GREG REID IS A NOLE!!

GREG REID IS A NOLE!!

You can hear his actual commitment on Chantrant.com

What made you choose Florida State?
I wanted to win and the distance worked out for me.

Are you glad the recruiting process is over?
Yea, I am very glad it's over and I know I made the right choice in the school I
want to play for. And now I can relax and finish this year and get ready for next
year.

Will you be playing the Defensive Back position next year?
Yeah I will play defensive back and I liked the position coach that Florida State has so I think it will be fun to play for him.

How do you think Florida State will do next season?
I know they are coming off a couple seasons that are not up to the FSU standard, but we will surprise some people in the next 2-3 years. We will play for the national championship.

Do you have any personal goals for your freshman year or your career as a Seminole?
I just want to become a leader. The guy that keeps everyone focused on the field and on the sideline.

Greg Reid
ESPN's #2 rated CB prospect (15th overall prospect)
Rivals 5* 3 4 rated CB
Scout 4* #7 rated CB

Note:  Reid is a teammate of FSU commit Gerald Demps

Stats:  2008: Reid had 118 rushes for 1,242 yards and 16 touchdowns. He caught eight passes for 234 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, Reid had 28 total tackles with 21 solo, nine interceptions returned for 128 yards and one fumble recovery.  Reid returned 14 punts for 267 yards and five kicks for 85 yards.

Awards:  The senior was named All Class Player of the Year by AJC, 5A First Team Athlete AJC, GSWA All-State First Team Athlete, Press Register's Super Southeast 120 (#13), Parade All-American All-Purpose and selected for the Under Armour All-Star Game in Orlando.

Announcement (TONIGHT): Reid will announce tonight, from Austin's steakhouse in Valdosta, GA.   I spoke with the host of the radio show who will be broadcasting his commitment:

You can stream the show "live" from Austin's Steakhouse at talk921.com from 6-8 (Eastern)
I imagine they will milk most of the show before the big announcement (the
show will be 'live' from Austin's Steak House just off I-75 at exit 16)
Good luck to you guys...he's a special talent
Scott

Scouting Report

It's us versus UGA (with Alabama on the outside)  for Greg's signature.  He would be a great get and we have a decent shot.

Reid.....

For some strange feeling I think we get Reid…I think he liked Mickey and Demps is coming here. I think he will have a better chance of early playing time here too. I really think we get him.

Great start, Uncensored! Let's see how Tomahawk Nation does NSD.

Quick question: Does this mean you’re back with us? Or are you posting from a secret remote location?

I like Reid and Debose

but I think Reid and Charles helps us the most, we really need a more active TE. Nothing against Caz, but we do not utilize the TE position. I realize he needs to help in blocking for our OL but I think Charles makes a huge impact at FSU.

by UnstopaNole99! on Feb 3, 2009 3:45 PM EST up reply actions

You like our chances to get Debose?

This is the one that confuses me the most. I’ve seen nothing to indicate it was anything other than a courtesy visit.

Charles will play H-Back, a sort of hybrid TE

by Bud Elliott on Feb 3, 2009 3:47 PM EST up reply actions

the only reason why i like him, even though I don't necessarily think we get him

is the fact that he sees we lost PP and he might get a chance to play early. That might sway him to come here. out of the five you have listed those are who I have a feeling( no inside knowledge, just hoping/speculating) if we only got two of them

If this is true, it's a big turn of events

UGA has Branden Smith as premier corner recruit. The UGA folks were posting all about Reid in the AJC. So something must’ve turned him off on his visit if this is true. I’d have to see your source to believe it though.

How is Alabama’s CB situation?

More AJC Headlines

Reid plastered in AJC again… WWGRD?
http://blogs.ajc.com/georgia-football-recruiting/2009/02/03/what-will-greg-reid-do-the-state-awaits-tuesday-night/

FSU is the only one out of the three schools not getting another premier corner. He was quoted in AJC on Jan 30th, here http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/shared-blogs/ajc/cfbrecruit/entries/2009/01/30/lowndes_allamer.html saying this:

"Q: What really went wrong with Florida?

