply actions

Waited too long

I think the only way Urban leaves for ND is if he calls them as they seem to be a ways into it with Kelly. Although I think UF is about to take a step back, some people are getting carried away a bit IMO. UF’s run has turned a lot of high school kids into Gator bandwagon riders and we have struggled for so long that most kids don’t see us as on the same level as UF. Case in point, a Gator team that we are ready to rag on could easily win 9 regular season games next year and that would be seen as a bad season. If we win 9 games next year people will be ecstatic. Unless we crush them head to head, it will be a multi-year task to get on UF’s level when it comes to public reception.

gaytors going down

losing coordinators does and will hurt any football program if the replacement isn’t as good. obviously adazio is light years behind mullen which is why the gaytors looked basic against teams with a decent defense (arkansa, lsu, tennesee, ALABAMA) 4 games the gaytors would have lost without charlie strong’s defense….. if you dont believe me, look at when things went south for us…. there is NO WAY mark richt would have started chris rix for 4 years and he never improved a bit. i look forward to the gaytor years & the NOLES gettin back to the top
