Quarterback Will Secord Decommits from Arkansas and Commits to Florida State
Will Secord. He's a quarterback from Texas. He really enjoyed the sites from his weekend visit. I posted an extensive review of him here (some in the comment section as well).
For the record, Secord shaved his number (7) into the back of his head a few months ago. He's a good baseball player. I'll defer to QB Guru's Petrino and Fisher on this one, while maintaining that Secord is no threat to any major 2010 QB recruit. Jimbo has his work seriously cut out for him if he wants Secord's mechanics to be even halfway decent (judging off his Junior film, posted in the linked review).
Welcome to the Seminole Family, WILL!
Also... I have even more reason to believe that D'Vo will focus exclusively on baseball, thus freeing up another scholarship. That is unnoficial still, however, and I will not update the depth chart until FSU announces the move.

welcome aboard, Will.
Greg Reid is next, hopefully

Not sure if this applies to Will...
But how do you coach a lefty with bad mechanics? Watch him in a mirror and try to figure it out? It’s going to be a challenge.
lol
IRONIC THEY GO TO TEXAS WHEN WE HAVE MR. FOOTBALL NEXT DOOR
very pissed.
I know we would be taking a risk with not getting a QB in this class. But i think this is a waste of a scholarship IMO. With our number cruch on scholarships now you have to take risks and be very careful who you give a scholly to.
Mechanics
If Secord has poor mechanics but we still signed him then why did we not sign AJ? The knock on AJ has been poor mechanics as well……..I will take a Florida guy over any out of state player every time if everything else is equal between the two recruits.
I'm gonna just
trust the coaches on this one.
Jimbo obviously sees something in this kid or wants to use him a certain way. Let’s see how that pans out.
I'm going to trust Jimbo on this one too
Jimbo and his staff has been the only bright spot in this pathetic program. I will trust him until he proves otherwise. Besides, this guy is going to be holding EJ’s clipboard for four years anyways, barring any injuries.
This dysfunctional coaching hierarchy is not helping us reach our goals.
no edit option, but
I probably should have used something other less harsh than “pathetic” to describe our football program. I guess it just makes me bitter thinking about how FSU used to be the place every QB wanted to go.
This dysfunctional coaching hierarchy is not helping us reach our goals.
I also trust Jimbo but I have to believe there is something else going on with AJ for us not to be all over him, especially taking Secord instead. Perhaps in the coming days/weeks the AJ deal will come to light. Otherwise I think we missed the boat on Mr. Graham. Besides if Secord (and granted it’s a big ’"if") turns out to be a bust then we probably have Christian Green coming in next year anyway.
Would you agree that Secord is a bit of a reach? Also, is he the only reach thus far in our class in your opinion? I happen to think our class is pretty solid to date.
Maybe it's upside?
Think AJ has the head or arm to play major college ball? Maybe there are serious questions about his ability to qualify or do even the simplest of major college academic work. I’m not sure
As far as Secord being a reach, yes and no. He clearly has a lot of potential and throws a pretty ball. If we fix his mechanics, he’ll be a good one. He doesn’t have superstar potential, however, and I echo those who question the signing.
Arm strength yes.
Head, not so sure as I know nothing about his grades, test scores etc., that tend to help decipher what is IQ is. It would be great to have the college version of the Wonderlic test would it not.
I have thought from day one that his IQ/scholastic aptitude is why we did not go after him from the get go but he is being recruited by Clemson, K-State etc., so I take it he is qualified.
Essentially my point is/was that if everything else is equal you go with the in state kid but Jimbo knows QB’s so we will get to see it play out.
Someone posted Arkansas' depth chart
They have like 6 QBs on scholarship for next year already.
Also, FSU is a bit more prestigious.

Im thinking there is something else behind this.
1 of 2 things
1) Jimbo sees something none of us see like he needs a good option QB to run behind Pounder and EJ. Someone to take a hit.
2) He wants someone else from the school. isnt this that coaches son. Lets see If My boy was playing at your college I would sent as many kids there to help him and what not.
Excellent point
Desman has made an excellent point and it has been mentioned here before. Fisher made a living raiding Texas talent when he was at LSU. I have mentioned also he signed Jarrett Lee the present LSU quarterback.
I don’t know if the Frisco, Texas area is a hotbed of talent or not but it would be worth checking on. Will at Arky faced a battle with Mallet and others quarterbacks there. He will also face major competition at FSU but it is the same old story everywhere, you have to compete.
Kenny Stabler and Steve Young should be happy they never had to depend on Spurrier to recruit them. Where would they be today?
I love having a lefthanded quarterback on board as a change of pace. Yes it presents a coaching challenge but it also presents a defensive coaching challenge for your opponent especially a quarterback who can roll out and throw on the run as it appears Will can do.
I saw him throw off the back foot some also but I also saw him step into a few and get some pretty good zip on the ball. Sometimes if you have the big arm like him you can lean back on the back foot and flip it out to receivers.
Message boards are a hoot and I enjoy them but at this point I won’t be so presemptive as to question Fisher and Petrino’s choice of a quarterback. They have both had pretty good results. Petrino has millions riding on making the right decisions also. I don’t think any of us do.
I still say Fisher needed that third quarterback to be grooming for the future with really only two in the fold right now. We now have three and guess what? They all have well above 3.0 grade point averages and Manuel will be studying at the maglab. It is very doubtful that any of them will be found passed out at Mickey D’s at 4:30 in the morning.

Last line had me cracking up.

secord
Based on his skill set and stats (especially the 15 picks as a SR!), I see a poor-man’s Drew Weatherford.
That would be a middle school QB.