A: ‘Florida was my favorite team growing up, so I committed to them as soon as I had the chance my junior year. Then I started looking closer at the depth chart in December —- who was coming back —- and they are stacked at cornerback. Florida has a great program, and I love the players and coaches, but it’s four years of my life, and I have to do what’s best for me. There are better opportunities for me to contribute earlier elsewhere.’"

I think we all knew his intentions with playing time, but it’s good to read it with quotes around it… directly from him.

I think we get him.

great job to all contributors

I just signed up for the seven day free trial on warchant. The available information there is extensive, but Tomahawk is fairly comprehensive and I see no reason to ever pay for recruiting information. Hopefully I will be able to contribute here in the future.

by NorthernHaze on Feb 3, 2009 5:24 PM EST reply actions

This is getting interesting

I think this next 24 hours is a real test of Fisher’s recruiting accumen. Yeah, I know he’s handcuffed, but you can still do a lot of things with two hands tied behind your back.

If we whiff on all the remaining players “in play” (Reid, Charles, Debose, Brown, et al). that tells me that our worst fears about dysfunction are true AND that it’s possible if not downright likely that Fisher is not a strong closer..

If we get Reid and/or Charles it tells me we are weighted down by a tired old regime, but can still get some things done. and that Fisher will likely flourish when he’s the top dog.

Anything more than that — that is, Reid AND Charles AND somebody else, and it tells me that Fisher is the man when it comes to recruiting and things are going to be fine so long as this is Bowden’s last year.

by fsunole23 on Feb 3, 2009 5:28 PM EST reply actions

Charles and Reid please. I love the Reid/Downs defensive backfield. That is scary. I also love the thought of Charles at TE. I want a playmaker there again, because we can run the single back 3 wide, and have 5 true receiving threats on the field (I think Jermaine Thomas starts this year at RB).

They said 5. No Rocky Top to start out..

They said there are fans for FSU, UGA, Bama, Auburn, and Miami around…. Who knows… I’m guessing Auburn and Miami fans just ate there wearing a shirt tonight. Scout and Rivals are there.

by NOLEinTX on Feb 3, 2009 6:10 PM EST up reply actions

I'm guessing removal of hats in this order:

1. Miami
2. Auburn
3. Bama
Then he picks FSU… That gives me a good 45 minutes before I have to be back.

by FSUSOM on Feb 3, 2009 6:20 PM EST up reply actions

My sources are saying UGA has been eliminated and it is really a

Bama/FSU battle. Now will he make sure those two are final, not sure? I could see him leaving the UGA in the top two to keep the suspense going.

by Seminole64 on Feb 3, 2009 6:24 PM EST up reply actions

Well once it's down to two then you just pick the one you are going to commit to.

I’m only speculating on him going to FSU though. Logic tells me FSU, but who knows. You never know what an 18 year old is gonna pick. UGA is soo highly touted within the state borders. You grow up hearing “Go Dawgs” everywhere you go… stories of Herschel from everyone though that was over 15 years ago…

by NOLEinTX on Feb 3, 2009 6:28 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think UGA is any more prevalent in S. Georgia than either UF or FSU.

I grew up on the northside of the boundary and it was clearly Nole country.

by coonhound on Feb 3, 2009 6:30 PM EST up reply actions

If he was from north of the...

gnat line… then it becomes more heavily UGA country. Columbus sways a bit towards Auburn, the extreme NW is mixed with UT and there is some Clehmpson fans in the NE. But below the gnat line, the Florida schools could own.

The night before signing day

I threw this together in 5 minutes, so don’t think I spent all day on this.

‘Twas the night before signing day, when all through the house
Not an assistant was stirring, not even Amato.
The fax machines were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St Bobby soon would be there.

