Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Wednesday Recruiting: National Signing Day Edition!

A huge thanks to everyone who assisted in putting this together.  Special thanks to Pbysh, who put together this awesome formatting job on his birthday!

Our first National Signing Day Post drew 320 comments in 3 hours.  People were having trouble reloading.  If you're bored, read through yesterday's thread (linked below).

Greg Reid Committed to the Noles!  You can hear his actual commitment on Chantrant.com Remember  "Why you should know about Greg Reid"?

4* guard Aubrey Phillips Committed to the Noles at Halftime of his basketball game!

That now gives FSU 20 commitments.  Remember, however, that Jenkins (DE) is an early entry, and that Stork (TE) counts towards the class of 2010.  I'd be shocked to see us take more than 4 more guys for the 2009 class (currently at 18).

Here are our commits (in the order they should sign their letters of intent "LOI'S")

LOIs in...

  • TE/OL Bryan Stork (
  • OL John Prior
  • K Dustin Hopkins
  • WR/CB Xavier Rhodes
  • OL Henry Orelus
  • DT Jacobbi McDaniel
  • RB Chris Thompson
  • DB Jajuan Harley
  • DE/DT Demonte McAllister
  • QB Will Secord
  • WR/Man Child Rodney Smith
  • RB Lonnie Pryor
  • LB C.J. Mizell
  • WR/S/Franchise Willie Downs
  • WR Willie Haulstead
  • DB Greg Reid
  • DB Gerald Demps
  • OL Aubrey Phillips
  • DB Justin Bright
  • ATH Dan Hicks (TE/ DE)
Willie Haulstead

Position: Wide Receiver

Measurables: 6-2/195/4.59

Videos: [1] [2]

Rankings:
- Rivals: #34 WR, #230 overall
- Scout: #48 WR
- ESPN: #32 WR

Signing Time:8:45

LOI in? Yes

Notes:
Powerful wide receiver that fits the mold Jimbo Fisher loves. Flirted with Michigan but will remain close to home.  Has GREAT hands.

Xavier Rhodes

Position: Wide Receiver

Measurables: 6-1.5/188/4.47

Videos: N/A

Rankings:
- Rivals: #75 WR (3*)
- Scout: #50 WR
- ESPN: #60 WR

Signing Time: 9AM

LOI in? Yes

Notes:
Although listed as a WR by all services, depth at the position will almost certainly make him end up as a CB, where he is very capable.  Could also play safety.  Put up ridiculous statistics in 6A Dade County football.

Will Secord

Position: Quarterback

Measurables: 6-2/204/4.66

Videos: [1]

Rankings:
- Rivals: #32 pro-style QB (3*)
- Scout: #57 QB
- ESPN: #60 QB

Signing Time: 9AM

LOI in?  Yes

Notes:
With D'Vontrey Richardson likely never taking a snap in a Seminole uniform again, depth at the QB position became important. A coach's son, Secord knows the game and Jimbo Fisher decided to offer late in the process, prompting him to take an official and switch his commitment from Arkansas to Florida State.  Jimbo Fisher and Bobby Petrino wanted him, so that says something.

Aubrey Phillips

Position: Offensive Tackle

Measurables: 6-6/ 312/ 5.1

Videos: None free

Rankings:
- Rivals: #25 OT, (4*)
- Scout: #40 OT (3**)
- ESPN: #92  OT

Signing Time: 9AM   Committed to FSU at halftime of his basketball game (02/03/09)

LOI in? Yes

Notes:
Rick Trickett hates fat linemen.  He wants guys with great feet and athleticism.  That he went after a kid of Phillips size is a testament to Phillips athleticism and potential.  He probably has 290lbs of goog weight and 20 of bad.  We beat out Auburn, Arkansas, and Tennessee for this kid.  he tore up the Army All-Star game.  Comes from a very good program (Olive Branch, Mississippi).  He has work to do, but clearly a kid who could blossom under Trickett.

Greg Reid

Position: Cornerback

Measurables:5-9/ 177/ 4.3

Videos: [1]

Rankings:
- Rivals: #4 CB, #27overall (5*)
- Scout: # 7 CB (4*)
- ESPN: #2 CB, #15 overall

Signing Time: Announced last night, signs @ 9AM.

LOI in? Yes

Notes: HAI= Hips, Acceleration & Instincts.  More here.
.

