Toney Douglas Named Player of the Week
Let's hope this isn't their way of letting Toney down easy before giving the ACC Player of the Year to someone from the Carolina schools.
Update: And they did let him down easy...Ty Lawson ACC Player of the Year. Toney ran away with the Defensive Player of the Year Award. Solomon Alabi received 3 votes. Leonard Hamilton was named ACC Coach of the Year, running away with that vote as well. Congrats Toney and Leonard! Take a look in the comments section for a break down of the stats.
Congrats, Toney!

Well, TD was a close second.
27 votes to Lawson’s 31, but that’s with the UNC vote split with 13 votes going to Hansborough. I’d say there’s a little bit of bias on the ACSMA, wouldn’t you?
Wow...they released the player of the week and then not even an hour later they release the POY...
Congrats to TY Lawson but:
Toney Played 1122 minutes to Ty’s 883
Toney had the ball on 27% of possible possessions to Ty’s 22
Toney scored 20.8 ppg to Ty’s 15.9
They say that Ty shot 46% from three…he only took 90 shots, compared to Toney shooting a nice 37% while taking 195. Toney made 73 3-pointers almost as many as Ty took.
Sure…Ty had an eFG% of 61 to Toney’s 50….but Toney took almost 200 more shots than Ty. FSU completely relied on Toney. UNC had plenty of other scorers.
Toney had 126 rebounds to Ty’s 83, which is 2.8 vs 4.1 rpg. Not much…but these are two guards.
Ty definitely led the way with assists with 6.5 per game compared to Toney’s 3.
They each had about 2 steals per game
Toney had 15 blocks to his 4.
Ty had few turnovers 59 to Toney’s 74…but that equates to a difference of 2.0 to 2.4 tpg. Toney’s TO% was actually less.
Here is a side by side of their stats.
So why does Ty get it…because he had more assists and less turnovers. Seriously…I would love to see the geographic break down of the ACSMA…
Lawson is an outstanding college basketball player…but is he really the ACC Player of the Year….
I would love to say that Toney dominated Ty in the UNC game…but Ty went for 21 points, 8-9 from the FT line, had 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 turnovers and 0 steals.
Butwhat did Toney do in that game:
32 point, 13-14 from the FT line. 2-3 from 3 point land. 2 rebounds. 1 assist. 2 steals and 4 turnovers.
I don’t get it. Congrats Ty…but I’m declaring shenanigans.
In other news:
Toney Douglas is the ACC Defensive Player of the year.
Leonard Hamilton is the ACC Coach of the Year.
Landesberg of Virginia received ACC Freshman of the year.
Was I clairvoyant or what?
This is an outright travesty. The ACSMA was well aware of TD’s body of work, which is why they gave FSU the consolation prizes of coach of the year, defensive player of the year, and player of the week. This is like saying “hey, we know we’re screwing you, you know we’re screwing you, but we’ll give you some parting gifts, so make sure you keep your mouth shut and don’t make too much of a scene as you exit stage left.”
Wow, congrats to the coach and definite defensive player of the year...
but Toney got screwed. I don’t understand how Hansborough got so many votes and I just don’t get Ty Lawson anointed the best of the ACC. No way, no how. Just bc the Heels are the best team, doesn’t mean we have to find a POY in Carolina Blue.
Hopefully we can meet UNC again this year and Toney can take it out on Ty & the Heels.
Congrats to Coach Ham and TD
I also feel like Lawson winning this shows some level of analysis by the voters. He was a better player than Hansborough this year.