The coaches were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of Debose danced in their heads.
And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long february’s nap.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should pursuit,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tinny recruits.

With a little old driver, so lively and blobby,
I knew in a moment it must be St Bobby.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

“Now Willie! now, Jacobbi! now, Demonte and Lonnie!
On, CJ! On, Justin! on Jajuan and Brandon!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!”

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of footballs, and St Bobby too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little foot.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St Bobby came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
A bundle of letters he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.

His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the faxes, then turned with a jerk.
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
“Happy signing day to all, and to all a good-night!”

by tdchrisdavis on Feb 3, 2009 7:48 PM EST up reply actions

It not wishful thinking

Brown does in fact want to be a Nole, his parents are involved way more then they should be and hey want him to be a Gator. I wish I had a way to prove it to you but I don’t. I will say that if his parent step back and release that they don’t have to live the next 4 years with the decision he does, and they support him, he will be a Seminole. Brown will be the only commit that FSU would get the switch for.

by tdchrisdavis on Feb 3, 2009 8:20 PM EST up reply actions

No way. Rivals has him as "High" for ND and USC. Only Medium for FSU.

Rivals should really do a hotness meter. That’d probably sell some more subscriptions. Like rather than just using None, Low, Medium, High they could use some colors. ND and USC would be blood red, perhaps with steam coming off the top and FSU et al would be a mere pastel orange…perhaps a Syracuse orangey-red if there was a bit more interest than the other medium level schools.

Not to sharpshoot you, but do you have any reason to believe we might be faring better than others? Just proximity, as coonhound said before? I would love to get excited about getting a highly regarded safety like Starling, but I just don’t have any reason to feel like he’s ours.

*I guess that's what happens when you're getting scooped all over the web.

It’s become an entertainment site. An expensive one unless you’re already used to parting with the money. The information is free all over the web, provided by good people who aren’t beholden to FSU for coach and player interviews used for fluff pieces that are no better than the ones also found for free on the Tallahassee Democrat’s website or your local newspaper’s site (if that really is your thing). The messageboards have become completely inaccessible to the serious Nole fan due to Draconian moderating and… idiots?

I know, nothing new. Just thought some fresh eyeballs that are visiting tonight might like to know it’s not just them. That’s how a lot of us made it here.

From AJC on Reid's decision

http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/shared-blogs/ajc/cfbrecruit/entries/2009/02/03/greg_reid_choos.html

Reid had said there were three things he liked more about FSU than the other schools: 1) Early playing time, with the chance to start as a freshman; 2) Closest to home for family and friends to watch him play, with Tallahassee only 85 miles away, while Athens at 240 and Tuscaloosa, Ala., at 380; 3) Playing alongside his high school teammate, Gerald Demps, who is also committed to FSU.

Would have loved to see this guy wearing any of our 30 combinations of garnet/gold/not black/white jersey/pants.

Don’t mean to get on an Amato thread here, but he lost the guy by himself. Hoping the firechuckamato.com thing gets leased out to us by NC State guy… To be able to say multiple schools used it—potentially effectively—is pretty amazing. It’s sad that two major schools had to use it.

If so, sweet. What’s the best guess on available scholarships now? Somewhere between 1 to 3 left is what I am thinking.

by CFCNole on Feb 3, 2009 9:42 PM EST reply actions

I'm new to the whole college football recruiting...

How does this work…. we offer 30 scholarships expecting to only get, say… 20 recruits. We only have 25 free spots and we get 28 guys. Do we have to have an NFL-like preseason and steal money from guys who aren’t contributing? Do we call the guys who are signing later in the day and say… sorry, man. What’s the protocol here? Steal from fencing? Give a lot of guys greyshirts?

by NOLEinTX on Feb 3, 2009 9:49 PM EST up reply actions

Well, a one-sentence answer would say you're really not that far off.