Gerald Demps

Position: Safety

Measurables: 5-11/187

Videos: N/A

Rankings:
- Rivals: #27 S (4*)
- Scout: #31 S
- ESPN: #7 S, #72 overall

Signing Time: 9AM

LOI in? Yes

Notes:
Goes to the same school as target Greg Reid.  Very versatile, some rumblings that the coaches want him to play corner.  Could possibly do it.

Demonte McAllister

Position: Defensive End/Tackle

Measurables: 6-3/265

Videos: N/A

Rankings:
- Rivals: #4 SDE, #70 overall (4*)
- Scout: #11 DT
- ESPN: #3 DE, #45 overall

Signing Time: 9AM

LOI in? Yes

Notes:
A complete animal off the edge that could eventually grow into a tackle. Though highly rated, he is still underrated. Completely blew up OT after OT at the AA game.  Pete Carroll called him the best 3 technique tackle in the country.

Lonnie Pryor

Position: Running Back

Measurables: 6-0/195/4.50

Videos: [1]

Rankings:
- Rivals: #15 RB, #143 overall (4*)
- Scout: #19 RB
- ESPN: #30 RB

Signing Time: 9AM

LOI in? Yes

Notes:
A lifetime Nole fan, Pryor racked up 2,295 yards as a senior.  Can play DB as well.

Dustin Hopkins

Position: Kicker

Measurables: 6-1/175

Videos: N/A

Rankings:
- Rivals: #1 K (3*)
- Scout: #1 K
- ESPN: #1 K

Signing Time: 9:30AM

LOI in? Yes

Notes:
With Lou Groza award winner Graham Gano graduating, the Seminole coaches hit a home run by securing the commitment of the top rated kicker in the country. Expected to assume place-kicking duties from day 1.

Jacobbi McDaniel

Position: Defensive Tackle

Measurables: 6-1/280/4.70

Videos: [1] [2] [3]

Rankings:
- Rivals: #2 DT, #15 overall (5*)
- Scout: #1 DT (5*)
- ESPN: #1 DT, #5 overall

Signing Time: 10:00AM

LOI in? Yes

Notes:
The cornerstone of the Seminole class.  Some Warren Sapp comparisons floating out there.  Committed early and never wavered.

Rodney Smith

Position: Wide Receiver

Measurables: 6-4.5/201/4.53

Videos: [1] [2]

Rankings:
- Rivals: #8 WR, #65 overall  (4*)
- Scout: #35 WR
- ESPN: #20 WR

Signing Time: 10AM

LOI in? Yes

Notes:
A shiftier Greg Carr that can simply make plays.  When he gets going, he is pretty fast.

Chris Thompson

Position: Running Back

Measurables: 5-7.5/178/4.59

Videos: [1]

Rankings:
- Rivals: #2 all-purpose back, #105 overall (4*)
- Scout: #36 RB
- ESPN: #35 RB

Signing Time: 10AM

LOI in? Yes

Notes:
A home run threat everytime he touches the ball. Projected to fill Preston Parker's current role.  Shifty.

Jajuan Harley

Position: Defensive Back

Measurables: 6-0/193/4.37

Videos: N/A

Rankings:
- Rivals: #12 S (4*)
- Scout: #10 S
- ESPN: #106 S

Signing Time: 10AM

LOI in? Yes

Notes:
Fast. Really, really, fast.  He has the fastest 100 meter time in North Florida.  Shut down DJ Johnson and Fred Pickett at Seminole Showtime.  Rangy.  I expect him to play FS.

C.J. Mizell

Position: Linebacker

Measurables: 6-2/212/4.51

Videos: [1-11]

Rankings:
- Rivals: #19 ILB (4*)
- Scout: #5 SLB
- ESPN: #25 OLB

Signing Time: 10:30AM

LOI in? Yes

Notes:
Extremely underrated linebacker. Had some off-the-field issues as a junior and was penalized by most services for it. If he can keep his head on straight at the college level, expect big things from Mizell. Absolutely loves to hit.  Would have been the #1 recruit in Florida (or Georgia) if not for his off-the-field incident.

Willie Downs

Position: Athlete (WR, S)

Measurables: 6-2/185

Videos: [1]

Rankings:
- Rivals: #3 Ath, #34 overall (4*)
- Scout: #7 S
- ESPN: #14 Ath

Signing Time: 11:00AM

LOI in? Yes

Notes:
Versatile athlete that could end up playing on either side of the field for the Seminoles. Has academic issues, but he's had a plan to follow for almost a year now so hopefully he will make it.  He has the potential to be a first round pick at free safety.  An absolute ballhawk.

