Is anybody hoping we lose the first game we play in the ACC tournament?
I promise I'm not crazy...mostly
After reading this article from SI is it hard to root for FSU this weekend?
While I believe it's possible and would be a great accomplishment for FSU to win the ACC tournament I don't realistically expect that to happen. In the same breath I'm not holding out for more than a win or two in the NCAA tournament.
Lemire makes a good point in that the preparation time allotted to a team that bows out early in its conference tournament is a sizeable advantage. Considering FSU is going to its first tournament appearance since Zach Morris was the only one with a cell phone the extra practice time could be very beneficial. After all we don't want to bow out as the victim of a first round upset.
While Lemire's article is really only focused on the top seeds he does note that mid-majors often have more time to prepare, which could lead to their early round upsets. So my question is, do we make a mockery of the ACC tournament and let loose the deadly duo of Hoff and Vanderwerff or do we go all out and let TD prove he's the real MVP on the league?

let's be honest here
our chances of winning the ACC tourney are minimal… and the NCAA even worse. Based on this I’ll take any win against anybody. We are still trying to build our program and winning any type of championship will help us do that. I think it is somewhat unrealistic to expect our team to win more than 2 games in the NCAA tourney (this depends on our bracket of course) but our chances would only improve if we were to get a better seed. That makes winning the ACC tourney worth it. If we won the ACC we could potentially land the 3 seed in Miami (with a potential matchup against a 6 seed in round 2) instead of maybe the 5 in Boise (where Lunardi currently has us) with a possible second round date with a 4 seed. Yes, we could beat a 4 seed, but I like our chances a whole lot better against a 6 (obviously this could change depending on the matchup, but overall we’d much rather play a 6 than a 4).
This strategy may be effective for a team like UNC who may not be playing for seeding anymore, but for us it doesn’t serve our bet interests.
For entertainment purposes only...
I actually looked up our odds to win the ACC tourney… 15/1, behind UNC (4/11), Duke (13/4), Wake (5/1), and Clemson (10/1)
This isn’t surprising and gives me another reason to hope Clemson loses today. I think it will be tough to beat them for the third time, even though we do match up very, very well.

I'm with you on this one.
I’ll take W’s regardless of which tournament it’s in.
Also, I don’t see how 2 extra days of “preparation” time is going to help the young Noles. FSU plays its first ACC tourney game on March 13th. The ACC Championship game is slated for March 15th. NCAA tourney play begins March 19th. Honestly I don’t see how 2 extra days of “preparation” time for the NCAA is going to help. They won’t even know who they’ll be playing during those 2 days.
My vote is for big game experience and ACC competition over those 2 extra days. The only downside I see is the potential for injury to TD.
so what is the goal
do we shoot for the sweet 16. no one will remember if we get to the top 36. We have to win at least the sweet 16 game. or we were just another school with one good year. I dont know b-ball at all but thats what it seams to me.
Why is the sky blue? Because, God Loves the Infantry
see my response to FSUn below...
but an NCAA berth is a step in the right direction regardless of our performance

i also found this quote a little misleading to say the least
“In 2006 Syracuse made a miracle run through the Big East tournament, winning four straight days at Madison Square Garden to lock down an NCAA berth. But five days later, with Orange star Gerry McNamara hobbled by a leg injury worsened in Big East play, Syracuse was upset in the first round; McNamara failed to score a field goal.”
If McNamara doesn’t play in the Big East tourney and “worsen” his injury, then Syracuse doesn’t make the NCAA tournament anyway.
I hope we get as much rest as possible.
I think we are somewhere between a 7 and a 4 seed, and I don’t see us improving that much.
Plus, less games means less chance for injury.
i agree on our seeding range
i think it would be tough to grab a 3 seed cause no matter how you look at it we aren’t one of the 12 best teams in the country… you could make the argument that if we won the ACC tourney we would be deserving but that would be a stretch… i think if we beat Clemson then we have a solid shot at a 4 with a chance to solidify that seed against Carolina… but no matter how you look at it, it would be very surprising to see this team roll off 3 wins in the NCAA… yes, we’re capable but we’d be underdogs to make it any further… that’s why i think we should take the wins any way to get them to try to make things easy
i think this team should set a goal for the elite 8 but a sweet 16 birth would not be disappointing at all… again this is all dependent on the matchups we get so we should try to make things as easy as possible

Hmm..
I don’t buy the “prep time” argument.
You can’t prepare for a specific team until you know who you’re going to play. And you don’t know who you’re going to play until Selection Sunday – after the conference championship game.
There’s something to the injury thing, but you can ge
I don’t want one and done in either tournament. If we lose a nail-biter to Clemson, it won’t be the end of the world. I definitely want at least a first round victory in the Big Dance. Preferably, the win over VaTech was the start of a ten-game winning streak :)
Celtic is on the tight track
What good are extra days to prepare when you don’t yet know who you are preparing for? Depending on the opponent, the preparation can be drastically different.
Plus, these guys are in terriffic shape (or at least most of them) – they can play a lot of games, and beating some top ACC competition would give them confidence heading into the NCAAs. Guys can get injured in practice just as easily as in a game.
You play to win the game.
Why work on offensive sets when we only have one?
which is GIVE TONEY THE DAMN BALL!!!
If we need a 3 at the buzzer to tie agianst Carolina?
Then possibly… otherwise absolutely not. In fact, he should just sit on our defensive end the whole game to avoid disrupting our offense but still helping by preventing transition buckets

Well its a close game so far between GT and Clemson. Tied at half.
With that being said, we better not lose to GT if we play them tomorrow.
Agreed!
GaTech just went up 5 to start the second half. It would be an easier matchup for us, but one we can’t afford to lose.
One point I didn't make before
(It somehow got lost IEBKAC)
A lot of times, teams that are not sure things for the dance expend a lot of energy/willpower to win their conference tournament b/c it’s their only sure ticket to the dance. (Clev. St the other night is an example of this). Frequently they’re playing against teams that already are shoo-in’s for the tourney so they aren’t playing with the same urgency.
After expending that much energy and emotion, there’s an incredible feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment (deservedly so). It’s human nature to let up a little bit after you’ve accomplished a major goal, so frequently these teams are early exits in the big dance. (I recall MD winning the ACC tourney several years ago and crashing out in the first round as an example).
OTOH, losing in your conference tourney sometimes puts a little chip on your shoulder and makes you a little hungrier.
All that being said, I agree with nolesblogger – we’re trying to build our profile as a major force in college basketball. Success in either the big dance or the ACC tournament will be a good thing.
I’m not expecting a championship, (although I wouldn’t be too surprised to see us in the Elite Eight), but I don’t want a first round flame out.
nobody wants a 1st round flame out...
but i think it is important to recognize that just making the NCAA tourney is a step in the right direction… i just hope the fan base doesn’t disregard this season as a whole if we don’t do as well as we all hope… i don’t want to become complacent with just making the tourney though and it is good that we are hoping for some tourney success… the bigger issue will be building on the success of this year’s team

And I think we've got the team to do it
At the start of the year, my only hope for this year was making the dance – mostly to give our innumerable freshman the experience.
Now that the season has played out the way it has, with Alabi emerging and TD putting on his cape, I want a little bit more :)
The season has already met my hopes. This program is set up well for next year and the future.
Now, I just want to watch our team play with hunger and intensity.
Game Over