It’s a little more organized than that though. And there’s strategy involved, and it’s played by the coaches and the recruits. And the numbers and ranges have narrowed to the point now that a situation like yours would be exaggerated, i.e., we only have a few targets left now and a few schollies still available. The coaches know how many they can take, and even we don’t know for sure what that number is right now because of coming NCAA sanctions, etc. Yes, greyshirts can play a role. You can’t drop a kid who has already committed. That’s suicide – think pipelines. All this said, let me just say that at this point if we end up with five 5-star guys wanting in tomorrow we would have a very good problem on our hands.

This isn’t the best answer, but it’s late and we have a big day tomorrow. Any help at all?

by TRMNole on Feb 3, 2009 10:40 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, so it comes down to trusting the coach's math.

As long as Carter isn’t punching the numbers we should be okay and not have to worry about it, I’m guessing.

by NOLEinTX on Feb 3, 2009 10:50 PM EST up reply actions

I'm pretty sure Carter is no longer allowed access to the staff's calculator after turning it upside-down and tricking Coach Bowden with the 55378008 = BOOBLESS gag.

And yeah, part of my problem with answering your question was making sure that I was actually answering it: The coaches know how many they can take and what they have to do to make the class happen, and they are prepared to act “on the fly” with changing scenarios as NSD unfolds.

by TRMNole on Feb 3, 2009 11:04 PM EST up reply actions

Right, that sounds good.

He’s tried it on everyone—including Amato. Apparently Tits McGee flashed him to prove he wasn’t actually BOOBLESS. Now only Carter knows if those things are real are not.

by NOLEinTX on Feb 3, 2009 11:11 PM EST up reply actions

Definitely glad I clicked that.

For the record, that would not count as surviving. Shaking at the thought of Uncensored screaming out-of-context in the middle of his presentation about the NASAA (stocks, not space).

seatbelt locked up. Couldn’t get it off. Had to borrow the subway sammich guy’s leatherman to cut it off (on the way home). I’m about 6’3 215 and there was no slack.

NOLEinTX, does what Unc said make sense about 25 entering in the fall vs. signing, etc.?

We could sign 35 kids tomorrow. (We won’t, but he wants you to understand the process.) When all is said and done, come fall only 25 of those kids can count toward this class. The rest = greyshirts, juco, whatever else.

possible BIG surprise tomorrow.

You two are pretty sure on Brown now, huh?

Got my attention. Any chance you’ll give me a confidence factor?

(Not meant to be related to your “surprise” unless I hit it. 64, you seem ready to hold up a copy of the signed LOI! I’ll hand-deliver it for you.)

I guess some Rivals writers reached the Brown household and his sister answered. Then she said, “here is Gary.”

Not really. I guess when the Rivals guys called Brown and his mom were MIA for several hours.

What’s this about Orelus being forced to take a greyshirt?

It seems like a very, very bad idea to be playing games with Glade Central H.S.

Yeah, I'm out for the night. Gotta be rested for long discussions tomorrow.

I am going to be WORTHLESS at work. See you all on here tomorrow. I hope to be seeing lots of exclamation marks at the end of names in all caps. For instance, PHILIP THOMAS!!!!! ANDRE DEBOSE!!!! (first name) BARKLEY!!!!!111 … not starting a rumor on anybody. No one take this post seriously. I know how on edge everyone is about any hearsay….

Brown

OK, maybe I’m missing something, but why is everyone saying Gary Brown is going to sign with FSU? My gut is not buying that one.

This dysfunctional coaching hierarchy is not helping us reach our goals.

Lots of buzz around Gary Brown to Florida State. I think it’s a small possibility and in the end Brown will stay with the Gators.
Andre Debose has stated that he is a Gator and will sign w/ UF tomorrow. I am still being told he will sign w/ FSU. Those who are telling me this are a little less confident however. I think he signs w/ UF.

looking at his previous comments, he has shown himself to be pretty reliable.