John Prior

Position: Offensive Tackle

Measurables: 6-6/280

Videos: N/A

Rankings:
- Rivals: #51 OT (3*)
- Scout: #57 OT
- ESPN: #64 OT

Signing Time: 11:00AM

LOI in? Yes

Notes:
Trickett wanted him. That's all you need to know.

Bryan Stork

Position: Tight End

Measurables: 6-4/245/5.00

Videos: [1]

Rankings:
- Rivals: #26 TE (3*)
- Scout: #33 TE
- ESPN: #45 TE

Signing Time: 1:00PM

LOI in? Yes

Notes:
A greyshirt commitment, he will not enroll in classes until January. Technically, he is a member of the 2010 class. Projected to eventually end up on the line.

Justin Bright

Position: Safety

Measurables: 6-2.5/185

Videos: N/A

Rankings:
- Rivals: #39 S (3*)
- Scout: #95 S
- ESPN: #l41 S

Signing Time: 2:30PM

LOI in? Yes

Notes:
Hails from high school powerhouse Byrnes. Has a high football IQ and is very coachable.  Mickey's personal recruit.  Justin, if you read this, please bring Brandon Willis and crew to Tallahassee.

Henry Orelus

Position: Offensive Center

Measurables: 6-5/265

Videos: [1]

Rankings:
- Rivals: #7 C (3*)
- Scout: #30 OG
- ESPN: #l0 C

Signing Time: Who Knows.

LOI in? Yes

Notes:
Has started flirting with West Virginia as signing day approaches. Projected to stick with FSU to learn from the best in the business: Trickett.  Could play guard but will probably play center.  From the Muck.

Brandon Jenkins

Position: Defensive End

Measurables: 6-3.5/235

Videos: [1]

Rankings:
- Rivals: #13 WDE (4*)
- Scout: #25 DE
- ESPN: #18 DE

Signing Time: None (Already Enrolled)

LOI in? Yes

Notes:
An early enrollee that is already at FSU taking classes. Huge upside as soon as he gets some more upper body strength.  Great kid with a great family who will represent FSU well.

Still in Play

9 AM:  Andre Debose.  Wideout.  5* Signed with Florida.

10 AM:  Gary Brown.  5* DT from Quincy, FL.

Big man decided to go be irrelevant in Gainesville instead of making it to the NFL under O'dell. This one hurts because a lot of reports indicated that he wanted to come here but momma wouldn't have it.

Noon:  Jawanza Starling, 4* DB.

Very good talent, I don't think we have a shot.

Undetermined times:

Jumbo Athlete Dan Hicks (expected only as a greyshirt/ invited walk on).  We will sign Hicks.

Next week:  Orson Charles (not done with visits)

Your Job

When you head that a kid has signed his letter, post it in the comment section.  I don't care where you heard it, so don't say "such and such reports that".  Just say "it's signed".  We'll get a confirmation, and then update the chart.

Final Thought

Good luck today.  I'll be very busy tomorrow, with 3 classes and rehab for the shoulder surgery.  Whatever happens, remember to conduct yourselves with composure and class.   We might get a big surprise.  We might lose Henry Orelus to WVU (personally, I hope he does go to WVU because we picked up Phillips).  What matters is that we have done more in the last 24 hours than most schools will do today. I think we could realistically take up to three more prospects at this point, though it is very likely we don't take any new commitments.  If I had said I was satisfied with this class on Sunday night, I would have been lying to you.  If we don't take another player today, and lose nobody or Orelus, I'll honestly be able to call this class a massive success.  This is one of the best recruiting jobs I've ever seen.  It's all about production relative to resources.  This staff produced despite being handcuffed by the ACC's reputation, the success of our major in-state rivals, pending coaching changes, and looming NCAA sanctions.

NOTE:  There is no cursing in the comment section.  If you get out of hand, we will ban you.  The ultimate goal is to let people view this from work.  If we need to give someone a suspension for being inappropriate in the comment section, we will.  Tomahawk Nation doesn't tolerate those antics.

#5!

We have moved into the #5 spot in the rivals recruiting rankings, thanks to a 3-star, 4-star and 5-star committing yesterday.

Nice to see us up from like 13, which was where we were even after the Secord commitment.

If we get anyone else you’ve gotta think we stay in the top 5.

We're 10 points above USC

Who may be losing a 5-star today.

Well this isn't how we wanted to start off signing day

but someone has to tell you all. Charles Orson has officially eliminated FSU.

Dang

Just don’t go to UF.

Who would that be?

Is it just me or does the Reid commitment last night help make today feel like Christmas!?

