Antone: Biggest bust of 2005?
Interesting article here as Scout takes a look back at the 5-star studs from the 2005 recruiting class, now mostly on it's way out.
By their reckoning, FSU's own Antone Smith may have been the biggest bust of that year's recruiting class (or at least the highest-ranked). Callahan Bright and Fred Rouse (groan) are also two FSU recruits on their bust list.
Scout also had a competing list detailing the 5-star studs who panned out from 05.
Antone's final FSU career stats: 492 carries, 2,253 yards (4.6 ypc), 26 touchdowns. Year-by-year rushing (carries, yards, TDs): 2005: 36-188-3. 2006: 88-456-5. 2007: 191-817-3. 2008: 177-792-15
So agree or disagree with their list, and who else in that class was a boom or bust?

How could Smith be a bigger bust than Rouse?
Rouse was #6 on the rivals 100, Smith wasn’t even top 10.
I was very frustrated by what Antone Smith gave us, but when you look at his career stats, 2253 yards and 26 touchdowns are some big numbers. He wasn’t as fast/strong/explosive as I hoped, but he had some good games and you got the feeling that he was never used quite the way he was meant to be used. His first 2 years he had a Heggins/McHale OL and JB as coordinator plus he was a backup. His last 2 years he ran a lot from the gun and he himself said that he didn’t feel as comfortable with this, he likes being in the I better.

Fred brought the Funk to smoking trees.
He’s my biggest bust that year. Very disappointing class.

Disappointment? Perhaps. Bust? Not any more.
I would say that overall, Antone’s career was disappointing. However, a single act from last year has changed my perception of Tone and I will never refer to him as a “bust”. It was a stutter-skip-hop-surge on a 3rd and 20 in the rain. As Harry once said, “…..you TOTALLY REDEEMED YOURSELF!” Well, not totally, but it meant a lot to me.

Yep
That was one of my favorite plays ever and I will always remember that as Antone’s biggest play at FSU.

Not his fault
Antone only this past year got a line that came close to being able to run block.

Not Impressed
From the weird injuries (that should have kept him in the line-up) to the continuous shoestring tackles, I’m ready to see new blood. Smith had a decent senior year, more so because we became a running team, but if he could have learned to shake some tackles or actually break some, and not trip over hand tackles, he could have easily broken 1000 yards.
He played with heart and stayed out of trouble, but let’s see the heavy hitters and mover coming out of the backfield.

Stepped up in 2008...
…but it was never going to reach the pinnacle everyone had set for him. He was FINALLY able to flash that breakaway speed several times last year, but he turned out to the be Anti-Jeff Chaney; that athleticism and natural improvisation to elude tackles is not in Tone’s repertoire.

Compared to our other 5-stars recently though...
He was a sleeper.
Rouse
Bright
Warren
Rolle
Lee
That’s just ridiculous. The last rivals 5-star to live up to his potential at FSU was Leon Washington, who is the only guy in the rivals database for us who didn’t underachieve as a 5 star, and we still completely misused him. He wasn’t even recruited as a RB, or at least he wasn’t listed as one, he was a corner.

You could argue Sims lived up the hype
I didn’t think he did, but at least he qualified and started for a few years. Though I always thought AJ was better.

I though Ernie lived up to the 5 star status.
Not number 1 in the nation status.

I thought he was a good but not great college LB.
Not a 5 star in my opinion, but that’s just me.

Poorly Coached
He had the talent and I think that, if he had been in Fisher’s system from the beginning, he could have corrected many of the issues he had both in technique and weight training. I read an article last spring about how Fisher had changed a great deal of his approach and that helped him come together his last year. He was also injured a good bit in 2008 or I think he would have put together a 1000 yard season. He was also behind a VERY young line. He may go pro and, if he does, he will do well.
That brings up the next question, will he get drafted?

no
he just dont have the size. also going to the draft this year is RB like OSU Wells, Knowshawn UGA, and the RB from Mish St. I think there ate like 4 or 5 more good ones out there I dont think this is they year for RB. WR yes but not RB.