I’ve been away from the site for a few weeks and glad to come back to this…and see that Greg Reid is ready to sign with FSU.

noticed in the recruiting thread there was mention of Wells

Did we not get him or what? I completely missed whatever was said [doin the hand flying over the head thing while whooshing]

I really like the idea of having a stud at TE

by Miaminole on Feb 3, 2009 10:52 PM EST reply actions

Orelus the center?

He’s deciding between FSU and WVU. I think we’ll still get him.

Good to hear on Phillips, I was just thinking to myself that I thought he would pick FSU tomorrow, I guess he couldn’t wait!

We’ve got, by my count, 6 guys left we have a reasonable shot at who may or may not be Noles, and their commitment/announcement times:
Orelus – ?
Debose – 9
Charles – after NSD
Brown – 10
Hicks – ?
Starling – 12

I believe that is everyone. Atkins, Phillip Thomas and Trent Richardson are the only other names that I think we have a chance in a million. But there’s probably a Taiwan Easterling type that will commit. On second though, that probably won’t happen. I remember we got Easterling in large part because our class was weak and small that year and we had scholarships to use. That is not the case this year.

Best wishes to MattD and his family.

Something to ponder... could be way out there.

Don’t know how much longer Warrick Dunn has in the NFL, but wouldn’t he be a good recruiter/running back coach? Don’t know about his coaching abilities. Not sure if he’s done anything more than Pop Warner stuff—if that. But the guy has to be one of the most genuine individuals you’ll meet. He has his charity. He can relate to all the guys with a hard home life… no one will trump his story. It’s been said a thousand times when he was at FSU and in the NFL. That was going through my head today before Greg Reid committed. His father is in jail in Albany, GA and guys like that would be sold on Dunn. After Bowden leaves he could be the good-hearted guy that the parents fall in love with. Plus, he’s black, so that helps keep our staff from being one-dimensional in that regard. Dunn actually played on a National Title Winning team in the highest point of FSU football. Anything is better than Carter. Thoughts?

by NOLEinTX on Feb 3, 2009 11:51 PM EST reply actions

never even thought about that

but i have to admit, I would love to see him on the sideline for us on Saturdays knowing he is helping the players become better men the rest of the week,

by Miaminole on Feb 3, 2009 11:53 PM EST up reply actions

I think he wants to do more humanitarian work, but

He’d be excellent. RB coach is a “coach” in name only. It’s basically your best recruiter spot.

by Bud Elliott on Feb 3, 2009 11:56 PM EST up reply actions

He could pull the track stars too.

Not sure if we want more Michael Ray Garvins to put all time to track and little to football. He was effective as a KR this year, but would’ve been great to see him contribute more in the secondary. That’s beside the point though.

I was at work

and I ran to the bathroom to check iPhone around 830 and I literally screamed out “OH YEAHHHH!!!!!!”.

I came out and people were staring haha.

Im so pumped. this may have been said earlier but does anyone know how many more we can take? were at 20 now and I honestly have a feeling were gonna get a gift tomorrow.

Peter Warrick

I actually had the oppurtunity to talk to Peter Warrick the other day, and he told me that he wwas still trying to decide if he had a couple more arena years in him, but said that he would be VERY interested in coming back to FSU to do some type of coaching or just being involved with the program again. He was my FAVORITE player growing up, and I wanted to know what you guys thought about that….

by ChuckNole on Feb 4, 2009 2:38 AM EST reply actions

Last comment before I go to bed

I’d love it. I’d want him to go somewhere else first, however, to learn how to be a coach and eliminate any entitlement stuff. He could be an amazing recruiter.

by Bud Elliott on Feb 4, 2009 2:48 AM EST up reply actions

interesting

pretty powerful statement on “amazing” what differentiates him from the average ex nfl player? Didn’t he get in trouble for stealing shoes at fsu?

Being a coach i thought u would hafta have good character since u are molding young minds into making the right decisions and need to lead by example. It’s just about everyones 1st time living on their own, so they need good people around em.