Disappointing to be sure.
If we had better ways (statistics) to measure individual defensive performance, Toney wins this thing walking away.
The defensive player of the year led the conference in scoring in conference games and didn’t win??
If we left Toney in to shoot all the time against the poor competition, he’d be the leader in the “ppg overall” stat people cite, which is ridiculous because it is the conference numbers that should matter seeing that this is the ACC PotY award.
If you look at conference points per game the discrepancy gets even larger
Toney: 23 ppg
Ty: 16.2 ppg
Leonard Hamilton is the ACC Coach of the Year.
Who saw that coming at the beginning of the year?
I repeat:
Leonard Hamilton is the ACC Coach of the Year.
The ACSMA can stuff their sorries in a sack!
DPOY is worthless. Of course they aren’t going to give the POY award to someone from the university that just made headlines regarding scandals and sanctions. This was clearly thought out, and it stanks.
Why don't they just call this award what it really is:
the Best Player in the State of North Carolina Award (BPSNCA). That way the ACSMA can change their name to the All-Carolina Sports Media Association
Yeah Toney got screwed
But honestly, Coach of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year is a big step up for this team and program. What, a possible (or definite, I’m not sure) first round bye in the ACC tournament, the best player in the league, freshmen who are having an immediate impact, sending Echefu and Toney out in the NCAA tourney…
Yeah I would love to have Toney got POY as well, but definitely surpassed past performance and my expectations (though they may not mean much).
I see bias against FSU as well, but this week I’ll take it.
Welcome NoleRaised!
How’d you find us?
We do have the Bye in the ACC Tournament. You’re right, it’s been a tough week.
You live in Belle Glade, eh?
Will you give reports on prospects (DJ, ect.) this upcoming season? Thanks.

Found tomahawk through google... you guys are getting big
I work in Belle Glade, huge farming community. All those stories about guys chasing rabbits out of cane fields are true, but that only scratches the surface. Antone’s father works at the farm across the street from us.
Yeah I have some guys that I work with who know the Central program pretty well. I personally don’t know too much but I’ll see what I can do. The starting qb at Glades’ dad works with us. Smart kid but probably not a D1 prospect. Senior this upcoming year, stole the starting job from a much more talented kid because of his smarts.
I don't know about the rest of you...
But I’m sending emails to ESPN. I better be on Sportscenter or First Take tomorrow. Look for Daniel in Davie (although I do go to Florida State, I’m on Spring Break).
I'll try to be as polite as possible so I get on...
How’s this:
Toney Douglas led his no. 22 Noles to a first round bye in the ACC Tournament. He was voted Defensive player of the year, 2nd in the ACC in scoring, and first in steals. Was Toney Douglas snubbed for ACC Player of the Year?
Maybe add that we are going to the tourney for the first time since 1998.

One small correction...
Tyler Hansbrough is the scoring leader (ppg) for the entire season and Toney is second. The difference is 0.3 points per game (Tyler didn’t play as many games…26 to Toney’s 31…obviously can’t fault the man for his injury)
Toney Douglas is the scoring leader (points per game) during ACC play.
He also scored the most total points.

So that brings up the question...
If this award is for the POY in the ACC…how much do those OOC stats count for? I don’t know what the answer is…but if you look at ACC stats alone…Toney’s stats are far and away better than Ty Lawson’s.
You are correct that he is the second in scoring for the year…but just pointing out that subtle difference. I read it correctly the first time. No harm intended.
And I would love to see this discussed on First Take or any show…more press the better.
And that brings up another point...
We have no idea what the ACSMA uses to determine the POY…There is no committee that discusses it. It’s a membership. You pay annual dues to be part of this association. As far as I have found out, there are no guidelines to say…use ACC stats only etc…
So I guess our semantics illustrate our (FSU fan’s) frustration over Toney not getting this award…especially in light of the pretty clear statistical evidence.
In case anyone missed it...
FT didn’t even bring up the subject. I must have tried every way to get the chat about it. Sorry guys. =/
.bq obviously can’t fault the man for his injury
I disagree to a certain extent. If you are injured you are not helping your team so that should be a mark against you. I’m not saying he should be attacked for it but when you look at a MVP award I think it should be taken into account.
Trying again (Can we please petition for an edit button??):

The WWL had a commentator on earlier today
and he said we were a sleeper team in the tourney, like a UConn clone (paraphrasing since I dont remember.)
Didnt see a fan post about this, and was wondering if anyone else saw it.
