Say hello to the ACSMA...

Since joining the Atlantic Coast Conference circa 1991, no FSU men's basketball player has ever won the prestigious Player of the Year award. That's right, in roughly 18 years, FSU has never had the honor of having the (arbitrary) best player in the conference. Not Bob Sura, not Sam Cassell, not Tim Pickett or Al Thornton. No, not even a name like Charlie Ward could pull this honor.

Enter Toney Douglas. The man, the legend, the purveyor of all things roundball, the protector of Italian virginity (ok, so he's not Heath Ledger in A Knight's Tale). The senior carried a young FSU team through a brutal ACC schedule posting a 10-6 record this year. Along the way, he led the team in scoring and has been praised by some as being the best defensive player in the country. On the offensive side, Douglas made clutch shot after clutch shot in crucial conference games. He's second in the ACC in overall scoring. All this, en route to FSU's first NCAA tournament berth since the '90's.

Now meet the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association (ACSMA). A relatively anonymous group of sports writers. These no-namers select certain conference awards such as the POY. Who is this group of knowledgeable basketball eggheads, you ask? I have no idea. A Google search reveals no website for this mythical association. A search of the ACC's website only provides mere mention of the group. Who are these people? and why are they "qualified" to select the POY? Would anyone care to enlighten me?

What I DO know is that since the 1990-1991 basketball season, 16 years the award has been given to a player on a team from North Carolina. What I DO know is that only Maryland's Joe Smith and Juan Dixon and BC's Jared Dudley have won it from teams not from "Tobacco Road." What I DO know is that if TD doesn't win POY this year, the ACSMA will be glad their little association is anonymous.
