All-ACC Recruiting Class

I stole this idea from www.rivalryesq.com (Big10 blog).  Here are the top ranked names at each position.  We'll be hearing from some of these guys shortly.  I prefer ESPN's rankings because they evaluate the player and his immediate potential as opposed to rivals.com, who tends to evaluate the player more on eventual nfl potential and places a lot of weight on a kid's 40 time, vertical leap, etc.  I try to include any prospect graded as a 79 or higher :

Scouts Inc. High School Grading System
90-100: Rare Prospect
Player demonstrates rare abilities and can create mismatches that have an obvious impact on the game. Has all the skills to take over a game and could be an impact player as a true freshman.

80-89: Outstanding Prospect
Player has the ability to create mismatches against most opponents and could contribute as a true freshman.

For the record, the ACC signed the 2nd most ESPNU150 prospects (23) of any conference (SEC was 1st with an incredible 52).  The ACC pulled 45 of the Rivals 250 (2nd most).  Here's the breakdown:

POSITION NAME SCHOOL HEIGHT WEIGHT ESPN RK ESPN GRADE RIVALS RK RIVALS GRADE
QB Tajh Boyd Clem 6' 1" 208 #5 QB 82 #4 QB 4* (6.0)

QB Sean Shroeder Mia 6' 0" 186 #29 QB 78 #42 QB

The ACC did well at the Quarterback position as they grabbed two of the top 10 quarterbacks in the nation.  No other ACC teams nabbed a top 20 quarterback.  The ACC has lacked consistently good quarterback play for several years now and prospects may have been scared away by the relative youth at the position.  Additionally, the ACC defenses are not quarterback friendly.  Keep in mind, however, that ACC quarterbacks typically do very well in the NFL (Matt Ryan, Phillip Rivers), and that might help this position in the future.  The last two in this list are primarily runners.  Florida State's Will Secord ranks 60th as he is not really expected to be a starter.

The ACC pulled in four of the top 20 running back prospects nationally, which is a good haul.  Consider that Brown hasn't actually signed yet.  This is a very impressive haul for the ACC.  Rivals rates Caleb Porzell a 4*, and he doesn't even make this list.

Tight End was difficult to evaluate because many of these kids are categorized as athletes or defensive players.  Thomas is widely considered by experts to be a tight end and could be a serious contributor early.  Windle may surprise some.  FSU didn't sign a tight end this year and should be in the running for some of the better tight ends in 2010.

I decided to include wideouts inside the top 40, allowing for each team in the top 20 to take two.  There's a trend here:  The ACC is not coveting to a bunch of scatback like wideouts because they are not running the spread.  I think this is a good haul of wideouts, but not a great one.  Also note that VaTech pulled in a nice JUCO wideout 4* (5.8) Rivals.  Overall, this is a disappointing class of wide receivers for the ACC.

Offensive tackle is a crucial position and the ACC pulled in some good prospects here.  I really like Jay's film, but he is injury prone.  FSU's gem (Aubrey Phillips) doesn't fare well in ESPN's rankings, though his jumping from school to school and late bloomer nature may have something to do with that as he was evaluated as a junior.  He tore up the Army All American game.  I love UNC tackle Brennan Williams, as does rivals (high 4*, #13 OT), but he's a 77 on ESPN, and thus not on this list.  Rivals also likes Brandon Thomas, calling him the #14 OT, at 4*'s, but ESPN rates him a 76 and places him at guard.  Miami picked up a solid JUCO tackle (4* rivals) in Johnson.  A very deep class of offensive tackles for the ACC.

Often times, Guards are not highly rated coming out of high school, as the best offensive linemen almost always play offensive tackle.  In fact, only 31 guards rated 78 or higher and only 16 were 80 or above.  I think UNC is building a monster of a program.

Because of its location, the ACC has long produced the best passrushers.  Reggie White, Lawrence Taylor, and Bruce Smith all came from the Appalachian mountains.  I don't know why those mountains produce the world's best pass rushers, but they do.  Julius Peppers, Mario Williams, Peter Boulware, and Everette Brown are also from the region.  The ACC nabbed 14 of the top 53 defensive ends this year, and it is little wonder why the conference produces the best defenses and defensive players (most defensive players drafted and 1st rounders over the last 5 years).  Taking 7 of the top 20 is particularly impressive.

Look at the variance between the ESPN rank and the Rivals rank.  The ACC did well at the DT spot, but nowhere near as well as they did at the defensive end spot.  7 of the top 25 is impressive, but I expect a better haul next year.  Rivals calls BC commit Dillon Quinn a 5.9 4*, but he's only a 70 by ESPN.  Rivals calls Miami commit Luther Robinson a 5.8 4*, but he's a 76 by ESPN.

7 of the top 28 corners including 2 of the top 5 is a good showing for the ACC.  There may be many other players who switch to corner, and indeed rivals has some of them designated as corners.  ACCdefensive backs have been excellent in the NFL and this year will against see many drafted.  Two major snubs here-- Rivals has VT commit Jarrod Williams and NCST Commit Jarvis Byrd as 4*'s, but espn pays them no love.