I need to see an LOI from McDaniel, Haulstead, Reid, Pryor and McAllister and I’m going to go chug a Guinness at lunch.

by Nattylite on Feb 4, 2009 8:27 AM EST up reply actions

Reid was the must-get.

It’s Christmas. Charles was my second a week or two ago, but that’s changed with the recent optimism regarding you-know-who and maybe someone-I-don’t-know-who/these-guys-messing-with-my-head-now-that-I’m-not-as-in-touch-as-I-used-to-be. I see other posts popping up about Charles – scholly limits, having to know now, etc., re: Charles makes sense.

If we get Gary Brown

Get out the defilulator!

Anyone who doesn't "get" NSD...

LOL!!!

Exactly what I am doing right now my friend. I worked my ass off yesterday just so I’d be super caught up for today. My only annoyance is the phone on occassion…

64, do you know why Charles eliminated us??

Thought we’d be a finalist given his close relationship with Coley.

by FtLauderdaleNole on Feb 4, 2009 7:38 AM EST reply actions

Scholly Limits

I think it has to do with the coaches telling him to make a choice today or he doesnt have a scholarship. If we dont sign one of Debose or Brown maybe you see this scholarship go to Hicks?

by kyled on Feb 4, 2009 7:41 AM EST up reply actions

If Hicks gets a scholarship offer for the fall I will be disappointed.

Having him wait a year will be best for all parties involved.

It’s more likely that if we miss on everybody else Orelus keeps his offer and chooses us over WVU.

by MattDNole on Feb 4, 2009 7:53 AM EST up reply actions

Did not get into details

just said that FSU has been eliminated,

by Seminole64 on Feb 4, 2009 8:02 AM EST up reply actions

Debose is a Gator

Both Rivals and Scout are saying he’s faxed in his LOI to UF

by kyled on Feb 4, 2009 8:03 AM EST reply actions

Funny how every year the Gators get all 28 of their LOI's faxed in immediately.

And even though Gatorbait can’t update anything else, they can get their commitment/LOI page together before 8am.

by MattDNole on Feb 4, 2009 8:34 AM EST up reply actions

I'll keep an eye on Seminoles.com for their updates as well.

Remember, they may be a lot slower, but we know if a name is on their list then that player is ours.

Remember, the athletic department doesn’t discuss or highlight prospects we won’t sign.

by MattDNole on Feb 4, 2009 8:39 AM EST reply actions

Any chance we get another uncomitted recruit today??

I dont see us landing Starling or Brown but some popele are saying is a definite possibility

by ChileanNole on Feb 4, 2009 9:03 AM EST reply actions

I think we get 2 more today.

Depending on how today goes we may get 1 more tomorrow.

by MattDNole on Feb 4, 2009 9:05 AM EST up reply actions

I know we are getting Hicks tomorrrow

BUt 2 more today? Who…. Thomas You think we can get Brown??

by ChileanNole on Feb 4, 2009 9:07 AM EST up reply actions

You ever have a gut feeling...

Not like “I’m 95% certain this will happen.”

More like, if it were to happen you would look back in hindsight and say “I knew it” but that doesn’t mean you’ve entirely convinced yourself.

I may have overriden your changes. Sorry.

Dude if I won the lottery I would totally use all my money to buy tickets in a bigger lottery somewhere else.

Then when I win that one, I could use that money to buy Powerball tickets.

Once I win the Powerball, I can invest it all in a company that promotes lotteries and keep buying tickets so that my stock value increase.

It’s foolproof.

Recruiting and Super Bowl

We should have been calling after the super bowl (probably were), “Hey player X, did you see how many FSU players played in this superbowl, and how few UF players were there”

I’m not sure, but as far as active players, I believe FSU had the most.

There is still some dislike for FSU by supporters of FAMU in the area (a racial divide i guess). It’s ridiculous, and I wish it weren’t there. I personally try to support any of the local schools. I don’t know if this is the case, but it wouldn’t surprised if this was part of the reason his was pushed to go to UF. Otherwise, why would you push your kid further away?

Aubrey has potential to be Forrest Connolly/Tra Thomas size. Trickett won’t let him get that big, but if he were to buck his training plan and eat lots of PROTEIN! HGH! POWER BARS! (See “My New Haircut” on youtube for reference) and snickers and french fries, etc then he could be a monster.

That is one perspective.

But ask yourself, after being hung out to dry and treated like you’re insignificant by Coach Manboobs on several occassions, would you really want to be on a team, playing on his side of the ball, and listen to him?