Thoughts

- I am glad we get our away game with UNC out of the way this year.
- Very exciting to see Jaccobi McDaniel’s grade
- Downs is the best athlete in the nation, top three recruit in nation at safety
- McAllister has an exciting grade as well
- Jenkins had a good grade, but is he a finished product?
- Some of the ESPN (and Rivals) ratings make you scratch your head
- Rodney Smith looks to have great future, judging by his ESPN (not any stock in potential) and Rivals (too much stock in potential) grades
- ACC looks to have a bright future

Very nice work

One slight correction is you have Joshua Adams going to FSU.

Great information

There is a lot of information here. Yes the SEC out recruited the ACC but I am fine with it as long as FSU out recruits the SEC.

It is noteworthy that FSU signed 2 of the top ten running backs the ACC brought in and the top defensive tackle in the nation. I wasn’t familiar with the fact that Stinson was regarded this high among ACC defensive ends. We are going to need him.

I remember when Demps was recruited there was some nashing of teeth on various boards about his talent level. How things change especially when the Georgia player of the year Reid comes aboard with him. Great stuff here.

Where FSU is down in this comparison was offensive line and quarterback where we are already stacked. I think Secord was just what we need. Forget the three stars, Matt Ryan was a three star also.

You can almost see the development of

a conference that rivals the SEC in 3-5 years. There is a lot of talent joining the ranks of the UNC, Miami, FSU and Clemson. With proper coaching (thats they key to the latter two) if these 4 teams can consistently compete on a national level, we are there (maybe not better, but definitely giving the SEC a run for their money)

I also think the coaching is 2nd to the SEC

in the near future. With Jimbo, Butch Davis, Johnson and potentially Shannon we could compete to the Les Miles (who is an overrated game coach, but a good recruiter none-the-less), Saban and Urban.

my bad

for some reason i thought it said “my” ranking meaning Uncensoreds as well as ESPN player rating.

I see what u mean on the same grade for the player. I thought when tied they would still list the better player above on another. Since u gotta have a tie break haha. Even seeing them as the same to me it’s surprising since i thought thompson was above lonnie with not much doubt.

by Cee on Feb 15, 2009 6:46 PM EST up reply actions

They are both rated a 79... which is "decent" but not great.

The real test might come when (if) Lonnie flops at running back. We need Downs to play wideout with Easterling’s career in Jeopardy. Will Lonnie play safety to allow Downs to play Wideout, for the benefit of the team Lonnie supposedly loves? Or will he insist on being a backup runningback.

I still want downs at safety. Seeing him do so well at safety when only playing there for one week against that talent he went up against that WOWs me. I’m thinking with the depth at safety we have now that u will be right. I’d rather play guys where they are the best at and not a position of need.

WR i’m not worried at all on. Easterling was a good 3rd down receiver basically. He can be replaced imo. If fortson comes on this year like i think he will we’ll be fine. Given that bert stays outta trouble. I think easterling going down means we need bert to stay outta trouble that much more. If he plays it smart we’ll be fine.

by Cee on Feb 15, 2009 6:49 PM EST up reply actions

Keep in mind that those allstar games are a controlled environment

You can only play Man coverage or cover-2. No blitzing. Very simple responsibilities for the safety. The offense doesn’t get to do tricky stuff. I think people are really putting a lot of stock into his all-star game performance (which was excellent)

by Bud Elliott on Feb 15, 2009 6:53 PM EST up reply actions

i thought that

would be better for the qb. No need on worrying about the blitz and where they are gonna come from. You just find the hole in the zone and worry on that.

Seems like a lot less pressure being a qb.

I just looked at the depth chart and think it’s basically lock city on Downs being WR now. i didn’t realize myself that we have so few guys there wowowo was i wrong.

We have

Bert
Fortson
Rod Owens
Louis Givens
It says wade/avis commack but i thought those guys were awful or hurt all year.

If fortson doesn’t progress like we should and bert gets in trouble. We are sooooooooooo gonna be in trouble. WOW. I’m blown away after doing a lil research. Ever see a guy do a 360 on my positions on downs so fast? :(

Fields

Eric Fields didnt sign a LOI with Clemson, he is so dumb that apparently he couldnt be talked into even taking his ACT/SAT before February, and so no one can have him on an official visit and so he signed with a JUCO in Mississippi.

Good breakdown, thanks for forwarding it along.

I agree with FSUncensored

Downs can probably be a great safety but not as a freshman. He is awfully thin right now. I don’t see him coming up to stop too many runs, he would get killed. He needs at least a year to beef up if he is going that route.

He is better off at least for his freshman year at wide receiver and he will see more playing time there also as he is needed.

If you think Downs would start over Parks you haven’t keep up with Parks.

idea as long as he would be willing to move to FS. Though, I dont know how much FS’s are expected in run support in college. Rover, for sure, but the FS is typically pass first.

His size reminds me of Pat Watkins.

I looked it up. Pat Watkins was 6-4 190 coming into college. 2 inches taller and 5 lbs lighter. He didn’t contribute (dont remember who was in front of him) until his second season but became a very good player. He left college weighing 210 (Not great, but not terrible).