Thomas felt slighted, and so he should have. If the other coaches would have over-ruled or simply ignored Chuck, Thomas would have signed. Thomas was in Chuck’s recruiting area so its not like there were other options – for example coaches like Dawsey or Coley who would have kept their word to visit him…

by fsu-dunn on Feb 4, 2009 12:12 PM EST up reply actions

We kind of agreed that we can't really hide Jacobbi's commitment

So it’s probably not because we’re trying to entice somebody with our depth chart. Just haven’t been able to figure out what’s going on.

by Seminole64 on Feb 4, 2009 12:15 PM EST reply actions

It was pretty well known

he wanted out of Tally. At least he will play, unlike TJ.

and no Thomas to replace him.

I won’t let this go. If I was allowed to be an editor on this site I would keep a Phillip Thomas column going. Maybe I will create a few accounts to rec my own posts and keep them as featured fanposts. We will have up to the minute updates on the status of him. We can link it to firechuckamato.com too.

warchant listing Rhodes as a WR/DB now

i guess the writing is on the wall. he moves to DB we’ve really filled our needs.

i still think he ends up WR, though. part of his things is that he idolized Dwayne Bowe, who went to Norland and then played for Jimbo.

by fsu-dunn on Feb 4, 2009 12:16 PM EST reply actions

Offensive Line

Wow, Trickett built that thing up quick. We have stockpiled a lot of really good players in just two years.

by fsu-dunn on Feb 4, 2009 12:17 PM EST reply actions

So what are people's thoughts on where our class ends up ranking?

by CelticPride on Feb 4, 2009 12:22 PM EST reply actions

Did we do this well landing all of our commitments last year?

Did we lose any big players on NSD? I’d like to see something unexpected today, but I can’t complain…our excitement came last night i suppose.

by jasonole59 on Feb 4, 2009 12:22 PM EST reply actions

We held on to everyone.

Except maybe Stinson, but he decommitted weeks ago.

by pbysh on Feb 4, 2009 12:24 PM EST reply actions

Didn't Stinson just say FSU back in the summer...

to get the media off his back? He never seemed to be a real commitment.

by coonhound on Feb 4, 2009 12:28 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, he never really felt like a commit. Didn't he commit without even stepping foot on campus?

That’s why I said “maybe” – From day 1 I didn’t think the kid was a Nole

by pbysh on Feb 4, 2009 12:33 PM EST up reply actions

Yes

It happens often. Some may need to up their GPA or SAT scores before FSU will let them enroll. If they don’t, then they got to prep school or juco for 2 years.

We have several last year in this situation: British Footman, Travis ARnold, Debrale Smiley, Amp McCloud.

by fsu-dunn on Feb 4, 2009 12:33 PM EST up reply actions

For icing on the cake,

could Spetman announce a 5 year extension on Trickett? That would be swell.

by fsu-dunn on Feb 4, 2009 12:28 PM EST reply actions

Best player all around or most vital to our team?

Best player is Demonte I think. Greg Reid could REALLY fill a void.

by NOLEinTX on Feb 4, 2009 12:45 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not going to issue 500 best qualifications/stipulations like a warchanter...

but when i look at the 2006 class, for instance, I see lots of busts and way down on the list there are Dekoda Watson and Christian Ponder.

Wow… looking at that list is so disappointing. Warren, Rose, McDaniel, Ball

by Legal_Seminole on Feb 4, 2009 12:49 PM EST up reply actions

"his character is sketchy" No its not...

The coach who cornered a high school kid to provoke a reaction is sketchy.

I think its funny he got his butt kicked. You don’t throw the N word out if you’re not prepared to take a thrashing.

Fisher: “Um… Chuck? What are you doing?”

Clown: “But…”
Fisher: “Yeah, we’re gonna need you to move your desk down to the B Level.”
Clown: “But that’s the basement.”
Fisher: “I know.”
Clown: “Is that my stapler?”

stick him in the basement room

where the academic advisors for sports management work. He can stick to online poker, or maybe go listen to the theory and practice of football class that happens two doors down.

more of the same. No big play TE’s, good blockers and average pass catchers.

One of the best classes in a long time.

Either Gary Brown or Debose could have sent this class through the stratosphere. Orson Charles would help. Watching the gates lose a few is almost as good as signing them yourself.

Now back to my regularly scheduled program of hammering Herban.

Just looked up who recruited Brown...

Chuck Heater…the saftey coach at UF. He hit on a few really good players and missed on Starling and an OT that went to USC.

UF obviously trusted him with a lot.
